1. More Present 2. Interact with People More 3. Grow Faster 4. More Productive 5. More Transparent (Accurate Impression of You) 6. You Lack Worrying 7. Healthy Boundaries
Don't "lock it away". Get rid of it (sell, give etc.). Otherwise you'll likely find a reason to unlock it away. We humans have no self control! Also, I went smartphoneless about 15 month ago and I cannot recommend more.
Been long time "phone addict". Today It Finally stopped. Bought Nokia phone, sold my samsung and actually noticed that many people are just focused on their "smart" phones all the time, every where. That is actually scary.
@@Blackwhite2277 i know you asked Julians, but I bought nokia 3310 (2017 version). It has pros and cons but works fine. It is a bit expencive for a "dumb phone" but yeah
Agreed, Juians that's it's scary. It's bothered me for the last 3 years. Even scarier is that few people seem to care about how others behave with their phones.
I've never had a smart phone. 🤣 I just like having a phone that's a phone. I've always felt that way and don't feel any temptation to get a smart phone. For reference, I'm 28 yo.
@@Cam-pt9ex I have just Googled nano Sim card. 😂 I believe my phone is micro Sim card size. Honestly, I cut down my standard size Sim card to use in this phone, and that's worked fine for the last several years. In any case you can either try to align the nano in the slot til it sits in a spot that works, or you could get a nano to micro Sim adapter. It's like a little plastic housing in the shape of micro that holds nano. That's my recommendation if you really want this phone and wanna use nano Sim. But to answer your question, it looks like the slots are micro, not nano.
Love this. I’m 17 and have been thinking of going to a flip phone for a while. I just need to tell my mom; I don’t think she’ll believe me 😂 But I’m definitely going to. Will save me money on overpriced data payments and will be better for my mental health.
So how are u doing so far without the phone. I'm 21 and i desided that I should stop doing social media and u tube for a bit. So I desided that I would live in the early 2000s even going as far as to replace my modern tv with crt tv for a week had a bet with my Sis that I could survive.....i didn't last 3 days I have popcorn brain in which we are so accustomed to iPhones and social media it literally changed your brain where u need something to stare at constantly. It was a shock to me because I was fine before I got my first iPhone at 13 years old now I can't go 3 days without 1. Crazy
Awesome video! I just "downgraded from a Samsung Galaxy S20 to a Kyocera flip phone yesterday. I got the DuraXV Extreme, just so I can throw it across the room and not worry about breaking anything (well, at least anything on the phone). I've checked it a few times in the last 24 hours and laughed at how I am slowly getting rid of that old "digital dopamine" fix. Thanks for this video. I think the future is flip phones.
Its makes me wonder like WHEN are we going to stop. Like are we done being ultra consumers yet? Like I'm sooo bored with most content I see now a days anyways.. Like for example I'm so bored on RU-vid now because due to the algorithm suggesting things based on what I already watch I feel like I NEVER see anything new. I'm suggested the same content from the same creators ALL THE TIME. It gets boring af
They have gone up. When I was young the mad a flip phone cost was 100. Now it's 80-300. Still kinda of insane. But they last longer than a smartphone. 3G phones end this year but 20 years they could last since you can buy a new battery
You're absolutely spot on. I recently moved to a very rural area and my house had no internet service and no usable cell signal for the first six months. I got more done and was more relaxed in that six months than I've ever been. I recently got starlink internet service and now I'm constantly reaching for my phone and get nothing done. Put down your phone and get your life back.....
@@ColinCasperLMHCas someone who listen to music a lot, I don't mind using keypad phones as long as I can connect my earbuds. I just recently bought a Nokia 110 4g 2023 as a replacement for my old Nokia 130(2017) , a great 2g phone with Bluetooth a2dp 3.0, great Bluetooth connection, not so great battery life (1020 mah) due to the Bluetooth 3.0 , an outdated protocol which uses battery a lot when earbuds are connected to it. With the Nokia 110 4g 2023, there are newer shenanigans like Bluetooth 5.0 so I don't have to carry my hefty smartphone outdoor for music streaming purpose, a bigger 1450 mah battery, a LTE network and a browser, it's a bit usable but for the price, I'm getting what I'm looking for. So far so good, I'm liking it especially this weird shaped t9 keypad which reminds me of these mid 2000s feature phones
I'm a therapist like you and I've never had a smart phone -- on purpose. I don't text either. Loved the video! My boyfriend send it to me knowing I would love it.
I am 37 so I have watched all this unfold and evolve. I have never been worried about having a certain phone. I have always used budget service providers where possible then that turned into me just using WiFi instead of activating a data plan. This summer I broke a nice smart phone I bought from a friend and that was in July. I never replaced the phone. I don't even use a phone at all now. I just use a tablet or laptop when home. I don't habe a big social life anymore so its easier. I see the problem on a big picture scale. Seeing the results of this phenomenon makes me think that it's something being done intentionally by people who want control. Its hard for me to believe that us being divided via overconnectivity while exposing our thoughts and locations constantly is purely a result of a natural phenomenon.
My flip phone is on the way in the post and I'm so excited to discover who I am again. I am also so glad that my armpits smelling of boiled eggs is normal and not a rare disease:D
That is really exciting! I think one of the biggest downfalls to letting a phone be our go-to boredom extinguisher is that we miss out on a lot of self exploration.
Love it. Thank you Colin. Love the name of the channel by the way 😉 I recently turned 18 and ive grown up with technology and smart phones. Its become a norm and a way of life, but im not sure that I like that way of life! I need to get out of it. Its encouraging to see others have decided to do the same and to see their enthusiasm about it. I recently ordered a flip phone and im so excited to make the switch. I want to experience life and be the best man that I can be. God bless you and your family.
I have no social media and even RU-vid app is deleted from my 6 years old smartphone. I use my phone for google to lookup a recipe before cooking or to something and that’s all.
Soo much interesting and exciting content ..!! I Hope everyone sees this video and get to change their life better ..!! Thanks alot brother Iam from India , You got my respect
The sharing of stories reminds me of a time I was waiting for a rental car. It was during the height of the pandemic, and as a precaution we were outside, social distancing and wearing masks and everything. There were four or five of us, and we had to wait for about two hours. Honestly, we wished it would have taken longer. The conversations we had were fascinating. Turns out one guy was managing the finances for this sweet little old lady who had recently passed away--and another guy was helping her out around the house, doing the mowing and caring for her hedges and the like. Both were vets, one a Marine during the Afghanistan war and the other from the first Iraq war if I recall right. We discussed lawn care, dogs, this lady's life (which was fascinating in its own right), various types of financial assets (it was more interesting than it sounds), cars, war stories--that sort of good, rambling discussion that you'd have sitting around the fire with good friends.
Yes sounds All terrific but im from New York City/ any chance there that: these Two Military guys pruning roses & paying the expenses On Behalf of this sweet elderly Socialite Lady: were a Romantic "team" of tinder swindlers... Wonder How Well these fellas are Living now... The whole thing sound Like a nervous confession: Were those guys waiting for One Car or two... & who inherited The House...
Just ordered a flip phone and am super exited for it! Already deleted my social media apps on my smartphone and this is gonna be a step further. Plan on using the flip phone for at least two weeks and hopefully even more😃 ( I am 30 btw and used to have one of these anyway so going back to the roots here ;) )
I started with smartphones years back because the flip phones of the day weren't loud enough be heard in a big truck. (Moving oil rigs, not highway hauling). The smartphones were always a challenge as they made it harder and harder to use a a communications device. It got to the point that it took longer to place the call than the call itself took. I am delighted to see flip phones returning, and look forward to the day when I get rid if the horrid "smartphones" forever.
I’ve changed to a flip phone for 2 months, and it’s amazing! Using a flip phone looks so cool and it helps me avoid all distractions, talk more with ppl around, communicate and make more lovely memories. what a wonderful way to make my life more meaningful 😊
I use a smartphone, I do sometimes get distracted but I think it’s a reasonable trade for a incredibly powerful tool. And I don’t just walk around on it, I don’t use social media, I keep it out of my hands unless I need to use it.
Watching, analyzing, re-watching and analyzing a movie called "My Dinner with Andre" changed my life. You could easily watch it, and only take away "Boomers hate technology" and keep living the way you did. For me, it came into my life at the correct time, and I'm happy to say that it has made me think about every action I take during the day. It doesn't make me get rid of all my comforts, rather, it makes me choose which comforts I could live without. I'm not on social media and I do not let algorithms decide what kind of content I want to watch. I am here watching this video, because I've decided to change to a flip phone after my old one dies out (7 year old phone by now, still works but is showing signs of aging). I only watch videos that I myself thought to watch, and those videos will end up meaning more to me. Not to say that I do not indulge in watching videos about things I don't care about (drama, essays about subjects I don't know about), but being aware of myself, and knowing what I want, makes the difference. That movie made me find out why it's important to think about what you'd like to be doing in 5 years. It's not about career growth, money, or accomplishments. It's about developing, and reflecting upon yourself. Life is what you make it. The constant comfort of smartphones, social media, and most of all, COMFORT, makes us forget to be ourselves. Great video. I wish everyone a great journey of learning to be human again.
I'm on the second week of having a flip phone and your video is great. completely on point. My daughter interacts more when I'm not sticking an iPhone in her face, taking photos every second of every day. It's been a great improvement. My friends are having a harder time adjusting than I am. But I'm happy to keep staying on this flip phone if that means I'll be a more present mom.
I'm with you. I call those dumb things, "smart-ass-phones." They are a huge time wasting load of crap. How may times when you go out you see scores of people glued to those bloody things. I feel so tempted sometimes to grab their smart-ass-phone and throw it in the trash and tell them to get a bloody life. I need a phone for one thing, and one thing only, and that's to make phone calls. Wow, how profound is that. Mahalo!!
And you must bee Islamic. Or moist with your stupid thoughts bloody sucker. Just wait till someone pops you in the face for taking your own sweet time pulling out your stupid dumb phone and being inconvenient to them. Nobody in their mind these days wants to wait on someone that doesn’t have a smart phone. You can’t legislate society these days cause you know that everyone pretty much has a smart phone you dimwit I would love to throw all those bloody stupid flip phones in the trash actually. They are nothing but a burden and make your life a living hell!!! Yea you just wait till yo hare standing in line and someone pops you cause you are taking to long with your stupid ass dumb phone. Bee smart not stupid!! Work smarter not bee a burden. You will remember these words when yo hare standing in line at the post office and the postal service guy gets pissed off with you cause you can’t scan the QR code. You have to demand a copy of your little code that you could have just done on your smart phone but knowing stupid idiots like you wanting to try and prove that you are so better than everyone else is not going to work jack ass!!!! Only a moron would do stuff like this cause society is smart. We are not going back. We are progressing in society not regressing. So why don’t you shove that dumb phone in your squeaky little ass and go back to your ommish country. And hide yourself for ever with your horse and buggy ommish boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I subscribed. I love your video. I agree with everything you said I have been using a flip phone for over a year and I love it. I bought a garmin gps and I’m happy and more productive. Went from an iPhone 7. I still have it cuz it takes great pictures and videos for you tube. Stay well 💜👍
100 % agree 👍, very addicted with smartphone, then you no longer smart. Thank you Bros, I have been thinking about this too long already. It's time to detox and fasting...
You're not alone! Feels Good to breath again. There are some cities around Europe and Asia that put ground Level traffic Lights (with LED) because pedestrians are constantly looking at their phones! That's how crazy it has become.
Great video! I have the Sonim Xp3 plus. I've hidden my Samsung S21. The flip has no maps, and I use KT9 predictive texting, but that's all it does and that's ok! 🙂
i’ve been wanting to make the switch for a while now, ive been so in my head about things & i also have adhd so having constant access to any information i want at my fingertips kind of exacerbated my constant thinking & it ended up just being an extension of my overloaded brain. this video gives me hope that its possible and that it doesnt have to be like that. thank you
Very cool stuff, and always nice to find people from the Bay Area here (I’m a St. Pete guy, but lived in Tampa and Clearwater). I’ve been working on unplugging for a while and haven’t made the jump back to an old T9 flip phone but I’ve taken all 3rd party apps, email, and notifications off my phone to make it as “non-smart” as possible. It really does help, and when I come home from work, the phone goes on my desk, the smart watch comes off, and my AirPods go in my pocket. It’s been really great for my mental health and for my family time.
I have a huge exam in a couple of days and it's going to end in August from March. My phone is reducing my productivity so much so I'm giving it to my mom to hold. If I locked it away, I could always take the key and open it back up.
@@ColinCasperLMHC hi Colin,so far it's been very positive 🙂 Because I'm not expecting anything from my basic phone ,I feel less need to even carry one. I now just use text and calls, when I first dropped off things like WhatsApp,it took folk a while to realise you were not on there anymore, but anyone who genuinely wants to keep in touch will do , it's a good way of also filtering so called fake friends . Having said all that , I wasn't on any social media, I had RU-vid on there which I didn't see as social media really , I was using that as a learning tool. , I miss that but can use my tablet to do that at home . I have no desire currently to go back to a smart phone,I find life more peaceful without one ,I'm not constantly distracted anymore,I feel more productive at work When I come home and I hear my wife's phone pinging off with notification after notification, I now see just how distracting and addictive it was , I challenged her to give it up for a week ,just so she too could see how peaceful life is without it , or at least log out of everything and turn off data and WiFi for a week..I know she will see a difference but folk seem worried about missing out on things , which normally only turn out to be rubbish anyway, so I will try and persuade her. Also ,like I said ,I have less desire to now carry a phone , I have carried one for most of the time since first having one and I thought to myself, how many times has anyone had to call me in an emergency or me use one in an emergency, the answer was zero! We become programmed to think something terrible will happen if I don't carry it. We managed before them and we used to farm all over back then So in a nutshell I'm more relaxed, less distracted,no longer addicted, less anxious (waiting for phone to do something) best thing I've done by far , will be continuing, .. Remember how brilliant sms was when first came out in 90s ?well it still is. Many thanks for the Vid to get me started 🙂
The only downside is that people nowadays expect everything to be done in a couple of minutes. Without a smartphone this isn’t the case, you’ll prob get late to your job cuz you don’t have uber or like he said u forget to reply to this work related thing. But that way you’ll experience way more things like u would use public transportation and interact with people more often and people will see you as a bit careless and maybe a bit jealous bc they aren’t in control of their own life as u.
I went back to a flip phone 15 months ago and will never go back. You don't realize how zombie-like we have become until you switch back and watch others on their smartphones. People will try to talk you out of it, but it is totally worth it to make the switch!
I can remember my days in 2007'ish. I had a computer and a Nokia cell phone. And I really didn't have any of the problems that I have today from smartphones. I guess when Computer and Phone became one, It changed everything. Now, you can become addicted to computers with the ability to carry that addiction everywhere with you. When you couldn't have it before because you couldn't sit on the computer for too long. I'm switching to normal phones again, I had enough with smartphones.
Had an iPhone 11 Pro until last week. Missus was on about upgrading so while browsing I realised I don’t need another smartphone. 1. I barely use social media, nothing other than Instagram and I’m not even posting and that 2. It’s big in my pocket, don’t like it 3. I only use it really to call, not big fan of texting so barely, maybe weather, calendar and that So instead of upgrading, I locked it away and bought 2 (yes, 2, one spare just in case 😄 ) of my favourite phones ever. MOTOROLA V3. Now I’m stress free, it’s weird now being in a group and everyone scrolling. You don’t see that when you have one. Not planning to go back to a smartphone anytime soon, especially with a kid on the way. PS: I’m writing this comment from my PC, in case you’re wondering 😄
Missed one thing self control. I grew up with bar and flip phones and transition to a smart phone and I don't do those things all the time. There's some things I could be better at at but I have fairly good self-control that usually I am talking to somebody rather than actually doing things I need to do. I didn't say I had a good procrastination.
Brilliant video 😅 I’ve deactivated my Facebook and I’m probably two weeks away from doing the switch to a flip phone. I’m actually looking forward to it :)
My flip phone with a busted hinge sits on my dresser powered off until I drive away from my house. Then I don't use it. I watched this video and I'm typing this comment across the room on a 40" screen. All of my old friends contact me through email when they need me now that I've been off of Facebook for most of the last three years. They know I will answer an email up to days faster than my phone, and usually within a few minutes...if I'm at home. This way makes sense to me.
So the last few days I've just treated my smartphone like an old landline phone. Meaning I leave the phone at home and only use it for phone calls and voicemail. I've adjusted pretty easy so far and don't really miss it. Maybe sometime next week or so I'll buy a flip phone but currently I'm not having a problem going back to living life like it's the 1990s again. However it's really odd and disturbing to see everyone around me staring at little rectangular objects in there hands all the time. Even while walking and occasionally while driving.
I've had a flip phone now for 1 year. I agree with all the benefits you mentioned. I also found I shop less now. One because I don't scroll and shop. Second, I don't have a ton of apps for rewards programs and incentives to order on their app for specials. I find now I buy something when I realize I need something. I'm a LCSW and work in mental health as well. Loved your video.
I'm 32. I watched the whole thing unfold (pun intended). My mom had a pager, then an old flip phone with nothing but a call log. My first cellphone had an mp3 player and that's it. I had the first android phone, the G1, a weird little brick with a sliding keyboard. The screens got bigger and bigger, the apps become addictive to a science. Concerts were filled with screens, people stopped making eye contact, attention spans shortened and nobody is happy. I'm breaking free too. I have a flip phone coming in the mail tomorrow.
I’ve managed to get through 76 years without being glued to a phone, and I’m still breathing! For many of those years I had no phone at all. I have a dumb phone which never leaves the house. I wouldn’t have that if the government hadn’t made it that all phone calls have to come through the computer - VOIP!
I looked up videos about this because I'm always telling my friends to make the switch. You've explained it really well ! Going on 2 1/2 years now :) Like is good and simple. Can't believe how I can actually remember directions when I go somewhere now... I'm not brainlessly following siri anymore
C.C. man youRe Better than Saturday Night Live & 3rd time you Brought up Fried egg Ladies wow Thank you New flip phone Happens to be On the way. Subscribed. Nice kitchen. YouRe The King of Culture !!
Doing this over this weekend. Will have just a house phone and then my "emergency phone" that I'll take with me when I am out and about. Basically, a car phone.
I suddenly thought about this question for is it worth it to have a smartphone but now after watching this video I can say that it is not important to have a smartphone we smartphones actually are very overrated and if these phones have much better hardware then they could be way better than a smartphone.
I just got a flip (feature) phone like I had back in the late 90s. People don't realize how psychologically damaging smartphones are (a fast easy instant access pc in your hand). Dopamine feed loops, doomscrolling, heavy misinformation/lies from news, division and self comparing with unrealistic caricatures or their lives on social media. Fast food to your door, p.rn, addicted to watching video's - so many negatives people will suffer from a smart phone. It's become part of our evolution because everything is purposefully being made digital. Not to mention all your life is stolen and send to Ggl's firebrand server (what you write, say, look up, share or where you go due to Wi-Fi scanning). I think these things will cause people depression, anxiety, anger, many bad habits and a large waste of people's life. Overstimulus and too much info is no good anyway, we won't take in all that information. These things are one of the worst inventions made, even though they also offered a bunch of conveniences. WebMD lol I knew what was coming, yes I've looked up a black dot on my foot and it said I have cancer and my foot is gonna fall off and all sorts.
It all comes down to a single question: "How important is texting to you?" Flip phones are way too slow to text. I don't text at all. I use the e-mail for that function. Since the credibility of all social media has been destroyed over the last few weeks, text is the only real advantage a "Smart Phone" has. I got by for decades with a phone with a cord just fine. A decade and a half with a "phone without a cord" (a flip phone for another fifteen years. Smart phones allow Big Tech to track you to within a six foot radius. Just the carrier service on a "Smart Phone" cost $50/month more. Am I am old fogey? If so I'm an old fogey that makes it difficult for Big Brother to track me and a fogey that is $600/yr richer.
The past couple years now, I though about going back to my flip phone. I have a Casio G'z One. Currently I have a Note 10+. NOW, I do have a Tablet. I can use that, let's say, Google Map. But I love my calendar app, Reminder app. And the camera on my Android is super. Gallery app. But, I do suppose some of these can, with some effort could be used on my flip phone as well. Oh the typing, texting, doctor's appointments, calendar appointments. Now I know it will be cheaper get a phone plan. I think, it would be cheaper, I think, a plan for my flip phone and tablet. At work, keep my flip phone on my person, and my tablet in my car, or in my backpack. And let's tell the truth guys, the boss on the job would appreciate undivided attention to work, as opposed to looking at your smartphone during business hours... Well after all this I wrote, I'm still at square one...
You the man that’s the best way too be u not out of touch u just smart human ppl with these smartphones are the ones out of touch with reality believe that’s its very true smartphones an social media’s platform it’s a deadly combination I don’t like either one that’s why I’m going back too my flip phone
Yes Yes Yes Everywhere you go, just look around at all the people that surround you in a restaurant or at the lunch table at work; they mostly don't pay any attention to each other because they're constantly on their phone.
No GPS? No problem. That helps your inner compass. If your parents had to navigate by planning their route via paper maps, we should be able to do that as well. Or, purchase a GPS navigator -- they're still better and accurate than a smart phone's app like Waze or Google Maps. And they use satellite feeds over a data plan. Not banking on my phone -- that's something I refuse to do. If I'm banking online, I'd rather do that in the privacy and comfort of my own home. I don't care how "convenient" it is to bank on my phone -- I don't feel safe or comfortable doing it on such a device. No data plan -- a basic cell phone is just calls and texts. Financially, you can imagine how much money you have saved, and the level of stress has dropped.
I have an original flip phone that I wish I could still use but the carriers no longer support them. I liked that big tech didn't know my location 24 hrs a day, which is probably one of the main reasons they no longer support them. If people wanted to communicate with me they would just have to get over their fear of the human voice and call me. As for maps they still make paper ones
I don’t carry a cell phone because it makes me feel like a tracked animal 🦒. I should carry a flip phone for emergencies or those just in case moments. Thanks for the great video. 👍🙏
I turn off all sounds and no vibration it helps and I keep the phone out of eye sight or in another room or in a bag when with others so I don’t see notifications I also shut the phone off every night before going to bed , I am looking into flip phones now and trying to see if one comes with a turn by turn gps
Cool. Tomorrow my wife and myself are switching to basic phones. Tired of smartphones. And, we do not need. We will make sure we can use it as a hotspot.
Loved this video...everything you said is spot on! I use the Alcatel Myflip (same one you are featuring) and I love it . Have never owner a smartphone and, frankly, never want to. And now that Alcatel has come out with the _Alcatel Smartflip_ (also known as the Alcatel Go Flip 3 on T-mobile) the last of the little inconveniences of traditional flips are a thing of the past, because this new flip _has_ speech-to-text, via Google Assistant and Google maps!
