I used to be in the tire business, car retreads are crap. For used car tires you can usually find several shops that sell them on the less affluent sides of towns. Sometimes some really good deals can be found. But if a used tire/tires have great looking tread be wary; there's usually a reason they are not still on a car. Thanx for all your info Scotty! 👍
@PumaPete

No used tires for me. Most of them have lots of tread but are as hard as hockey pucks. Like you said, there is a reason someone got rid of them.

Honda chemicals: years ago I worked in a motorcycle repair shop, and the big "controversy" of the day was how the water pumps on Gold Wings would fail prematurely. Also, people would complain about Honda's coolant being too expensive; they thought they were paying extra just for the brand name. Well, it turns out that the pump wear came from car coolant, which has silica added to wear away corrosion. The Honda system had tighter tolerances, and was designed to use coolant without silica. Unfortunately, back in those pre-internet days, information was not as easy to get, so it took quite a while before we figured it out. Personally, I never had problems like this because I never assumed I knew more than the engineers who designed the product. Retreaded tires: After that job I got a job for a manufacturer of tire retreading machinery. What you say about passenger tire retreads, sadly, jibes with what I learned at that company. While it used to be possible to retread a car tire several times, the market wasn't there; anyone who wanted the lowest price would not buy a tire strong enough to last, and anyone who could afford a robust tire wasn't concerned with the savings from retreading them. But if the very concept of retreading wasn't viable, long-haul truckers would not still be using it today. Nowadays, you can get a million miles off of one tire if it's treated properly. It kills me how many of your "tips" boil down to "just follow the instructions."
@upnorthviking823
@upnorthviking823 4 года назад
This is true for the coolant..what messes up the cooling system is the water people use..the minerals build up in there.. Mixing the coolants also.. The blue coolant is the stuff thats made for it..lasts 10years also! Only thing true about honda fluids...the rest is plain marketing i prooved it since almost 3decades...power steering fluid..atf..mtf any brand works without problems
@williamneuman7783
@williamneuman7783 4 года назад
@@j_freed Retreads used to be a thing in the 70's and 80's when Bias ply tires were the norm and radials were the new kid. Was always told you can't retread radials. Since most of my driving was local on an older car. I didn't mind retreads but when I had the money, always bought new.

right? Some newer cars it literally drops in like 5-15 seconds... but NO I CAN'T WAIT, pulls out of driveway and zooms down the street. Great advice! Oddly, up here in the Great White North (Canada), we use what the rest of the world knows as the ‘Metric System’. So we’ve been accustomed to Oil Changes every 5,000 kilometres. That’s a huge difference over 100,000 Miles. Which is equivalent to our 160,000 kilometres. In our case (hypothetically) our car’s engine has received 32 oil changes. In your case at a 100,000 miles American car (same mileage) has received only 20! Like I said... big difference! Thanks for another insightful video.

Scotty: Don't do the following.... Me: Hold my beer. Remember when using an extinguisher: Aim at the BASE of the flame, not the smoke or flames. Watch out opening the hood of a smoking car, it may flare up violently. Try to use the extinguisher through the wheel wells. If you can't afford the fancy extinguishers, you can get the cheaper one from about $15-30 U.S.D. I fought a car fire once, but needed a bigger extinguisher. At least I bough time for the fire department to arrive in that crowded parking lot, although the car was likely totaled due to cost of repairing the fire damage.

After I finally landed a good paying job I went and bought a 51 chevy truck like my father had when I was a kid, it was in great shape and I really loved that truck-until-I had just left a burger joint and saw some smoke coming up around the hood, stopped and found a small fire on the side of the eng. (wound up being a broken fuel line) took off my coat and then my shirt trying to put it out but it just got bigger. My truck burnt slap up before the fire dept. got there, sure wish I'd had a fire extinguisher that day.....

doing God's work there, a crowded parking lot can be a chain reaction of explosions after the first couple. The first car takes a while to go, the car beside it will go up much faster because it's been preheated and there's fuel underneath the car (from the burst gas tank).

Thanks Scotty, as usual, the best. I’ve managed to find an honest to goodness car mechanic like you, for my SLK. He’s Russian but knows his stuff, I wish all could find a good honest mechanic but in today’s world, every one is out to make a dollar, or Euro in my case living in Spain. The best part is, I am learning from him as he doesn’t mind me looking over the job, to learn, not interfere etc. Try and find a mechanic like this ? 🤔 keep up the great work Scotty, if you don’t have a PHD, you should be honoured with one from all of us novices 👍👏

Interestingly enough, since that car was made, Honda changed the recommendation for that Civic to 0W-20. (5W-20 is now considered an alternate oil for that generation of Honda vehicles.)
@mujaahid4life
@mujaahid4life 4 года назад
0w-xx oils can be used in place of 5w-xx oils generally in modern vehicles with EFI. The number before "w" is the cold viscosity: 0w will flow much faster at startup than 5w at 32F or below, easier for your engine to cope if you live somewhere where it gets chilly during the winter months. As long as the second viscosity number (thickness the oil will reach at operating temp) is the same, there should not be any harm in switching from 10w-xx or 5w-xx to 0w-xx..

Good information guys! I did not know that Honda had changed the recommendation on some of the older vehicle but I was doing that myself anyway. I agree a high-quality true chemical-based synthetic oil in a 0w 20 is a fine replacement for a 5w 20. I did this with my 07 pilot and I just acquired a very well-maintained 2003 Accord V6 VTEC and I plan to do the same using Amsoil signature series 0w 20.

The percentage is a timer/mileage reader. It doesn't actually measure the quality of your oil
@retiredsnowbunnyhunterx5106
@retiredsnowbunnyhunterx5106 4 года назад
@@wigletron2846 it really doesn't. I have counted 10k on mobile one. By the time i get to 1% i would put almost 7k on the oil. I wait to 20% then change it. No harm in doing it that way.
@wigletron2846
@wigletron2846 4 года назад
@@retiredsnowbunnyhunterx5106 have you ever read the manual? They always recommend really long oil change intervals. I'm not saying to go by that. All I'm saying is the life indicator is just a timer. It can't tell how good your oil is. It's why you have to reset it manually after a change

I've been watching your channel for about a year. You give really good advice. My 2000 Toyota tundra (bought 4 July 2000). I gave it to my grandson he was born 12 July 2000. I told him do the maintenance and it'll last another 20 years! 👍🏻👍🏻 Something with my 2003 Toyota 4 Runner. Still a very powerful engine running like new 167,000 miles. In the Philippines for my transportation I purchased a 2019 Toyota Innova (diesel). They'll have it till long after I meet my maker!👍🏻👍🏻 Do the maintenance! And follow your advice! And "common sense" advice!🤠
