How To Jump A HardTail Mountain Bike: The Ride Series MTB Skills Clinics Rich Drew

Jumping a hardtail mountain bike is very similar to jumping one with full suspension, you just don't have that advantage of that rear shock. This ‪@specializedbicycles‬ Fuse was a blast, I even had fun on those flat pedals! The Coler Bike Preserve here in Bentonville is such a rad spot and it was even cooler having my man Cip Micula to coach through this one. He's got a mean latte art game and now his jump game is getting stepped up!
Please consider supporting the Patreon platform. I REALLY dig making this content and the more support we can get, the more rad stuff we can do! Be sure to check out the "FULL SEND" level where you can submit a video for me to analyze and breakdown: / therichdrew
I'd also love to have you follow along on my daily adventures on Instagram. Keep your eyes peeled for random tips. If this platform hits 10K, I'll do a daily tip! therichdrew...
Keep your eyes peeled for a Ride Series Clinic near you OR decide take a trip to Bentonville, Sedona, or Dallas to attend: www.therideseriesmtb.com/
The jump basics still apply. Not having rear suspension certainly gives it a more direct feel, but you have to remember to keep your hips over the bottom bracket. It's also much less forgiving when you land, so be ready.

I've got to thank you Rich, discovered your channel about four weeks ago, purchased a hardtail for my girlfriend last summer after riding around in Whistler for a day. She loved biking and had never done it before, I know starting to ride at the age of 40 is random but she really does enjoy it. You break everything down so well that's over the last three weeks she has really progressed, so much in fact that she just goes out and hits trails all by herself now! Thanks for your videos and keep er up my man! Greatly appreciated! Only problem is I feel a new bike for her if she keeps riding like she is! :)

14.28 This is my issue. I tend to be forward and as soon as my front wheel comes off the lip it starts to go forward. I learned this racing BMX so I could go far and low (fasted way to jump) but now I am trying to go higher and I struggle to overcome this old habit! I am definitely getting better and on mellow jumps like this I have in nailed. It's the steeper lips where I struggle the most.

I have really enjoyed your videos. I have ridden for years and I am pretty comfortable on most jumps with shallow to medium lips. I watched the steep lip video and would say that looks like my limit. Any steeper and especially when more abrupt like a dirt jump park, and I seem to fall apart. I definitely suffer from some of the 7 bad habits sometimes. I feel like the more I try to pop, the more I just go up and not forward. I can go in with 25% more speed than “teenagers” and they clear it perfect and I straddle the back of the landing. This type of steep jump is usually built as a double so hard to find safe ones to practice on. I guess I need to be convinced to drive my heels through the bottom bracket and keep weight over the BB on such steep lips like approaching 60 degrees. I have talked to guys doing it and they feel like they pop vertically, not against the angle of the take off. I would love to see this covered in an in depth video and even more side shots in slow motion, pausing to explain the movement of the head and hips, and forces on the feet and hands. I also have a son who can hit steeper stuff than me and I really want him to learn how to properly transition to expert and pro lines, because he is going there, hopefully with some good techniques. I think you are the one to do it.

I've found 2 things, 1. Find a table you haven't done before and hit it first time like it's a gap jump, don't give yourself the opportunity to just half- commit and land on top, try to clear it the first time you jump it 2. Choose a point of commitment on the trail and when you reach that point commit to the feature, then you can focus on the task ahead and won't be worrying about if you're gonna do the gap or not

@pbillings808
@pbillings808 4 года назад
8:00 He retreats to the back seat to counteract the forward rotation imparted by being too forward on takeoff. Drive the heels even harder, pushing the bike slightly forward before takeoff which will result in a push that is exactly in line with the acceleration of gravity PLUS the ramp. Staying vertically over the BB means the push from the ramp -- perpendicular to the slope at the lip -- will be BEHIND the center of mass (pretty close to hips). Any force not directed through the center of mass causes rotation.

Timely video. Just got a new hard tail with some crazy geometry. Love the bike, but sometimes it feels like the back end is heavy and my feet come off the pedals. Guessing that since the front lifts easier, I'm getting too far back on the lip when I don't really need to.
@richdrewtherideseries
@richdrewtherideseries 4 года назад

Great vids Rich but I have a question: In my country we learn to have a good attack position on the bike for jumps which is achieved by synchronizing the body´s center of gravity (two fingers beneath the belly button) with the Bottom bracket (center of gravity of the bike). Locating your hips over the bottom bracket, as you recommend constantly in your vids, you are effectively putting your body´s center of gravity much forward than recommended. Isn´t that dangerous???.

Hey Raymond! Great to hear you're getting more confident. Getting lift is a product of getting deep into that athletic position coming into the takeoff, opening up your hips in time with the bike coming off the lip, and keeping your heels driving through until the rear wheel comes off the lip. Keep working at it, you'll get it!

I feel like my problem is with my arms. To bunny hop, to manual, to wheelie i have to pull on the bars. I feel like arms are rarely brought up. I understand preloading fine. But then i need to pull the front wheel back to get it up and i end up off balance from that.

Think about using your torso to do what you are currently doing with your ams. Pretend there is a rope looped around your upper back and connected to the handlebar on each side. Only way to keep the front up is the keep your torso back.

@@richdrewtherideseries thank you! I appreciate you responding. I’ll work on that! Should I let my arms straighten as i do that or keep a little bend in them?

I was out today and I felt a lot more comfortable on the jumps today. I have been watching the videos that Rich has been putting up the last month or so. If I was closer I would come to one of your jump clinics to learn even more. Thanks!

Maybe do a video on how to avoid getting bucked. To me it seems scary not to push the bike out, I’ll get bucked for sure. Do you get bucked easier on a full suspension bike? Thanks

Hey Billy Ray! Come in with your feet level and hips over the bottom bracket, that'll go a long way in helping you not get bucked. I think it's easier to get bucked on a full suspension since you bring the rebound in to play.
