As someone who voted in the referendum over NZ's flag I would just like to say that there were so many great flags submitted that would have done our country proud. The problem with that referendum is the country only voted after the Government at the time narrowed down the contenders and got rid of the best of them. We were then left to vote over four flags that were all very similar as two of them were designed by the same person and the only differences between them were the colours, one of them was also a fern (but in black and white) and the last had a Koru (a Maori symbol), again in black and white. Many people were put off the two that were the same and there was a lot of anger about those in particular. There was also anger over the fact that none of the flags that we were able to vote on included the Southern Cross.

Example of a worse flag: Many of the US State flags are merely the state seal on a solid background. The flags of New York and Michigan are very similar visually.

You wouldn't believe it, but the flag of the New Zealand Fire Service is even worse than the one you showed. It's literally the flag that you showed, but the light blue field is dark blue and the circle is replaced with the fire service emblem (which doesn't belong on a flag in the first place.)

I personally liked the old Rwandan flag too, it was unique that's what I've felt. Btw, Bangladesh flag also have changed. Can you spot Bangladesh in 4 seconds?

I'm honestly sad New Zealand didn't change their flag in some way. The Silver fern looks so cool. Being easily able to tell the Commonwealth states is nice and stuff, but originality is better.

Though, in regards to your Belarusse comment -- here in Canada you do in fact see the same phenomenon (though it is dying out rapidly) with séparatistes québécois using the Québec flag in lieu of the Canadian flag to try and forge their unique identity (though, you also just see if from proud québécois like me who enjoy being in Canada, but also really love this province).

The word you're looking for for Canada is COMMONWEALTH. That's why it had a Union Jack on the former flag.

Enjoy your enthusiasm. Our ( ex) Canadian flag was even more complicated The Union Jack itself was a composite flag...add this to the crest and...the numbers add up. The reason for the stylized 11 point Maple leaf was so schoolchildren could draw it. The older flag was only drawable by those with advanced art degrees. Also, a proposed complicated 3 leaf version was dismissed.

There's also here South Africa that changed its flag recently, and some neighbours like Namibia.

All the provincial flags of Canada have British imagery still (excluding Québec, whose flag references France anyhow): the Union Jack on British Columbia, Saint George's Cross on Alberta, English coat of arms on Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, Union Jack and Saint George's Cross on Manitoba and Ontario and a Union Jack mimic of sorts on Newfoundland And Labrador. This is one aspect of those who say that they don't like the Red Ensign because it bears the symbols of foreign states, even though all the other provincial flags reference Canada's European (British excluding Québec) history. If you don't like flags of the Mother Country, maybe you should look to changing all the coats of arms and flags of the provinces. Moreover, this makes the Maple Leaf --- a flag undemocratically installed --- more of the exception than the norm. If I had the decision, and won a referendum on the subject, I'd make the Red Ensign the national flag and the Maple Leaf the symbol of the military and a relevant national symbol. One of the arguments origially proposed for the flag change was that the Red Ensign Canadian peacekeeping soldiers wore may lead to them getting confused as British, something that happened in the Suez Crisis. This is why I'd still have those in the Canadian armed forces wear the Maple Leaf. I'd reinstate the old air force insignia as well, but keep the navy's flag the same. I would fly both flags at government buildings. I liken this to the Confederate States Of America, actually, as their battle flag became far more recognisable over time compared to their several national flags.

Let's just say that New Zeeland is the only anglophone country with a decent electoral system... Perhaps not what I'd choose myself, but it works well and addresses most of the issues that the majoritarian/pluralitarian systems most other anglophone countries are using.

I like how the representation of England, three leopards, come from the Normand's flags. Which make the former Canadian flag even harder to interpret (a lot of emigrant in Quebec came from Normandy).

Thanks, that was very well done. I love flags as well, and it's what got me interested in geography. Back in university (early 90's), I had a collection of miniature flags of most nations, and I still remember having the apartheid-era South African flag, and that of Zaire (of course now it's the Democratic Republic of the Congo). Please do more flags!

One of the major reasons for the change in the Canadian flag was that when Canada began acting in the wider world such as the peace keeping in Suez the Union Jack in the flag resulted in people thinking that it was connected to the British who were involved in the fighting. to remove confusion and to indicate a separate foreign policy the new flag did not include the union jack. However the union jack is still retained as the ceremonial flag and a version of it is 5 provincial flags along with other symbols in the many of the others. The new Flag based on the national colours going back to 1922 red and white and the maple leaf which had been associated with Canada for well over a century ended up being selected for the flag.

I get that you like flags with the union jack on it, but if the flags of the countries get confused with other countries or the identity of the country does not fit the flag it's only logical that they change their flag

Your description of the Canadian coat of arms on the Red Ensign is only partial. The English Lion, Scottish Lion, Irish harp and French fleur-de-lis symbolized the four largest and founding ethnic groups of Canada. Similarly, the flag of the City of Montreal, my hometown, contains the St. George's cross on a white background with the following symbols- Lion, thistle, shamrock, and fleur-de-lis in each corner.

The old flag was colonial and a symbol of segregation, and the new flag uses the colours of the Boer republics with the colours of the ANC, and black to symbol the people, green to symbolise the land, gold to symbolise, well, the gold. Canadian prime minister L.B.Pearson was a major peace broker in the Suez Canal crisis. The Egyptians were very distraught with the British and as a consequence the old canadian red ensign flag became a problem for Canada diplomatically, it’s what prompted the gov to change the flag.

10:45 Agreed - Australia and New Zealand are true loyalists with their flags having a Union Jack canton - a symbol of their allegiance to the Crown and pride in their heritage. That being said, the Union Jack IS flown alongside the Canadian Maple Leaf on most legislative buildings in Canada, so we'll forgive them. Even if their Red Ensign was (is) the most beautiful flag in the world.

Myanmar (Burma) changed their flag in 2010 but I like that during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Taiwanese people would wear the then current Burmese flag on their clothes and banners. This is because it very closely resembled the banned Republic of China flag, instead of the Chinese Taipei flag

The Red Lion comes from the Scottish House Stuart, the 3 lions comes from House Plantagenet who ruled England, the fleur-de-lis comes from the French House of Bourbon. Queen Elizabeth II coat of arms is very similar but without the fleur-de-lis because she has no longer claims the French throne like previous British monarchs did.

Did you know some people in The Netherlands want to change the Dutch red + white + blue? They want to make the red back to orange like the dutch flag used to be. (The prince's flag) They only changed it to red because that was cheaper and better preservable. By the way, the flags of New York, Albany and more cities in the old New Netherland colony are based on this old Dutch flag.

I like both flags but I do think it is time for change. New Zealand actually had 2 other flags between the Union Jack and the current flag but one was used for maritime and the other was only for a short time and was basically the same thing. But we love u back

IIRC, any previous flag of the US, concerning the number of stars, is still considered an official flag. I could be wrong in that.
