I've read a few books on the subject and am reading The Orphan Master's Son. I think my "fascination" started when I discovered Yeonmi Park's channel and read her first book. Been following her on YT and looking forward to her new book that's coming out soon.

No, I don't have a fascination with North Korea. It's a screwed up regime that has a stranglehold on it's citizens and the entire government needs to be executed. The people of North Korea have to be taught that it's okay to smile and think for themselves. The only good think about North Korea is it's citizens but the military and government can burn to the ground with the help of gasoline and matches!

Imagine the Soviets gather you in a room and point at you to be their de facto. Then a war (that YOU start) happens 4 years later and cements your power. The Korea you see now is the Kim family just cementing power as they were breathing a sigh of relief they weren’t ousted during the Korean War. It’s basically an antithesis because to these guys “Democracy” means a bunch of White peoples screaming about government in a room and nothing gets done. ONLY in the decisiveness and wasting of time aspect is the Dictatorship better, not better, more expedient. Not worth the price though.

They suffer because there was a power vacuum pre and post World War 2 and the victors of World War 2 split Korea up like they did Germany and when we (United States) tried acting like the world bullies because we had an Atomic bomb, and their intelligence noticed we weren’t so quick to use it again, Korean War happened and the situation spiraled from there as their Communist state life lines dried up into the 80’s and their Juche ideology has led to the denial of the freedom of expression and movement of the citizens. As time goes on, the more isolated they remain, the harder it is for them to break away. Life’s answers are never simple. “Because of God.” If God can’t make you starve when you eat a full plate then God wouldn’t make these people suffer if the geopolitical situation hadn’t pushed the happenstance of it all. And Stalin and Kim’s are jerks.

@@FanTube0001There have actually been some attempts to grab power over there, problem is, with how the current set up is, you’d have to have a Chinese Prime Minister (or President I can’t remember which) back the fuck up out of you and basically instantly cross the border to make sure the hardcore DPRK members wouldn’t mobilize and put you down. And none of the Kim’s would survive, sorry, hate to put it that way, but since Kim Il Sung created that Cult of Personality in the early 60’s where his family is basically worshipped, any insurgent or rebellion forces would be forced to take decisive action as they’re too widely worshipped now to let them live, at least from a military coup standpoint that’s what someone would think. It’s a place in the world, it’ll take that treatment until it doesn’t anymore.

Here's a crazy story that came out of North Korea that I just learned about recently. A group of college students were expelled and forced to work in a coal mine because they were in possession of South Korean movies and TV shows. After listening to them the authorities slaughty students were speaking with a different accent by magic. Therefore they were expelled and forced to work in a coal mine. At least they weren't sentenced to the gulag
@JessicaGarcia-xf9wr
@JessicaGarcia-xf9wr Год назад
Another crazy one is when a grandpa committed suicide because of the conditions that North Koreans endure through so they punished him by death even though he was dead already and also punished his family Because of labeling him a coward also means the cowardice runs in the family so they were sent to a label camp for the rest of there lives
@dragondude9637
@dragondude9637 Год назад
@@JessicaGarcia-xf9wrposthumous execution. It's where you publicly execute someone even though they are already dead. It used to be carried out on someone who committed treason and was so hated by the community, yet they died before being caught or executed....but their corpse is executed anyhow. It's 100% a scare and revenge tactic to frighten everyone who thinks of committing a crime that the deceased did. It also gives the people a morbid satisfaction to see the condemned get executed and just imagine they were still alive at the time of sentencing.

I'm going to go the DPRK this year before I move to the US - it's one of my goals, like yours, where I want to visit every country in the world. However, even though I have the trip planned, and I'm doing all the necessary paperwork, I cannot help myself but to still be terrified to go there. For the first time ever, I'm going alone to a different country, since my girlfriend is American, and my friends don't want to go through the trouble of obtaining the necessary paperwork to enter the hermit country. I'll be there for a week, staying in Pyongyang and go to other provinces. I'm excited, but scared. How did you feel before you went?

It’s kind of a hard situation because the Imperialist Japan at the turn of the century opened them up to occupation from foreign forces after World War 2; then allowed for the Soviets to place the Kim’s in the first place and the following Korean War allowed for their power to cement and grow astronomical in a VERY short time. When you isolate things or people, it becomes very difficult to reach out when your education, travel, and contact to the outside world is controlled by the state. Like Russia and China at the same time would have to do a serious 180 on their policy since World War 2 and condemn NK for any dissenting military leaders there to act on ousting Kim for change. Besides that, another war would have to happen either involving China or Russia or both so that they’d be so distracted, the NK people could wrestle the country from him.

Them having the messed up Famines can be explained away, but let them send a bunch of people to die in a world scale war. NEVER say never.

The first comment is quite strange... In my hotel in Pyongyang I had a BBC channel on air in my room, featuring a missile test launched by North Korea. This news was shared during our first dinner on May 18, 2013 among our group. For Westerners there are hardly any restrictions, as long as you do not mingle with locals.

The labor camps out away from the city part of North Korea... it sounds like the most horrible thing I've ever heard in my life. Forced abortions and burying children alive... only to name a few. It goes on every single day and makes me want to campaign to free North Korea.

Actually I think it is too simplistic to present it like this. How did North-Korea get into this militaristic type of government ? I think you actually build up the tension between countries east and west. A better approach is to try to remove the tension between NKorea and the rest of the world. Probably not easy, but some have tried with some success. The current tension has a long historic backdrop which I'm convinced you know quite a bit about. Japanese militarism vs. China and Korea->World War II->American blocade->Pearl Harbor->American bombings (of Tokyo)->Fight over Okinawa->Hiroshima/Nagasaki->Chinese Revolution-Korean war/ Back and forth between North and South->38° demarcation line cease fire->Fear of American use of nuclear weapons against North Korea->Continuous military and ideological tension->East and west nuclear arms race->Cold war-> Tension between east and west millitary and ideological blocks.. North-Korea is just one player in this whole picture, but because their very placement between Soviet-union (Russia)/ China and the westernized South-Korea, Japan and Taiwan and the war history, they have great difficulty in escaping from that history. They were very hard hit by the Korean war, don't forget it. Nuclear use seems always a real option. What you describe is all a result of this. How to get out of the tension is the question, please put forwards some suggestions to do that. The powerty of the country is a cause and big issue, is tough western sanctions then a good tactic ? The obvious very real foreign threath to the regime is another factor to explain its actions. Again how to lower the tension is central.

This is a travel channel on RU-vid... it's not the United Nations. Claiming that Drew is somehow responsible for "building up the tension between East and West" is quite a statement. Implying that Drew has a responsibility to provide suggested solutions to a complex geopolitical issue that has not been able to be resolved over the past 70 years is unusual.

It happened because of Japan who conquered them in the past, and because of WW2 and Stalin's communist ideology. After the war, the Russians were in control of the North, and the Americans were in control of the South. They tried to decide how to set up a government to run the entire country, but because of their different ideology they instead agreed to split the country in two until a later agreement was made. Kim Ill Sung took advantage of the situation to seize control of the North and its been like this ever since.

The history of Korea is messed up too. It’s like, it did better than the South ONLY in the 60’s and early 70’s then fell off as soon as Communism started toppling near the Bloc. Famine, drought, famine, drought, and you guessed it, another flood followed by famine. It’s like the How To guide of the polar opposite thing you do to run a country.
