Ah, I remember the summer where my grandparents kept falling every week. Grandma one week, Grandpa the next, then Grandma again, and even a few times falling together trying to help the other. I definitely learned the value of consistent strength training from that saga.

Both of my kneecaps have been broken and are arthritic so no weight on knees possible. I’ve fallen and been assisted by my dogs through the years. Hilariously different dogs had different strategies to help. They all got me to my feet however.

All great ideas! Thanks! Something we did for my mom when she was going through chemo and had next to no strength and my dad just couldn't lift her when she fell was get an inflatable chair and portable air compressor (5 gallon). We never needed it after we got it for her, but I tested on my 260-pound son, and it raised him to the seated position slowly and effectively. It was an emergency kit that my dad would have been able to use easily. I hope this helps someone.

I have fallen at least twice on my knees on concrete in my younger years but now have arthritis in both of them. I finally was able to get my left leg up under me, but getting my right leg to flex to push up was difficult. But I finally got up Thank God 👍🙏

Great video! I have one method to possibly add to your repertoire! I have quite a history with falling, and we were trying to figure something out to help rather than dialing 911. Our daughter found an inflatable chair for $800 designed especially for this purpose. Instead, we decided to order a Coleman inflatable twin bed for about $75 and keep it handy. Whenever I fall my husband lays it out flat and I roll over to the center of it. Then he inflates it and I sit up, take my time to make sure I’m not dizzy, and then stand up. This has worked well for several years and many falls. We’ve since discovered I have degenerative scoliosis and I’ve been through PT, which has helped me increase my strength, and I’m doing better. Anyway, I think this could also help others. I mentioned it to my neuro-muscular neurologist and she said she planned to share it with her patients. Thanks again for another great video!!!

I’m pretty athletic and felt that falling only happened to “old” people, until it happened to me. Laying on the ground, I couldn’t believe it, but luckily I was strong enough to get up. Since then, I don’t take things for granted, am very aware of my surroundings, and assess very carefully what I’m about to do. If I feel there’s a possibility of falling, I don’t do it or have someone else present to watch.

This is very good. I fall every year or three (all my clumsy life!), and the past decade or so I can't get up alone. However, I've found various ways to get myself up, depending on what's around me. One was maybe the easiest and best I ever had: I had a deep air mattress, with a built-in air pump, in my bedroom where I had fallen. Unable to get up in other ways I scooted and pulled the bed around until I could deflate the mattress. Then I crawled onto the mattress and sat on it (though could have just lain down). Then I turned on the air pump to inflate it. The mattress lifted me easily into a sitting position. I've always thought that a mini-mattress with air pump would be a great and inexpensive "chair lift" for people like me. It's possible it could even be battery powered, so actually portable.

With joint replacement, it sure feels impossible. But…cost benefit is….it hurts until the task is completed,and you’re up. With your next appointment, ask to see the PT. Build confidence by working with what you’ve got. Most people have mammoth furniture from early married days. Pull a couch cushion off to the floor. Now you’re half way there, you’ve shortened the distance to your goal. The wooden frame is better for the lift up.

The way I have done it (twice) is to get over to the sofa, take the seat cushions off and place one on the floor. Then stack two next to it. Then you get your butt on one. Move onto two. Then onto the now uncomfortable sofa. Pick up a cushion and place it on the sofa and then scoot onto it. Rest a while. Then get up from the sofa as you would normally.

After a fall when there people to help you get up just get everyone to chill out. Assess your body first to see what or if there is any damage before tryin to get up. Many people will be willing to jump right in to help you get up but just tell them (politely) , "Let me check to see what is hurting before we start to get me up."

When my husband was in end stage Parkinson he would fall in the middle of the night and I couldn’t get him up. I finally realized I had a lift on hand. I got my blowup mattress and put it next to him (deflated) then I rolled him over on it and hit the inflat button and in no time he was at bed level on a soft surface By this time we were both tired so I just covered him and made him comfortable so we could deal with him in the morning and get him back into bed. This saved so much tugging and lifting for both of us.

I've learned the hard way after taking a fall that I am not able to put ANY weight on my knees or hips. So, getting on my knees or rolling over on the hip is super difficult. That's why upper body strength is so very, very, VERY, important! It's so important to be able to pull myself up from a seated position on the floor onto a stationary chair, (NO WHEELS ON CHAIR!) it's not pretty, but I calmly do it. If I need to do breathing exercises to calm myself down I do that first. And let the panic subside. I've also learned to keep overstuffed sofa pillows situated close by so if I ever take a spill again I can grab a pillow or two (one for each knee) and get myself on the pillows and using my Booyah stick (sold in Bob and Brad's store) and upper body strength, I am able to pull myself up using the stick firmly planted on the ground. Edit: even using the big cushions off of your sofa may help. That stick has been a lifesaver for me!! *And no, I don't work for Bob and Brad or work as a pretend physical therapist on TV or RU-vid 😊*

Please do a similar video on falling somewhere outside. I was strong and fit when I tripped over my feet avoiding the door on my van with its spare tire about to close on my arm. My body was twisted and as it untwisted, the torque threw me almost 5 feet from where I had been standing. I broke the femoral neck. Somehow my knee of that leg was bent and every little movement caused excruciating pain. I live on 4 acres as do my neighbors. I was 120' from the roadway. When I realized I was severely injured and could not even sit, I started yelling for help. Fortunately, my neighbor had stepped outside, heard me, and sent her daughter to me, who called an ambulance. Plan B had been to use my elbows to try to inch my way to the road where I had a chance of being seen. I have made a good recovery after the hip replacement. I now have my phone on a neck lanyard that has a pocket in which I put everything I would need in a medical emergency. I also am never outside my door without some kind of staff in my hand. I am 81.

Interesting ideas, guys, and I'm sure they'll work for many. For me, however, the extent of my pulmonary disease prohibits the extreme movements you demonstrate (arch up onto bed/couch, backside lift and roll onto bed/couch, even the gradual book-lift building would be too much). Fortunately I've yet to fall, but I know from exercising and sometimes having to do hiusework near floor level that I am able to get up using the hands and knees approach. The rub, you ask? Profound arthritis in both knees. Resting my weight on bended knees is like kneeling on Legos and fire. I get nauseated and short of breath with the pain, and because I'm usually unable to move out of that position quickly as movement increases the Lego and fire experience I'm stuck in the bent forward position that itself impinges on already limited diaphragm movement. Now combine all that with the anxiety I already have from knowing what I'll be in for before it ever gets to that point and I'm primed for respiratory emergency. A while ago I started avoiding the household jobs that involve being on or near the floor, which means no one is doing them. I live alone and am independent, but God help me if I have to even think about getting on my knees.

My mom started falling a lot. I sure could not get her up from the floor, so I ended up buying a bath lift chair that is meant to let someone get down in a tub and back up. Didn't use it in a tub, but when she fell, she was able to get to a sitting position, and I was able to get the lowered chair right behind her butt, help her skootch back onto the chair, then it raised up to a normal chair height that she could stand up from.

Having a smart speaker helps too because your contacts are saved and you can 'call so and so'. While they won't call 911, they will call contacts saved as rescue with the non emergency number. My Alexa has been perfect for falls. Sometimes I call a neighbor, and sometimes I call rescue

I fell outside, onto the only piece of concrete on the entire two acres. Hurt like crazy one knee & elbow, also, cracked both wrist. The pain was so intense that it was about to send me into shock & felt like I would throw up. Thankfully there was cheap wire plant stand I could drag closer & then was able to push off with my good elbow & knee. There was a swing, that i might have tried to get to, if there hadn’t been the plant stand near. I’ve turned my ankles enough to know that if I don’t get back on it immediately, that the pain will only increase, & I won’t be able to move later.

I have had right knee replacement. It's difficult and I've had bone bruises trying to get back up off the floor. You have a pillow, that helps to put under your knee. If not, might have to work at crawling to a steady structure, like the couch, bed or a counter top. Am usually by myself or the phone is charging. Luckily have found ideas to help pull up on something. Hope that helps.

@UCqSYQMSdwxfqudvSH8D2BgA I belly scooted to a chair once when I fell at work. I was alone in the department. I was attempting to sit down and the chair rolled backwards and I missed it entirely. Now I make sure it’s a chair with arms and I gave a firm grip before I start to sit.

I was 3 weeks post hip replacement and was too close to the edge of the couch when getting up with the walker and slid to the floor. I ended up scooting to the stairs and using the hand railings to get up. My husband was home but it was much easier for me to find a way to get up on my own.

Good tips. Might you be able to offer suggestions to assist someone else off the floor? I’ve had to help my dad up after episodes of syncope, and he could not assist much. I don’t think the book tower would help…. The fire dept is always a good option for “lift assist” if there is no injury. And 911 if there is. Thank you!

My father (80) suffers from not only diabetic neuropathy in his legs, but vertigo. He told me just the other night "I gave mom a scare" as he had gotten up at 3am and fallen behind a big chair and wall mantle.

I'm wondering, if I call 911 and I can't get to my door to unlock it, how do they get in? Do they break my door?
@wolfling2039
@wolfling2039 Год назад
If you have a trusted neighbor who’s home most of the time you can leave a key with them. If that isn’t an option you can put a door lock on that has push buttons to put in a code and you give that code to 911 when you call but be sure to request they call the responders with that info. You don’t want your code and address going out over the radio. Yes, you can change it when you get home but if anyone dishonest hears it they might ransack your place before you get home if you’re hospitalized a few days. Don’t leave a key outside for someone to find.

If you fall or if on your knees picking up something and you want to get up, there is no immediate support to utilize and your main issue with Neuropathy is lack of sensation with your toes and your afraid to put any weight on them for fear of breaking the toes your can't feel, what do you suggest at that situation other than maybe preparing in advance but if in a fall, there is no chance to prepare. The fear of breaking the bones is not comforting and I'm not looking for future problems. Thanks for the great videos

When I fell, I was in so much pain. I knew exactly where I hurt myself and had to wait for the pain to subside in order to figure out how I was going to get up.

I feel like the ones Mike showed from the king koil couch and the ones that followed after will not be for seniors as most don't have the upper body strength or the core muscles. Even Mike, so young and fit, was struggling. Can you show what to do if there are no furniture or books around. Then how do you get up?

Hi Bob & Brad, Sorry to hijack this video with a question on another topic - but can you give me some advice on DEAD HANGS for herniated disc? I have an incredibly tempermental L5-S1 herniated disc (all the others are fine). I've been doing dead hangs from a pull-up bar as part of my regimen for years now. I've always thought that these were ideal for decompression, but I've recently read some naysayers saying it causes too much anterior pelvic tilt and lordodis (?), which is bad for the back and discs? Is there some truth to this? My dead hangs are done on a doorframe pull-up bar with the hammer grip. Because there isn't such a drop, my knees are bent and the feet gently touch the floor, but I otherwise let all my back muscles completely relax. I do this for approximately a minute at a time. Many thanks
