I find it very stressful walking alone outdoors, need a loo break after 20 mins, fearful of dogs having been attacked by a dog in the past. For me the gym treadmill is massively better for exercise.

I personally have the same awareness issues of walking outside in unprotected areas, having also experienced a dog attack. My solution is the treadmill, but I pull up videos on YT that are nature scenes. Also lots of travel videos out there where people (I watch a lot of English walkers) go and explore villages or nature trails.

I’ve had 3 spine surgeries & told I needed another when the sciatica was getting intolerable. No way. In March, I started walking every morning. I walk an average of 2 miles in a local cemetery which has hills & unpaved areas. Therefore, I’m getting a variety of walking conditions. I love listening to the birds & it’s very peaceful. I was recently advised to buy Kizik walking shoes by my podiatrist because I have severe pain trying to bend over to tie my sneakers. Wow, they are a game changer! I now own 4 pair! They have the wider toe base also. Thanks guys for these great tips! Btw, I already walk backwards for a few steps on the hilly areas! You really feel the different muscles!

I learned of the value walking backward from a Pilates instructor for horse riders. It is so good for activating & opening the hip flexors. Tight contracted hip flexors is such a common problem for so many of us who spend so much time in a sitting position. When they are tight, they cause compensations in posture and gait that make painful trouble.

So true. My walking improves greatly just from stretching my hip flexors!

Regarding walking toe first: I saw a video a couple years back of a man who was recreating the way people dressed, worked, and walked during the middle ages. He based a lot of his information on the art of the time - drawings, paintings, woodcuts. They depicted people walking, and even running, toe first. So perhaps that was the natural way to walk. I wonder if the walking changed when we added heels to our shoes.

Great information. An unfortunate thing is as we get older, larger prostates, etc., we pee more, drop more, have less control, so people will self treat by drinking less, so they wee less, which causes all kinds of problems. And where we tend to take more and more medications, having less liquid to process them and our food, leads to self created issues as well. Thank you for these, especially supplemental info regarding foot shaped shoe options, which is trending everywhere as more and more people realize the opportunity for making pennies.

My favorite way to help people transition away from heal striking is to have them walk/run in place. I have never had a single person do this with heel strike! Then, I ask them to try it in place with a heal strike - everyone hates it! So, I have them go back to ball-of-foot strike that is natural (I transition to weight bearing on my heal). Once they are in-the-zone, I tell them to lean forward et voi la!
@candierichard8931
@candierichard8931 9 месяцев назад
I tried what you said, walking in place, it seemed like i was marching in place, is that what you meant. I never moved forward at all. It is definitely ball of foot strike. Not sure what you mean by transition to weight bearing on heel? i have tried when walking to strike with ball of foot. i really think it bothers me more just trying. Than walking as I do.

I walk backwards downhill to save my knees. It's a little tricky cuz I can't go too fast, but if i walk downhill the normal way, it kills my knees. This is good to know if you live in hilly areas. It's much easier to walk up the hill than back down the hill, I find.

I discovered walking backwards accidentally. I need both knees replaced but it's not an option at the moment. So right now, the stairs in my home are a problem. I discovered walking up or down slowly backwards while holding both rails eases the tension on both knees a lot. I don't do the stairs any more than I have to and I do take it very slowly. Going up and down sideways also helps.

Altra shoe quality has taken a real nosedive. They wear out very quickly. If you buy a pair make sure the retailer will give you a full refund vs store exchange should you experience premature wear.

@@libbyannstew8775 I am disappointed in how long they last. The uppers will look fine, but my feet/back will tell me that the support has broken down. I’m resigned to it & try to find deals on them.

Hey good video. I know you're not getting paid for shoes but, will you give me the brand names of the wide toebox shoes? I wear a size 15 so I am limited in the shoes I can find and have to order online without being able to try them on. Any tips on comfortable walking shoes? Thanks

I've been looking at diabetic shoes ❓ because of the couple strokes I have peripheral neuropathy in my feet I looked at my feet and they're these huge ademas on each of the top of my toes 😳 now I have a bunion problem I recently healed from the fastidious or whatever he called the swelling on the bottom of the foot, it was a result I believe because I pulled a hamstring on the back of my side. Do you recommend diabetic shoes for my feet problem ❓ 🤔 Let me know if the soul of the shoe is too soft and it makes the pain worse and is really bad for my sciatic. 😳😁

Do you have any additional advice for those of us, who have always stood with our knees snapped back? Whenever I hear how the glutes are engaged, I find mine never are! When I stand, my lower abdominal muscles do not engage. I have been told by physical therapists, that my body has learned to use different muscles for walking. (There is also some connection with how flexible I am at 71?!?) Sometimes, I am able to engage the lower ab muscles, but it never lasts long, and some days, I can’t engage them at all! Is there any help for this?

Wish you could recommend types of shoes. I have no idea what shoes to get. Years ago a bus T-boned my car, damaged my knees, shoulders, head, eyes, etc. and caused a traumatic brain injury. While healing up, I just automatically started walking on my toes (no, I didn’t notice as brain injuries cause all sorts of issues). My calves got HUGE (again, I didn’t notice). A few years later, I was finally sent to PT, and after WEEKS of therapy, my therapist noticed I was walking on tiptoe, and he asked me why. I said I hadn’t noticed and didn’t know why. It’s been almost 14 years now, I’m still in great pain and have chronic pain in knees, arms, shoulders, hands, rotator cuffs, and more. I can’t do most of the stretches you recommend before walking. Just walking to the next room is difficult. How do I start again?

Good tips, I seem to have super tight calves and I suspect the feedback from the treadmill is the cause. When the tight calves hit, its friend plantar fasciitis joins the party.
