I like the 'lettuce' top, but the long bell sleeves that I won't be able to push up .. is a big no. And while I find Lilysilk clothing beautiful, classy, and sophisticated, it's mostly dry clean only and I am so done with that in my life .. lol.
I won’t buy anything white or cream that has to be dry cleaned as cleaners are notorious for not changing their solvent frequently and clothing will get grey from dirty solvents; no matter how expensive the cleaners are, I have found that to be a major issue. I will handwash cashmere and some silks.
scalloped edge. I agree with all of your assessments on what looks cheap. I have pants with a short zipper and now I see why I never wear them. I love your hair, makeup and gray hooded sweater in this video. Thank you. Your personality makes me smile too!
Your hair looks amazing!! I agree with many here - the last top is a no-go. The lettuce edge seems outdated and the exaggerated length of the sleeves will not hold up well. Your instinct about the green J. Crew sweater was spot on. Aside from the buttons not being right, I thought the fabric had a bulky or "spongey" look about it, and I didn't think the collar shape was very flattering.
just wore my black vest for Thanksgiving. It was from the store "forenza" which is no more. It used to be next to express. I bought it back in the 90's, it still looks so good. I knew some day it would come back in style!
Maybe people can’t afford Lillysilk, they are very expensive brand. You should do videos about styles not how cheap something might look😢the sweater from express is in most people’s budget, I guess we all look cheap….sad
I thrifted a Talbots vest years ago that works over and under shirts. The thing I look for is that the back is the same material as the face. The one I have has like a blazer collar that really completes a few shirts I have don’t have any collars when worn under like a tank.
Your instincts are right about the scalloped edge top. The sleeves are a bit too long and I think the edges may lose their shape over time. Also the edges on the bottom make it less versatile since it’s likely to create bulk if you want to tuck it in. LOVE the LilySilk items. Always so classy!
It’s a lettuce edge, but sometimes they are called a scalloped edge. I hate those edges on tops. The sleeves would definitely look bad after wearing them icier and over again, and they get dingier than other parts of the sweater faster. Definitely a no.
I LOVE the bell-sleeve sweater!! I think that it is STUNNING and the sleeves adds a feminine touch to the sweater; in fact, it is my favorite of all the things that you have shown in this video. However, you should buy what you feel comfortable in and love. Thank you for all that you do I get so many great ideas and information from you!
I knit my own sweaters I want natural fibers and most sweaters today are acrylic. I will buy a cashmere sweater. My favorite yarn is a sport weight merino or wool cotton blend season less. But I do like the tops you are showing in a knit fabric. I don't really put them in a sweater category
You are SO right on all your points...some I haven't thought of before, but when you described them, I wanted to say each time, "You know, she's RIGHT."
I know what you mean with the jeans and spandex. I don’t purchase those anymore. I also do not buy mid-waist jeans. Zippers are too short and the waist chops me in half. Now I only buy higher waist pants in everything. I’m much more comfortable and just looks better on my petite frame. Just a note: When I purchase tops or sweaters in white or ivory, I size up. I find that it elevates the look and if it is a lesser quality material, it’s easier to disguise when it’s not so tight.
Yes. Midrise jeans make me look boxy and I have a waist! Tops have to be very form fitting for them to work. High rise accentuates my waist. Much more flattering.
Thanks, Anna. For me, the biggest factor in whether something looks inexpensive and is going to wear horribly, is the fabrication. That is the first thing I look at. I may be a 'dinosaur', as old enough to be your mother, but I cannot stand the fabrics used today, even on items that are pricey. All the modal, viscose, acrylic, rayon, polyester, etc etc...unless you are into fast fashion and don't have plans to wear longer than a season, they look horrible...especially modal that will pill after one season. I realize it all comes down to cost, but when I see things that are expensive and the fabrication is as cheap as can be...it just burns me! I would rather purchase an inexpensive Gap shirt that is 100% cotton or linen, that I know will look more expensive and stay looking good through many wearings and washings, than a pricey top of synthetic garbage...imho. I find the same with shoes; what used to be considered 'cheap' shoes with synthetic insoles and synthetic soles instead of leather, are now priced at what used to be ' good shoes' pricing. I even see expensive shoes made of polyurethane- UGH..I know, sound like "...back in my day....", but a real pet peeve of mine.....inflation comes in, and quality goes out. 😪
I agree there are a lot of poorly made items! But clothing quality has come a long way in some areas as well. It’s unfortunate that we all have to be detectives to find the diamonds in the rough tho! ❤️❤️
I can remember buying REAL leather Nikes for $50.00/$65.00 many years ago….They’re all what I refer to as “plastic” now. The woven sneakers are a no from me, too.
@@StormSongs7 yes, I still like my ‘ chucks” and I did score the Adidas Sambas in leather but it took me 6 mos. of online stalking and paying higher price on Farfetched but I love them; so comfortable and really versatile with so many outfits.
@@ANNAREID29agreed! You mentioned the “ cheap looking” buttons on the one shirt; I have found replacing buttons, especially on a blazer , instantly elevates the item. When I am ready to rid my closet of items, if they have good buttons I will clip and save. Can find quality buttons online now and can make all the difference on a garment
@@faas6679 Changing buttons on a garment is a good thing to not only make the item look better but it makes it more personal. Not sure if that came out right…adds a bit of your own oomph & personality to it.
I'm with you. If there is something about the item you aren't crazy about, it's best to just eliminate it from consideration. it's unfortunate that our experiences now is ordering online, getting it and not loving it only to have to send it back. I'm not a sender backer. Too much trouble to pack it back up, take it to the post office or wherever, and maybe pay to mail it back. I don't even know the process. Too much! I can't cope! So it ends up in my house, not being worn and I'm poorer. I'd rather go try on in the store, look at it, feel the fabric, etc. LIfe is too short for just, "I'm not loving it.'
Ohhh I went down the “vest” rabbit hole this summer and it was rough 😅. I was inspired by your vest looks and let’s just say..I still don’t have “the” vest ❤😂. I kept a cream one from express and I ended up not even wearing it all summer..yeah, that’s how much I loved it 🤦🏽♀️
The green JCrew shirt looks exactly like one my grandma had. She wore it with beige polyester pants and black orthopedic shoes .It's the buttons .Lol Your videos are my favorite!
The top that you are unsure of looks really cute, I really like it. That said, what I think or any of us think doesn't matter as much as much as what you think because as you know if you don't love it, don't keep it💕 *My English teachers (every one of them) would be gasping in horror at my grammar and punctuation here, but you get my point😮
Lol I only hear scratches on the chalk board when someone uses “their” instead of “there” haha and then sometimes I’ll accidentally mix them up 🤣🤣 so I can’t even talk! ❤️
I am done with cheap sweaters, especially eyelash knit. I stick to wool, cotton/linen, cashmere or blend with a small % of synthetic fiber. The only non natural knit I tolerate is chenille but good quality chenille yarn that won’t break easily is hard to find.
If you're on the fence about an item, say no. Don't settle. You deserve clothes that make you shout YES!... quietly, though... and to yourself if you're in a store, just saying.
I got the same H&M vest and was also super surprised by how weirdly it fit! I’m altering it to fit only because I’ve had trouble finding a black vest with a collar.
Another great video. I am suddenly hunting your vest. H & M = HIT & MISS never thought of that but YES! Great call on short zippers. I now want to go through all my jeans. The scallop edge top looks much better tucked in so is that defeating the purpose? I love the sleeve but do you want to wear it out? I think the sleeve AND the hem is too much or overdone. Will you wear it or do you "need" it?
I got a similar black vest from Banana Republic Factory. It was very affordable and has a belt/cinch in the back. My chest is 34DD while my waist is 28, so it's difficult to find vests that fit. This was perfect.
What I’ve found that works is to purchase items that fit in the bust and get them tailored. I found a silk blazer for $4 and got it taken in. It still came out cheaper that purchasing new and fit is beautiful.
I've also noticed a trend with "drop sleeves", and I am not a fan. If you carry any weight at all in your arms, as I do, it just adds more bulk and emphasizes it and it is very unflattering. I prefer the seam to be right at my shoulder. But this drop sleeve look is everywhere, and it is very frustrating. I think it looks cheap too, tbh
Helpful Video! Thank you for the discount code to LilySilk. I purchased the Cropped Zippered Sweater in both gray and black. I am short waisted and hope these still look cropped on me. OBTW, I love the half tuck.
I had two of my granddaughters here the other day. My husband and I had to go somewhere. And I put on a cashmere sweater. I had them both feel it. And they liked how soft it was. I told them to learn their fabrics. I’m sure I’ve given both of them a cheaper version of a cashmere sweater. And I gave them all some other clothes. Plus, my oldest granddaughter, who was visiting from out of state. Brought them some clothes. I say them because I have three older granddaughters, and two young ones. I bought a pair of wide leg jeans from Old Navy. And I really like them. I started off with a cheaper version just to see if I would wear them. I think the sleeves are too long on the lettuce edge top. It seems like almost everything I buy, the sleeves are too long. I usually just turn them up. But you can’t with that kind.
You’re a fashion influencer so style up the cheaper looking sweater and make us love the vibe. I can’t afford cashmere but I take care of my garments ,even the cheap one’s. A half tuck with silver jewelry perhaps..a messy bun and mom jeans. There ya go..lol
No on the top. Besides the edges, the sleeves would drive me crazy. Too long to leave full length and you can't push them up. When I see a lettuce edge, I always think that the fabric stretched out when putting a regular hem in, so that's how they solved the problem in manufacturing.
When I'm not fooling around in my bike and need to look decent, my go to brands are definitely Rag and Bone, Lafayette or Lafayette 148, Go Silk, and Rock and Republic. They are nice pieces and timeless classics.
I only wear jeans with with 97%-100% cotton. I don’t even play myself with anything else. After awhile of wearing jeans with too much stretch, I get soggy booty and thighs. I’ve also moved away from synthetic fabrics. They just don’t lay well and I don’t like the way they feel after awhile. I still love and wear my Athleta plants because they make quality products, but that’s my limit.
I like ribbed sweaters. I like a bell sleeve...but that one you bought where the sleeves are intentionally too long? It looks like you hung your sweater up to dry and the sleeves stretched out. Looks accidental rather than intentional. Never thought about how zipper length changes fit, but maybe that's why I don't like some of my pants...especially having a lower tummy roll.
Did you do something different with your brows?! They look nice! Love that lip color to. JCrew has been a miss lately. I purchased a card again and it started peeling the first time I wore it.
I LOVE your grey hoodie, but it is So far out of my price range. I would perhaps splurge on a $50 hoodie if it was just perfect, but $200 is Way out of my league. The last sweater you asked about with the "lettuce" fringe seems dowdy to me; only because they were in style 20 years ago and I wore it back then. lol
I agree with you about the top. The ”lettuce” edge does make it look less expensive. I also think the cut, ribbing, and possible material aren’t the classiest.
I like the last top, actually! I agree with another comment that the extra long bell sleeves honestly probably aren’t super practical, but I still want it lol
The scalloped top looks like it doesn't fit. Sleeves seem way too long. I agree with you completely on the fabric of jeans. I prefer 100% cotton but those are hard to find so I try to get at least 98% cotton. My question to you is what jeans to wear with tall boots? Anything other than skinny jeans bunches at the knees but I hate the fabric composition of skinny jeans. Any suggestions?
I have a lettuce detail top that is short sleeve and crop, love for high waist bottoms but would not want to tuck in, I think the one you have was made the wrong way, wring style, but love hanging out with you on uTube❤
I think the issue with the lettuce trim is that it looks juvenile, which feels out of place on an elegant person like you! The same shirt with a clean trim would be more harmonious on you. 😊
i think the top fits you well but i’m not a fan of the bell sleeves i like to push sleeves up and the bell sleeves don’t allow that i also don’t think it allows for versatility with the item i’m not sure i’d keep an item that i think i’d get sick of or can only wear one way.
That last top was from Dissh.... everything they make looks so classy/beautiful. That style bottom is definitely a staple from them, I have a dress version of that shirt from them I love, super high quality feeling, no regrets.
I feel the same way about the express sweater, Love all the other ones, I take very good care of my sweaters as well, I still have some sweaters/tops from the Loft going back 6 years ago, I kid you not, no longer buy a lot of clothes for I'm retired now, but sometimes with company's its either a miss or a hit! Love this video!
Speaking of loft (and express) in the late aughts/early 2010s I could find so many great pieces at those stores, wear them on a weekly rotation through the season, and they lasted YEARS. Why they have chosen this path of cheap fabrics and poor craftsmanship is beyond me.
Another great video! Thanks! You are righ about the first top 100%! The last top... was not so flattering, since you asked. With the tightness, those extremely long sleeves were just out of balance. The "lettuce " edge also seems quite outdated. Everything you normally pick Anna, is spot on, though. 😊
One can wear sleeves like this while living in the time of the Baroque (1600 - start of 1700), having a lot of servants and maids and not being forced to earn the living.
Here's my take on the trends that are back from the late 90s, like the lettuce edged ribbed top and the chenille ribbed sweaters and why I've been avoiding them: I remember having those items the first time around and turning my nose up at them as I pulled them from my closet and threw them into the donate bag. So I guess my answer to your question is that I don't like that edge 😆. I think it's well done on your top, but I just relate it too much to those shirts I tossed long ago. That JCrew top must have been so disappointing - would have been so much cuter with a johnny collar!
Surprisingly my body shape really suits Jeggins. But mine have a longer zip. I have wide hips and they dont create horizontal folds where my widest area is
The only thing I liked about the bright fuschia top is the color, and I agree that it looks low quality. I also agree that the H&M jeans look odd with the short zipper, and even if they didn't look odd, the fact that they give you a camel toe would makes them a huge NO. The green J. Crew top I thought was cute, and I didn't have a problem with the buttons, but if you didn't object to buttons on the shirt as part of its look, you could easily swap them for something you liked better. I'd be a fan of the lettuce-edge top if the sleeves weren't ridiculously long. I don't know how you could even function with those. I loved the video!
hello Anna, i would actually loooove if you had a video just for vest styling; i love the piece but I'm struggling hard to make it work on my wardrobe :) thanks, love the videos ;)
I don’t hear a lot about Rag & Bone but I did purchase a blazer from them & it is one of the most beautifully constructed pieces of clothing I’ve ever had. Pricey yes but worth every penny if you can swing it.
Hi Anna another great video! :-) Yep it's a Lettuce edge top and you are correct it looks not finished properly and that makes it look cheap, I'm seeing this edging a lot this fall season and I AVOID!!! Big time hate it! The stupidity is, it doesn't cost much different to edge the top properly, interesting that the online pic doesn't show the lettuce edging hmmmm! Totally agree with you on all of the fall miss's! Thank you 🙂
I totally agree with what you said about colors of knitwears. I tend to buy basic pieces from inexpensive brands (ik ppl say you should do the opposite lol), and I got this tan color sweater from Topshop years ago and I still find myself wear it often in winter. It doesn't look cheap and I can style it with a lot of options. The stretchy jeans I also don't like, since their fabric usually is too lightweight. I always shop jeans in store so that I can feel the fabric and see the stitches.
Vest are very hard to make as ready to wear because there's so many adjustments on what is really very 'little fabric. Bust size, shape & height, torso length, waist measurement, armhole, etc... All places that need to be just right or it'll gape and look cheap, especially in unlined thin fabrics like linen. Bring your vest to a seamstress or tailor and see if they would use it to make you a new one, or better yet, make a pattern and a mockup (to verify the fit) so that in the future you can take the pattern to a decent sewist to make you new ones out of the fabric you want!
I do like the look of bell sleeves but they very much get on my nerves when I wear them because you always have to hold them up when you are doing stuff. You can be sure that I get them dirty or wet (dragging them through food or whatever) or knock stuff over within an hour of wearing them.
Don’t love the lettuce top. Also, you look gorgeous, per usual, new hair style, and your eyebrows look amazing! Love your content. Keep up the good work! Happy holidays 🎉
i like the last top but i think the sleeves are a tad too long. i mean, i know they are supposed to be long, but they seem a bit TOO long, if that makes sense. like theyd always be in your way and dragging in everything (like .... your food)
While the top looks cute, those long sleeves are a no-go. I like the look, but I’d dip them into something while eating breakfast. And what’s the use of those pretty sleeves if you have to push them up all the time?
I recently discovered you. I was bing watching your videos. Saw one where you got your colors done. Hmm. Send the bell sleeved shirt back. Love love love that silk outfit.
