I love these videos because as a 30-something gamer, there are a lot of references from my childhood. There aren't a lot of gaming videos from an adult's perspective like these. I don't even own a Playstation but I watch every Friday.

This probably won't reach rob himself, but I wish to send out a big thank you for all the Friday features, not just for the laugh and great entertainment they provide naturally every time, but for the deeper level they always reach. This was definitely one of the best Feature Friday episodes yet! Mentioning Guitar Hero and The Walking Dead and Minecraft gave me so much nostalgia and really made me look back at how far video games have come. Truly amazing how revolutionary the art of Gaming really is!

The way you described Guitar Hero is exactly, EXACTLY how I felt when I first played that game. And mind you, I was playing with a freaking PS2 controller (we don't have a guitar peripheral). That's how undeniably fun the GH experience is.

I think Fortnite is so boring but that's just my opinion so if you like it then good for you. I am more of a single player guy, I like games with story like GOW, Yakuza, Persona etc.

Eh, not my kind of game either. Still can't deny that it has changed the industry. I mean sure one can argue the PUBG was actually the game that started the battle royale thing. But Fortnite was the game that really popularized it.

Completely agree. Nowadays open world is a must in almost every game, and most of that freedom came from GTA (even the first one)

I'll agree as GTA3 really popularized it. And I remember advertising not being too big and almost word of mouth at first. Like hey there's this crazy game you have to try. Me I had heard of GTA back in the day and I was like o the third one. I wonder what this is. Blew us away with open sandbox and lots to do. Sure a lot is basic back then but it's the foundation for the wildness we have today

It's not gta3, it's gta vice city yes gta 3 maybe the first open world game but it's not popular enough the first time I heard aboyt gta is through gta vice city and it's my first game I ever played

vice city and san andreas may be more popular but you have to consider what gta 3 did in its time it made a formula that worked and made gta a mainstream game, vice city and gta:sa followed the formula and the mechanics that worked in gta 3 and made it popular. this open world mechanics we see in almost half of a years release have roots in gta 3.

Excellent list, Rob. And for all the 'Dark Souls'-Esque definitions thrown around these days, it was Demon's Souls that starred the trend--truly magnificent game. About the only game I might add is Undertale, which blew up the gaming world when it came on the scene.

Actually, Wolfenstein 3D was the first. Commander Keen and a couple of generic wannabes followed before Doom itself came out.

Not really, there was no scope and you can't aim up, so you can shoot enemies from below as long as you are kind of pointing at them. Videogames are complicated you can't expect a genre that sells millions of copies to be exactly the same as it was over 20 years ago.

Metal gear solid and/or Tenchu introduced proper stealth which was a game changer back on ps1. Tony Hawk was also a phenomenon on ps1. GTA3 was revolutionary and really popularised freedom and open worlds in games. Demon's Souls introduced the whole 'Souls' formula to gaming. Shadow of the Colossus brought art and scale. Unfortunately many modern games have kinda brought microtransactions, paywalls, loot crates, locked content, and DLC. It has changed gaming but not for the better.

Aah, Guitar Hero. Many years ago I knew a guy who was obsessed with G.H. Totally obsessed. I once witnessed him after a New Years Party, so intoxicated he could barely stand or make a coherent sentence - but somehow completed “Through the Fire and the Flames”, on expert, only missing 2 or 3 notes. Nothing but muscle memory. I couldnt even reach the end of the song when sober!

A lot of Telltale Games' older games like 'Sam & Max' and 'Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People' are really underrated. I find them more enjoyable than some of their recent work, before the whole "choice driven" shtick.

NapalmX717 I agree, I love the Sam & Max seasons and the Monkey Island versions. I've tried the Walking Dead and some of the other Telltale games, but I wholeheartedly prefer the earlier games. I'm not saying that the later games are bad, they're just not my cup of caffeine. I've replayed the Sam & Max games at least 5 times though.

PUBG came and just blew up out of nowhere, despite being bugged out to hell. Fornite being a PVE already didnt have much attention, but didnt blow up until the FREE BattleRoyale mode popped up (because yea, that mode is free) I personally prefer the base game

I would add the GTA series, they got the "open world" craze started. DOOM (or wolfenstein 3D ), for starting first person shooters. COD modern warfare, for starting squad based online multiplayer, a formula repeated to this day....

You might hate or not interested at some of these games, but you can't deny their impact. Like me, personally, never play and will never play the likes of Minecraft or Fortnite, cause that's not my thing, plus I actually don't really understand their hype, but they do affect the gaming world big time. Not liking something, doesn't mean we can't acknowledge their value and influence.

Not a PS game but the PC game Alone in the Dark back in 1992 was terrifying. The first survival horror game. The monsters moved slowly but seeing it or often multiples coming for you as the panic rose. So scary.

I can say without a doubt that it's the toughest thing I've ever done in a videogame... the countless hours, getting past that god-awful intro only to be stomped out by The Solo, absolutely daunting experience (not to mention the loading screen message XD) but beating it was one of the best experiences I've had yet

I honestly thought you were going to miss Demon's Souls, but you came through in the end! And lets not forget how, on top of everything you said, the online system "changed the world", too. Back in 2009/2010, being able to invade another player's world, leave messages, read and rate messages and go into another player's world to help them in Co-op, and having none of this feel "gamey"(because it all made logical sense within the world of Demon's Souls), this was the most mindblowing thing ever. Oh, then on one level, you go to invade a player and you get to play as the boss for that area, haha. It never stops with this game. It's a collection of some of the most mindblowing moments ever. I'm surprised you didn't mention MGS1, Rob.

I remember how much I loved playing Guitar Hero. I eventually preferred Rock Band for its variety (full band first), and the actual additions it added to the genre. It was so cool playing a game with something than a typical controller. :D And yeah! You mentioned Demon Souls! :D Like no one talks about this when a From Software game is mentioned.

Mike Davidson It's just the same map over and over again. The goal over and over again. Played it 20 times, you've played it 200 times. Battle Royal is just a boring game mode no matter the game.

Guitar Hero & Rock Band were a ton of fun, and TWD was very good and the Souls games (esp. Bloodborne) are great, but I guess I'm more of a PS exclusive or action & RPG kinda gamer..story driven, cinematic, & single player. I love Borderlands, but haven't ever played it co-op. I own FFXIV (complete ed) but haven't opened it. I think FF7, RE2, and Tomb Raider got me started gaming. I do think that Minecraft is overall a positive thing for kids and creativity, but not Fortnite.

You arent gonna miss much, then. I stoped playing Minecraft after 1.7.2 for the PC because the base game felt too congested and heavily modded and whatever version the mobile version is because of all those ridiculous microtransactions they’ve slowly been adding in the past year. Fortnight is simply too cartoonish and ridiculous, for lack of a better term, with how gun damage is based on whatever tier that weapon is, and not what the weapon is.

Rocket League had little to no impact on the world. It came, gained popularity, lost popularity. Overwatch didn't as you said came from nowhere. Want to talk about games coming out of nowhere: Counter-Strike. It came to PS when it was already big, but when it was created it was just a mod done by some guys.

you guys do release that Team Fortress 2 was out LOOOOOOOOOOONG before Overwatch was EVER even a concept? Hell, the only reason it succeeded where as TF2 faded into obscurity is the fact that Blizzard had the money to promote the living hell out of it, Valve did not.

"Valve did not", maybe on launch, but they most certainly did when it started to fade against competition. Money/promotion wasn't the reason it faded, the game had aged and a well polished successor was out. If Valve actually, yknow, made games again, they could have made a successor of their own and been likely equally or more successful than Overwatch was, but they don't care about games anymore.

Demon Souls is the only one that changed the world for Good. With the exception of Tell Tale games, the other 5 have DESTROYED the world of video games.

The moment i see any normal late night in my country, or the international news and i see Fortnite, not being mention as a threat or a time consuming mistake, but as a thing. That is one of the moments where videogaming felt normalized. Famous people playing it, popculture enjoying and using it, i feel like that improved to world's concept of videogaming. It did create a trend of Battle Royale mods in every game? Demon’s Souls is the reason I still play video games. I had started getting bored with the games at the time and remember seeing the trailer for it on Amazon while at work. The soundtrack drew me in and I was like, “well that’s new, I’ll give it a try.” Nearly a decade later I’m still playing games and overjoyed by the titles that takes chance in doing something different. Also it was my second platinum trophy after Jak and Daxter, and I have gone on to platinum every souls game and bloodborne since, save scholar of the first sin. All in all I don’t think I would be playing video games today if not for Demon’s Souls, and as such it hold a very special place in my heart.

Im glad to say that I've never played any of them. The only 2 that looked remotely interesting were Guitar Hero and Demon Souls. The rest are for 15 year old goobers who have no concept of what good games are, no wonder they're so popular.

I would like to add Call of Duty 4 to this list. Modern warfare changed the first person shooting genre with it's massively popular online mode (killstreak, loadout, perks and xp leveling systems became the norm) It also kindeld the interest in contemporary shooters. Cod sold well up until the 4th game but when Mw was released the series turned into a behemoth

Naygen Fortnite is much more popular than PUBG, and many people are pushed away from PUBG mostly because of the length of the games and map size

If we're going off why you included Fortnite I would switch out Dark Souls And Walking Dead for WoW or even Pokémon or the phone version Pokemon Go if you want a game that came outta nowhere. Games that literally bled into real life coversations of non gamers. I called Overwatch and Minecraft and agree with Fortnite and Rocket League and Guitar Hero. I guess maybe Dark souls but not really. It took gaming by storm but not the world. And deff not Walking Dead.

The first Monster Hunter is worth mentioning as well. We got more MH games up to Gen U and World. It created a genre which others like God Eater, Toukiden, Soul Sacrifice picked up.

One amazing PS1 game that changed the game world was Ape Escape. It was the first Sony game to necessitate the use of the dual shock analog controller. Without its success, game controllers might not have been the same.

Well, I'd add in the original God of War as a game that came out of nowhere and changed the world. Its effects are still felt today. Another one would be Grand Theft auto 3. Sure, the previous games were pretty popular, but the third one came out and rocked the boat so hard it capsized. And of course, who can forget Batman Arkham Asylum. No one saw that one coming and it's often seen as one of the best games ever. I think that should cover the ones I thought were missing.

I'd want to add Final Fantasy VII to that list. It opened the floodgates for RPG games and titles like Ni No Kuni and Dragon Quest might never have seen a western release.

I'm surprised that Metal Gear Solid wasn't mentioned at all. The metal gear series, show the games can be a truly cinematic experience, while also being a great great way to play games. For example interesting gameplay mechanics that involve the metroidvania formula but not so deeply, as well as resource management sort of, and boss battles evolve tactics and timing as opposed to shoot the glowing spot

Dark souls has a huge impact on gaming industry that it’s now has its own genre. And it’s came out of nowhere. This game difficulty is slightly above average, this game is like dark souls, etc.
