you didn't put enough points into spotting, obviously. that happens to novice players. if you reach the value for the check then the cutscene will appear. merchants and save points are optional
Another thing is when you can't find any items for miles and all of a sudden there's health potions and whatnot in every corner. Slow way of preparing you for the worst.
okay, brilliant idea for a game. You're a mysterious merchant. You have to fight/sneak through dungeons before the hero, killing and stealing valuables on a timer before he shows up and at the end of every level you arrive at the point and sell all the goods you stole and taken to the hero before running off to the next level .
Indeed, I have always been kind a flabbergasted how these merchants manager to come all the way into the dungeon before your just not well equiped fully grinded party without a scratch
Great idea for a game to see the 'hero' of the game not only not be the character that the player controls but, also, be unwittingly an accessory of stolen goods, rendering their 'hero' status suspect. Particularly if the hero laughs off the merchant's actually true tales of how he got the items as assuming the tales to be merely 'dark humour'.
Simon Oliver I hate those rspecially when its not ckear there is no way back at thst point and I sometimes miss things to collect and areas to explore fully and end up loading my last save again to do that.
One of my favorites is "Put shiny thing A into ominous receptacle B". There is no way the giant robot power core will suddenly awaken the long sleeping behemoth that is about to step on your face. Video games would never do that...
I am not gonna lie this channel and my PS3/PS4 got me through my PhD. I remember playing their videos back-to-back in the background whilst working at my desk at home or in the office. Thanks PlayStation Access!
Or what about if you have a party, and you suddenly find yourself separated from them, then after a bunch of travelling, you're suddenly reunited with your entire party?
lightningalex2 Thats a good one, the team member is always strong against that specific enemy Oh youre an ice wizard? Cool this thing resists literally everything but ice
Near the end I thought it might lead to an 'unexpected' Delsin boss fight. Maybe we will have to wait for a video for' 7 times a character returns after you have forgotten them'.
Every time I have a presentation in college the music of my life changes and the door locks behind me when I enter the class, but saddly there are no checkpoints.
How you know a boss fight is coming: When you drink a weird potion, and get put into some weird dream, where there's an arena, and you have to fight some devil thingy- Far Cry 3, you know...
Dark souls and Bloodborne are the most obvious with the walk up to it. Look at the blood starved beast, you walk through a field of burning crucifixes into a huge open church.
I don't know about the Cleric Beast. When I got to this area I pretty much had it in my guts that something is about to show up. Still they way it showed up was kinda creepy in a way. Appearing from the roof like it just came from a casual walk around town and you just think "Wait... these giant beast are common around here? Oo" No cutscene, no intro, just showing up like it's nothing. I had nightmares like these once.
The Caretaker? Yes, but the Frog King is in a big round arena after a relatively easy level in a DLC which wants to make sure you're not under levelled and also there's a cutscene before that and you're there to fight a monster. You could instead mention the Goliath from BaW, you just arrived to Toussaint, you're not in a dungeon or anything and he just pops out of nowhere
It makes you think though, doesn't it? You find merchants in those ridiculous places with all those enemies, and yet nothing ever happens to them. I'm starting to think that maybe some of those merchants should be doing the questing, or at least potential recruits. Considering some of the places you find O'aka, I'm betting he'd be a more efficient party member than Kimari.
The Broodmother in Dragon Age: Origins employs most of the Seven SIgns... and its final reveal still works. That flippin' creepy poem still makes my skin crawl.
I agree. The atmosphere, the poem, the whole thing was fantastically disturbing. Even now after all this time, its a very vivid memory and one of the only times I been truly unnerved.
I had a mix of fascination and disgust while making my way through that old thaig listening to that poem. It was awesome, but horrible at the same time. Oh the memories!!!
otterpoet Oh This Poem: First day, they come and catch everyone. Second day, they beat us and eat some for meat. Third day, the men are all gnawed on again. Fourth day, we wait and fear for our fate. Fifth day, they return and it’s another girl’s turn. Sixth day, her screams we hear in our dreams. Seventh day, she grew as in her mouth they spew. Eighth day, we hated as she is violated. Ninth day, she grins and devours her kin. Now she does feast, as she’s become the beast.
the too over powered borderlands the pre sequal as trap clap had an op combo using freezing weapons whoops here a 2 phase boss that is super agile and has attacks that hit the entire floor so you have to jump while dodging their skyscraper high attacks and staying far enough away from them to dodge their explosion attack and 30 minutes after that here is a flying boss who spawns buffed up version of all the enimies you were facing
My favorite is the "eventually" boss fight sign. When you are going through an area that doesn't have ALL of the boss fight indicators, but you know that you will be passing back through on your way out and THAT is when they will get you. I specifically remember in dead space, walking through an oddly peaceful area with only some corpses, knowing I'd be going that way again to find a SoB to lay me out. I think the worst part was knowing, like they were taunting me.
When they crank up the enemy levels a bit, or throw some special enemies that you've never encountered before, kind of as a special guard to make sure you're prepared in a way.
Instead of the door locking after you enter, big red flag for a boss fight is opening the super hard locked door that you had to traverse a big portion of the area to find the key (mechanism or whatever) and then get back to the door.
Honorable Mentions: When there's a skull/danger symbol on the minimap, and when there's an unusually ornate door (typically with a unique key/item required)
Exception to the "save point = boss time" rule: 'Tales of' games. At least the Xillia games had save points EVERY-BLOODY-WHERE, so they kind of stopped making you expect bosses after a while. Hm, I wonder if there's a tell in SRPGs...
"Pay attention your virtual life could depend on it" Spoken like a man who's played way too many games 😂😂😂😂. And FYI most developers may have taken out save points, but auto save still gears me up for a boss fight.
Sometimes it's not a mechant, but a healthy collection of loot scattered about. Possibly in chests, or barrels, or whatever kind of container the devs prefer. No fuss no muss, maybe perhaps a bit too easy. Usually in this scenario there is an abundance of healing items... and, of course a door leading to a big, empty-looking room that will obviously lock behind you once you're through.
Another one is when you "just happen" to stumble upon a powerful health potion while exploring a dungeon. "Yeah...I'm sure nothing bad is in the next room..."
JEEBUS B-52!!!! CAN YOU PLEASE JUST LET ME FISH IN PEACE!? I KNOW THROWING DYNAMITE INTO THE RIVER IS EFFECTIVE BUT I THINK THIS IS A LIL FAR! (literally happens every damn time....)
Another two I notice is while wandering the map, you suddenly find you cannot go back the way you came, and you are forced to go forwards.. to a boss fight... and certain doom due to a lack of prepare time. The other is the big heads up about final bosses, in that you get a flat out "Continue when fully armed, no more save points." Think Kingdom Hearts games right before the final boss.
When I am right about to enter into an obvious boss battle area, I always turn to my brother and say "Hmm...this looks like a boss battle area right? Am I ready to face this dude?". Usually the answer to that is "No".
This one kinds goes with the Shop and is prevelent in games like Zelda: You come up to a room full of chest of pots that have everything you need to fill you up to 100% in the one room this means the boss is in the next room.
How about when you gain, or lose a party member? I find in Final Fantasy games in particular, new party members are usually followed up by a boss fight. Sometimes they join in the cut scene that you referenced in the video.
one of the most obvious ones is when the game gives you a large amount of ammo/health items in one place just before a door. This is a classic move in Resident evil games
Video was enjoyable, as always, but I have to say, that was a really good cut away with Rob leaving psychic Mike and arriving at the couch. Whoever edited this did an excellent job!
Here's another: Non-matching door. You are traveling through the dungeon and every door you see is the standard door, but that next door at the end of the hallway is a portcullis instead. You see this all the time in Skyrim, those unlocked double-wide doors that don't lead to a new area? Those have bosses.
Rustic's Trophies & Gaming I know right, the game literally came out only a couple of weeks ago and I put in 16 hours and still haven't gotten to where these spoilers are.....
How about instead of the door locking behind you, when you have to collect three things to unlock a big ominous door you just know that it's going to be a cutscene followed by a boss fight as soon as you do.
I love these videos. I’m a student and I work full time, and I usually stress. But I play these videos while I work and everything just fades away. Thank you, PlayStation Access!
Every week I look forward to the Friday Feature and every week I forget to 'like' the video, then a skit between Dave and Rob appears and I remember the effort they've gone to, so they earn that like. Well done guys!
I like how you were breaking down the finer points of playing a video game when it leads up to that always expected but sometimes unexpected BOSS FIGHT! Great Job!
nah, i've always been curious as to why. guess there is no explanation to accents, but "r" is a very consistent letter that comes up in the british accent, i was just curious, is all.
It's something we don't actually notice I think it's just a natural way to make words flow together better, because otherwise it feels a bit disjointed
Similar to the merchant in a unusual area, but how could you leave off "finding way more usable items/ammo than the game normally gives you". You have been hurting for health and ammo most of the game but suddenly you enter a room with 4 med kits, magnum rounds, grenade rounds, and lots of hand gun ammo...there be a boss ahead says I.
I love when lists are about characters of video games or their traits instead of the usual “5 video games which have so and so”. I hope that made sense
Don't forget about the One-Way Path (which is sometimes a Very High Cliff), not to be crossed over with the Locked Door of Doom. It's like a part in a platformer game where a moving platform that ferries you across a dangerous area doesn't respawn or come back, after you touch the checkpoint it takes you to. It's too far back to jump and air dash, and the platform was either destroyed or can't be controlled or summoned from this side of the room you're in.
My personal favourite 'save point before a boss' is the zone after you have a gruelling fight with Neoshadows and Angels in Kingdom Hearts. Has absolutely no subtlety that you've reached the final hurdle.
tone shift suddenly changing from bright to darker colors, eerie laughter, npc warning of a mysterious occurrences, blackout portion of world map, clear path with danger sign, recommended level, skull and crossbones, dialogue in the dark at the stories "key" points, a monologue, just to name a few
Similarly for entry #2, instead of a merchant that sells you things they're will be one long empty eerie corridor, with just ammo for all your weapons lying around everywhere. X'D. This literally case for quake 4,which includes all other signs mentioned in this list. Before your reach the final boss the game kills the music and all you hear are the eerie silent rumble of an empty room and your own footsteps, you have to take a super long elevator ride to the top floor, and as soon as you reach the top floor your game is auto saved with a long corridor with no guard rails and a long pitfall beneath. You get all ammo for every weapon, including the dark matter gun, and for some mysterious reason all communication from your unit has been cut off x'D. So you're left to fight the void alone without anyone even knowing of your peril. How terrifying ;(
