If the term "glistening moistly" Makes you want to take a shower, try not to reflect on the fact that for a time after you exit the shower but before you towel yourself off. You too will glisten moistly.
I get the feeling that sounds designers enjoyed their job. They basically get to sit in a sound booth if they need a different sound with stuff to break or smash or clink
@@treyatkinson7564 Probably? Then again, imagine sitting there, snapping celery while watching that horrible animation until you match the sound just right:]
Sound designers pretty much get as far away from the actual implication of that stuff as you can get while still being a part of it. They pretty much get to smash, crack, break and record anything they want until it fits. Plus a huge portion of what makes that stuff hard to watch is the sound itself. When the guy who made that *crack* hears it, the first thing that'll probably come to his head was when he broke that piece of celery or slammed that bag of pasta on the floor and not a thumb being relocated.
Literally my first animation task working in video games was to animate a bear pooping. Had to watch SEVERAL reference videos. Interesting, I'm glad someone appreciates it.
"How sad it is to watch Mario drown! [Shows Mario drowning.] It's so morbid! [Shows Mario drowning.] Poor Mario! [Shows Mario drowning.] Why did they feel the need to animate a character like Mario suffocating to death so thoroughly? [Shows Mario drowning.] Hey - did you notice that his legs twitch while he dies? Here! Let's show you! [Shows Mario drowning.]"
@@blueblank8287 I still remember Star Butterfly drowning on Star vs. the Forces of Evil's Season 3 premiere special. Why, Disney Television Animation Studios, why?!
Hi guys, I did some cleanup animation for Skullgirls and let me tell you what a sanity-shredding nightmare it is attempting to animate the character Double. A writhing mass of body parts, faces, eyeballs and undulating flesh, imagine having to animate that traditionally by hand and keeping every writhing tentacle, loose foot, and sopping eyeball *on model* . I don't think I will ever have the opportunity to animate a more complex, mind-boggling character for as long as I live.
Generally speaking, loops like that are usually finished within a week if not a day. We literally have no time to spend weeks on a single animation. Go chat with film animators for that privilege
Yup. I have a degree in 3D animation, who is still trying to break into the industry, but, we cover literally 1 enemy typically because we have to study that ONE monster, animal, person, etc. to the point of on-sight knowledge of what it is that thing is doing. So some animations can take a day, some a week, some a month, depending on how complex the model is and the animation required.
Yeah, as soon as i saw the title, I was like, you do realize how hard it is to make sure the program works correctly, and make sure the picture/model moves in the way you want with the program, and it would take a couple of weeks at least
The fact that these animations disturbed some people shows how much care the animators put into them. These animators wanted to create something that would get a reaction from people, as well as something that they could be proud of. The animations didn't ruin their day- it made their day knowing they could ruin someone else's.
I think Jim Sterling did a video once about game animators having to go to therapy because they had to research on actual death videos to make game deaths as gruesomely realistic as possible.
As someone who has trypophobia and is a teensy bit of an arachnophobe, my nightmares came to life when my computer froze on a close up of Rom and all I could do was stare in horror.
@@danakennedy1632 Haha, thanks. I'm usually pretty good at handling the stuff, it's just I've seen Rom before but I never noticed the millions of eyes staring at me until today
"Animation is soooo hard. People who do this deserve more respect." - Lord Hater from Wander over Yonder What, I'm a cartoon fan, so this video is an interesting topic for me.
@@JWuKong95 Even basic character designs can actually be more memorable than even complex ones in many ways. Just take a look at Luz Noceda from The Owl House and Finn the human from Adventure Time.
Okay y'all, some of these are effects artists or tech animators jobs. They literally make the whole thing work and look good so please don't leave them out or think we 3D animators do all the work.
Technically a lot of these aren't done by animators at all; physics are set up by whoever designs the model. And yes, we reuse the same physics over and over because it saves time.
I'd have to say Delilah Coppersoon's death from Dishonored: The Brigmore Witches is one of the most brutal. It's just everything from the blade in her gut, to her ruthlessly scratching your face, then the sword through her mouth, finally ending with her body spasming and you preparing just incase she isn't truly dead.
something that still makes me stutter is the bioshock 1 trailer where the guy gets the bee plasmid and he screams as the blood hornets tear out of his arm.
@@Skellyinmycloset Yea, animating the Lurker must have been far more emotionally taxing for Dead Space's animators than Mario drowning... Imagine being the poor sod or on the team of poor sods tasked with not only animating a baby corpse running around on tentacles but also having to animate all of the same baby corpse's intestinal tentacles wriggling around, the attack animations and the damage and death animations. Some poor animator had to decide what a dead baby would look like when it was shot with high energy plasma bolts, just let that sink in for a moment.
I'd probably say when Cronos gets disemboweled in God of War. Imagine having to animate the intenstines starting to spill out of his now very cut open stomach.
"Thankfully, we only have to spend mere moments contemplating the relocation of this thumb". Proceeds to show it 3 times, each more horrifying than before because you know what's coming. Thanks guys. Good job all round there *edit. 4 times. That's great
Ooh, I can imagine animating any of Halo’s Flood would be quite fun. All the twitchy tendrils, pulsating and breathing pores and sacs, the gore... definitely don’t want to eat on the job that day!
@@TheGuardDuck Unless I'm mistaken, it's Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a disease which affects the connective tissue making things such as joints far more flexible than they should be, thus much easier to dislocate. I can't imagine how painful that must be.
@@BladeZero238 Ahhh. I bet it doesn't, or else he'd have a brace. I have Marfan's, which is a similar connective tissue disorder, and stuff's just, loose. And for me, some joints are tight, some loose, and some don't bend all the way, and I had my spine fused because if I didn't, it would have grown bent and crushed my organs, etc... I don't know much about Ehlers-Danlos, other than some people keep lumping it in with Marfan's, or vice versa.
@@TheGuardDuck If those of us wore braces on the joints that try to run away we would be covered in them and actually it's not a good idea to wear braces all the time as that would make our muscles weaker so our joints would dislocate even more. I have Ehlers Danlos syndrome, fibromyalgia and bulging discs in my neck and lower spine and I'm on enough painkillers to knock out a small elephant. DISLOCATIONS BLOODY HURT!!!!
I believe that Ellen has previously stated that Rom's sea cucumber-esque physique doesn't set off her arachnophobia. Rom's spiderlings, however, do bother her a bit.
@@hussein_bdn There's a couple of videos of Luke showing Ellen various spider creatures and has her rating how bad they are. Search for "Worst Spiders in Games, Ranked by An Arachnophobe". Basically the more real it looks (and moves) the worst it is for Ellen, Rom isn't as scary as the Giant Tarantula from Resident Evil.
Agreed. Chris Walker, the Groom, watching Chris Walker murder someone, falling into a pile of bodies, being thrown up on Outlast 2, seeing the henti man (Outlast 2), ect
@@Safiyahalishah Yeah poor Mary. That scene was really gross, maybe not as bad as the groom scene from whistleblower but definitely one that will be burn into your mind
Maybe I’m weird but I actually find that trypophobia thing really badass and even very pleasing from an artistic chaotic point of view especially rom. It’s imperfect and random structure fitting into a mostly symmetrical frame is genuine inspired artwork that I could only hope to achieve someday. Also, that demon from dragon age is sweet. And the hag from Witcher was a thrill especially when you finally kill them it feels that much better because it’s so grotesque. Truly it’s an art form and I think it should be respected in video games and in nature. I would happily spend my time drawing and creating these “horrors” as you so bafflingly claim them to be. Yo but the video is good and I’m a fan of your regular content lists. Love the lists.
Wasn’t there a big mental health issue problem on the Dead Space dev team since they had to look at many real life road accident victims to create the creatures?
As a former lead animator (cartoon, not game) I can say it is a little consoling to know that on a big enough team, you can pass off horrific animation to someone who is enthusiastic about it. I used to call dibs on the scenes with big weird monsters and exploding heads, but when a Thanksgiving episode had the characters eat the family dog, I passed that off to someone else who was cool with it.
@brmbly Marvel's Avengers showed signs of promise about gamers. A microtransaction-heavy live service game that's pretty much dead only 3 months in. But on the other hand, we have FIFA/Madden/NBA2K...
@brmbly Not just gamers though. It's consumers in general. Chips in phones are made from minerals taken in Afghanistan through US invasion & occupation, tonnes of clothing are from sweatshops in China, a lot of big construction companies around the world have their employees living in dreadful conditions, etc. So yea, at the end of the day, we ALL will turn a blind eye on most of these, hence the "they'll still buy it" motto rings true. You have to pick your battles and for most gamers, this battle isn't high up in that priority list if they have one.
The word for Lisa's tech movement is definitely twitching - I've had somewhat similar movement in my neck sometimes due to Dystonia, mainly on my right side only. Definitely a 1 out 5 star life experience to have happen to you if you get overly tired and/or overly stressed at random points.
@@KitsuneSnowB. so you know to trust the people that tell you not to do things, "Hey that person who told me not to put my hand in the fire is now telling me not to jump off a cliff, the fire hurt so no jumping I guess" :P (or at least that's my excuse)

I literally started to feel nauseous while I was controlling the blob in Inside. And it was amazing. It made me love the game so much more. I rarely get physically affected like that while even watching films and tv shows. That never happened to me before while playing a video game, and it probably never will happen again. The game also has the most amazing sound design I’ve ever experienced. Major props to the developers.
As someone who has nearly drowned 3 times in my life so far and has since developed a slight case of aqua phobia, water levels in games are already quite distressing for me. Seeing Mario drown so accurately did not help. My condolences to the animator that had to put that together. 😅😅😰
The twin cooks in Little Nightmares cutting up ppl meat and the grotesque passengers of The Maw breathlessly ramming said meat into their own smaller maws.
@@Blasted2Oblivion Luckily I've never had to make something intentionally gross (and these examples definitely fired off my "ew" senses 😆). But weirdly enough stuff breaks in 3D so often that it's its own brand of body horror 😆 I've seen completely innocent models crunch in on themselves in horrible ways 😅
A lot of the 3D design and animation you'll see in these games aren't too creepy for the creators thanks entirely to them getting to see it develop. They still remember when it had 80 triangles and looked like a pumpkin left unattended near a child with a knife.
I have to put a vote in for some of the stuff from The Evil Within and The Evil Within 2. Laura, when The Keeper's safe head explodes gore, the Obscura, and The Guardian were all absolutely disgusting.
what about the sex scenes in games imagine how the motion capture actors feel after that scene or animators who spend time putting it in the game or the VAs
