I love to hear young people talk about style. For the last 50 years my daughters have been telling me, “this is in style and oh mom that’s so out of style”. I have always just put what I loved and of course could afford in my home. both silver and gold, large or small, and as many plants as possible, if It made me and my guests “comfortable” then that’s what I decorated with. It doesn’t matter what’s in or out what matters is what makes you happy and comfortable. That’s why we call it “home!”

Because of the job market, this new generation is sadly forced to constantly move, every 4 years statistically. So they make their homes appealing for a good reselling price, because theyre not gonna keep it. Im glad i dont live in america lol

I totally agree! Your home is not a museum. I saw such horribly rude comments about farmhouse style on another persons site. They were so insulting and rude about it. If you don’t like something someone else has don’t go there. It is what makes that person feel like home. You don’t have to be rude or insulting about it

Nailed it! I'm 56 years old and I'm definitely drawn to things that I will have forever. And I can tell you, the time flies so fast, you'll go from toddlers to teens to empty nest to grandkids in a heartbeat! Choosing things that will work for the long haul is great advice.

Just an FYI for all my DIYers for the oversized art - canvas' can be expensive so think outside the box - look at clearance options or maybe you have extra drywall in your shed - you can use anything to paint your large art piece even a cardboard box could work! If you have extra wood pieces - maybe stretch your fabric over your own make shift canvas? I live for doing things even cheaper than "cheap" 😆
@birdgirl8390
@birdgirl8390 3 года назад
As an artist I like to throw in that canvas sucks, sometimes the frame gets so bent and crooked that there's no salvation for them. Plywood is the way to go, even my high class artist friends paint their stuff on it. It's sturdy and safe for shipping. Also it's extremely cheap lol

Yayyy to silver and chrome!! Brass fixtures were all the rage in the early 80s. Shortly after that, brass went out and nothing dated your home quicker than brass fixtures (including lights). Silver and chrome are timeless.

Growing up when I did, I remember shiny and antique brass. I remember, in 2005, finally removing the last piece of shiny brass from my “built in 1984” house. Lol. I will never have it again. To me it screams “1980s builder tract house”. It’s beautiful in todays trends but I just can’t do it.

Unfortunately I’m old enough to have seen brass come in and out of style several times. I’ve always gotten a “cheap” vibe from it so I’ve never been tempted to jump on that particular wagon, lol.
@karenryder6317
@karenryder6317 2 года назад
I remember the first house I decorated when I moved to a new town in 1999. It was a late 1880's house and I thought brass would be so appropriate. I could only afford to do it in a couple of places so I did brass faucets and brass framed shower in the main bath and brass faucet and brass paintable wall paper on the ceiling in the kitchen. Guess when brass fell out of popularity--about five years later! Brass was cheap, as you note here--sort of stale and saturated. The all brushed nickel look seemed so novel and cool (i.e. non-warm as Kiva said here.) Now in this popular cycle brass is now classy again. That may last for a few more years yet, but this video and others I've viewed recently lead me to think it could go out sooner than I thought. What will be next, a return to silver/chrome as Kiva says here or will black (or oil-rubbed bronze) be the fresh look or maybe something we can't imagine right now? Same thing with kitchen cabinets. I've lived long enough to see them cycle between light wood (oaky) to white to cherry wood and now back to white again. I've watched "House Hunters" long enough to have heard "Oh I hate white kitchens" become now "Oh I must have a white kitchen!" (And I haven't even mentioned laminate to stone to quartz, ceramic tile to subway tile, black to white to stain-less Some trends are so short-lived that I've heard of one woman who has redone her kitchen five times in less than a decade.

Kiva, you are wise beyond your years! I've suffered from the eye-darts ("look over here, no...over here, no, look at meeee") too many times to like the busy, messy, so-called gallery walls. REAL galleries have lots of space around a few pieces of art so people can enjoy each picture. Thanks for being the first to comment on what I hope is an ebbing style.

@DIY with KB Wow I feel like I’m ahead of the game. I spent about 5 months deciding on what kind of couch I wanted for myself and my new empty-nest and singular home. I decided on white because Ive always wanted a white couch but could never justify it with kids and pets. And I wanted a single cushion cozy feel that was also traditional and timeless. I did spend a lot but I knew the quality was exceptional and the look is just beautiful! It took 5 months to get here but it was definitely worth the money and wait. I will have this couch for 20+ years and I’m in love with it. 2022 here we come ☺️

Total agree with the modular sofa trend! I want and need slimmer and smaller and plan to do that in 2022. My whole house has brushed nickel because I'm older and even now the brass reminds me of the late 80s/early 90s style, so I'm thrilled to hear that silver will be back in style, but honestly I love my silver so it will stay forever and is truly me. I love that you also say to be true to yourself.

I think I'd like to see trends being taken with a grain of salt. If a new trend speaks to you great, but if you're only buying into it because it's new but doesn't really reflect you and YOUR style then I'd like to see more people just ignore it. Don't get me wrong, I understand trends have their place, they play a role in our lives, I just think people jump on the trend bandwagon way too quickly without much thought, and that's what I'd like to see change. That being said, I like what you shared here, especially about the giant modular couches, rounded edges, and vertical space. Thank you for another great video.
@vaderladyl

You won't need to follow trends when you get to curate and polish and discover your true personal taste and style, but many never get to that level, unfortunately. Besides trends are just the whimsy of designers and they are more like guidelines for the clueless, not rules to follow religiously.

Loved your video, Kiva. Totally agree about the "silver". When I bought my house (new construction) in 1983, everything was brass. Brass hinges, doorknobs, kitchen hardware, etc. When I remodeled the kitchen in 2018, I switched it all to a brushed nickel/stainless steel finish. Whether it is In style/trendy or not, I love it. Brass just reminds me of the 1980's. 2021 trend that I did not care for: Cloud sofas.

Also I tend to float between transitional and bohemian. So I buy solid meaningful pieces but it's taking forever to build a space because I felt like all the trends were against my wishes. Thanks for validating my personal views not to try and be like everyone else and really make our house, our home!!

Agree totally. Love large art. I bought some gallery wall frames years ago where you put several 4x6” photos in one frame. Never used them but have decided to get new mats for them which will frame one piece of art. Some are suitable for panoramic pics too. Sofas in Australia are generally not as large or deep as the US ones so have to use less cushions. The seat cushions in my sofas are sewn in so you can’t replace the foam easily. Ugh. Sharp corners on furniture are the worst. Rather have a little gold in decor than items that are expensive to change out. Have made a massive faux floral that suits several decor styles despite being traditional, it’s an awesome statement piece. Hello from Australia!

I have a trick to prevent crooked wall hangings. Put a small Command strip on each corner. (not the velcro one, just the small double sided ones) After you've put the art on the hook on your wall, peel off the other side of the Command Strips. Use a level to get the art level, then press the art against the wall until the Command Strips. You can even pull the art back off the wall if the frame isn't level after you do a second check. After a day, the Command strips are secure, and your wall hanging is level! Even if the wall is banged on, the Command Strips will hold the wall hanging in place. No more crooked frames!!

You are just one really likable person. I just watched your video of the cancelled items & now seeing your mirror I not only see that it's gorgeous, but if you move it over to the left where it goes about a foot or two (but not lined up with) the sofa arm. It will give it that nice off balance look and then a piece of art between where the mirror is now & the right side of the room. When I stage homes & I don't want them to have that awful generic look; I've always walked myself right out into the yard with scissors & hunted for the right greenery:)) It always works & doesn't look so contrived & perfect. I beg to differ regarding chrome and silver. I only enjoy them in the bedroom as their color soothes the eyes and the mind and make you fall asleep easily. On the other hand, it is livelier when you have gold and brass in the living room, and in the bathroom. You tend not to sleep in those rooms, and at least, this works for me. What I want to see in 2022 is a marriage between warm gold and nickle. Also, Champagne silver, like that of Caracole, for everyone.

That would be great if you make a video about investing in the pieces that would work forever! I mean, how do we need to know the piece would not be outdated and we can have it even when our style change?

I DIY large art and get my canvases from the Goodwill and paint over the large pieces. It works great!

Hey, Kiva, I loved all of this. One thing about window treatments that I never see addressed is how to decorate around heaters. I have an 1860 small house. Tall ceilings and many windows - and a hot water baseboard heater running under every single one. I cannot let my curtains go past the sash. I tried and they got crispy - a fire hazard! So how do I do this? Is it Roman blinds for life? Ugh I can’t be the only one

Girl every time you post it’s like I have to watch your video right away even though I try to save the videos for night time when I could watch it without my kids but for some reason I can’t wait that long LOL. By the way I have that black vessel vase behind you as well two of them and it was only 39.99 from Marshall’s! I love them

@@KivaBrent I actually have to thank you because honestly my style changed over the last year and honestly it has all to do with everything you say in your videos. I went from glam to that modern organic and you have no idea how happy I am now because I’m not so afraid to sit on anything or touch anything because it’s not all glass and mirrored and everyone in my house loves this as well so it’s like we as a family are much more happy and it’s just so fresh if that makes sense

I loved the modular/corner chaise sofa, we've had one for 3-4 years now and guess what? We NEVER use the chaise. We're replacing it because we're moving and luckily my partner talked me out of getting another one. Instead we're just getting a long 4 seater so we can both still lie down without cramping up the space in front of the sofa.

Wow! Yes, you are exactly right. Get rid of tiny little things. I LOVE oversized, especially art. Thank you. I can't stand sectionals (they only look good in the showroom) ❤

Love these, but brushed stainless can stay out. Lol Yes to chrome and polished nickel. I think there will be more of a mixed style: traditional with contemporary. Traditional architecture with contemporary furnishings and accessories.

Yes to everything. I'm passionate about polished nickel. It NEVER goes out of style and always looks luxurious. I love a traditional architecture with contemporary furniture.

Love this video! Good stuff! I use brushed nickel in my spaces as the dominant metal and have just a few decor pieces that are a brushed brass. My sectional isn't curved but it has rounded edges. This video was so helpful! Made me feel more confident about my spaces.

I am so glad I found your chanel!! I’ve been binge watching lol I would LOVE 2 particular videos. More detail about decorating a vertical wall. Also, I see tons of videos and pictures that showcase different paneling, but no one seems to explain how to do it. Example is modern paneling around a fireplace that looks like they have reglets and I’d love to know how to achieve that. Keep up the good work!!! Oh and where did you get your branches??

We just renovated our home and I wanted to use brass, our hardware supplier talked us out of it for the exact same reasons you mentioned, and we went with brushed nickel instead. I think it's a really good compromise between chrome and brass. We dodged a bullet with this one!

We think alike in so many ways! One trend I’d like to see is “blending” or mixing of metals. Why does it all have to be “matchy-matchy”? I know it takes abit more finesse to do it right/tastefully but a little diversity makes things more interesting.

Gold and brass in my opinion ages the look. Silver and chrome is more universal. Great video and sense of humor!

It really got to me when you said as we get older, our taste tends to lean on a more traditional style. 🙈 I can now feel my age more lol. This is happening to me right at this moment. It feels so bizarre that I'm appreciating vintage pieces once I hit my 30s.

You are so right about the gold versus chrome. In the late 80s gold was very in but it didn't last but a couple of years. Then chrome/ silver came back with a vengeance and nobody wanted gold anything. Gold Is a trend right now but I think your right, it will be gone soon.
