My favourite starting achievement is 'The Birth of an Assassin' from Assassin's Creed II, where the only requirement is to demonstrate the motor skills of an Actual Baby.

It doesn't strictly fit this list, but in Dark Souls 2 I managed to get the 'You Died' trophy, awarded the first time you die, when I walked off a cliff...before I got to the character creation screen.

Same here, but different reason. Dark Souls 2 has a lot of small enemies running away from you and hiding in grass right at the start. Well, as bad a person as I am, I tried to hunt them down. Hit even one and the whole pack jumps and kills you then and there. The achievement "Welcome to Dark Souls" is pretty fitting in that regard.

The Stanley Parable has an achievement called "Welcome Back", which I guess technically is given to you the SECOND time you start the game because in order to get it you need to start the game, close the game down and then start it again, but the fact remains that you get it by starting the game.

4:58 - Benny's not a terrible shot. He shot you in the head. The reason he didn't kill you is that he used one of the weakest ammo types in the game: 9mm. He even laments this very choice himself if you choose the right dialogue prompt when you catch up with him. So, to put it in the words of Venom in Spectacular Spider-Man, AKA the BEST Spider-Man cartoon: "Right idea, wrong calibur."

Never mind that in real life a shot to the head is always guaranteed to be deadly, specially if you were to shoot someone defenseless like the Courier was in that moment; in real life, lower calibers are actually _more_ damaging. A.22 caliber bullet, which is less powerful than a 9mm, usually only has power to go through the thick skull bones once... which means that when it reaches the back of the skull it will _ricochet_ around the brain.

I remember that both Half-Life 2 and GTAIV have achivements called 'Under the Radar' - for HL2 is for using the radar to find all hidden cache, and for GTAIV it's for flying under all bridges. That's to say, in HL2 it's a pun with the word 'radar', and in GTAIV it's a pun with the word 'under'.

I suspect that these are actually a tricky way for developers to gather statistics on the number of people who bought/recieved the game (perhaps through bundle deals) and those who actually wound up playing it.

Yep, especially milestone/chapter achievements, they can see roughly when people tend to drop out along the story, or which storylines/sidequests tend to be more popular.

They don't need achievements to track anything like this. MS and Sony gather data for every game which is part of their console policies which are passed to devs for feedback and quality reasons etc

Close and partially true. Majority of achievements are based on story modes, unless it's in the MMO category. Story based achievements help assess where some (or majority) of players either lose interest in the story itself, or maybe get stuck on something where the game could be missing a patch or update to move along.

These are really interesting, actually, they’re less achievements and more trackers. Most of these are tracked by the devs to know how many different people actually played the game. It’s not perfect, since a bunch of people play on multiple accounts, but it’s still a good metric for them to be aware of.

Love how Double Dragon Neon was included. I would've had to bring it up if it wasn't. Especially with the name of the achievement, "Skullmageddon's Curse". On the plus side, it's a very good Side Scrolling Beat Em Up game.

Being "norted" isn't actually part of the game though? Even the answer that it's when someone is possessed by him isn't correct. He exists and splits his soul but the game doesn't call it anything like that. It was an internet meme, which is quite different.

Another one for the "Technically not playing yet" group is the new Hitman games. Progress carries over from Hitman 2 to 3, for example, including many of the achievements. I got dozens when I started up Hitman 3, one of which I still haven't earned yet!

I take it I'm not the only person that would love another Sly Cooper game.🙋 It's really interested how lots of the Devs have changed over the years. Naughty Dog - Crash Bandicoot to Jak & Daxter to Uncharted and TLOU Insomniac - Ratchet & Clank to Resistance and Warhawk to Spider-Man Sucker Punch from Sly cooper to Infamous and then to Ghost of Tushima. Could make a cool list video 7 devs that completely changed the types of games they made over the years.

Alice: Madness Returns kind of gives you two for just starting the game. It's not right away, but it's before you get into any real game play. First up is "No Happy Returns", which you get for simply landing in Wonderland for the first time. While this is after some preliminary world building with Alice in the real world, and you have Alice walking about within it, there's little to really do. Following that is "Snicker-snack!", for obtaining the Vorpal Blade. Similarly early, it's your first weapon and what you use for early combat, which comes up shortly after.

In Bladestorm: The Hundred-Years War on the PS3, many trophies are tied to when you unlock new unit types to command. Three of those trophies are tied to unit types you have command of from the start of the game, and you are awarded them basically when you start playing for the first time.

Not really an "achievement" in the modern sense, but in Sierra's classic adventure game "Freddy Pharkus Frontier Pharmacist" you get awarded something like 500 points for simply traversing the main street and entering your office.

I think this counts. In Little Big Planet 2 you get two achievements for starting up the game. If you start playing before 9am you get the achievement "Who Needs Breakfast?". If you start playing after 9pm you get "Just . . . One . . . More . . . Go . . ."

No mention of Zero Time Dilemma? You watch a short cutscene, you call a single coin toss and, if you get it right, not only do you get an achievement but a full ending, credits and all!

Hey all, I'm a soul in search of answers! Corpse Party was way more than I could handle, so I "swore off" any game that could potentially be like that, so I have avoided games like 999/ZTD (and others like Higurashi and Stein's Gate). With as few spoilers as possible, can you tell me if the ZTD series is "like that"? I really can't handle another Corpse Party haha.

@@RedSpade37 From what little I know about Corpse Party, I'd hazard a guess that neither 999 nor VLR are particularly "like that". There are creepy moments, sure, but they're quite brief, isolated and not exactly at the heart of the story. However, ZTD might be a different story: they definitely took the gore up to eleven there. I suppose one thing you could do, if you don't mind running into some spoilers, would be to check the entries for the games on DoesTheDogDie, to see whether they might have anything in particular that you couldn't stomach?

Another great example of this is "Getting your feet wet" in subnautica, which you can get by simply leaving your escape pod. It honestly baffles me how so many people haven't gotten this one.

I remember Heavy Rain said "Thanks for supporting art," or "Thanks for buying my game," and gave you a trophy for it at the begining of the game. Then I got it for free on PS+ and was wondering if that was still there since it was technically a free game and I didn't buy or support anything on the second run (well, it was more or less my fifth run through the game).

these achievements are really handy for the developers as analytics. they can compare the "started the game" achievement to sales to see how many people are just dumping the game in the backlog and how many are actually playing it. And then they can compare "started the game" to "finished the game" achievements, as well as for each "beat a level" achievement to see where players tend to fall off.

Dawn of Man, a game where you build a Stone age village has an achievement called "Launch forth" which you get for launching the game for the first time

Here's one for a game I found completely at random on Steam. DEPO: Death Epileptic Pixel Origins. It's a first person 3D platform where you play as a pixel. You get an achievement called "I don't remember anything" just for starting the game.

Crysis 2 gives you “Can it run Crysis?” for completing the prologue, which is basically an interactive cutscene.

A few good examples of this are in the Sci-fi Souls-like games The Surge and its sequel The Surge 2. In The Surge, just get to the end of the hall and choose a job for your character in order to get your exo-rig. You also get achievements for dying and for redeeming the voucher for gear associated with the job you chose. Like The Surge, The Surge 2 has an achievement for getting your first exo-rig, all you have to do is get past a group of rioting prisoners and a couple of guards.

Here’s another one: Wolfenstein 2: new colossus. Basically when you start up the game, you are met with a cutscene and a choice. You make your decision and then you get the deja vu achievement

What's better than one free trophy? In Caligula Effect you get TWO before the game even starts. You get during the opening cutscene, which leads to the tutorial fight where you get another.

Soul Caliber V gave you an achievement for watching the opening cinematic before the start menu comes up. I missed it for awhile because as the title came up at the end of it, I would hit A button to get to the main menu which would skip the last 2-3 seconds of words appearing on the screen.

+1 on the Subnautica achievement "Getting Your Feet Wet". You start the game in an escape pod that has just splashed down on an ocean planet, and you're about a mile of open ocean away from the nearest dry land. The pod has very little survival gear, so you'll need to scavenge tools and resources to make it more than a couple days. This achievement is awarded the first time you get into the water - that is, as soon as you move more than about five or ten feet further from the spot where you began the game. Interestingly, according to Steam's stats, something like one in seven gamers _don't_ have this achievement. This might mean there are a load of people who bought the game and haven't gotten around to playing it yet, but my interpretation is that one look at that endless pelagic void made them decide curling up in the pod and waiting for death would be better than risking whatever monsters might be down there.

My favourite starting achievement is "travellogue" from OCTAHEDRON, which is literally just completing the tutorial. Funnily enough, it seems like "only" 46.2% of players actually completed it, meaning that a LOT of people probably brought it in a bundle and forgot about it. Also "Quick Learning" and "All Grown Up" from Wobbledogs, which is literally just completing the tutorial and raising a dog to adulthood respectively

Kingdom hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep: a Fragmentary Passage on the Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue (real name) has trophy that unlocks as soon as the list is loaded, it’s one of the few trophies whose states read 100%

Makes me think of Resident Evil Remaster. You get an achievement called 'Get Used to It" just for dying for the first time. Though, I managed to play three times in a row without getting that achievement.

The Yakuza series is quite literally known to grant you an achievement for starting a majority of their games (or getting past the initial 20-minutes of cutscenes to move your character for the first time). Most predominant in Yakuza 0, Kiwami (1), 5, and 6.

fitting with ellen's loophole! stance, dark souls 2 has a achievement for dying for the first time...in a souls game and since the likelihood is that you'll earn that wonderful achievement before you even manage to get out of the tutorial area you technically haven't started the proper game yet.

There's a game on PS4 called Everyone's Gone to the Rapture. Basically every trophy in that game could be in this list. You get one trophy for walking backwards for 30 seconds. You get another one by walking back and forth through a doorway. Yet another for watching a train set for a minute. I would 100% believe that a good number of people got the platinum trophy in less than a day.

"Outer Worlds" has one I think it's called Welcome to Halcyon, you get it for creating a character and watching the intro sequence. 98.7% of players have it, which means 13 players out of 1,000 saw part of the intro and said screw this 😆. "Minecraft" has one called Taking Inventory, which you get for pressing the inventory button, which it tells you to do, after telling you which button is the inventory button.

final fantasy 8 gives achievements for each of the GFs. however the first two you get automatically by either sitting down at the computer you start the game standing at (not counting the bit that you can walk along a corridor), or if you skip that, by leaving the starting area which is meant to be the very first thing you do in the game. so unlike all the examples given, ff8 actually gives two achievements within the first 30 seconds of playing the game, which can be well before your first battle
