Nonono. Please don't. You've already Unraveled their bosses as real bosses and if I have to hear Pat say Dark Souls one more time I'm going to explode.
Hey bro, whatcha drinking? Cool. Reminds me of Kingsfield. Oh - you know the first-person predecessor to the Souls games for the PSX? Give me your email address so I can send you some emulator files and a BIOS to get you star-
He holds an immense amount of power within him. Yet, he uses this power to get mad about getting mad about getting mad about the misapplication of the dark souls descriptor.
@@davidkeatts2480 you'll have to live on the northeast section of Morioh and not be married. Be sure to be in bed by 11 PM. You need at least those 8 hours of sleep. Before going to bed be sure to drink a glass of warm milk and do about 20 minutes of stretches. You'll sleep like a baby
I am totally down for the reversal of style and dry delivery of a possible pat unraveled equivalent. He has a much different energy, but it plays well with the almost ted talk level of straight-facedness shown in this video. Get on it polygon.
at 12:58 the text that flashes is "You see, in Souls games you often traverse "fog gates" or "fog walls" to enter boss encounters. In addition to being an atmospheric and stylistic choice, it segments the gameplay areas so that"... for anyone who really struggled to pause on that microsecond, and gave up like I almost did.
I played Dark Souls totally blind and hadn't played Demon Souls. I didn't see the steps up to undead burg, and thought my ONLY options were skeleton loaded graveyard or into New Londo... Boy did I feel like a silly goose after noticing the right way after hours of grinding hollows on path to new londo.
Tori Barnes ah that makes sense. In the overboard videos or even in her collars she seems more chaotic than lawful to me but her explains videos definitely give off a lawful vibe so I see where you’re coming from
I just got into the series with the first game. At first I was upset that a naked man (the last class) has the most average stats, then they burnt him making him uglier, then I die by a dragon that I thought I was supposed to kill with my mostly broken sword. I said “this game is bullshit” and turned it off. *A month later* I watched a walkthrough and made it to next town. It’s surprising how just doing that even with help feels pretty rewarding.
14:30 flawless execution of the Reverse Riker chair mount. the dismount wasnt technically a legal move but i'll allow it since this isnt an official chair sitting event
"Dark Souls can be a big nude man who invades your game and stabs you in the butt, or Dark Souls can be a big nude man who invades your game and helps you kill God."
Towards the end of my active time in DS3, I made it a point to be a hot nude woman who did nothing but lay down summon signs for Midir, to show them how they were fighting him completely wrong. If naked dragon removal woman can beat Midir without damage, so can you.
"... I was the one who was wrong." Perfectly encapsulates the moment Souls "clicks" in your brain. I returned Dark Souls the first time I bought it, thinking the game sucked. I was a fool.
I would just put all my points in health and stay in 1 area fighting low level enemies until I felt like a bad ass. Then I would promptly get my ass kicked by the next big baddie. Over and over but I loved it.
John Sutton I did the same thing!! The punk at GameStop made fun of me when I complained the game gets harder as you fail. I came back a week later and bought it for the 2nd time. I am now thankful for GameStop punk and Dark Souls.
My experience with DARKSOULS was similar. Got the whole series for PC 1 2 3 at the time. And played 1 for a month slamming my head against the wall. Tried 2 for a week promptly quit. Came back into ds 2 finished it. Now I love the series I need to play ds 1 and demon souls to be a complete nut now.
Well, technically he begins researching and writing before Pat's published this video, so in an obscure sense of timing, I think he's good. ... But link this to him anyway.
As someone who was in twitch chat when we all watched pat take his first baby steps into the donkey souls world, this feels like watching my child's graduation ceremony
While I appreciate the warm, fuzzy sentiment, that's not how neurotransmitters work, and I'd appreciate you not using that word in that way. We don't really know why antidepressants work (and also why they often don't work, or only barely work) but pharma keeps churning out variations of the same antidepressants, which means that we'll never get better, more effective drugs. And they can get away with this because the public believes that "depression is a chemical imbalance" and "serotonin is a happy molecule", even though there is no science behind these claims. So I'm glad Gill makes you happy, but please reconsider how you describe that happiness.
@@mia-qt7zz calling it a "chemical reaction" is a radical oversimplification, but at least your aren't attributing it to a specific molecule so I'll take it over nothing.
I love the moment he says "This is absurd! It would be like referring to every non-linear gear-gated platformer as a "metroidvania". And he then turns around like "Wait a second..."
I've come back to this video multiple times. Not only is it pretty good, with some understated humor, and wonderful delivery and camera work, but there's... something.. This video has a very commanding aura. It fills the room, fills my computer monitor, and fills the dead space between my ears. I enjoy it.
"If I can solo Lord Gwynn, I can get through this" was a common mantra of mine in the Dark Souls of decades and will continue to be in the coming decade
Same here. But somehow becoming an adult is still too hard. I finally solo’d my taxes without summoning in Jackson-Hewitt though. Also, I heard that finally facing the dark center of the alcoholic trauma victim that is a reflection of your fathers childhood neglect made manifest will be nerfed in the next patch! Goals!
"Much like a teenage me wearing flame-patterned Chuck Taylors a decade after the collapse of Third-Wave Ska, the Souls Franchise refused to do anything that could be considered appropriate for the era in which it lived." How dare you spy on me.
Someone needs to make a gif of Pat walking backwards and sitting on that chair, and also getting up and rolling away. e.g. "when you overhear someone talking about Dark Souls" insert gif.
I'm curious how many takes it took to perform all those fancy physical transitions from one camera to the next? The Dark Souls of transitioning. Good job.
"hey pat how many times do you want to walk off screen to a different chair" ... " *YES* " so i counted the number of times he enters into, then leaves a specific fram, 5, every three minutes, the cinematography in polygon is really interesting to analyze, BDG has a completely different feel to his vids but still makes it an art
In a tone similar to a Todd Howard quote "I'll stop talking about it when people stop playing it". I really have an urge to play dark souls now, thank you.
7:16 is the best selling point I've ever seen for a Souls-type game. If you're going to get murdered by the same thing 20 times, make it something spectacular like a giant snake projectile!
Minimalist narrative replaced with furtive lore that may or may not fit in with previous installments? Where the second one is easily the worst because they put zero effort into it but still expect it to be taken seriously? Where you have to over-read into everything to try and REALLY force your headcanon into existence in order for the narrative to flow correctly? I thought you said the new Star Wars movies WEREN'T Dark Souls?
Unpopular opinion here but I really wasn't a fan of the souls style bosses in Fallen Order. The game is clearly geared towards a narrative experience, so having to take time to learn the patterns and weaknesses of the enemy to overcome them, while rewarding, just threw off the pacing for me and took me out of the story. Love the Souls games and most story driven games but I found it oddly jarring.
I keep coming back to this video... It's really well made and Pat's measured and calm delivery makes for some great comedy. This and the 'bloodborne is muppets' one are some of my favourite Polygon videos. Thanks for your hard work people!
The only similarities between souls and kings field are moonlight gs , dark color palette and difficulty. Severance sword of darkness was more souls like
This was a fantastic video, great job putting this together! I laughed many times and appreciated the work you put into this. This is your best work since "That 70's Show".
I've noticed that a lot of Pat's videos have some kind of arrangement of "Dvorak - Symphony no. 9 - Allegro con fuoco"... and I love it keep them coming.
I treasure this video so much still that it will be vaguely alluded to in extremely esoteric flavor text when I am slain in the fantasy apocalypse and someone loots my corpse.
"Dark Souls, on the other hand teaches players to survive the same way my father taught me how to mow the lawn, that is, by looking at me and saying "Patrick. Go mow the lawn" Literally lost my shit there lmfao
This was incredible. From the writing to the way he just randomly transitions to different backgrounds for different topics. It was witty and cracked me up. Thank you for making this :).
