The second one, where you step back is called a 'leg void' in fencing. Often people get hit anyways, because they don't move the whole leg - either: The foot moves back, bending at the knee, or The hips move back without lifting the foot properly. Alas, good footwork is hard.

As a former TKD practicioner who has his legs and feet in pretty bad shape and now doing some KB to get back in shape and learn new stuff, nice tips, the lead leg front kick is usually the simplest yet most effective one , i sometimes use just out of muscle memory, another one is doing a long step back with the leg that is being targeted then throwing a lead front kick with the leg that is now ahead, i do that because sometimes you're not fast enough with thefront kick and your lead leg knee collides with your partner leg or knee and that hurts, lol. nice video as usual.

I'm a big believer in using kicks to counter leg kicks, it just seems like the obvious answer. But the karate motion is super interesting. Would love to see you do a focused series on decrypting some of those esoteric "TMA" drills. My boxing coach is a fan of the horse stance punching just as a way to drill the mechanics of turning punches over, never thought about the pulling motion being related to actually drawing the opponent in. Especially in a more traditional setting with a gi and especially belt that seems super strong. Now that i think about it, that kind of low grip on the belt sounds super dominant. I'm pretty sure it wasn't allowed when I trained judo because of the stalling potential. I wonder if Kyokushin rules allow pulling in with the belt?

There are a few interesting kicks you can do to counter kicks. In Hapkido, there a move where as your opponent throws a high roundhouse, you do a spinning hook kick and wrap your leg around the knee of the roundhouse. Usually that leads to your opponent on one knee and you doing a calf crutch.
@pedroguerrero3862
@pedroguerrero3862 3 года назад
@Andrew Onymous the move is mostly use in demos but there is a variation that can be used although you need good timing. Instead of using the kick to wrap your opponent knee, you instead go a spinning hook kick the same time as he does a high roundhouse. The thing is that you have to do the hook kick the sound time as he does a high roundhouse.

If you’re fighting a new southpaw fighter, throw head kicks at him with your right leg until he stops bothering you. If you are the new southpaw fighter, an orthodox fighter is going to attack your lead leg in very different ways at different angles than the basic outside leg kick from a closed stance shown in this video. However, if they stand directly in front of you while throwing a right inside leg kick at your lead leg, fire your left straight at his chin, not unlike what you see with the right hand at 2:09

Thanks for sharing this. The karate part makes much sense. Pretty cool to know. In Savate, we often use most of those moves, as we can't check kicks (don't know why). So the push kick, the dodging (though we keep the stance at all time to keep balance), the counter punch - by moving inward or laterally, kick the supporting leg and deflecting the kick (as holding is also not allowed, *shrug*) is often used to avoid a direct kick.

I learned that the heel kick we used in kung-fu can be used a low kick block. I prefer to ride the leg kick similar to the butt block, but I twist my lead leg and come up on the ball of my foot so the kick rides up a few inches higher on my leg than the kicker expected and it lands in my hand.
@fabio1160
@fabio1160 3 года назад
Hello Ramsay. This was illuminating! Since we are talking leg kicks, can I ask you something about them, that does not relate strictly to defending? What is the difference between low-kicks muay thai style, with the leg more or less straight, and other low kicks with the "snapping" motion of a round kick (bending / chambering your knee). I suppose they are two different tools for different jobs, but I can't quite figure out the relative advantages of each.

If it's a higher leg kick like a thigh kick and you catch it, there's another option. It works best at range so move back a bit then catch the foot or ankle. Then twist to make them fall or risk knee damage if they try to stay up. Maybe you can crane hand block out and possibly get an undergrip on the leg. Squat a bit then stack the leg up like you would do in mount. Many leg sweep takedowns from there.

Hey couch, so did i tae kwon do for about 12 years but recently got into MMA (before the end of the world) and on my first day my couch saw that i was standing in a bladed stance. He corrected me saying that if i stand bladed i would just eat leg kicks and i have also notice my boxing and clinchting doesn't work as well either in a bladed stance. So i stood more in a muay thai stance so that i could learn that style of fighting rather than just my own. However i am finding it hard to be able to move quickly and i generally find it more comfortable fighting bladed. Should i just carry on fighting square to my partner and get more use to it or is there away to make the bladed stance more effective for MMA?
@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey 3 года назад
Stances change constantly and dynamically throughout an MMA fight as the situation changes. A side stance (or a bladed stance) has very specific uses (eg: side kicks, back kicks, philly shell) You won’t always be using those techniques. There’s no reason to lock up into a single position like that. You will always feel more comfortable doing what you are used to. But unless what you are used to is winning MMA fights, then you need to get comfortable being uncomfortable.

Can turn this into a takedown. 6. Sidestep away and catch the leg. Change your angle about 90 degrees. From here you can sweep. 7. Catch, pull their foot into your hip and strike with your other hand as you do so. 8. Shift angle and do an inside leg kick with the leg they were aiming at.

I'd add the knee block that we use in Ashihara Karate: it's not so much a check so much as a nudge, using the outer edge of the lower leg in a gouging action to the incoming thigh. Throwing your weight into it allows you to both push the opponent's leg away and get in close for a grapple/uppercut/elbow. Alternatively, dig the bladed upper edge of your shin into the incoming thigh for a numbing effect.
@RamseyDewey

@@RamseyDewey yup, it’s meant for close ranges, and we often link it into our grapples because of that. I’ve done it “incorrectly” at a longer range many times while learning, and it essentially ends up as a typical MMA shin-check. the so-called “correct” knee block is to protect our bones from crushing each other 😅
@clockmakerbr2470
@clockmakerbr2470 3 года назад
The push kick can be aimed to the thigh of the leg that your opponent is using to kick you, but it's a technique that just happens in the moment, it's not like a shin check that you can do all day long. You can do this if you already have raised your shin to check, but your opponend delayed his kick.

@@danielpustovoyt9726 yeah you hold the leg and step through and elbow down hard on the thigh, then let go with your other hand and spin coming at a more vertical angle to poke through the guard in case they block

Re-examining the push kick to stop the leg kick, would a side kick be as effective?

I’d say not to recommend the butt check for beginners/inexperienced fighters because if you position yourself just right which isn’t hard to do by mistake, you gonna get kicked in the bone and I know two people who got paralysed because of that butt kick. But it is really cool and first time I’ve seen it in one of Bruce lees movies, great content!

The explanation of the reverse hand pulling isn't part of Taekwon-Do, but now I wish it was. Textbook explanation is simply to provide an Newtonian reaction to the punch going forward (not sure if it achieves that, but that's the official explanation from Choi's Encyclopedia).

All the movement from taekwondo forms were borrowed from shotokan karate and then rearranged into the shapes of the tangrams on the Korean flag. Practical application of the movements was not the highest priority going in.

A question: do you prefer quick combinations, with some of those hits just to distract, or single devastating kicks, punches, or elbows? I guess that it depends the situation and one has to adapt and use both styles, but I don't know, maybe with combinations, a strike is less powerful? I am asking from my ignorance.

Depends on your situation. A match, sparring, whatever: quick combos Streets: heavy blow My opinion, you do you ^^

Can you do a video about the MMA stance? I think this will be the start for everyone that wants to learn how to fight. I think it is easily overlooked and after you practice some striking you realize that from that position you can't kick properly or you can't attempt to take down. Thanks
@RamseyDewey

There’s no one “MMA stance”. A fighters stance should be as dynamic and changing as the requirements of the fight. That being said, I’ll put it on my list to make a video about how that works in real life.

@@RamseyDewey what I mean by an MMA stance is a position that is good for defense and attack, and by an attack, I mean punching, striking, and takedown attempts. It must be something special I think because if you practice boxing you stay in a way that takes care only about punching, muay thai must be better but the perfect one must take into consideration every kind of attack possible.

hey sir ramsey that low kick defense using the butt by lowering the body, is it possible to step the lead leg first, then lower the body, then using the lead hand for a stiff jab(probably twisting the shoulder to protect the chin) instead of takedowns?..

I remember the first time I heard about calf kicks. I thought they were completely useless, since I could just turn my foot out 45 degrees in order to make my opponent's kick hit my shin. Didn't realize how devastating it actually was until I saw Gaethje chopping wood

Be careful if using same-side-leg to defend, it can be very hurt for both. If he kicks with his right leg, use your left leg to defend is safer and more friendly. If you use your right leg to defend his very hard right-leg-kick, both legs can be broken or very hurt
