Have the people of the internet convinced you that double leg takedowns are bad for your knees? Has a well-intentioned, but poorly informed martial arts instructor taught you to give yourself bursitis by slamming your knees into the ground while attempting a double leg take down? Let’s fix that nonsense and learn son wrestling fundamentals that carry over to MMA, BJJ, CACC, nogi submission grappling, and sanda.
Shanghai based MMA Coach and Kunlun Fight Combat League ringside commentator Ramsey Dewey answers questions from the viewers.

There is a difference in a double leg for wrestling vs. MMA. Wrestling stances are so low that you do need to do the knee drop but for MMA you do not since the stances are higher. Even dealing with Judo folks the shot can be higher since they stand higher than wrestlers. Your examples in the video are correct for MMA but for pure wrestling they would not work, you would get hip checked, cross faced and sprawed into the floor.

There are MANY ways to set up and finish double leg takedowns for wrestling- many of which don’t require a shot from distance at all. Did you know you set up a double leg from an over under clinch? For example. If you’re worried about getting sprawled on, there’s a move for you.
@SwordFighterPKN
@SwordFighterPKN 3 года назад
@@RamseyDewey yes I wrestled for years I know that shot that you are describing from a short distance, I like other choices when that close. I never did double legs though I learned how to stop them and rarely got taken down by them. Look I'm not saying your wrong Im just saying why that deep shot with the knee drop exists and it's specific to folk style and free style outside of that dropping knee deep shot is not needed. As I responded to you in another post the knee hitting the floor a habit you pickup when you are younger and after 1000's of shots is hard to unlearn.

Hmmmmm.....back when I was actively taking BJJ we were taught the "knee to the ground" shot walks. I had a GREAT BJJ instructor, but I never felt comfortable doing that so I would do my shots the way you have explained. I always felt uncomfortable doing that, since I thought I was doing it wrong, and as a result I rarely used double leg takedowns, preferring instead reaps and sometimes firemen's carries. Thank you for letting me know I wasn't just being a knee wimp.

Totally agree, if the opponent lowers his stance while the take down attempt, which we usually do, we have to go lower means putting the knee on the floor. But if the opponents caugh by surprise like after some punches then down he goes, it can totally work without knee on the ground.

People screw up their knees because they drop their knee without level changing. Before you drop to your knee,you need to level change, so the distance between you and the ground is minimal Then, you need to hit your opponent a few milliseconds before your knee touches the ground,so that your opponent takes the impact General advice for people reading the comments

Ramsey, I love that you're talking about wrestling. I also love how you're emphasizing that you don't have to penetrate all the way to the knee. The reason why wrestlers penetrate to the knee is because our stances (excluding greco-roman wrestling) are always significantly lower than any combat sport be it other grappling disciplines or striking disciplines. Wrestlers must penetrate to the knee because our opponents are going to be as low as us; however in bjj or mma this is not the case. Therefore, you're right that a simple level change is adequate--even superior--than penetrating all the way to the knee. By penetrating all the way to the knee you're getting much lower than you have to, and therefore there's much more wasted movement and by extension wasted energy. However, there's a few things that I feel obligated to point out. I understand that you're an accomplished fighter, and its not my intention to belittle you, but there are a few things that you do that simply won't work against someone that actually knows how to counter a double leg beyond a guillotine. Also keep in mind, I'm not well versed in MMA, so it might be the case that my perspective is skewed too much toward pure grappling. First, you are shooting to the back leg every single time in this video. You even go to make the point that its opposite from boxers. This is just not true. Watch Jordan Burrough's double leg, he almost never *deliberately* penetrates to the back leg. You penetrate to the leading leg. This is true whether it is a double or a single, but its simply too much distance to close if you're actually shooting to the back leg. If the lead leg mirrors your own, then you either have to change your stance, circle the opposite way and make them step their back leg front, or you shoot an outside single. Shooting to the back leg gives the opponent much more time to sprawl. Additionally, it gives them the ability to wizzar (because you're coming in at an angle), and then you will end up with your knee on the ground with your posture broken. I can't speak to your mma experience, but you would be absolutely crushed by a college wrestler this way. Second, the trip is not a legitimate finish to a double leg. Any situation that the trip will work is a situation where the far knee chop or the lift will work and will be more effective giving you greater position later. One of the major reasons why the trip won't work is simply because anyone who knows how to counter a double leg is going to thrust their hips into you to stop your shot. This will naturally put their feet back further than you can trip them. If they don't do this, then sure it will work, but so will every other finish because they've allowed you to penetrate so deeply. I understand that most people even in grappling won't have this ability to defend a double leg like I'm talking about. This will be true in both mma and submission grappling, but my point is why even bother with a technique that can be countered so easily by an opponent who does know what they're doing? Why not just finish properly with your far knee chop that you show? There are no down sides to the far knee chop and its by far the most solid of all double leg finishes. The last point I have to make is a little bit of a nitpick, but there's no reason to expend the effort in lifting the leg that you're not chopping. The only reason why you want to control that leg is because you're trying to prevent the opponent from gaining space to counter your shot. I wouldn't say that its bad technique to lift the leg, but I would say that you're making the technique harder than it needs to be. Wrestling is already very physically demanding. I don't think there's a reason to make it even more so by adding extra movement. I mean no offense by any of my critiques, and I think that you're stressing the right point. The penetration step is not about going to the knee, its about being able to close the distance between you and your opponents legs while being lower than them. If your opponent is standing erect, like they do in mma fights or bjj matches, then there is usually very little reason for your penetration step to be so incredibly low to the mat.

@ferdonandebull

Any technique that requires a change in the direction of force is hard on you and introduces a chance for blocking. Legs are meant to be swept with force exerted on the torso. Going forward then lifting is a waste of momentum. Going forward and trapping the legs and using the same force to control the upper body is kind of a sweep. Or at least “sweepish” This to me was a great demonstration. The mechanics of force was very well explained and the demonstration

no wonder many UFC fighters get the headchoke on a double leg takedown also nice counter to a sleeper hold. Looking up instead of looking down does a lot indeed because like said in the video your momentum is up and you're posturing up even if you get choke you can slam the opponent on the ground and loses his grip. Again another great martial arts video from Ramsey.
@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey 3 года назад
If you’re getting caught in a guillotine off a double leg attempt, your double leg technique is wrong. You don’t even have to slam anyone. If they hold onto a front headlock once you hit the ground, a correct double leg pits you in side control. They can’t choke you from there, but you CAN choke them with a von flue choke.

A lot of BJJ academies are absolutely incompetent at teaching takedowns. Duck walks are fine. Level changes where knees make contact with the ground are fine. “Dropping your knee” is a terrible cue to explain those things.
@littlerunningwolf
@littlerunningwolf 3 года назад
If you drop your level first, the impact on your knee is minimal, because you are moving straight forward. Most people fall down to their knee, which is a terrible level change. Olympic wrestlers drop really low before they shoot, so that there is barely any impact on the knee. The power for the shot, the power for the lift...it all comes from the legs. If your torso remains upright, and you drop your level all the way to the floor, you have already gotten beneath his center of gravity, an then you can use your legs to project your power upward

I think many could be helpful but can only really speak to my own experience with Heibei Xingyi. I've two herniated disks and torn up knees from a motorcycle accident. After physical therapy, I tried for about a decade to get back into martial arts (primarily judo), but couldn't maintain any sort of consistent training due to those persistent injuries. Out of boredom, I started doing Xingyi forms again. After about a year of that my knees were vastly improved, and my hip and back mobility were nearly as good as before the accident. I took a bit of judo and bjj, and both my structure and my ability to shoot were far better than they had been. All anecdotal, of course. I won't claim any sort of "traditional" training to be superior to modern methods, but it worked better for me. Lots of time spent in a low stance, focusing on weight transfer, opening up the hips, keeping the spine aligned, tailbone tucked, chin tucked, all of it seemed to click within a grappling setting. The Snake form is a good example. Sort of a low Philly shell into an underhook while the rear leg shoots forward. (Maybe "form" would have been better than "stance""

Ramsey, legit question about wrestling. How well conditioned to you need to be to control your opponent's fall so they don't get hurt by the technique you want to perform? A fair example would be a german suplex. How strong do you have to be to avoid breaking your neck with it?
@insidetrip101
@insidetrip101 3 года назад
You don't actually land on your head/neck with a suplex--either if you're the thrower or the one being thrown, either if it is belly to belly or belly to back. If you're the thrower, then your opponent is going to take the fall. If you're the thrown then you're going to tuck your head and curl your chest so that you land on your shoulders/back. Also, suplexes are cool, but they're useless for fighting against someone who knows how to fall. I suppose on a hard surface it wouldn't be fun to be suplexed and that could end the fight, but on any surface that is softer than hardwood floor its not going to do much.

You are undoubtedly a more competent wrestler than I am. That said when I was doing freestyle regularly you were kind of bent at the hip to start with. Like the basic engaging posture looked was like each guy is basically kind of leaning over at 90 degrees. The point was you're keeping your hips and legs back and you want to arm drag a dude to, best case scenario, get under him but obviously there were other things that could happen. But to get lower you were kind of dropping the knee to get there. Out training mats were more forgiving than a ring. I could have slept on those things if we didn't have to kick them together so often. The coaches had that wrestler waddle though
@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey Год назад
For sure. In freestyle wrestling, when the posture is already that low, your level cha ges need to be even lower. That’s where driving the knee forward comes into play. But man, you would be shocked how many BJJ students drop to their knees (not even a penetration step) against guys standing completely upright, and ruin their own shots.
@mizukarate

I used to have drop to the knee in High School Wrestling for a single or a double leg. I think it works for safety in that sport. We practiced duck walks alot. However I did pull a double leg dropping to the knee in a street fight. It worked well there too. However long term practice especially in MMA may not be a good idea....some things in Wrestling may not carry over well to MMA.

Hey Ramsey! What do you think about the hook kick (without the spin)? I learned it in shotokan karate years ago, went to kickboxing/mma later and have seen nobody using it. I know you've answered questions about taekwondo an stuff in mma before, but I've see other techniques (side kick, turning back kick, spinning hook kick, even the crane kick) ocassionaly work - in either the gym or in Glory or UFC matches. But besides Wonderboy I don't think I've seen anyone succesfully use the regular hook kick. Am I looking at the wrong matches, is it under valued or just a crappy technique for real fighting? Thanks :)
@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey 3 года назад
A standing hook kick is a very specialized attack that most people don’t train to use at all. I like it, I use it with varying degrees of success. But it takes a high degree of control over the hip flexors that most people never experience let alone know how to train for. It’s a difficult technique for most people, not a useless one. There’s an important difference.

@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey 3 года назад
Yep. A shocking number of people lack the flexibility and strength to shoot their shoulder to the other guy’s hip with unbroken posture while on their feet and often end up shooting their shoulder to the mid section instead and mucking everything up. The duck walk ensures you get to the shoulder to hip level.

Don't get me wrong, his wrestling is better than 90% of mma fighters out there, but I really don't think the guy could compete on even a DII/DIII NCAA level, and he would have no chance against a DI all-american when it comes to wrestling takedowns. Would he beat these guys in a submission grappling ruleset? Probably. I can believe the claim that he's a better grappler, but that's not the claim that is made when people talk about khabib. As others have said the habit of dropping the knee to the floor on a penetration step was a reaction in wrestling to a low defensive posture ... especially if your opponent was a lot shorter than you are. At 6'3" and 152 pounds in High School I often had to drop that knee to get in. That said, it wasn't preferred and absolutely unnecessary in BJJ because JUDO and unnecessary in MMA because STRIKES. Yes, ideally you could get your opponent to provide an entry that didn't require the knee drop with a good setup and timing, but sometimes you just forced it through. In my opinion Wrestling is much more weighted to initiative and sheer effort than BJJ.
@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey 3 года назад
I understand that, but I’m going to be a stickler for terminology here. If your knee touches the floor on a double leg, there should be no “dropping” onto your knees. A penetration step is forward momentum, not downward momentum. Your shoulder should make contact with the other guy’s hip and your leg should penetrate his stance BEFORE your knee touches the floor. That’s not possible if you drop your weight onto your knee.
@SwordFighterPKN
@SwordFighterPKN 3 года назад
@@RamseyDewey - You have a point but when most of us learn a double leg we young and much lighter so dropping to your knee vs. making contact before the knee touches is one of those details you just don't get. After you do thousands of those type of shots its kind of hard to unlearn. Now with that said when I have taught those that have not wrestled to do a double leg I explain as you have here that you should make contact with the hip first before the knee ever touches. The context of adults learning this vs being kid is very different.
@jasonmurray8777
@jasonmurray8777 3 года назад
@@RamseyDewey I don't disagree with your assessment that the purpose of a penetration step is to penetrate to the point where you have connection to the other guys hips. That puts you a great position to easily use momentum along with your legs and core for lifting finishes - or cutting the corner - or following through with that trail leg to entangle your opponent for the trip version. That said, I should clarify that I was referring to the drop of only one knee - not two. Trying to enter by dropping both knees is a surefire way to get your shot stuffed since you have no momentum and moreover very limited mobility from your knees. However, if you took a good shot and ended up on two knees I was also taught to turn that failed double leg into an Iranian (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_QWHLQIguac.html) . It worked if pretty well as plan B if you did a good job on penetration, but had failed enough that both knees were on the ground. The Iranian was usually pointless too if you ended up on both knees without any penetration and your arms all stretched out under your sprawled opponent, but your coach would still be yelling at you to duck walk your butt off and try to finish it anyway.
