Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

Charles Dickens was famous for publicity of his books . He did tours reading extracts to audience. He always ended the reading on a cliff hanger . Audience then wanted to know what happened next . So they ran out to the foyer and buy his book . 100 years later I still think that is genius and fantastic.

For fiction authors, write because you love telling stories and have a normal day job.

Her book was shown in the thumbnail and it is clearly a "how to" book on writing memoirs. And really, what amazing act were you going to accomplish in your "wasted" eight minutes? Give me a break.

Talking about pre-sales and first week/first month sales and how Amazon is different was worth the time of any fiction writer, even if it was only a reminder. She also talked about the mindset of promoting a book. You might one day write a non-fiction book, or assist another writer who is writing one. Whining in the comments probably wasn't a good use of your time, though. And neither has it been a worthwhile use of my time to point out the obvious to you. But if it stops you whining in comments sections, maybe it was.

I think most points are also valid for fiction. My tipps for online marketing for books 1) get people (of the genre you write in) intrested at least 6 month before publishing and talk about the book or the topic regularly 2) give the book as much as possible for reviews. It is an marketing investment that pays off - and the more reviews the better 3) podcasts! as she said, people are invested and actual listen actively. 4) if you can make a small fun quiz about your book and then link the result in a meaningful way to your book - that's great too. Not to do: paid advertizing for books is a waste of money! Otherwise in real life: organize readings with other authors, like a gathering or party, and invite people, maybe even sell cheap tickets. when people have fun they remember you in a nice way and buy your next book (like McDonalds children birthday parties :-))

@@Ruylopez778 That's universal knowledge. It's no secret how Amazon's algorithms work (which is irrelevant to a traditionally published author--seeing as the contract is between the publishing house and Amazon), neither is it unknown that author platforms affect presales, which impact book release expectations and ultimately the amount of risk a traditional publisher will take (no platform/unknown author= tiny upfront advance, very little marketing budget, smaller window of success).

This only seems to apply to nonfiction authors--seeing as Ms David refers to a book as a person's calling card to represent their expertise on a specific topic. That doesn't apply to fiction authors where book sales actually *do* matter.

My cousin was Toni Morrison and people sought her out for her blurbs on their books all the time. Ms. David, with all due respect, is certainly not in her league, so her comments that blurbs on a book are not important is simply not true. Status is still a very important element in the arts and entertainment community. If you're into literature, a blurb from a famous author is definitely a big deal to the person buying the book. To be honest, I've never heard of this author before this interview. entertainment community
@chrisa3961
@chrisa3961 Год назад
I really like e.g. Stephen King. But I wouldnt buy a book because he said he liked it. or anybody. People buy books because they love the genre, the author or because it seems popular. Not because somebody blurbs the book. The actual blurb might be more important than the testimonial.
@mel3687
@mel3687 Год назад
@@chrisa3961 Agreed. That's why places like Goodreads and Amazon reviews are important. People put more weight in reviews than they would a silly blurb. Besides, readers know that authors support each other so authors will kindly promote another author's work despite its quality.

Maybe I'm an exception, but I have given books a lot more credence because of names I saw in the blurbs. And I do really hope I can get one or two of the most prominent people in my subject area to write a blurb for my book. I feel like they can lend a book a lot of legitimacy right up front.

Tiktok and RU-vid promotion for YA, especially reviews by Booktokers and Booktubers. They can be really influencial in sales when it comes to book. Think Sarah J Mass and Colleen Hoover. And try to pitch your book to streaming services. If you have a teen romance or YA fantasy, placing your first draft in places like Wattpad can be really good to get attention. Also they have their own studios.
