I work in a hotel and I was once asked what the capital of Prague was 🙈 another guy apologized to me for not speaking Polish and yeah, communist Czechoslovakia is obviously still a thing in the west.

I am surprised how many people travel to some country and can't even use google to find some facts about that country. When I am traveling, I know even timetables of all public transportation in that city before I arrive. :-D BTW another thing is - snow in Prague is really rare, don't expect white winter in Prague, it happens only once in few years and it mostly melts next day, this winter was special.
@davidz2808

@@letecmig People mostly don't really know what is climate or wather in such far destinations, they expect it's like in Europe - 4 seasons etc....they should do more research when they travel out from Europe. I visited Prague back in 1998 and must admit was was a bit apprehensive about driving there and being able to communicate with people🤔. But I found a fantastic city, people and culture and in hopefully next year will return to show my wife what a wonderful city it is🇬🇧 🇨🇿👍

Prague reminds me of Paris and Rome, a very beautiful city. We met two young ladies in Switzerland who told us to make sure we ate a “Roasty” in Switzerland and purchase a Garnett Stone ring in Prague. Excellent suggestion, the “Roasty” was a culinary delight and the ring was a sacred treasure that we will always value. Far and above our best European purchase to be passed down to future generations. I remember siting with a couple in a Paris restaurant who were traveling on to Prague back in 2003. It seemed so mysterious, almost dangerous at the time. Now thanks to great guidebooks and a strong internet travel to Central Europe is safe and secure, a walk in the park.

Geographically we are Central Europe, mentally it's still 50/50 between West and East. Also it's kind of ironic, we were unquestionably part of Western Europe for more than 1000 years, then the unfathomable disaster happened and we fell behind the iron curtain from the wrong side for 40 years so everyone considers us Eastern Europe now.

In a purely geographical sense Czech Republic is central European, but since many of it's "cousins"/other Slavic countries are eastern European, culturally the Czechs has more in common with them than central and western Europeans.
@dittikke
@dittikke 3 года назад
The Eastern Bloc is dead and gone, really it is. Wikipedia* tries to define Central Europe as a political and geographic entity, the concept is vague and ill-defined and comes from before communism, but it definitely includes Czech Republic (in the centre of Central Europe!), Austria and also mostly Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary. The problem is everything is a smoosh here and we're all living in each other's backyards as the 2nd wave of the pandemic showed so any definition of Central Europe on its outer edges is going to be blurry, but placing Czech Republic anywhere other than in Central Europe is politically, historically and geographically illiterate. *Yes I know Wikipedia is not a reputable source but it's better than someone's opinion on the social media, so. Greetings from East Germany :)

@pavel6688 3 года назад
@@pragueexpat5106 That's hard to measure. There are simmilar in language, but the culture is often very different. With the christian orthodox Slavs, Czechs have really very little in common. Slovaks and Poles are more close, but still there are differences. On the other hand you can find many cultural simmilarities with Austrians/Bavarians/Saxons as well (the Central-European "beer region"), based on many centuries of common historical heritage. So the term "Central Europe" is totally correct.
@doin_fine
@doin_fine 3 года назад
I think the confusion about your country being in Eastern Europe stems from the fact that you are Slavs. Those in the Anglosphere view all Slavs as being very similar. So the Baltics, anything east of Germany or slightly Slavic is Eastern Europe. It's a racial thing.

We think it's because Czechoslovakia used to be a communist country. The perception of Czechoslovakia before WW2 was different. Some people might think the same as you but from our experience, when we ask people on our tours about what language is Czech close to, lot of them guess German. Mumbai has population 13,000,000 on the other hand whole czech republic has 10,500,000 and yet GDP is still slightly bigger in Czechia. But if you want find out who is richer you have to compare GDP per capacita. In India it is only 2,191$ while in Czech Republic is 10x higher 24,569$. So that all means that average czech citizen is 10x more richer than avetsge indian citizen.
