How To Grow On Twitch?
If you want to grow your Twitch stream, it is important to be critical. Being critical isn’t a bad thing, people say, “Oh don’t be so critical of yourself!”.
But there are a lot of things you can control and improve, such as your visuals, audio, and most importantly your content that you’re creating. Watch back your VoD and be honest with yourself, is it up to scratch. Does your mic sound good? Are you engaging? Is it easy to watch and enjoy or is there something that is off-putting? Be honest, push yourself to grow, and become a better entertainer!
Because at the end of the day, the only way you are going to grow your stream is by growing yourself and being critical in a positive way.

What Bitrate And Settings Should I Use For Streaming?
The easiest way to understand bitrate is by calling what it actually is, your upload speed to the Twitch servers.
Now you’ll need a higher bitrate depending on how high quality you want your stream to be, this means 1080p 60 frames per second will need a bitrate of 6000, which roughly equals 6megabits upload speed on your end being taken up
By lowering your resolution and framerate, you can make it a lot easier to stream, for example, if you set your base canvas size to 1920x1080, but change your output to 1280x720 otherwise known as 720p you drop down to only needing a bitrate of 4500 or 4.5megabits.
If you still want 1080, you can even just lower your framerate from 60fps to 30fps and then adjust to 4500bitrate.

Number one mistake that personally puts me off is not finishing games. I don't mind if the streamer says "Yeah, not a game for me, won't play it again" and plays something else. But when each stream in a week is a different game, and they promise they will finish those games "sometime in the future" I gradually lose interest and in the end stop caring and go somewhere else.

One of the mistakes I've dealt with is a mental one. When you're constantly worried that you as a person are boring and no one wants to watch you. Your mentality and believed reality will affect the quality of your stream. Especially if you're new, you're still learning, so don't put the burden of "I'm absolutely terrible" in your mind. You learn, you grow. Just believe in yourself and constantly find ways to improve and rewatch your streams and figure what actually can you improve, bit by bit. It's a learning experience, you must water the grass each day!

Man, thank you, genuinely. I just got off a stream with way less views than I got usually and I felt very bad about it. But watching your video really made me realise; 1. my „usually“ has only been about two months 2. I haven’t done even near as much as I could have done (Ive got a lot planned but only posting on one platform atm) and 3. I actually tried something new today, so it was to be expected I love this video, it put me right back on my feet, just what I needed 👌🏻

I feel like the "eh, good enough" issue also needs to be balanced with "ugh, its not ✨PERFECT✨ yet" - one of my biggest mistakes has been sitting on ideas or content too long, polishing and polishing and never uploading or never streaming the fun ideas I have because I'm too worried about refining it until I'm blue in the face. Definitely some learning to be had with knowing when to "let go" and just do it

The biggest mistake I see in other streamers are that their streams are to long because they think they have to do a 12h stream because of reasons but they're just having content and fun for 2h. The biggest mistake I make myself as content creator is a lack of focus. I changed the content of my channel and streams nearly every day. One day it was a gaming channel and the next day it was an reaction channel only to be a tutorial channel after, I made just chatting streams. Not even my language was consistent one stream/ video was in german and the other one was in english because I thought maybe one thing sticks with viewers and I would focus on that thing but the result was that I had a hundred videos with 0 views. After finding my type of content (german speaking gaming videos) there was still a huge variety in the types of games what I played and to an extend I'm still making that mistake to this day. Also a mistake for me at least is playing "boring" games where the game doesn't provide a lot of stuff to talk about and the gameplay itself could be replaced with a Screenshot. Yes a good streamer could probably make a fun stream out of it, but not if you have 0 viewers and started with streaming a week ago, and are desperate for something to talk about. Which is also a thing I did.

I just want to say thank you for your videos. I have to work a normal job and i started streaming because i love gaming and i enjoyed sharing awesome moments with friends and i learnt to love the interaction when people do come watch and chat. Because of your advice i started doing some TIKTOK and YT shorts, but its hard to find the time with work, and actually wanting to do the thing i love which is the gaming/being live part. I have realized from your videos and experience that the stuff you do outside of being live like TIKTOK/YT is the important part for any growth or sustainability. But its so disheartening to be taken away from the thing i love doing (Gaming and live streaming), and still having to work and earn a living. I guess i just want to say thanks for giving us the advice and tools to at least try make a difference in spite of what we up against.

Well I will do my first stream tomorrow. And most important for me is to learn how everything works. I am 50 and think learning new skills is never a waste of time sure followers is fun a specially to create more content i will play one game and not even the most popular game but I am not a pro game either so I think it will be fun for me fumbeling around while others find it so easy and obvious but beginning a game at the start and getting good at it is a journey on it's own.

My biggest mistake, was not having a niche or a brand for my stream. Ever since i sat down and thought about what i want. my results are way much better now and now my audience understands my goal and purpose which makes them come back a lot more.

Personal mistake I made was rushing to affiliate on twitch and then hitting a wall. The walls name was consistency. My stream was schedule was all over the place and sometimes wouldn’t be available to stream for months at a time due to work. How I’m fixing it? Just make RU-vid videos in batches and schedule upload and grow a community there who enjoys the things I enjoy. Also if I have time I can stream there with the people who watched my videos. I feel like not having a stream schedule is more detrimental on twitch than it is RU-vid as long as there are scheduled video uploads and shorts for viewers to take in while you are not live. Lastly use RU-vids community tab it’s like twitter but inside RU-vid to keep the people in the loop. Thanks for the video eljay! -cheers

Community: I’m doing a gamer vs girlfriend series where we compete in a best of 7 games with various twists thrown in. These 7 games are all different however. Change the category every time; that way, someone searching for a stream of that game could spot that you're doing something different (Playing against your girlfriend) and choose your stream over other people.

Changing habit because of stream scheme. I used to stream from 5 till 1 AM for 3 months. And 0% progress i got. But now I've changed my schedule and spread more. Stream less to grow more is the right motto and whoever said was right

From a twitch viewer: Another streamer “mistake” I sometimes see is streamers mentioning the business aspect of streaming to the viewers. For example, streamers saying; “Thank you for helping the channel grow”, “We just reached 100 subs”, mentioning how a raid off is good for the channel, pushing hype train progression and so on. As a viewer this always makes me feel a little put off or even uncomfortable. You will never hear a company use “thank you for helping our company grow” or “thank you for helping us reach our sales goals”. That would be very off putting to the consumer. I’m not in someone’s stream to support a business. I’m there because I like the vibe of the creator and the chat - the person… the people. I cheer, subscribe or gift subscriptions because I want to show my gratitude to the streamer, not because I am a shareholder and trying to grow a business - I get nothing back.

Streaming in your native language, but when a really nice and active english speaking chatters shows up, you completely switch to english and then you lose your non-active in chat native language viewers. Im seriously having a dilemma with this. I feel like switching from my country audience to world audience is going to be much harder to grow. I was also thinking about having english only streams and then my native language only streams... whats your tip Eljay?

hahaha, that was a hit on the right place. I am in the stage: "Eh.. Good enough" before strating a stream, because I know if I try finishing all and do the things better, I will never stream. So in the streams I adimt that it needs improving, but.. before it its just ehh.. (for the protocol, it's not for games, it's for art... I don't know if that counts) But I get the point when mentioned from someone else. Thanks for the video!

My biggest problem when I review my vods is being “stale” when I have no viewers. Sometimes I get really locked in to the game and forget I’m streaming and don’t talk at all. Need to be consistently speaking about SOMETHING to keep it entertaining

TLDR: Do what you enjoy, but if at any point you choose want to post any left field content make sure you let your audience know first so they understand what your channel is about... The one thing that I want to mention or add more to / clarification incase people do this is in the Timestamp 7:47. Basically talks about left field content. One thing I ALWAYS do and what I did recently for my channel is I let my audience know in a "Channel Update" video before making said left field content. Because I was making alot of Overwatch 2 & Fortnite Content. I decided to be transparent with my audience and tell them that I no longer want to post this type of content because I wanna focus on things like Rogue-Likes, SoulsBorne Games, RPGs, etc. Things that I felt like were my true passion and not what gave me views & success. Because even though I felt like that content was doing generally well for my channel, especially in the Shorts. I was not enjoying myself. So when I made that said video before posting the new content I actually noticed a pretty good turnaround and was actually expecting many people to unsubscribe to my channel because it was not what they subscribed for. Sometimes if you're not giving your audience what they want they will more than likely end up leaving you, but I think one thing this doesn't mention though is as long as you are Transparent with your audience before the major change and they can prepare for it I feel like they'll give you a chance at least and what to check out this new content. The big thing here to any success to any content creator is Transparency.

I'm honestly just thinking of giving up streaming right now tbh. Been streaming for about 5 years now, I started on mixer and now I'm on twitch and I play on series x. I play a lot of dead by daylight cuz its the one game that gets any views on the channel but the games justly super sweaty and not very fun anymore. I never experience any growth, my mind is mostly negative and I just dont feel like o can do anything while streaming. I have no overlays, no alerts or anything just a webcam and laptop. I'm about as bottom of the barrel as you can get plus some youtubers have used me for videos in times where I've gotten frustrated and titled. So it's really hard for me to bother in trying anymore

If the barometer for success isn't how well a product is received or show doesn't land, then how do we move forward? "Good enough" will never be good enough, which is something I think you missed mentioning here: setting realistic goals and expectation management. I don't have the level of success you, or most, have. I think it is worth mentioning in your how to's and advice messages....because you've done it in the past. I'll preface this by saying I'm 41 so I have a bit more age on me than a LOT of the average Twitch viewer. What I find as a bit of a turn-off from a lot of streamers is that many of them have no idea how to make use of the situations presented to them. Studying a bit of improv comedy techniques and learning how to connect situations (especially bad ones) with humor. So many streamers I see just have dead space and then when something goes pear-shaped, they get angry. But, for me, the entertaining streamers turn that dead air space into a story and then when the game starts going badly, they weave that into the story as the conflict. For example, Dead By Daylight, I'd see people interacting with other survivors and acting like generator repair technicians while the killer is suddenly a cantankerous neighbor who just wants the damn kids off his damn lawn. Immensely more fun than hours of trash talk when it's going well and crying when it's going poorly. But again, I'm older, and don't normally like watching streams.

Eljay, you said some time a go you played Minecraft but eventually felt burned out by it. Pokemon is quite a bit different than Minecraft. Did you simply have to build a totally new audience for Pokemon and more or less abandon the Minecraft audience? That is currently what I am doing. The game I was covering I more or less can't stand anymore, and while I have a core of fans who are dedicated to me, it's still about a 60-70% reduction of viewership (which I also expected). Did this also happen to you when you switched from Minecraft to Pokemon?

If I haven't lost motivation streaming by now then I never will (I streamed for 53 hours to 0 viewers over 30 days) Also make sure u don't have ur stream marked as a rerun I did and 10 mins after I unmarked it I got 3 viewers.
