October 2020 updates from around Cerro Gordo, including the rebuilding of the American Hotel, unexplored mines, lumber delivery, a gym, and more...
You can follow my journey on Instagram: / brentwunderwood
You can send me mail at:
PO Box 490, Lone Pine, CA 93545
THANK YOU!!
I moved to Cerro Gordo in March 2020 because of the pandemic and to relieve our longtime caretaker so he could be back home. I've been here ever since. There have been ups and downs, but I feel I am learning a lot and becoming a better person.
Follow along on this channel for more from the town. I have no plans to leave and will continue making videos to update the progress on all the projects!
The town was originally established in 1865 and by 1869 they were pulling 340 tons of bullion out of the mountain for Los Angeles.
The silver from Cerro Gordo was responsible for building Los Angeles. The prosperity of Cerro Gordo demanded a larger port city and pushed LA to develop quickly.
The Los Angeles News once wrote:
“What Los Angeles is, is mainly due to it. It is the silver cord that binds our present existence. Should it be uncomfortably severed, we would inevitably collapse.”
In total, there has been over $17,000,000 of minerals pulled from Cerro Gordo. Adjusted for inflation, that number is close to $500,000,000.
It’s been a wild ride so far owning a ‘ghost town’ and we’re having a lot of fun figuring out what to do with it.
Subscribe by email to get one email per month on most recent renovations, artifact finds, cave explorations, ghosts?, and more...
mailchi.mp/d8ce3179cf0c/cerro...
The type of things that might lead you here are interests in ghost towns, abandoned mining towns, abandoned cities, California history, the zombie apocalypse, ghost stories, scary stories, nature, death valley, lone pine CA, mines, exploring, overnight challenges, exploration, urban exploration and yes theory.

I'd love to see a step by step video rebuild of the hotel :) I love crafting and building videos, you have a chance to show how you'll evolve your town and every single thing and that's so interesting :) Also, creating a whole map of all the mines you explore and all the levels of mines, would be sooo cool :) You could then keep it free or sell it to explorers :)

CALIF has a long growing season. At some point it would be wise to bring on board a person who has growing skills. If you invest in some raised garden beds and growing soil and organic fertilizer you could produce a lot of fresh food. Also if your hotel bar could serve cactus juice, that is a product that could be sustainable. It's just another way to make use of the potential there.

@arnorobinwerkman
@arnorobinwerkman 3 года назад
@@seanconway6905 ,wait , what? so you need a permit to collect rain water that otherwise would go to waste? where i live, you can collect as much rain water as you want, the only requirement is that you take measures to prevent that water from becoming an mosquito infestation due to still standing water, and as long as its on YOUR property. and you need only a building permit to built a concrete tank to collect water, if you choose to build one, with is just a formality, and cost about 10 $ for the paperwork, and you get free advice on how to use that water for irrigation, mosquito prevention, and you can get free chlorine to put in the water if it is for irrigation. and if its for agriculture the permit and everything is free.

Emergency response advisor here: It only takes one breath in an oxygen deficient atmosphere to pass out and you don't get back up. Put the gas detector in before you go in! Same for changing levels. For horizontal attach it to a stick. Vertical use a string. If you keep doing this stuff alone it's going to kill you. Way more dangerous than u seem to realize
@EvilDuckOfDoom3

I literally read this comment 20 seconds before he said it in the video. I could not agree more, people need to try building a business that shows the love of it and not just try to crank out the first thing they can dump for money. Too many people focus on money as the end goal and seeing the love that's going into this town is literally what entrepreneurship SHOULD be.
@dariocavegn4052
@dariocavegn4052 3 года назад
@@joshshoberg8598 Money is one thing, but what strikes me is that there's almost no notion of financial sustainability anymore. Bag grants and investment funding, exit, that's it. Whether or not the company can sustain itself, who cares... And because entrepreneurship is very much seen as one and the same as running a tech start-up, almost all of the newer reference material completely disregards the fact that anyone outside the Silicon Valley circus (and comparable places!) will need cash flow to survive, and to turn a profit as well.

I really like the bit about start ups. I remember having a chat with some investors years back & quickly realized that they were in the business of hyping bad ideas and selling them off before the buyer could catch onto them. It made me sick to my stomach. I get that weasels abound, but I really, truly respect people who are in it for the long haul. I wish you the best of luck in your efforts.

Well, the lake that used to bring water back in the silver mining days was diverted. So, there was no natural water source except for trying to dig down. Apparently, at the bottom of the mine, is a water source that’s pumped out. It goes in and out. They will get it worked out before people are actually staying up there. With it being just him up there living at the moment, he can handle his showers the way he does now.

I started a College class to get my IT Certification (Cyber-security) I just passed my Midterm with a solid B.. Now I am going to be turning on the afterburners andf studying for the Final on Nov. 11th. I am finding out Hardships and problems only seem to make us stronger if we don't give up. I grew up in So Cal and spent years in the high desert roaming around. From Palmdale/Lancaster to the Painted Desert and Joshwa Tree and all over Silverado Canion .. It's a smell you never forget and when you catch a wisp it transforms you back into time with visions of a lively mining town on the edge of nowhere. Kinda like the first impressions from Knott's Berry Farm and Disneyland. It's such a powerful thing Walt Disney spent millions trying to capture that simple feeling,smell,view... Id drop everything to come up and help you build that town back to its former glory. Cheers from a So Cal native living in Texas!

June Corrigan My parents both grew up in the Bay Area (Oakland & El Cerrito) & I was born in Sacramento when they were in college at Davis, but they moved to Kansas when I was a baby. Every summer we’d go out to visit family for a couple months & I’ve stayed a few summers & a couple 3 month stays around Christmas, so I’ve probably spent a total of around three years in the the Bay Area, Davis, Mt. Shasta & the Clear Lake, north of Napa. I’ve been to Knott’s Berry Farm several times as well (seeing that in the comments made me very nostalgic). I suppose I’ve always thought of myself as a native Californian, even though I didn’t grow up there. Those smells (the Bay Area salt & fog, the eucalyptus, the redwoods & my grandfather’s old cabin in the sierras) are something I could never forget. I’ve always wanted to move there, but it just hasn’t been in the cards so far.

Hi! Love the content. Seen every video. My suggestion is about the logs of milled wood you received. I've been an arborist for a number of years and I absolutely love freshly milled wood. when you get wood like that. Use it for something decorative, like a bar counter, or tables for your restaurant. That way it gets seen and appreciated for what it is. A beautiful hunk of what used to be a beautiful tree. When it's used as flooring ( the way that has been cut it could be difficult to incorporate as flooring ) it just gets trampled and abused. And not alot of people notice it for what it once was. Like a wood guy like myself. That's just my two cents. Keep up the awesome content. Love every second of it

As a laborer myself, I can promise you, that working out with gym equipment is much different than the physical labor during construction. It is actually much better, safer and healthier, to get a warm up workout in and then do the chores, than just jumping on the chores. He knows what he is doing ;) I just want to be there and start the circle of life. Get some topsoil in, composting, weeds for the goats, cover crop, trees and create a water source. Revive the springs. When I win the lottery, I will volunteer and help out with that! This is just the coolest thing since the Arctic!

Hey Brent! Can you go more into the story of the 200 level? What's it mean if there is another entrance/exit? Wouldn't the miners have used that to escape when the accident happened on that level? Have you found any human remains there, or in any of your adventures in the mines? Would you ever allow the people in the future AirBnBs to explore the tunnels as you do? On the safer levels, of course. (On a personal note, I'm from Boston, currently living across the bay from Tampa going to USF, and when growing up in Boston my dad ran a youth hostel, as you do.
