Here's a continuation of my search for ways into the main Union Mine at Cerro Gordo without using the central shaft and hoist. This time I start with the Omega Mine, using a loader, backhoe, and dynamite to bust in. Then it was onto the Bullion.
A couple weeks back, Johnny and explored the Bullion Mine in what was the most terrifying mine exploration I'd ever done. You can watch that here:

@@donnachristianson1502 For most of the journey, trains and ships would have carried the timber from where it was felled to the train depots and shipping ports of Los Angeles, but from there they'd likely have had to haul everything up the mountain via horse drawn wagon or similar type of hauling vehicle. There _were_ some steam powered wagons that existed at the time that could have handled that kind of load, but they weren't designed for that kind of rugged terrain and were mainly used to move cargo between ships and warehouses or factories on the docks.

@kevinburgess1033
@kevinburgess1033 3 года назад
I mentioned this earlier in a previous comment and figured that it's worth it to put it out there. I know that exploring abandoned mines is inherently risky, but that makes it all the more important for the team to be cautious and smart about exploring. We've seen that Brent understands this but Johny being risky for the sake of looking "cool" is a great way to get both him and Brent killed. Johny is very mistaken when he mentions that, "As long as it's my life I'm risking I'm ok," not only because he is risking Brents life, but he also is risking all the lives that may have to venture into the mine to save him if he gets stuck or breaks a leg. Brent, you are the responsible one here. What you guys are doing is very brave and I admire you for that. But safety comes before ego.

I was trying to find a comment exactly like this. Very well said 👏 The dangers in the mines are endless. The fact that sometimes when there are risky and “cool” things being done, it poses a threat. Would love to see more precaution when they go down instead of these “cool” stunts :/
@AndyHullMcPenguin

One of my local heroes passed away recently. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamish_MacInnes Part of his legacy, are the many innovations in safety and mountain rescue equipment and procedures that he devised. There is always risk when you go into risky places. The trick is to identify, and manage that risk. Wearing a hi vis jacket is not about you looking cool or otherwise, its about helping others to see you. I've done my fair share of dumbassed risky things, and so far, been lucky enough not to die. I've also seen enough examples of what happens when you make a mistake, to know that the only thing that saved me from being the guy on the stretcher or in the body bag was luck. Keep exploring, keep learning, but first and foremost keep safe.

Hey! Great video! A few more things about climbing: 1. do not put your arm or head in between the rope and whatever you're climnbing. always keep it in between your body going straight up. Because your arm or head will get trapped in between the rope and the wall or ladder or something else and that could easily break your arm or get you trapped. 2. always secure your rope on multiple points. you tie it down a few feet away from the hole or ledge, and then tie it down again where your rope should be to descend. there are special anchors for this purpose. 3. use pads on the points where your rope is tied around something or where it rubs on a ledge to protect your rope from abrading. climbing rope is expensive and any fraying means that your rope should be thrown away because it won't be safe anymore.

Have to write this as I can't watch this in good conscience without knowing I said something. The absolutely casual relationship with safety or concern for best practices in these videos is without a doubt a foreshadow of tragedy. I do a lot of dangerous things, and I am constantly trying to win back slack against the odds with thought, planning, and equipment. Watching these I am 100% sure there is an unfortunate incident in the future if things continue the way they are. So certain that you're flirting with disaster I would feel bad watching these without commenting. If you own that mine- you set the rules. Safety isn't negotiable. Because one person is cavalier with their life doesn't absolve you from the impact of the fallout. Think of how you felt when the hotel burnt down... the regret for not thinking about the wiring. Now think of that moment after someone acting cavalier and moving too fast gets buried alive, crushed, hell- just a bad leg break, pressure pneumothorax, or a bleeding wound... no way you're going to get back up in time. Your margins for error are much smaller than you think. That guy being reckless isn't just endangering himself, he's moving quickly and headlong into things that (even if he's the only one who dies) will massively impact you mentally, physically, emotionally, and monetarily. You are missing a ton of warning signs and you may lack the fortitude to be authoritative with those around you. I say all this out of a concern for where this is heading. Edit: Happy to see you being MORE safety cautious. But you need to stay on that, think over the horizon. I like your videos and your enthusiasm. I don't want anything to happen.

The fact that miners got headaches from NG is what started the medical community to investigate it. It turns out NG dilates the arteries in the body (hence the pounding headache). However, dilating arteries that are closing from a clot or plaque is a good thing for heart patients. As a paramedic, I've given NG to lots of folks with chest pain. I always joke with them and tell them not to sneeze or the NG will explode! :)

The explanation that I've heard about why jeans were left in mines is because they would take them off and pass them to the next shift of miners that were coming in and I guess when the mines closed and no one returned, there was no one to pass the jeans to so they just remained in the mine.

That connecting level on the Bouillon looked like there was still a good bit of silver ore in there. I'm sure there is probably cartloads in the ores chutes. People would probably pay some money for souvenirs/commemorative items made from the ore. Have someone slice up the rocks, polish them up and coat them so the silver doesn't oxidize. They'd make awesome coasters, Christmas tree ornaments, pendants, etc.... You could probably sell them for fundraising to rebuild the hotel and other projects.
