@@WERTYUIO821 I remember the narrators mentioning the "curse" the moment he touched the trophy before the match, so I believe that idea must be global lol
@ham and cheese he coached the football team I support, which is probably worse than a concentration camp. I just mentioned him because I'd like to know more about the man without doing the research myself. But Guttman probably lived one of the most interesting lives in the XX century for someone connected to football, so it would definitely be a really good video.
@@sbongadlamini388 Yes. And not only that, the year he joined, 2006-07, that was the year Chelsea lost the League to United, missing out on a chance to win the league 3 times in a row, which only 4 clubs have ever done in the English top flight. 2007-08 was even worse, as he was runner up in the Premier League, Champions League and League Cup. And on top of all that, he also lost the Euro 2008 final. (Thus missing out on a second Quadruple) Not to mention he also wore no.13, which is a little concerning.
I’m so glad you talked about the St Andrews curse, any blues talk is appreciated !! I’m surprised you didn’t mention Barry Fry (our manager at the time) pissing in every corner of the ground to try to remove the curse though 😂 Great vid btw
Schalke and Hamburg are just as bad regarding winning titles during the 21st century (I won‘t count HSV winning the DFL Ligapokal back in 2003, or Schalke winning the DFB Pokal in 2011, btw.). It‘s truly a curse, that is only comparable to that of Tottenham as well even Arsenal.
@@daridosgme9395 my dads a taxi driver and he picked up Andy Carroll and Joe Hart up after a night out drinking in liverpool and Carroll was a dick and so the next day my dad called me up and said hes done with Carroll and hes putting a curse on him. Ever since hes had injury after injury
As an Australian, I can say with every fiber of my being that the curse was indeed real. Rewatching highlights from that match now acts as a safety blanket that comforts me whenever I have to watch us lose to developing countries in world cup qualifiers.
@@humbleyourself1464 if you are spotted with drake, take a picture with drake or anything like that in the media, you will 100% lose the next game you play because of it
@@jamievardyshavingaparty me too from Galway. Parents are from Mayo. Mayo is quite similar to Benfica. Benfica have lost finals in last minute and penalties, like Mayo have lost in replays and last 3 finals to Dublin by 1 point.
9:34 Birmingham City had already won the League Cup in 1963, the club's 2011 success was both their second major trophy and their second League Cup triumph.
Going @12 consecutive final losses. 1 Intercontinental Cup (1962 to Santos), 5 European Cup, 3 UEFA Cup, and 3 UEFA Youth League. I'm a Porto fan, and although I cannot be too sad about it, I must say that this U-19 loss to Real Madrid was harrowing and undeserved. Had a LOT of bad luck against Real Madrid. Ball twice to the post in the same play... Jesus I don't believe in curses, but you really are having a LOT of bad luck.
This channel is brilliant, it elevates football to a higher level. Love all the research you do and hearing about the history. The People's Channel indeed
I'd love to watch a Bélla Gutman as he's the man who won both of Benfica's Champions Leagues and the man who prevented us from having 10 international trophies by now ahahah.
You should have included the curse of Maeda, where for 6 seasons in a row, the first team Maeda scored against each season was relegated that season, including Gamba Osaka, who were one of the best teams in Japan at the time
When I first started watching these videos I couldn’t bare sitting through a whole one, but over time I’ve really changed my mind to love your videos, they’re informative with being boring, you and the Irish guy have the best footy channel on here in my eyes!
The thing about curses is that they affect your mentality. And mentality is everything when it comes to winning or losing in football. They might be nonsense when viewed rationally, but there's always that "what if" lurking in the back of your head - if you see one thing going wrong, you blame it on the curse and start playing worse as a result because you believe there's no point. If only blessings had the same effect.
Aussie here, the witch doctor curse reversal was done in the TV show John Safran vs God and is really worth watching. It was actually a witch doctor from Mozambique and the ritual to reverse the curse was done at the same ground of the original curse. Whether you believe it or not, we have qualified for every single World Cup since the curse was lifted.
CORRETION: Eusébio only won 1 European Cup. He was part of Benfica first team in the 1960/61 season, but he didn't play in the European Cup. Great job with the channel, by the way!!!
All time Premier League 11 vs All time La Liga 11 And same could be done for other Leagues SeriesA, League1 and Bundisliga As a Series and ranking which league comes 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th in historic 11s

Guttman was the manager of the legendary Hungary teams of the 50s the mighty Magyars! Who lost the 1954 to West Germany! Please do a Guttman video as I think the Football Historians would like it!
Technically the Bela Guttman curse is broken, we did win the International Champions Cup last season with Adel Taarabt scoring a tie against AC Milan for us to lift the title. *Is what I tell myself so I can sleep*
I didn't know if they featured but Zlatan,Suarez and Lewandowski should be considered..also Chiellini,Ramos and Neuer and as an outside chance maybe Modric..others who can still make it are Hazard,Neymar and De Bruyne
Another German one: Schalke. They won the German championship 7 times (but all before the Bundesliga was launched), but since then, they won sometimes in international championships or in the DFB Pokal, but always ended somewhere between 2 and 18 in the Bundesliga. Even though they won for example the title in the 2. Bundesliga twice, they never won the big title in the Bundesliga. They also are number 7 in the all-time Bundesliga table, making them the best team who never won the Bundesliga title. They came close in the 2000/01 season, but in the end Bayern still got a goal against the HSV, giving them the needed point to win the title. And all of that was decided in the last few minutes of the season. We also have a joke here: Schalker kriegen keine Schale (Schalkers don't get a bowl), since the trophy is shaped like a bowl
At 2:14, you say that Bela Guttmann , alongside Eusebio, won a european cup twice in the space of 3 years, but Eusebio didn't win the first one. He signed a year after that. However, this didn't change the quality of the content, in this video. Keep it up!
"Urrea's curse on Cali" title should be corrected. Cali is more related to referring crosstown rivals, Deportivo de Cali. America de Cali is referred to as simply America or los Diablos. Otherwise, worth looking into America de Cali as a team. Very interesting on all fronts.
i know Scotland's Old Firm between Rangers and Celtic, Germany's Der Klassiker Bayern and Dortmund. Spain's El Classico Madrid and Barca. and debatably the Manchester Derby Between United and City not much else.
Olimpia (my team) had an 11 year local trophy drought that lasted from 2000 to 2011. A wild story at the time was that some people went to a witch named Kumanchu, to give the club luck at the Libertadores 2002 (which the team won), but they never payed him afterwards. So in return, he cursed the team. That period was the worst in the club's history, which even got close to the relegation places at one point. Allegedly, someone went to the witch in 2011 and payed the debt so he could lift the curse. That same year, the first title in 11 years was won.
My country Vietnam had a curse in SEA GAMES (southeast asia's olympic), we have to wait 60 years (from 1959 to 2019) to win a gold medal once again, in those 60 years we managed to choke on 7 finals, 7 semi finals. Needless to say how happy we were last year when the curse was broken
Just commented that there was supposedly a curse on St Mary's when it was first built as it was allegedly some ancient burial ground. There's plenty of reasons for us not winning major trophies from a few bad owners, losing good players to bigger clubs, etc but I think we can rule out ancient curses. Especially we weren't winning major trophies before we moved to St Mary's.
There are many Pompey shirts buried underneath the St. Mary's pitch put there by contractors from Portsmouth who helped build St. Mary's. There's your problem!
@@sammyhill69 Yeah I've heard that rumour as well. Same as that there are allegedly a few Saints shirts buried under the Spinnaker Tower. Personally I don't believe in superstitions when it comes to football. There are far more logical explanations for the lack of fortunes of both Saints and Pompey over the years.
Ypu should definitely do a video on Bela Guttmann. Fascinating man. Failing that, you ever thought about teaming up with Simon Whistler at Biographics? :P
Liverpool also had a curse by an African witch doctor, according to Bruce Grobelaar. Apparently During a testimonial or something of that sport a witch doctor sprinkled water on the Anfield goals saying the club would never win the league without Grobelaar in goal. Grobelaar has since reversed the curse by urinating on the goalposts during a legends fixture in 2018 or 2019
There’s a curse on Cruz azul since 1997 I believe that’s the year it stars you should learn more about it and I would love it if you at least mentioned it in a video

Talk about the 1987 Brazilian league 1st division title! The championship that year was divided in 2 modules, the green and yellow if I’m not mistaken. The champions of each module should play against each other to decided the title, but Flamengo refused to play and Sport Recife were crowned champions. To this day, more than 30 years later, Flamengo still disputes the title in the judicial system, never having any success.
