Keep a pair of his first size baby socks to hang on your chritmas tree. When he is older you can put a small treat in them. I did this with my boys. It was fun showing them each year how small their feet were as babies.

If one DOES use cloth nappies / diapers: some experiential advice from a former nanny who has used ALL the variations, with many many children. Including the rectangular old-fashioned ones with the giant safety pin (not a favorite, but, done that!). Don't go for the velcro on the exterior. Go for the snaps. Why? NOISE! If you're changing a sleepy child, the loud velcro may disrupt your goal of a clean, sleeping child. I learned that one pretty fast, after velcro noise ruined some nap-times. Go for the snaps, instead. But, that's for the re-usable cloth nappies / diapers. No velcro! Too noisy! Plus, the velcro kind of tears up things in the wash. Go for snaps. Just a little tip for others out there, maybe making some diapering plans & decisions.

My son is 6 weeks old and doesnt like being set down and demands all the cuddles (which I love) so my wrap carrier has been a god send

I've found that the cloth diapers help with toilet training when they're older. Many of the new diapers keep the kids so dry they can't feel when they pee to learn the signs of when to go. A big wet diaper really lets you know and is so annoying that you are motivated as a kid to get out of them! Loved your list so much!!!

I love when both Jess and Claud are explaining the same thing in different ways, but they just speak at the same time, and it becomes a mess. 😂😂 I'm so used to see people on RU-vid orchestrating how they're gonna explain something so that it gets perfect, but in reality that's not how we explain things to friends and family. While every kid is different - especially kids preferences for rocking vs bouncing vs stillness - I Highly recommend you hold on to the stuff he doesn't like right now (bouncer and white noise especially). 4 months is a particularly tricky age as they start having sleep regressions and teething. Anything you have around to try to keep them asleep when their teeth hurt or help them cope when they're going through a tough developmental leap is good. 💜

We also love the multi-layer muslin cloths! As our daughter has grown, and she has become more interested in her surroundings, we get more use out of longer muslin “rectangles” because she quickly turns her head left/right and it’s very hard to anticipate the direction of the spit up.

Rupert is like those mysterious secret agents in the movies where you never see their face and it's always hidden with some creative object/angle 😂 (I'm pretty sure this was a real movie right?)

Disabled or not, that car seat (or at least that style) looks like an absolute necessity for any parent truthfully. Safety in motion!

Don't worry about leaving your child in a diaper. Cloth or disposable, they are designed to keep your child dry. You don't need to change them as often as you think. Especially, like Claudia said, if your child is super sleepy and hasn't really peed too much or there is no poop, you can leave the diaper for a bit longer. Listen, my nephew learned to pull himself up and stand today. When babies do things it's pretty exciting. 😂

The bucket bath is more useful after they start crawling. My friends just put it in the tub and took their shower while sitting with the baby taking theirs. Once he really gets moving confine him in the bucket is more helpful at bath time.

I’m so excited for this video! My sister-in-law just had a baby this morning, my best friend is due in November, and I am pregnant with my first (due in February 2022) after losing our baby in April this year. To say babies are the main thing on my mind would be an understatement. Haha 😂 👼🏻🤰🏻🤱🏻

When I had my oldest (1989 - US) good muslin squares were impossible to find, I made due with a cloth diaper...saved so many of my outfits from spit-up. I just adore his chattering away in the background, he sounds so jolly.

Claud is absolutely GORGEOUS, she’s been glowing since giving birth!!!!

Pro tip: When he sits up on his own put him in a square plastic or otherwise water safe laundry basket and place that in the tub. Like the weird American dollar store ones that have holes in them. Will protect his head if he leans over to hard and slips, and will keep all his toys within reach, and the water taps out of reach.

I absolutely loved the idea of filming while he is awake and in the room. The baby noises played really well with the conversation, it almost felt like he was giving his opinion too.

Jessica, can I just emphasise how valuable videos like this are for disabled parents/soon-to-be parents/people just considering if parenthood is doable with our disabilities!! So many scenarios we have to consider, more so than non-disabled parents because not only are we considering all the needs of the baby, but also our own limitations/difficulties. Your product explanations and recommendations make parenthood sound a lot more doable and less daunting. The Topponcino and 360 swivel car seat, I didn’t know existed and will help my back and mobility issues so much! I’m so very grateful for the work you do. I really do hope more companies reach out to you about the possibility of sponsorships and testing accessible baby/parenting products that you might be able to share with us. It’s incredibly valuable information for so many of us! And to you and Claudia, you both look so happy and absolutely smitten with Rupert. And thank you for sharing such a huge part of your lives with us.

My number 1 baby item that's always on "you don't need it" lists but I absolutely adore is the wipe warmer. I think the problem is people get the warmer for their baby who doesn't really care. I got that ish for me and I love it

My hilarious parents nailed legs to a drawer and put an extra firm pillow in it 🤣 not the safest or classiest bed for a baby but definitely functional. Ah, the 90s were a strange time. I was very excited by the bamaboo nappies! I was always going to use cloth but also having an ecosafe disposable will be so good. I have a few disabilities so I'd like to have the option depending on how I am and whether we're going out. We have bamboo baby wipes here in Australia so I've been using those for a little while for myself (ulcerative colitis is rough on the bum, not gonna lie). More bamboo disposables please!

I still have the basket my grandparents used for my father when he was born. (Like a wicker laundry basket) and a picture of him in it as a baby. 72 years later the basket still looks new

My son is the same age as Rupert. It's interesting to see how different they are in what works and doesn't. My go to product has been the boppy lounger pillow. He has reflux so I try to keep him elevated throughout the day.

I soo wish they had that sort of car seat when my kids were babies!!! I have three kids, and each one was very unique in what made them happy. My son much prefered his little swing, one of my girls loved the bouncy thing, and my other daughter liked both. There are other differences as well, and each one was a treasure! Now my babies are 23, 20, and 17 years old... on the plus side, I'm only 43 so we get to enjoy life together!

Couldn’t agree more with the 360. When you have back problems it’s well worth the extra. Re bouncer. We never used it with my first but used it constantly with my second. If you’ve got space I would save it if you want a second ☺️

We just played music, soft, soft, music in the bedroom to keep it from being totally silent. I hate white noise, I have sensory issues and it's exactly what it says-noise. Music at least has a purpose. One other suggestion for the bouncer is, if youre considering having more kids and have space to store things, consider saving it because subsequent babies may like it where this one didnt. If they dont, no biggie, gift it then, if they do, bam, you had something useful from the start. I'd toss the tub, though. That thing would have driven me bonkers for all the reasons you listed.

Best baby bath was the kitchen sink!😂 right up until my 2 were toddlers they loved splashing in the sink. It was great when i was cleaning the kitchen, strip them off & chuck them in the sink with some bubbles, kept them entertained for ages lol

In the states, usually, the next step up from the Moses basket is a play yard/ pack and play/ porta-crib. It's like a mobile traditional crib. Although, with the whole floor bed thing, you might just use a nap mat. Of course, as babies get older, they spend more of their time awake, so parents also use baby jumpers (they're called a lot of different things in the US, IDK what they're called in the UK) where their baby can bounce and play with little attached toys, and baby seats either with attached toys or an attached tray with whatever baby toys on it. This is typically for babies who can sit with support, but aren't able to have floor time without a parent's undivided attention.

10:20ish - I had that same issue with my younger two. What I wasn't told in advance (& you guys maybe not too), was that some babies' legs & hips area, just doesn't do well with the terry nappies. Not familiar with your Bamboo ones, but they look good. I ended up on the home-compostable (in a special wormery which is a once off cost, but for big gardeners: 6wks nappy to compost is epic!) from Moltex Oko. They were fab. Sent so many coupons for free ones too. That definitely helped. On the moses basket front (6lb lift limit & spinal damage, plus sensation issues similar to Jessica's), when mine outgrew the moses basket, during the worst phases when lifting to cot would just not have been safe, with a solid based pram, I just had their pram top, with the cosy off, and built a bed in there. Cot rules apply of course as far as safety, and you'll get looks/remarks, but by that point, I'd got to the 'I'm a disabled parent. Get out the bloody way & get a baby of your own if you want to parent one' - but then, I'm nowhere near as nice as you ladies are.

So true about how you need the baby to see what works! My son HATED his swing. My daughter slept exclusively in the swing until she was 3 months old! We even bought a second swing so we could keep one in the bedroom where I slept with her and one in the living room for during the day.

If you are making the topponchino (sorry about the spelling) his cue to sleep, you might need to get at least one more so you have a spare for when the first one has just been soiled and he won’t sleep without it.

If you decide to have more children it would be interesting to hear what worked differently for each child. For my kids I used the bouncy chair for my oldest until he was almost a year. But my youngest hated it.

Me, who only ever will be a furmom: ah yes, lets watch this.

The only time I found the bouncer useful for my kids was when I needed a shower and needed to have them in the bathroom with me on days I was alone. I had to shower quickly though because they didn't put up with it for long, even with the mobile attached to it. The most useful thing for our family was the nursing pillow. (The "C" shaped kind.) Was so great for propping them up when they were a bit older ready to look around. Tried the reusable nappies too. Hated them. Wish they had the bamboo ones back then. My kids have all had super sensitive skin. The midwife even suggested olive oil for their bums because the rash cream was too harsh and caused more problems but putting nothing created rashes. Ah, the joys of motherhood (mine are 12, 9 and 7 now).

The “cheese in the cutlery drawer” slayed me 🤣

I do think poor quality white noise machines can be more grating than soothing. My solution is to get a rickety old fan and turn that on. It's nice and loud and does the trick perfectly!

Our kids hated the white noise machine, so I switched them to thunder storm/rain sounds at about 4 weeks. They're 4, almost 5, now and sleep straight through any storms we have without waking up. It might be a handy, more natural alternative to the white noise.

For the sake of the discussion, here are my agreements and disagreements re Useful Or Not Useful Baby Things (tm): The Moses basket - I personally could never be bothered to buy a specific bed for when mine was tiny; I just got a regular crib - which I didn't use for the first five months, because it turned out baby slept best in the bassinet that goes on the pram, and since that part could be detached AND even had a decent handle, I used it much like you describe using the Moses basket until baby decided they were sick of it (which was at four months of age or some such). The muslin squares: Oh dang, I wish I'd come across those multi-layer ones before. I would probably have loved them too. I had some of those flannel wipes which I used instead and they worked okay, but they were only proper good for wiping little bums. The swivelling car seat: I wish I'd found this, too. Messed up my back completely for a little while when baby was a couple of months old, and the regular non-swivelly car seat did NOT do wonders for that. It was just as well I don't tend to drive much. The bouncer: Funnily enough, my smol loved theirs and I used it a LOT until they figured out how to sit on their own; they quickly learned how to bounce themselves and everything (which was adorable). (My mum tells me I sat in one of them so much when I was an infant that I never figured out how to crawl, but I figured out how to sit and ended up scooching around on my backside instead. Maybe it's hereditary. :p ) Full agree on the bucket bath! I might have liked it more if I had bought/got one with a stand, so that I could have a reasonable working position myself. As it was I might have been better off bathing them in the sink for the first couple of weeks, actually. Which, sadly, didn't occur to me, so I ended up like crouching over them in the big bathtub WHILE holding them up with my own arm. Might have been why I did my back in, actually. :p The white noise machine: I tried the cheapo version (RU-vid on my phone :p ) and it made absolutely no useful difference, other than annoying me, so I think I can relate in some way.

For any US moms - I saw the cutest little muslin squares, the smaller ones, like they like here, at the dollar tree the other day! Like they were seriously, so adorable and super thick. Thought I would throw that out there for anyone who may find it helpful. I have never seen them there before last week. xo

As a retired nanny now Mama, if you haven't needed the bouncer by now, you won't ever use it. Some babies HATE being flat on their back, so for them the bouncer is a gift from God. Others don't mind being on their back and find the bouncer boring. My son slept solely in his bouncer for the first 3 months, my daughter hardly used hers. Every baby is different, even when raised the same.

My daughter is 6 months old and we just started using our babybjörn because she is so mobile now and we use it when we sit down to eat so we dont have to run around while eating ^-^

Muslin cloths are absolutely amazing! We grew up with them as kids and I still use mine regularly - from burping cloth to handkerchief 😂

my mother used to swear by double-weave birdseye squares, to the point where when they were no longer sold she'd buy the birdseye and make them herself. With cloth diapers, my favorite systems were the ones where you put the inserts inside a double-layer shell that stays dry inside, but eventually my kid's fussy skin reacted to everything but disposables. I never pre-soaked wipes, I just kept a peri bottle full of plain water and used water and flannel squares to clean up the baby. That said, some of the thicker disposable wipes will hold up to being washed and reused, which is something you discover by accident when you're cloth diapering.

know how much everyone loves unsolicited parenting advice, but essential oils aren't recommended under 3 months. but of course, you fab moms figured it out on your own.

I can imagine having a hand held shower head is helpful with a new born. I found it incredibly helpful after top surgery and will likely find it helpful after spine surgery thats in my future.

I'm watching all of your videos to get tips on how to take care of a baby and to have ideas to help her out, and I'm sending all of your vids to her so she can get ideas to get ready for the baby. As a mom of four I would suggest keeping the white noise machine for future children. (if you are planning on having more) As the white noise helps soften the loud, irregular, and surprising noises that your average healthy 2, 3, or 4 year old will be bound to make. (Not trying to box you into a time line.) Also you may want the bouncer for future children because every child is wildly different even in the same family. Who knows Rupert’s younger sibling may love to bounce. Love watching you be a family and figure out what works for you and your family. Also it might be worth repurchasing those items down the road when or if you have another baby. But I’m cheap and I would keep the items I already purchased.

Try the cloth diapers when you transition to toilet training. The soggy, wet diaper feeling helps them want to use the toilet instead of being wet.I found that my son did not care if he toddled around in the wet disposeable diaper all day because it didn't make him uncomfortable, but as soon as we put him in cloth ones he chose to tell me when he was wet, and then when he needed to toilet because he didn't like the wet diaper.

I COMPLETELY agree with all the "must haves" on this list, and the "Do not bother", especially with the bouncer and the white noise machine. I've learned that humming a tune to them while your rocking them to sleep, or feeding them to sleep works best.

those car seats are incredible! they use the same technology for older children as well which makes my life as a short person with a 18 kg 4 year old much easier. he can climb in and out of the car himself, it is very stable and secure. love it!

Awww this was lovely. My second is about 2 weeks older than Rupert, and every child is different. I've constantly been surprised how different my second is from my first. For instance, we never used white noise with my first, but have been using it all the time with my second (it helps to drown out the noise from my second playing during nap times 🤣). ALSO, my cousins and I saved up and and we all bought a rotation car seat, for a perfectly healthy niece and her husband, but.... all her friends in her baby group are "Where did you get that?" Because they end up hurting their backs.... doing that car seat thing. Healthy people love this also. Yes they have it available in the US (possibly not by the same name!)

Those muslin squares will be useful for years to come. Note: we use the white noise machine to cover noises in our house so my toddler won't wake up the baby while he is playing. Lovely video.

If your doing montessori, I'm also not surprised the bouncer and the white noise machine don't work for you guys, if your into free movement and natural sensory awareness, both those items override the natural nervous system.. and its better to use natural rest/rolling/play, and maybe soothing whale music or forest sounds as a background, at least birdsong or watery sounds are identifiable and much more soothing for us! 😁 You guys are doing so great! Instead of a "topponcino" I just had a small blanket. It was especially good for moving a sleeping baby to another place. Doesn't wake up (as easily).

Moses baskets are amazing! My Mom surprised us by bringing hers (mine/sister's) from back in the 80s when my daughter was born. It was custom made for her by a family friend and it's all fabric-covered, not woven, so the outside is soft too. When Dorothy was a newborn and she wasn't settling in her basinet we would put her in that, between us on the bed, and it was comfortable for everyone.

I bought a pack of muslin cloths from Mothercare when I was pregnant for the first time 25 years ago. These cloths were much thinner than yours, but I used them for everything. The best thing was that I could wash them at 95C, so they were always disinfected after being washed. I was still using them as house cleaning cloths years after my third child was no longer a toddler.

If muslin squares are not available but you have an Ikea near you, they have small terry washcloths that works for the same things. I have them everywhere.
