I don't color my hair. I'm almost 60 and it's still dark brown. I inherited this trait from my dad, who was just turning salt and pepper when he died in his 80s. The down side is I get lots of snark from people who assume I am dying it, and shame me for not being "natural". As women, we just can't win.

Yes Seila I do, but rarely. I did Biology at the so I understand the effects. I wear wigs sometimes when the grey is alot. If its just a little I may use black mascara to touch up my hairline at the front. My hair is also getting thin up top and I am having hot flashes. So when they leave my hair limp, I pull on a wig and head out. Tee-hee.

I grew out my blonde highlights during the COVID lockdown - and mine is definitely platinum. It’s very white. Most days I love it. Some days I still hate it because I feel older when I’m in a group. But my hair definitely feels healthier. I’m 63. And I’ll never go back to color!😊

I stopped dying my hair during the pandemic and am so glad I did--turns out my natural dark auburn hair complements my skin colouring far better than any box dye. I'm focusing on hair health by taking collagen and biotin supplements, using a chemical free shampoo bar, rinsing with apple cider vinegar, using a Mason Pearson hairbrush, finding a simple cut that suits me, and getting regular trims. Now at 54 I'm getting more compliments on my hair than I've ever had in my life. Thanks for the great content, Sheila!

I stopped coloring my hair 5 years ago and I saw my hairstylist frequently to cut off the multiple colors and layers I had. I did this for 6 months and I ABSOLUTELY love my salt and pepper hair ! 😍😍💕My hairstylist loved my new look, as well and she was such an encouragement in this process. I look MUCH younger, as a result. Be encouraged, Sheila ! You’ll be gorgeous.

That dyed black & super dark brown hair over 60 ages most women. I noticed this in my patients while I was in the 40's & immediately decided to stop coloring. With rare exceptions your natural hair color is best. The chemicals damage hair at a time when our hair naturally thins and is much more fragile.

I stopped dying my hair earlier this year , was easier for me as I am blond , still have a way to go . I was inspired by a friend of mine ( who had black hair ) and was developing an allergic reaction from her hair dye ( even the “natural ones”) so she embarked on the journey from black to gray , it took her two plus years and a rainbow of colours to transition ! But I admire her conviction ! She looks just as beautiful gray as she did when she had dark hair ! So much more liberating ✨ Best of luck to you Sheila as you embark on your transitional path! Your are beautiful both inside & out …and you will rock it every step of the way 👏👏👏

My hair was light brown/dishwater blond. When my hair was shoulder length I started with "adding color" started with streaks of ombre up to a full head. Last time I was pink, purple, teal and blue. These were temporary color although my white hair absorbed and held it for months. Had my hair cut into a bob. Now in a pixie. I have white naturally curly hair. May add touches of color again later. I'm 63 and had fun with the colors.

I feel your conflict! I had dark hair all of my life and it grew too fast to maintain when I started going white. I haven’t gone natural, but I am now blonde. I hated it for a couple years. Now I look at past pictures and don’t like the dark color at all. I didn’t cut it for the transition. Just gradually lightened it and use highlights. Not natural but no dark hair dyes.

Black and red (my former hair dye) is indeed bad per my oncologist. I developed a rare form of lymphoma on scalp rarely seen outside the body. I stopped immediately after dying my hair light blonde twice. I didn’t want to cut my hair so the blonde worked well to grow out my silver. You will find that your natural color will blend beautifully with your skin tone. Wait until you discover the beautiful colors that look stunning on your natural hair such as white, cream, fuchsia and green. I get more compliments with my natural hair than ever with the red. Best of luck with your journey. Silver hair is the new power color!

I most definitely challenge fashion rules. I am 69 years old and am 4’10” in height. I often dress somewhat classic (skinny or flair jeans, black or ivory top, blazer, and flats or heels); however, I love going for an edgy vibe which may include my Doc Marten platform combat or Chelsea boots, and a men’s jacket. I love wearing a black ribbed mini dress with tights, a cool belt, men’s jacket or pea coat, and my chunky Doc’s or Chelsea boots. I do wear flowy dresses with my boots, at times, as I occasionally like that juxtaposition of the contrasting styles. Fashion is just fun and playing with unexpected looks, especially at this age, brings me joy. I spend a lot of time experimenting with different looks and just embrace the creativity of fashion and style. I don’t take fashion so seriously as to subscribe to do’s and don’ts but just see fashion as an expression of art in which we get to be the canvas! The older I get, the more I find I don’t want to be limited by societal rules and expectations, particularly in regards to what I choose to wear. I guess I have become a bit of a rebel as whenever I see fashion videos of what women shouldn’t wear after “a certain age”, I’m like…”Oooo, let me get some ideas of some funky styles to try out”! I am kinda loving this stage of life…I don’t have to conform to social expectations and I FINALLY, got the hair color that I have always wanted…naturally….woo hoo…(for the most part) aging rocks!!!!

I do color my hair because I am just too young to go grey. Though being lazy, I am currently 2 inches gray, or more specificaly salt and pepper. It ages me by 2 decades so I really need to get my act together and get those greys covered. Unfortunately, darker hair makes my eyes pop. Out of laziness (and also concerns about dying my hair too frequently from a young age - first grays appeared when I was 25), I have gone for lighter browns. But dark brown really does look the best on me. So it's a struggle. I wish I were 6'1 instead of 5'1, so people were not constantly looking at the top of my head.

Great video, Sheila! Making the decision to stop coloring is not an easy one. I took the same route as you: cut my dyed (dark brown) hair short and grew out the cut and remaining color. I stopped coloring my hair about five years ago. Now after hearing this, I’m glad I did. I have had enough health problems about eight years ago. I don’t have my pituitary gland. I had a tumor around it and had to have it removed. Then I had colon problems which meant two more surgeries. And the anesthesia isn’t great for your hair either. Then I had a hernia. Which I had to have surgery on. I then had a lot of skin hanging on my abdomen. So I had a mini tummy tuck. I haven’t had a surgery for four years now. And I’m so happy. I have had my hair short most of my adult life. I have natural curly hair. Which means I have no control when it starts to grow out. I tried that a few years ago. And I couldn’t stand the frizzy hair I had. So it’s been short since. I’m still waiting for my hair to go gray. I’m 63 and I figured it would be gray by now. I started coloring my hair in my thirties. Now that I want it to be gray, it’s still a lot of brown. I know I don’t look good in black hair. I put color on once and it went really dark. I had to call my aunt, who was a hair stylist, and ask what to do. I was going to a wedding in a few days. And I looked so washed out. So I kept coloring it light brown. And when I was young my hair was almost black. But as you get older, and in my thirties, my coloring started to change. I don’t think I make any of the mistakes you mentioned. I put a black shirt on today, and I didn’t really like it. So I switched to a navy blue and it looked so much better. I don’t wear any big prints, and I haven’t for years. I have bought some tops that were cropped. I didn’t know it until it arrived at my house. And it went to my granddaughters. And only one of them will wear a cropped top.

How very exciting, you get to do a refresh on your hair! I don't color my hair; I've always enjoyed its natural hue, gray/silver and all (although, I did briefly got it colored a gorgeous shade of deep blue during one of my midlife crises, lol!). My mother had natural black hair and started to gray early in life, so she dyed it at home. She wound up what I call "up a tree": there came a point in her life when the color just looked a little too harsh, but she couldn't reconcile the idea of going natural (I think she would have rocked it!). I'm excited to see your transformations and how they will affect your clothing style :)

Good for you stopping the hair colour! I coloured my hair for 15 years. During most of that time I worked with the public. Stopped in 2018. My hair was light brown, and the hairdresser put blonde highlights in so the demarcation between the new growth and the coloured hair wasn't as noticeable. Yes I did go quite short, but if definitely was a faster process that way. There are quite a few you tubers who have shared their journey going grey if you are interested.

Hi Sheila, great decision on your hair. After thinking about it for a couple of years, I decided to quit coloring my hair during Covid. I have never looked back. My grey color looks almost blonde, which pleasantly surprised me. Because of the Covid restrictions, I wasn’t able to cut my hair during this process but that is a smart idea.. Love your videos!

I'm one year no dye and let my very gray hair grow. I had the color of hair yours is. I decided to let the demarcation come in and not fight it with lightening the hair as this will actually make hair very brittle. I only trimmed to a chin length bob. I use bobby pins to pin some of it back and that breaksup the line a little but I plan to just let it grow naturally. My hair is so much more healthy, less hair loss, and overall just best for me. I had deveoped so much hair loss, rashes and burning from dying my hair that I just had to stop.

I stopped coloring my hair back in January 2001. I was in my early 40s. I started getting gray/silver hair at 15. Graying early is a common thing in my family. As my hair grew out and i had cut the ends off as it grew, my hair was silver white. Today it is nearly all silver white, and I couldn't be happier. I've had more compliments from men than women. My hair is healthier in its natural state.

I stopped coloring my hair about 10 years ago. I have never regretted it. I have some silver at my temples, but very little throughout my whole head. The cost savings is substantial. I went through chemo/radiation in 2020. It grew back slowly and I have worn it super short ever since. I did have a wig in a short hair style, but it didn’t work well as I found it too warm.

I am no longer coloring my hair. I had strands of gray coming in so I thought highlights would be the answer. The bleach was so damaging to my hair it started breaking off like crazy. I have cut my hair shorter to cut as much of the damage off as possible. After 6 months my hair looks so much better and feels great. I will just gray naturally from this point on.
@StylebySheila

That's the other problem with changing the colour from dark to light, the bleach is very damaging.

Sheila… wishing you the best on your new hair adventures! (Yes, look at it that way 💇🏻‍♀️). It will be exciting, different and you may or may not like it. (You can always change it again differently🙂). For myself… I was a natural blonde, became hypothyroid and lost a lot of hair. Decided to dye it auburn and let it grow long. In our culture, we are judged on our age and looking older discriminated against. Oh I would prefer to think differently but have seen it over time, including during my own youth . So , I will keep warm long locks as long as I can. Suits my skin tone better I think. Best of luck to you and I hope your silver locks will look lovely on you. I bet they will. xo

I am naturally blonde and have never dyed my hair. I am nearly 62 and still my natural colour. I have very sensitive skin so would be very worried about dying my hair. No sign of white hair yet but I accept it can't go on like this forever. My friends say I am so lucky as dying their hair for years has cost them a fortune. I am so pale I worry how I will look with white hair but I have to accept I am old now.

Hello Sheila! I really appreciate the effort you made in this video. I agree with most of your ideas. I have to tell you, you have the most beautiful green eyes- they are unique! The rarest eye color. Anyways, I agree, black hair is not the right look. Go for a dark or medium brown. You will be surprised how much that warms and makes ladies look younger. I agree with black coats - just too stark. Go for navy, charcoal gray or camel - so warm. Also, a few years ago, there were pea coats that had peplum flare - they were so feminine and "hide" a tummy! I suspect they will be back. I agree with the 'young' styles on older women. Women get this false notion that if they were what 20 year olds are wearing - they will look twenty. No. Does not happen. The obvious contrast between older and younger person gets accentuated. However, you do not want to look frumpy, either.

I stopped coloring at 46. By then I had colored my hair gray (at least the upper part as it was in style and i wanted to try it)I liked it so much! However, since my hair is black getting my hair so light was damaging my hair. When it grew out I noticed I had a lot of grays (not so close together but like highlights) So, I decided to go natural. I did go shorter to get rid of the color I had on it before (was not gray at that time ... long story!) and since i already had about 3 inches of growth it didn't take that long to transition. Now, I'm almost 51 and I've been wearing my natural hair color for years. I get tons of compliments as so many people actually think my hair has been highlighted but i let them know right away that it's natural. I love my hair! I even wish I had more gray and less black. Go ahead and cut it short as the shorter it is the less time it will take and after that you can let it grow out.
@StylebySheila

I stopped dying my hair when I was 36 years old. I started with silver coming out when I was 18 years old. I dyed my should length hair auburn since I loved red hair. It was hard growing out my hair it looked awful. When it grew about 2 inches I got the rest shopped off. My husband at the time had dark brown hair past his shoulders, so we looked odd together. My husband hated my red hair and encouraged me to stop dying my hair and let it grow out silver. He didn’t have any gray hair at all so I was hesitant. I took the dive into my natural hair and I’m so glad I did. I get stopped all the time by both men and women stating how much they love my silver hair. I’m 67 now and continue to get compliments when I’m out and about.

I am glad you are ditching the toxic black hair dye. I agree, chemical hair dye is really bad for health. I am in my mid-forties and are letting my grey just grow into my auburn hair. I care about having hair now it is thinning, the color is irrelevant. My health is much more important than trying to chase youth.
