Hi Natalia, as an Italian I'd like to clarify a few things: Milan is not exactly the best place to learn about Italian culture, actually people live and think very differently there. Bureaucracy is a big problem here, I agree, jobs are also a big problem. Taxes are quite low if you think about it, you pay up to 40-50% when you earn quite a bit of money and only on certain amounts (so for example you pay 23% up to €15.000 and so on), that leaves you with a big salary. With regime forfettario, where you only pay 5%-15% of taxes, they are super low I think, and I agree the real problem is "fixed costs" you are going to sustain whether you earn €0 or €30.000 a year, I'm so mad about that! Food fascism is partly what makes the Italian cuisine the best in the world as we don't compromise our foods and really value our cuisine, recipes and ingredients. Yes we have some rules we follow and try to help other people understand them, as we would also respect other cuisines when visiting other countries, and don't get fooled by some Italians trying to be rude or dramatic about these rules: you can drink cappuccino any time of the day, we just think it doesn't go well with a main meal like pasta with tomato sauce! But you are free to eat whatever you want, just don't "demand" things like ketchup on pasta, you can do it at home, you can't expect a restaurant to serve you that, the same way we don't expect Japanese restaurants to give us Nutella with sushi just because we pay for it 😂 (some people think that if you pay you can do whatever you want, luckily it doesn't work like that when it comes to food in Italy and in other countries). What I don't like about Italy though, is that I can't find something different like an Indian restaurant unless I'm in big cities such as Milan or Rome. The things you say about relationships are not true: we make a distinction between friends and acquaintances, we call them amici and conoscenti, and if you only have small talks you are in the wrong group of people, all my friends talk a lot and deeply about any subject, and we are there for anyone in need of help! Gossip? Yes, a lot! Slow way of working it depends, the vast majority of people are overworking while getting underpaid, they are required to work fast and a lot, but sure there are very slow and inefficient people doing office jobs, posts and so on. We are behind other nations when it comes to technology, I agree, very annoying! Limited ideas about the world, not really, maybe old / ignorant people, Italians love other countries, we travel and work in other countries as well, especially people in Milan should generally be more open about other cultures (I certainly am and love other countries). In conclusion, it depends! Some things are also way worse here... unfortunately!

Hi Giulio, thank you for such a long and thoughtful comment. I still think that taxes in Italy are too crazy and don’t motivate people to bring investments here or do some good level business (that is beyond the amount that covers forfettario). Also for forfettario fixed costs are too bad, not motivating young people to try something on their own. In Russia for example it’s much easier with bureaucracy and taxes, they are much lower. You can also do everything yourself easily online without an army of commercialista needed to help you like it is in Italy if you want to do everything right😅 What comes to food - I really admire and respect the culture of Italian cuisine, I just don’t accept the judging people that want to put their nose in your plate and judge you for your choices. I met some like this here and I didn’t do anything crazy with the food, like for sure I won’t put ketchup on pasta😆 I shared my experience not only from living in Milan, I spend a lot of time also in the south in Calabria and I’m married to Italian so I’m often surrounded with Italian people from different places and regions, as well as when I was working in a company here. Just shared my own experience and impressions, for sure they are always very individual.

@@NataliaRomashko Hi Natalia, yes for sure the tax system is not good but I think if you earn enough (or a lot) is not that bad, as you said it's a real problem for those that want to start without a big amount of money to invest. Now you can use online services for accounting and someone will take care of all the bureaucracy for you, but bureaucracy here I agree is totally crazy, it gives me depression! Regarding food, yes some people are definitely "extra", some are trying to help and are really proud of their traditions so they want to explain and take care of you, some are just uncultured and don't know foods outside of Italy, but in the end you are totally free to do whatever you want here and if someone is rude let them know! They will hopefully understand and apologize. Cheers!

Recently I moved back to Italy, i found 4 jobs in 4 days in italy ,spoke about North Lombardia-Veneto area, so market is wealthy and healthy , there is lack of workers everywhere so is pretty easy sorted out a job, plus renew ID card can be done in a week online through log in with cie or spid, healthcare is universal free and open a bank account or see a doctor is ten time easier than the baltics that are doomed of this oligarchs so called digital nomad that kill the market. Food and tourism are the italian petrol.. tax system despite slow still works easy peasy if you are an employee so guess overall italy lifestyle and life expectancy is better than some slum in north europe.

yeah SICK of this "bureaucratic nightmare that is Italy" A well known respected publication rated bureaucracy by nation, Italy had a lower score i.e., LESS than US, Britain, Japan, Germany. Other ratings will vary but among all, Italy is no worse or possibly better than many 1st world countries. It's a stereotype. And the last person complaining should be anyone of her ethnicity.

As an Italian, unfortunately i must 100% agree with pretty much all you are saying ( something its actually worse.. ) .. A beautiful country, one of the most beautiful but full of ignorance, and too too many years of bad political choices.. we're really close to be a broke nation, and this is the reality of what's going on here since 15 years.

Thank you for your comment. It’s nice to know that it’s not just my subjective opinion but is more the reality that even Italians see. I’m sorry to tell it but I think it is already a broke nation😅 May be just a bit of the money of previous generations help but the fact is that many people even in their 30s can’t afford a basic living without the financial support of their parents what I find insane. I wish I knew a bit more about the situation when I decided to move here. Anyway, Italy is a beautiful country that has many advantages, unfortunately economy is not one of them😅😅😅But we will manage to thrive anyway If we put the effort💪🏻 The positive thing is that here are so many people are so lazy that if you are a bit more active and smart you already overcome a lot of competition😄

This is just a friendly suggestion: don’t you think the word “hate” might be a bit strong or emotive, especially when discussing countries or cultures? It can sometimes put viewers in a negative frame of mind. How about choosing a title like “Things to Be Aware of When Moving to Italy”? This approach aligns better with the advice you’re providing to those considering a move to Italy.

In Italy food is a religion, with very strict rules. No personal choice is accepted. I love sharing meals with friends, but when I am in Italy, I prefer eating alone, to avoid all possible discussions for such trivial topics that people should not be concerned about but instead they will focus all their attention on it even for days afterwards. If it weren't so widespread, to make it appear normal, it would be considered a psychological disorder.

I think it depends on where you live in Italy. You really have to love the country and accept the bad with the good. Italy is not for everyone. The USA is not for everyone. We also have high taxes and we are taxed on everything and the price gouging for basic items such as water, food and products is out of control. The middle class in the U.S. is much poorer and it is difficult to live comfortable. Many older Americans are leaving for the high cost of living. I have a home in Italy and plan to move there one day, but I would never move to the North of Italy because it's too similar to the U.S.

Hi, I agree that the bureaucracy is Italy’s worst nightmare, However, you are out of date. Today it is much worse, because you cannot send your documents by email nor post them, but you must be present to deliver them in person. But again, you cannot just go to the office and present them. That would be too simple. You must fix an appointment and that can take moths before you get an appointment. Then when you finally, go there, it’s just for a first appointment when you are told which documents you need. You must fix another appointment to present them. But to collect the various documents you must fix other appointments. Months go by. At last, you have collected all and present them. They say Oh that’s fine, but you will get the document after six months. Its’ not our fault but that is the time the printers take, and we cannot do anything about it. In Italy, it’s the printers that run everything. This is a true story of a person of British nationality that has been a resident in Italy since 1962. And needed an Identity Card, (Carta d’Identità)

For the most part I would say she is correct in my opinion, though I can't judge on things like gossip. I have lived in Germany for 30 years and, with the exception of bureaucracy, there are other problems here. I speak fairly good Italian and have visited there several times. What she describes about people in Italy being overly concerned about what you eat and the way you eat it is quite correct. It can actually happen that a waiter will simply refuse to serve you a cappuccino after lunchtime (unless you're in a very touristy restaurant). And don't ask for Parmesian cheese if your noodles contain fish. And never eat spaghetti with a fork and spoon. The list goes on and on... That would never, ever happen in Germany.

Some of what you're saying is true (like the part about taxes...), but it seems like you're referring to a specific region in Italy. Italian cuisine is rich with influences from other cultures, which is one of the reasons it's so exceptional. The tendency to judge harshly stems from the fact that, as you grow up, you develop a particular sensitivity to flavors and emotions, making you very selective. For other cultures, food might primarily be about satisfying hunger, but for Italians, it's a way to connect with emotions and experiences. It's your right to eat whatever you want, and I don't think anyone is going to stop you from doing so, but also be open to understanding Italian culture.

You seem to be educated enough to make sound decidions. In this case you have been superficial and naive. I happened to live in different countries for work and education. I had to do my homework and prepare my papers, certificates etc well in advance before leaving Italy according to the selected country. Then, once there, I had no problem and the transition was plain and simple.

I think you don’t consider that it also depends on your nationality and in which country you want to move. Looking at you name I guess that you are Italian and Italian passport gives advantages in many countries. I have Russian passport. In my case nothing could be made in advance, I came to Milan to study and once I finished masters here I just had to apply for jobs and also for the quote for foreign workers (I don’t know if you know that in Italy there is limited number of places reserved for foreign workers every year) and pray that I will get this quote. Because if you don’t get it, you need to wait one year to apply again and you need to leave the country. Luckily I got it the first time but anyway bureaucracy in Italy is terrible. So it depends a lot on each individual case, you can’t always prepare for it in advance.

What I hate in Italy? I learnt Latin for 7 years at school in Austria. When I went to Italy nobody spoke Latin there. Well, no big deal! I hadn't learned to order pasta or pizza in Latin anyway. And I wasn't in the mood anyway to lead a discussion with some Italian "de bello gallico".
@NataliaRomashko
@NataliaRomashko 6 дней назад
I must say that it’s not a valid reason for the hate as you just didn’t study well enough😅I also studied Latin in university in Russia but the first thing that our professor told us is that Latin is a dead language in sense that nobody speaks it now, it is used only in science and it’s a base of the languages of the Roman group so it helps to understand how these languages were formed. Of course Italians speak Italian and not Latin😄it’s a known fact

So, pasta is not an original Italian dish. The only original dish is LA PIZZA. So make sure that the italian know about this when they think that they have the best pasta in the world ! What a crap !
