7 THINGS THAT ARE NORMAL TO DANES BUT WOULD HORRIFY AMERICANS: The Weird Parts of Living in Denmark
#Denmark #Danmark #DanishCulture
This video talks about some fun things we have noticed as American expats living in Copenhagen. We take a deep dive into the things that are normal to Danes but would horrify Americans. Many things are normal in Denmark but weird in America, and they’re listed below and explained in much more detail in our video.
One thing that’s often shared about how crazy Denmark is compared to America is the fact that Danes leave their babies outside, even in the winter - it’s just part of Danish culture. Danes, quite reasonably, say that there is no sense waking a kid that is sleeping and their baby buggies are much too big for small boutiques. We have heard claims that leaving the baby outside is good for them! That the fresh air helps to improve their breathing?
It my be cliche to hear, but Danes and Europeans are so much more comfortable with sex and nudity than Americans. On TV, in radio shows and all over advertisements, sex and nudity is something that’s a part of life in Denmark that would shock American people. Danes are much more comfort with sex, it’s just treated as something that isn't taboo.
Swearing is very commonplace in Danish society but is considered taboo in American culture.
People in Denmark curse a lot, and it would shock many Americans to hear it so often. In fact, some foreigners may even consider it rude to hear harsh curse words in the office. We discuss it more in our video, 9 Things Danes Say to Foreigners That Sound Rude (but are totally harmless). You can watch it HERE via @RobeTrotting • 9 THINGS DANES SAY TO ...
Danish humor is definitely something that is totally normal in Denmark but would be weird and misunderstood in America. Danes are known for their humor to be sarcastic and sometimes ironic, they enjoy joking around at their own expense and the expense of others. Danish humor seems to be designed to keep people in line and also to make them a little bit uncomfortable. It’s a bit different than American humor which is more wordplay, puns, cutesy and designed not to offend.
One thing about Denmark that would be surprising to Americans is the comfort with divorce and single parenthood. Marriage is nice, but not considered as sacred and moral as it is in the United States. Even though the divorce rate is similar to the American divorce rate, divorce in Denmark is just considered part of life and not stigmatized.
One thing that’s normal in Denmark that would be horrifying in America is how much freedom and trust kids have. This is in small things like taking public transportation to visit a friend or their education system across the country emphasizing school skills at an early age. There is no American helicopter parent mentality when raising children in Denmark.
Learn more in this video from @TravelinYoung and their video dedicated to the topic: • Top 5 Adjustments as A...
Public Intoxication and drinking culture in Denmark is very different from drinking culture in the United States. Social acceptability, teen drinking in Denmark, and morality in America all cause a very different situation around drinking. It’s definitely a major thing that is normal in Denmark but would be horrifying in America.

** Leaving any child unattended, outside a shop or store, would freak me out. I mean I cannot fathom why anyone would do that, but, then again ... I am not a Dane, so. ** Divorces are common in Denmark, actually. They are handled with remarkable openness and candour. ** Danish humour tends to be gallows humour. ** Speaking of swearing, cursing in Polish (kurwa!) is very common in Poland. The running joke is that if you do not hear the words, "kurwa" or "cholodny" (hell or damn) then you likely are not hearing a true Pole speak. ** Nudity is NO BIGGIE in Europe. In Germany, they have nude parks, right out in the open. And, the media feature nude people as well. I like that attitude a lot more than Americans' prudishness. ** Alcoholism is quite common in Denmark. Open drinking is common. People are encouraged to drink, in fact. Public inebriation is not frowned upon.

Funny and true story: At the rehearsal dinner for the now Crown Prince Frederik and his Aussie wife, Mary, one of the speechmakers spoke about how to please your man, in the boudoir. What did she say? Welll .... she spoke enthusiastically about the joys of stimulating the anus with one's partner's fingers, that's what, and how each partner in the union should do THAT for each other. The Crown Prince Frederik was laughing so hard he was crying, whilst his Aussie wife winced. Aussies are pretty laid back folks but, even she was ... well ... a bit ... put off, hahaha.

Yeah, but not in the Puritan countries, the UK and USA. All the people that got kicked out/voluntary moved to the USA because their religious beliefs were, eh, weird. I mean, those Puritan values took a substantial hit on the amount of followers when the British kicked them out and moved to Amsterdam. Half moved to Leiden and the rest scattered. The next thing they did move to the America, the ship was the Mayflower...

I see lots of girls fully clothed getting sexualized by Danish men when you go out. You must live in Denmark from another reality? Also, I have many friends who complain about men they don't know at all grabbing/slapping them at certain places when we go out too. I live in the second biggest city btw. Totally not true

@@felix7062 It is true. As you said, those girls are fully clothed. It is the situation, not the level of nudity, that counts. That said, the grabbing/groping behaviour is an absolute disgrace. Go to a nude beach and see if you see the same behaviour - I bet you won't. So it is not a connection between sexualisation and nudity. Julie is right.

I remember an American journalist interviewing the Danish minister of tourism and he ask if it was appropriate for porn shops to show everything they have inside the shop in the store window where children walking by could see it all. The minister replied that there was no way children could see it. What do you mean, the journalist said, its right there in full view. I remember that case about the Danish woman in NY leaving her baby sleeping in the stroller outside the restaurant. Its not like the baby was unsupervised, she was sitting right inside the window, there was literally only a window pane between them. That is totally normal here in Denmark, and apparently she had not been in the US long enough to find out, how different it was there. It wasnt just, that it was found unacceptable, it was also, that instead of asking/telling her to bring her baby inside, nobody talked to her, they just called the cops on her. She got arrested and detained, and it took the Embassy 2 days, I think, to sort it out and get her released and get the Americans to give her back her baby. It was a real uproar here in Denmark, every1, I knew, were so shocked, how she was treated like a child abuser and hardened criminal for leaving her baby on the other side of the window, she was at.

Shes lucky when you're a poor American in the wrong state it is easier to become a foster parent for kids that have been shuffled around in the system than to get your own child back even if the child services mess up. About nudity, I just HAVE to tell you this true story. A family bought a fancy villa right on the beach north of CPH. They hadn't researched the neigbourghood propperly, as they were not aware that the beach in front of their new house actually is the local "nudist" beach. It's perfectly legal to go swimming naked at any beach, but each town has a stretch of beach, where the naked people hang out - it's just local knowledge. This "poor" family had a hard time excepting the locals went naked into the water, right in front of their house. So they put two signs up on the beach at the boundaries to "their" beach, saying something to the effect of: SWIMMING IN THE NUDE IS PROHIBITED. Big mistake: They got taken to court and fined DKK 10.000 for PULLUTING the beach with their ugly (and illegal) signs.

Many years ago my wife and I took our kids to visit California. We’re a Danish family. Our kids were quite young at the time... my daughter was around 5 and my son around 2 years old. While strolling up Rodeo Dr. in Hollywood my son got angry (for reasons only 2-year-olds would understand) and he just refused to walk any longer and sat down on the sidewalk outside the window of some fashion store. I pride myself for being a patient dad, so rather than picking him up and carrying him out of there, I told my wife and daughter to just go ahead and that we would catch up in a few minutes after my son had calmed down. So they did. My son was still hysterical on the sidewalk crying (probably over his dad not allowing him to get a third icecream). So I squatted next to him and comforted him explaining calmly that two icecreams were enough in one hour and basically just waited for him to get over his tantrim and for him to want to continue walking on his own two feet. After a few minutes he realised that this time around, crying wouldn’t win him an extra icecream, so he got up again and took my hand and we picked up the nice strolling down the street. In Denmark that would have been the end of the story. But apparently somebody had seen me talking to my crying 2-year-old kid and I assume that they must have thought that I was a kidnapper or something... Because after walking about 50 meters away from “the crime scene” a cop came racing on a bike and stopped me. I had to show him photos on my phone of my son Denmark and even then, the cop was still suspecious. Then I had to call my wife, who on the phone confirmed to the police officer, that it was indeed our child walking hand in hand with me on the street... I understand that it’s better to be safe than sorry, but I was truely shocked by the lack of trust. Both by the police officer and also by the people who had called him. This is a fundamental difference between American and Danish culture. And the Danish trust in one another is why kids can be left in strollers outside a boutique, because come on, who the hell is going to to steal a baby? The risk of that happening is SO little compared to all other risks in life. It’s way more dangerous to take your child on a ride in your car, but that will not get you in trouble with the US authorities.

It has probably more to do with you being a man. Sorry, not sorry. Men are simply questioned way more hightly when it comes to children because apparently you being alone with a child implies you want to harm them in some manner... Seriously. "Danish humor comes in one color: Dark!" that is very true. It reminds me of a story I hold very dear of my father. We've probably all tried at some point that somebody tell us the same joke time and time again, while not realizing it themselves. Like an oncle or something. So my father drove my mother crazy with the one about the doctor and the Chinese: The doctor says to his patient "I've been treating you for jaundice now for 25 years, and only NOW you tell me your Chinese!?!" (this was the 70's, so PC was somewhat different). He allegedly told her this joke a gazillion times, to the point of where ultimatums were given. Many years pass. My dad gets cancer, and gets very ill. Only a few days before his passing, lying in the hospital bed, barely able to speak he waves over my mom as best as he can. He gets her in real close and wispers "have I ever told you the one about the doctor and the Chinese?". The funny thing was that he had cancer of the liver, and was at this point himself completely yellow. Like, he was remoulade-yellow! Oh, the layers of ironi, and the light in that darkness - don't ever take yourself to seriously, not even on your own deathbed. My hero :-)

Yup@@RobeTrotting sex ed is important I think in school. I remember those classes was lots of fun, being called upon, with 2 other boys, to demonstrate how to put on a condom on a plastic penis in front of the whole class ( I am sure we were chosen because we usually made lots of noise in class and were being disruprive) But it is important for young people to learn about those things like condoms, the pill and STDs so they are prepared. Not sure how young people now become sexually active, but back when I was in school (I am in the mid 40s now) it wasnt unusual to have the first experience at 14 or 15, and at that age we, or at least I, didn't know all I needed to know that is for sure.

Another thing here is that we're not so incredibly... Selfish. In the US you'll always be seeing couples that split up where one party will want to take as much away from the other as possible, or get a larger part of custody etc. Child support for life based on the wealth you had at the moment of the divorce (and this rate will not change even if you end up homeless & broke) so on and so forth. Our system just isn't quite so... Horribly broken and capitalist as one would experience in the US.

A couple of points from a Dane: My parents divorce was the best thing that ever happened for me. And for both of them as well. I got lost all the time as a kid. Getting lost and figuring it out is one of the most important life skills there is. As one of my friends said: The kids will fall down at some point if I run after them or not... Language: Most of the simple and common Danish swear words suck and there are way fewer words in Danish than in English/American. You should thank Shakespeare for that. The weirdest thing in the world to me is how violence and fucked up shit are allowed in American movies and not swear words. And this relates to the sex thing as well. How is sex worse to see for kids than violence? I never had "a talk" with my parents. Because sex was around. It wasn't something you had to be told about or discover.
@Snarcksa
@Snarcksa 3 года назад
To add to this: Sex ed. is taught in every level of primary school, with the focus shifting from year to year so the kids (hopefully) are prepared for what's happening in their lives. Sex ed isn't a voluntary subject. It's mandated by law (Lov om Folkeskolen, §7)

I'm very grateful my parents divorced! I saw more of my father, and had a more profound relationship with him, than any of my piers. I don't share farher with my siblings, my kids don't share mother with their sister. My son's bonusmother (who's a divorced child) has a daughter . Two of my sisters have bonus-children - one sister is on her second batch. My nephew has remarried, and she brings two children to the table. Sounds complicated? My son is "pregnant" with a lovely girl, who's got several siblings, of whom she only shares both parents with one. She's got two bonusmothers. If any body has a problem, it's not us! Just imagine all the family, that's going to be at the christening! 5 Grandmothers (that is, if Gina can make it from Central America) Look upon it as a Nordic version of the big families from more south. Children simply can't have TOO many, who loves them.

Growing up I've had several situations where i was in danger but my parents taught me to be cautious and rightly so because it's surely saved my life on a few occasions.

I find that sleeping outside and merely sleeping in a cold room to be very different. There must be some physiological explanation, perhaps just that the air is constantly replaced outside and thus fresher. Babies aren’t just left in the cold wind of course, in fact they’d be tucked in well to not get cold, but it still works and then they can sleep outside pretty much all year round. 😂😂😂 as a Dane I completely agree on the most points. Makes me wanna share a absolute crazy story: As a baby my mom (of course) left me outside the store when grocery shopping. Nothing crazy about that in Danish standards at least. However, one day she forgot to pick me up again, and basically left me there. It was only when she came home and my older brother ask where I was, she realized that she had forgotten me in front of the store. So she ran back to get me, and I was - of course - still sleeping and did not notice anything even though I was left unattended for more than 1 hour. Yet another twist on the story was that the street she left me on was Istedgade, which probably is one of the worst streets in Copenhagen Crime wise. Anyway, nothing bad happened. And we laugh about it now. I most add that my mom is not proud of the mistake, but she continued to leave me out side to sleep.

Some nuance on divorces. The fact that Denmark has parental leave, kindergarten etc. means women are expected to eventually return to work even after they have kids and while we still have room for improvement in regards to gender equality (women also earn less in Denmark, than men on average), women are rarely financially dependent on their husbands, that means divorcing if a relationship isn't working anymore, is less stressful for both parties.
@omega1231
@omega1231 2 года назад
Except women don't earn less than men on average in Denmark, for the same job. Also, women don't choose a career path based on how much it pays, plenty of men do - if that alone was reversed then women would make more than men - it has nothing to do with equality, unless you think that having the freedom of choice is somehow inequality. Meaning, if you want to fix this, then you need to force women to choose career paths that make them more money, and that would be autocratic.

In the nurseries there are prams outside in the backyard under a roof where babies and toddlers sleep during the day, both summer and winter. The adults check on them once in a while while they sleep and they are of course dressed and covered according to the temperature. There are also skovbørnehaver that is kindergartens where children are outside in the forest everyday most of the year and some of them also during winter. I saw a video of an American I believe she was a teacher in a study trip long time ago who was flabbergasted by the degree of liberty the children had to climb trees, be around the fire and other "dangerous " activities. You should check that too.

Hej Lavina, that's really cool to learn about how outside sleeping is even a part of the nurseries. We'll look for the video - Americans definitely have a weird way of parenting and supervising children that borders on unhealthy. We pick up on the subtle difference just relaxing outside in a park or going for a walk and observing - it's neat to see parents let their child fall down, get up and keep running instead of the American way which is often to run over and make a big scene (usually scaring the child in the process).

When talking about parenting, I always grew up with my mum saying 'freedom under responsibility'. If I was responsible, I'd get to be free as a bird as I had proved I could handle it. As for climbing trees and being alone on playgrounds or throughout the city, that had never occurred to me that it isn't like that for every country? xD If I ever got hurt from falling out of a tree or getting smacked in the face with a swing on the playground, I dealt with it. Sure, it sucked to get hurt, but it was a part of teaching me as well. Maybe I shouldn't climb the tree so high, or I should've checked if the branch I was on was stable. Maybe I should've held on to something just in case it broke. You get to explore and figure out the world without being shielded from every little thing that might hurt you. Sometimes there's an adult with their own kid, but most of the time I remember I was alone with other kids. If something serious happened, usually one kid ran to the nearest house or to their home to fetch an adult who could help, but it was extremely rare for anything of that scale to happen at all - mostly a bit of bruising and scrapes, occasionally minor wounds but nothing that couldn't be fixed with a band-aid and a parent giving it a little healing kiss c: I was practically raised 'wild' in that sense: with my parents not hovering over me, but still being there for when I got home and had gotten hurt. I could always go home and cry if I needed to, and my parents made sure to raise me well enough to know that I wouldn't go with strangers. On that point, I never encountered anything like a stranger who tried to lure anyone - the only adults around had a kid there, and usually focused on their own kid unless another kid got injured. Usually, we didn't cry about small stuff, so if a kid cried it was usually because something REALLY hurt, even if it wasn't a serious injury c:

With regards to the babies left in buggies outside - this is pretty much harmless. In the US, some 150 kidnappings of children (anyone younger than 18) by strangers happen every year. A lot more go missing for a variety of reasons, including kidnappings by family members and family friends, but it's only about 150 a year out of a population of about 64 million children in the US. The vast majority of the children kidnapped are girls age 12 and up. In 2018, there were about 1,300 deaths due to SIDS, about 1,300 deaths due to unknown causes, and about 800 deaths due to accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed of children aged up to 1 years old. There are 22 times as many of these deaths as there are "actual" kidnappings every year. Unless you are constantly terrified that your child will die in its sleep, there is no reason for you to be terrified that your child will be kidnapped from a buggy outside a store.

Great content, guys, both this video and in general :-) We do have some taboo's, even though they are very few. One of our taboo's is about alcohol. I have never been drinking, and I've only tasted it a very few times, and it wasn't for me. So I've never been drunk or even close. And I've been pressured by a kind of "society shame" all my life (I'm soon 35), and there are still situations were people expect from preconception that I do drink, and when they realize that I'm actually not going to dring, no matter how many times they ask me, they stop talking to me... I hope that you like it here, as Denmark is amazing in almost all other areas, so it's nice to see you guys here :-)

The part about nudity reminded me of when I graduated from secondary education in 2015. We’ve got all sorts of wacky traditions surrounding our graduation caps - one of which happens to be going for a swim wearing only the cap. Anyway, one of the hallmarks of graduating from secondary education is renting a “studentervogn” (basically a party bus) and driving around to homes of all the students in the class. By the time we were driving around in the bus, several of the boys from my class had yet to take a dip only wearing their graduation caps, so when we made a stop close to Nyhavn they saw the opportunity to strip and jump in the harbour. Given that this was late June, the weather was nice, and that Nyhavn is usually a rather busy area, I’m pretty sure plenty of tourists had quite the experience that day.

I remember going to a festival called "langelands festival" which my all means is really kid friendly. Lot of activities for kids and even the posibility to get your kids watched while the parents went of to hear some music anyway there was a booth where you would pay something like 50 danish kroner to get scolded/yelled at. I remmeber the line being really long, so it just goes to show that danes enjoy our sarcastic and sometimes rude sense of humor so much that we actually pay to be yelled at.

An example of danish humor. My dad was somewhere int, where people were to introduce themselves. So many bragged.. "I have this big car", "big house, in this fancy area" etc. etc. When it was my dad's turn to introduce himself, he said "Hi, my name is... I have a MAJOR cold and ALOT of paper tissues in my pocket". Just to say "Who cares. I've heard what you have - but whom are you?".

Dane here. 🙋‍♂ About kids walking around unattended: Sure there is gonna be some bubblewrap-parents, but they're not nearly as abundent here in Denmark. Kids get taught how to take care of themselfs at a very young age, pretty much from when they can walk and talk. It also helps that the community is not nearly as dangerous as in America to be around (I have friends there and they tell me how rough it can get sometimes). 😉

There is a saying here in Denmark: "Den man tugter elsker man". Loosely translated it means "the one you tease you love" so, the more you tease another person the more you like that person. So yeah, dark and sarcastic humor CAN actually mean you like someone (it doesn't always mean that though which makes us Danes even harder to understand :)) Love the channel. I'am a danish father. My children are my everything. Me and my childrens mother used to leave the stroller outside with a sleeping child in it. As you said the community feeling is something that has to do with it being okay, but just the way danes look at life. A child is everything. To actually do anything to a sleeping child is direct evil. And thoose things dont come across our little nation very often. we have belief in our fellow danes. 13-year alcohol bans in the United States from 1920 to 33 still have their mark in the United States. It is therefore great that we Danes can enjoy a cold beer out in the open nature or in the cityscape without being punished by a police officer and American young people must know that it is legal in Denmark more than once. A free country can be seen from many points of view.

The Dillermand show and the educational show with nude adults are controversial in Denmark too, and sort of missed the mark in relation to it´s target group. Things are moving in a more prudish direction, and I think some TV producers are trying to push that back with shows like these. As a teacher I can see many school children reacting negatively to older educational materials, that contain more nudity than the newer ones.

One scorching summer I was smoking a big 'ol Joint at a bus stop (I'm done with that now) and some very noisy goth kids were hanging around the same spot, absolutely hammered, and I noticed an American family (mom, dad & two kids -very properly dressed but way too much clothes for that day) approaching just as I was exhaling a plume of thick smoke right in their general direction. The discomfort was almost palpable and I remember the woman asking her husband in disbelief "what is going on here!" The look on their faces were almost fearful and they huddled together. I wanted to tell them how this is not that unusual but I thought I should just let them take it in. I don't think they will ever forget that day.
