@@philippinefamilylifewithle2673 Regarding Briefs vs. Boxers: Doctors and Hygienists will tell patients to wear Boxers to allow that area of our bodies (both men AND women) to "breathe" fresh air to prevent us from getting yeast infections from "sweating" when wearing Briefs. It is best to wear nothing that encloses the groin area, but in society, we must cover up that part of our bodies. So, the best compromise is to cover ourselves by wearing Boxers, NOT Briefs. Another problem with Briefs is that the part around the legs is usually made of rubber covered with cloth. That causes further "sweating" and yeast grows that way, that is, warm, dark, and moist. Briefs are very bad for both men and women.

@@philippinefamilylifewithle2673 Regarding "Sleepers" (Slippers): Filipinas/os wear slippers or flipSlippers-flops or zories or rubber sandals to protect the bottom of their feet. Foreigners also wear those when in The Philippines. Why? Well, it is usually very warm in the P.I. so wearing leather shoes or sports shoes or tennis shoes or boots is not good for people's feet. Slippers or flip-flops are best for P.I. But in Western countries (USA, UK, Canada, Australia, NZ), it is not as warm. In fact, during winter time, warm boots are necessary because it is so cold from snow. So, Westerners do not wear flip-flops during the winter. Now, then, In MY home, I have always had a small bench to sit on next to the entrance door, so I can take off my shoes or boots, and then put on my "indoor house" slippers or flip-flops. That way, I wear indoor slippers inside my home and outdoor shoes outside my home. Another convenience in the P.I. is that, because the weather is so warm, slippers or flip-flops are worn and very easy to remove or put on again, unlike shoes or boots. Westerners are not used to removing shoes during summers and parts of spring and fall. For me, the reason for having slippers inside is so that I do not track dirt, mud, or other garbage into my home. And I only wear my slippers inside my home to keep them clean from bringing in outside dirt and grime.

@@philippinefamilylifewithle2673 Regarding Humor: Humor is based on the history and cultural differences within each culture. It is unique for each country or area of the world. It is also based on customs developed through holidays, types of food (locally grown vegetables, fruit, and animals), and the climate and geological surroundings. Folklore and fables add to our differing humor. When a man from one country marries a woman from another country, they have very different experiences during the previous growing years of their lives. Their schools were different; their religions may be different; and their holidays are probably different. All these differences create two very different people. Therefore, two such people must practice much patience and forgiveness when judging their partner. Instead, each should enjoy their partner's differences with a bit of humor that we do not understand our partner's humor, and find it amusing.

I wish. I can get up extra early but I have ADD pretty bad and can have to turn around and go back inside because I forgot my wallet, then set my keys down and forgot where when I was looking for my wallet. Then I remember that I was going to grab my camera and have to go back inside. Then I realize I forgot to get fuel before making it home last night. Try as I might, punctuality is a real struggle for me.

I finally got tired of my wife being late to everything that one year for Thanksgiving we were going to my brother's house. I kept telling her to get ready, and she kept ignoring me. I told her that we were leaving at a certain time, with or without her. That time came and our daughter and I left to go to my brothers and left her at home. I thought that might be a wake up call. Nope, she is still always late. Now I start telling her that we need to be someplace 1 hour before we need to actually be there.

I don’t wear shoes in the house because I married an Asian and it bothers her. At first I did it for her but now I see how much cleaner the house is and I no longer do it just for her, I do it for me too. When people visit I am the first to ask them to take off their shoes. I feel a little bad because I know how they think and feel but I don’t care about their feelings more than I care about not getting dirt from their shoes all over my house. Keep in mind, dirt on their shoes can be a mix of earth, dog poop, gum, dried sticky soda, etc. Our floors stay clean and I love it. So, I learned from Asian culture that the very small inconvenience of taking off shoes to go inside a house is worth the huge benefit in cleanliness.
@kasperkjrsgaard1447

In Northern Europe it’s concidered very normal to take of your shoes when entering somebodys house. Obviously I do the same in my own home.

I am willing to bet the majority of humans across the earth take off their shoes. Almost all Asian countries do, I believe most middle eastern countries do, and then quite a few European countries do. I think the countries that don’t are the exception to the rule. Once a person get used to it, it is a trivial thing to do and the benefits are significant.

Leah, about the slippers/shoes that are used from outside to inside the house. That is an easy solution. I live here in the USA but my whole family leaves our shoes/slippers at the front door or shoe rack at the front door inside the house. I’m making sure we don’t bring our shoes/slippers inside of the home, because shoes/slippers are dirty and steps everywhere. Solution is we have our inside slippers/sandals that is only used indoors.

Hi Leah. I found your topic fascinating since I am an American expat resident of Davao City living with my Filipina wife of almost three years. My wife lived in Australia for several years as a housekeeper. We have talked about your topic with each other on numerous occasions. We agree that when a foreigner seeks to marry a Filipina and a Filipina wants to marry an expat, both need to make an extra effort to understand the other to find a suitable middle ground when our backgrounds lead us in different ways in a situation. Let me begin with your example of time which assumes Filipinos run on Filipino time. For me, the matter is a pet peeve. Fortunately, my wife understands and recognizes, for example, that Filipinos do make every effort to get to church on time and not arrive until the offering is collected. (Humor!) The same is true with stores, businesses, and appointments with, say, the doctor. My wife is very cognizant that I am a punctual kind of person although not all Westerners are. She makes every effort to be on time when we need to be somewhere together. On the other hand, I do cut some slack with her when she is running late getting ready to leave to go somewhere which doesn't happen often. Patience is another matter. I have had to learn that in the Philippines it is most certainly a virtue although I was rather patient in the US except when driving and I am in a traffic jam. (More humor!) Now, I want to mention another matter that definitely bothers me about the Philippines. To be sure, I understand respect and the Filipino way of wanting to respect others, especially an older person as I am. I appreciate special lines (usually shorter) for "senior citizens." My concern, though, is the other side of the coin--consideration. Consideration is taking the other person into account when saying or doing something. How does what I do affect the other person, especially if what I do can have an adverse effect on others like playing loud music at night or cutting in line where a friend is standing. I find Filipinos are rather short on consideration in contrast to respect. As a religious and Christian nation, I would expect people in the Philippines to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. However, that often does not happen when people are inconsiderate. Thanks for listening,

Yes, your culture is much different than ours, but your video was on target . My Filipina wife was laughing at how accurately you described me. With punctuality we are taught from our earliest childhood both at home and at school the you are to be on time. I confess that I have no patience. Boxer shorts are supposedly healthy for you. When I first visited my wife in the Philippines and even still she is much more reserved than I am in public. I could go on but it was a great video.

Thank you for the amazing video. I’m learning so much that I wasn’t aware of between your culture and Western Culture. I’m traveling to the Philippines later this year, looking for somewhere to live. Travelled Thailand + Indonesia before. Dated local ladies while doing so. I love how kind hearted + considerate the SE Asians are. Very different here in Canada. My Reactions (39 white boy, Canada) to your surprises with Foreigners; 1. Boxers! Haha, yeah that’s a “Western Man” thing. I’ll look into what the local Men there wear…maybe I’ll prefer those to boxers! 😂🤷‍♂️ 2. Punctual. (Meaning we like to be On Time, or Early for most things). For us, it is a sign of Respect to show up when agreed. It show’s respect for the other person’s time. Waste of your own time to have to wait for someone too. Mutual respect is the reason. 3. Straight Forward. Canada is less than UK+ USA for that. We tend to put on “Nice” masks as a front to how we really feel. But UK + USA ppl really let you know what’s up. It can be refreshing, as there are no blurry mind games…but it can be quite Disruptive as well: so pro’s and con’s of that. 4. Passionate/Desire to please our lady. Haha yes, we do want our lady to enjoy the experience very much. We help each other become better lover’s by sharing what works good to please our ladies. 5. Rude Humour. Unfortunately that can happen when Sarcasm (popular type of humour in the West) is taken too far. My Mom’s side of the family uses very aggressive + sometimes mean humour. My Dad’s is gentle and light hearted humour. Sounds like that’s the type in the Philippines. Beautiful. 6. Not Caring what Strangers think of you. I believe you will find that trait in MOST Foreigners, as they have left their homeland for something different…which most of them will be judged and get flack from family + friends for doing so. So they already have that trait. IN Western Lands…most Men are quite weak + will do whatever “authority” + the “herd” will do. Most don’t have the balls to stand apart from the crowd. Covid made this very clear. So FOREIGNERS IN YOUR LAND have this trait, but it’s not common back in Foreigners homeland. 7. Outdoor shoes inside. That’s gross. Apparently lots of the USA population does that. Us Canadians, take off out shoes at the door, and have indoor shoes/slippers if wanted. Walking on THE STREETS picking up ALL the FILTH…and then walking that filth through out the house, is disgusting. Thank you once again.

Honesty is the best policy to avoid problems in the long run, which is important when dealing with yourself and friends and family and coworkers. It matters less when dealing with a stranger you'll never see again.

I take the middle ground with honesty. Using your example of dinner, I would thank my girlfriend for making dinner and I would comment about something that I liked about the meal--because there's usually some aspect of a dish that is a positive even if you don't like it--and I would take care of washing the dishes afterwards. And only then would I tell her that I didn't like it, and I would tell her that the only reason I was telling her is because I didn't want her to make it over and over again because she thought I loved it.

The fact of making statements without regard for others feeling is in part to do with a philosophical distinction between Individual and collectivist cultures or societies. The notion of free will is at the core to making statements pertaining to the individual's intentions and desires. So this is a culture shock that is not going to go away easily and may be a reason avoid the other. The time factor is to do with a 100 year tradition of school bells ringing 'on time' in 9am the 10am for little lunch and so on, so its really a childhood trauma from the 70's and 80's and not such an issue for latter generations.

A province girls sweetness! 👍Foreigners are different. British humor is special (watch the TV series Little Britain and you will be shocked) , as well as american humor. But there is also rare german humor and other culture humor. You have to try many men from all over the world to judge humor. Anyway humor is fun, dont take it serious!

How do filipinos meet anywhere if they dont know the time to meet? Like what happens if two Filipinos say "Lets meet at 3 o clock"? Does one turn up at 4 and the other at 5?

Underware: My Father was in WWII and fount in the Philippines, Okinawa & Japan. I forget what the reason was, but he claimed he he never wore underware again after the war. Humor: Humor is very local to time and place. I grew up in Pittsburgh PA and later moved to New York City NY. Humor was vey different in Pittsburgh than in New York City. In the USA we had national TV for many years that sort of made common humor across the USA. I married a woman from Jamaica West Indies and she and I had to learn each others humor.

Patience...I have almost none. Timeliness, is an essential element. I say we leave at 10:00, it does not matter if you are not ready at 10:00. I am leaving. You can come as you are, or stay behind.

I really enjoyed your observations of being married to a foreigner. I am soon to married to my beautiful Filipina of whom I dated for over 9 years. According to her, she is my queen and she always gets her way on every issue. 😂 Obviously I have no problem with that because we know each other very well. On the wearing slippers ib the house problem, here's how you train Gary NOT to wear slippers in the house. Say no more love making until you stop wearing your sliipers in the house Gary. Let me know how long it takes Gary to stop wearing slippers in the house. I'm guessing less than a week 😂😂 God bless you and Gary and I hope the two of you live long and happy lives.

As an American man speaking on the use of slippers or house shoes, a lot of it comes from personal experiences or preferences but as for me, I noticed that not all men’s feet are the same sensitive. I wear socks and slippers inside always because my feet are sensitive to what they touch. Like outside terrain can sometimes feel uncomfortable or slightly painful without shoes. I didn’t grow up going barefoot either.

A lot of western culture is centered around the clock, being on time a sign of respect and good upbringing. This seems to be from the industrial manufacturing phase of our history, where people worked set shifts in lighted building with the clock, not the sun, keeping track of time.. Soon our non-work time was also being scheduled on clock based factors. And we've been trapped in this clock controlled way of life ever since. Agriculture and hunting more follow the sun, not a clock, so time is more fluid than exact in cultures that still follow these historical norms. Most island communities I've been to follow the more fluid, less exact timing, for daily life. Some don't even name their streets or number their houses cause the locals know who and what is where without needing this extra labeling. And these Island locals with their more relaxed lifestyle seem happier and healthier then most westerners I know. So an agreed upon middle ground where time is concerned, may be the best of both worlds. Personally, since retiring, I've found I more naturally follow the sun in daily home life. Only check the clock for away from home scheduled events.

Leah, humor. A person had headaches so she went to a doctor. The doctor told her she had a brain tumor and that she needed an operation. After the operation, the doctor told her that he was mistaken about how much of her brain he had to take out. He had thought about 3 percent but because the tumor was so large, he had to take out 95 percent of her brain. The doctor didn't know if she could even understand what he was saying to her.she just said ," talaga!!"

At least in rural Oregon , forty years ago , boxers were hard to find and briefs were the standard. That has reversed over the last forty years. One factor was they were used by bullies in middle and high school ( I have heard junior and senior high school is the terms in the philippines)

Honesty and promptness are ways to show respect and appreciation. There are bad ways to tell someone that you don't like something that they are doing but there may not be a good way to say it sometimes. I like a lot of different types of food and another man may only like meat and potatoes. I might be shocked that someone doesn't enjoy my pig tails with sauerkraut and potatoes but I won't be offended because I know it's just a matter of preference. My cooking is always good. I could do all the cooking for the family if my wife is taking care of the house and dishes. As for laundry, I like to share that work with my wife. Not that I have one in my life.

What's strange about one of your items is that your husband wears slippers when walking around outside--I don't know anyone who does that. Most of us wear shoes outside and then change to slippers or barefoot when we come inside our home.

Boxer shorts vs. briefs...in America, briefs used to be more common in the past. But our men have discovered that boxers are less constrictive and uncomfortable, which is preferable. Imagine having sensitive internal organs on the outside of your body, and you'll understand why we don't want fabric pinching them. However, briefs can sometimes be better for athletes who want support during strenuous physical exertion, which prevents the testicles from banging around and becoming bruised.

I think we are patient, its not that we can't wait. Its just disrepectful if someone is not respecting your time. For example, if someone is making you wait for a long time, and its because they are not organised, it tells us they don't respect you enough to be ready on time. Also we get annoyed if the reason we are having to wait is because someone is doing something stupid, like waiting in line at an ATM while the person in front seems to be doing 100 transactions.... just get your money and go!

time is a precious commadity...and cannot afford to be wasted....and our word should be our bond...ny grandpa when he said he was going fishing and leaving at such a time would give you 10 minutes to show up if you were not there he left and you lost out...also the reason many men wear boxers is because it interferes less with a man unit down below in terms of what it does to their twig and berries...lol

Good video Leah, all true. You forgot about the toilet paper 😁 westerners are addicted to toilet paper 😂. In Australia here it’s mostly the younger men wearing the boxers with the Oder men preferring the briefs. Yes, even wearing shoes in the house is common here too. I think with humour, Filipinos struggle to get sarcasm which to them can come across as mean? Filipinos I think enjoy more straight forward slap stick comedy like Mr Bean etc.

Yup all 7 describe me to a T lol......Sorry, my feet are super sensitive now that I'm older, and I wear my flippers inside. Even the smallest grain of sand bothers me. As a kid I lived barefoot or in flip flops, now no way. My filipina has gotten used to my way, if I don't like what she cooks,it's ok I can cook for myself just fine, and do.......... I'm not a PDA type, not into holding hands, or kissing outside, not even as a teenager lol. And yeah I quit wearing ANY boxers, once I came here my first time in 2016 and got used to it.....Briefs at home in the US, called "tighty whiteys" lol my step dad wore those nasty things. I changed to boxers@ 12 years old, the "itlogs" need to breathe hahaha Good video Leah lol my filipina was laughing as well.
