Listen to music without headphones in public? That's just rude. I'm not even from Germany, but also not from America. But I think that's just rude..
@yorunox

I wouldn't perceive it as rude, its rather annoying but still a very impolite, bad-mannered and ill-bred behaviour imho :/. Even worse when kids do it in the U-Bahn or bus..

I visited Cambodia and found it was completely normal for people to listen to music without headphones. I thought that was strange as hell, but I guess different cultures have varying levels of tolerance to some behaviours. it's pretty cool to study actually

Rebekka Kunz She did say a lot of people are tourist and they forget our drift in that direction. So if the light was green, and there were absolutely no cars in sight, do you still wait for the red? Traffic rule, yes, but that'd just be plain silly.
@paigey-poo4235
@paigey-poo4235 6 лет назад
Well I m an, it’s one thing on a road, but on a walking trail through a park I’ve never seen a bike lane. That’s just not something we have in America, at least anywhere I’ve been. You just have to not run into people. And on roads where there are bike lanes they are separated from sidewalks very distinctly.
@andro7862
@andro7862 8 лет назад
I don't uderstand why are americans so obsessed with wearing shoes in their houses. Imagine walking over a muddy field and then walking in muddy shoes all over the carpet and be content with the cleaness of your home. It just doesn't make sense why make it more dirty when you already have to clean it.

@jirkenz1312

+Andro A Well, for one; we're not usually tracing around in muddy fields. Most homes in the U.S. have hardwood floors. But newsflash, most Americans expect guests to take their shoes off. If you live in a bustling city, ain't nobody got time for that shit.
@TheAdaaamski
@TheAdaaamski 8 лет назад
I'm from the UK and I don't mind wearing shoes indoors if i'm going back outside again soon but if i'm in for a while then I take them off. If you are just going inside for 5 minutes then taking your shoes off just seems like a nuisance to me.
@andro7862
@andro7862 8 лет назад
Jirkenz131 Still I mean the outside is dirty, in many ways, 93% of shoes have fecal matter on them in small parts. It's just I don't get it, you use clean slippers in the house so you could live in a clean home, I also have hardwood floors, but I clean them and use slippers. If food fell on my floor you could eat it perfectly fine. I doubt anybody likes walking on particles of feces barefoot, I aslo do that sometimes in the morning. People do have time to take off their shoes, it takes literaly 2 seconds xD

Well, I'm from Canada and in my country 1. It is frowned upon to stand in the way of bike traffic 2. It is illegal to bike on the wrong side of the road 3. Apartment complexes often have rules about grilling on balconies 4. It is considered rude to track dirt through someone's house with your shoes 5. We tend to wish happy birthdays on birthdays 6. Crossing the street when cars have the right of way is generally a bad idea 7. People get annoyed when you are loud and obnoxious in a crowded, public place. What a weird coincidence. Who could have known that these two countries would have similar social guidelines? Especially when the guidelines are so illogical and counterintuitive? Wow.

Greg Rice for the reason she won't stop at the red traffic light I guess. I sadly don't understand how and why Americans act like they do.
@nikole9784
@nikole9784 6 лет назад
Because, coming from an American perspective, Americans tend to not pay that much attention toon ad worry more about themselves than other people or what the rules are. I live across from our elementary school and we walk to school. We ALWAYS cross in the cross walk but 95% of the drivers completely disregard the laws regarding crosswalks. I always have to wait even though as a pedestrian I have the right of way. And I’ve almost been run over many times because even when I’m in the road people don’t care. Where they’re going is more important 🤷🏼‍♀️
@ahndre7
@ahndre7 6 лет назад
Because bike lane barely exists except European countries. Specialy Germany is a heaven for bikers:)
@theragingplatypus4743
@theragingplatypus4743 6 лет назад
Because it's there. Because people make mistakes. Because toddlers dart around. Because you're foreign and don't even know it's a bike lane. Because you have to cross it to get to the sidewalk. Because there's intrinsically no difference in many places between the sidewalk and bike lane except for a slightly different color that is so dirty that you don't even notice. Because the side walk is poorly constructed and you don't want to walk through a puddle. I'll give you a story. We were moving. My father-in-law wrecked the car. I was pulling suitcases and stuff from the wrecked car to our car figuring out what we needed immediately. A woman bìtched at me for being in the bike lane.
@haibeasley2679
@haibeasley2679 5 лет назад
greg rice bc in America there’s not side walks everywhere or bike lanes tbh but if there is a bike lane there’s usually not a side walk most people ride there bikes on the same roads as the cars and most people jay walk so roads or anywhere 😂

In Germany we usually don't do the typical US barbecue thing with lots of steaks, meat and so on. I'd say it depends on people's preferences. Most of the time, there's a lot of sausage, some sort of steaks from pork or beef, marinated chicken breast, fish, vegetables and also veggy sausages. And what is absolutely nice to grill is watermelon - try it! I think what marks out German grilling is our variety of food and eagerness to experiment.

Dan Pals Yeah, maybe in another country taking shoes off it's not common, you're right. But, things like not walking in red is globally know, isn't it? I'm not saying that everyone or every country needs to follow the instructions, even less follow the "traditions" in Germany, each one has their special thing, and of course i'm aware of it. I was only saying what I thought about the video and that maybe there are more rare things to explain than, for example that thing of crossing in red.♡ Btw, I know this is not from the theme, but I would love to visit one day Florida, any recommendations? DO NEVER generalize Germany, especially if you're in Baravia/Munich. It has a lot of own history and customs which don't belong to the rest of the country. That "no grilling on the balcony" makes total sense. We once lived in a larger apartment house, and two floors below, there were people grilling almost every weekend. The problem was, right above the spot where they had the grill was our bedroom window, which we like to leave ajar in the summer when it's hot. Due to the chimney effect, we had the damn smoke in our bedroom every time. We even asked them to just give us a short notice when they intended to grill, so that we at least could close the window. The morons did not do that one single time, so we had to try to sleep in a smoke chamber almost every week.

My daughter is currently in Germany on an exchange student program and being that she’s 16 and it’s her first time away from home and in another country she’s had some issues assimilating to the German ‘attitude’. I’ve been sending her a lot of links to your videos. I hope she finds them useful. Also, I live in California and I use to work in property management and many of our rental contracts prohibit grilling on the balcony or patios and if it is permitted you’re only allowed to use a very small grill. 🙂

Don´t be to proud, neither of your self nor of your country. Yes, sure, if you worked hard and accomplished something great, you may get your 10seconds of honor but don´t show it to much in public. Not with your car, not with your appearence - the envy is strong in this country! Greetings!

You forgot an important point, in Germany it's considered disrepectful to address an adult person you aren't related or friend with with "du", we have a second personal pronoun ("Sie") that is basically used everywhere in business and even for teachers in school etc. Personally I don't like that but that's how it works in Germany. In English it's a lot easier, I know there are similar forms of address in other language but afaik it's nowhere as strict as in Germany.

It depends on where you live. In Alaska everyone takes them off because of the gravel. It destroys the carpet. In Colorado, I've only been asked twice to take them off. No one takes off their shoes unless it is their home. It's actually considered rude to take them off because it's too personal and smelly. I hate wearing shoes and would love to take them off anywhere but it is considered in bad taste for the most part unless they have white carpet they are protecting. Which was the case the only times I was asked to take them off.

The reason why people don´t talk on their phone in the U-Bahn is not only because they don´t want to be loud, but that the radio network often doesn´t work well under ground. So it often happens, that you don´t hear what the other person on the phone is saying or that the conection is cut... And most people in the U-Bahn are on their way to work/school or on their way home after a stressfull day and just want to relax =)

Roronoa Zoro Yes, especially when there are kids around. Imagine you're parent and trying to teach your children when it's time to wait and when it's time to walk, and there are ignorants that just don't care. Of course, teaching that the world is bad and that there are many stupid or bad people in the world also is kind of an important lesson, but it's much more complicated to break to someone gently. And it has a negative touch, so you might want to skip that lesson for the time being. In think that being able to change perspective is an important competence as a traffic participant in general :)

Marybeth Langendorf No you may not get hit, but I'm sure the driver WANTS to hit you. US pedestrians have become so entitled to the "pedestrians have the right of way" they rarely adhere to their own responsibilities as pedestrians: cross the street IN THE CROSSWALK, not wherever is convenient; cross when the traffic light is green; don't assume the driver can see you.

We are from South Africa and currently in Germany on holiday. Something we noticed is that people here are allowed to bring their dogs almost anywhere (museums, restaurants, trains etc.). This is something that is very different to our country, dogs are generally not allowed in most places. Even most of our beaches are no dog zones (there are only a few special beaches where owners may take their dogs along). I asked a local German about this and his answer was just classic: "Well, here dogs are for cuddling, I suspect in South Africa you use them for a different reason." So true! They need to stay home to alert the neighbours if there's a break in! 😂 Okay, I'm generalising, but still! We are VERY impressed with how well behaved the dogs are here. We wish it were the same in SA!

Well, that may be fact in Munich, but not in the rest of Germany. ^^ I live in the so called 'Ruhrpott' and people here are completely different and much more relaxed. The only thing I agree to is not to wish someone a happy birthday before the birthday starts because it will bring you bad luck. Well.. and the red light thing. A friend from the UK always laughs because most Germans wait at the red lights. :)

+supahtyp - There is a difference between common sense and common custom. In America, it is perfectly fine to wish someone a Happy Birthday prior to their actual birthday. Coming to a culture where this is not viewed the same way and saying it without knowing better doesn't mean common sense. The term "Common Sense" means that everyone should just have it regardless of their culture or background. There are any examples of differences but I don't view them as being right or wrong...just what is accepted by that culture as normal. For instance, I lived in Germany for many years and I originally thought Germans were rude. When I passed someone walking on the street I would say hello or a greeting....I would get stares and no acknowledgement. I soon learned after speaking to my landlord (who was a German Burgmeister) that Germans simply don't normally greet or speak with random strangers like Americans do...and that is why I got such odd looks. Only when I started understanding culture did I realize Germans are not so rude as I originally thought...it's just the culture. Saying Happy Birthday, speaking loudly, etc are things that are commonly accepted in many places in the world, USA included. So people who do this aren't stupid...just from a different culture. BTW...I do agree that staying out of the bike lane should be common sense...agree with you there. Also, here in America, many people remove shoes inside. When I visit someone, I watch what the host does. If I come in and see a big pile of shoes near the door and the host does not have shoes on...then I remove mine. If I come in and the host is wearing his or her shoes inside, I leave mine on. When in Rome...you know?

common sense got rare in the USA sadly.... with all that transgender stuff and people that want Hillary Clinton as president... We're all doomed if that's the way we'll go

This pretty much goes to the many Europe countries. We in Europe do not bring dog poo to the living room with our shoes, we leave shoes at the door and use slippers to keep home clean.

The concept of personal liberty is REALLY big here, often considered more important than social harmony. So in large part, it is because in the USA it is viewed as more rude to force others to inhibit their own speech and activities then it is rude to make noise. IMO, anyway.

The bike lanes thing is very true. My husband and I visit Germany once a year or so and he always forgets and walks in the bike lanes. I am constantly reminding him to get out of the bike lane. I think it's because where we live (Scotland) our bike lanes are all on the road alongside the cars rather than on the pavement where pedestrians walk so it's easy to forget. Again also agree with the crossing on a red light. We done it once in Berlin and got into trouble so we now wait for the green man. It's not something we really do over here unless we are out with children then we do wait for the green man. Something we do in Scotland that I think most people might not know. At the start of a new year the first person to enter your house (called the first footer) should have dark hair and bring something into the house. Traditionally it was a lump of coal but some food is ok. It's bad luck for the first footer to have blonde or red hair or to come in empty handed. I think it's a tradition that is slowly dying out but many people still keep up with this tradition.
