Solar By Green Greg: 7 Things You Must Know Before Buying a Pool Heater
Is your pool too cold? Are you, like the woman in the clip, alone in your pool because none of your family wants to join you due to the chilly water? Or maybe you don't even use your pool at all because it's too cold. If so, your pool is a total waste of money! You're paying for maintenance, but no one is enjoying it.
Let's talk about the seven things you must know before buying a pool heater: seven factors that affect pool temperature and cost.
1. What's the perfect pool temperature?
In general, it ranges from 75 to 86°F, depending on your climate and personal preferences. In Florida, most people like it around 82-85°F, while cooler climates like New York State prefer 75-79°F.
Unsure of your ideal temperature?
Stick your hand in the pool. Is it too cold? Note the temperature on a thermometer. You now know you need a hotter temperature.
Fill two buckets, one with lukewarm water and another with hot water. Mix them until you find a comfortable temperature, then check the thermometer. This gives you a rough idea of your preferred range (4-5°F).
2. How long is your swim season?
Central Florida enjoys a 10-month pool season, while colder climates like New York have only 5-6 months. This affects the type and cost of the heater you need.
3. Local weather and non-heated pool temperature:
Use a weather graph to understand your area's temperatures. Even warm afternoons might not be enough to heat your pool, especially for larger pools (8,000-15,000 gallons). This is why many pools get cold at night and early mornings.
4. Is your pool shaded, screened, or in a windy area?
These factors contribute to pool temperature loss and influence the type and cost of your heater.
5. Will you use a pool cover or solar rings?
These help retain heat and make your pool warmer (I have another video dedicated to this).
6. Gallons and surface area of the pool:
Larger pools require more powerful and expensive heaters.
7. Cost to heat a pool:
This includes equipment, installation, energy costs, maintenance, and the desired temperature increase. Choosing the wrong heater based on cost can lead to an underused pool, defeating the purpose of having a heater.
In video #2, I'll delve deeper into:
The lowest cost way to heat a pool
Comparing pros and cons of different types of pool heaters
Determining pool heating costs based on specific factors

Hi Greg. I moved into a house that has solar panels for the pool. The solar has not been turned on in about a year, I have been told. I would like to turn it on (open the valve). The pool guy said it can't be turned on becuase the water will be all black because the solar hasn't been turned on. Is this true and if it is turned on after a period of not being used, is that anything I can do? Please advise. Thank you.

If It is an actual Solar Pool heater panel system you should not have black water ... Black water is problem when people use a black rubber hose as a pool heater. A Year is not that long being off ...

@@lindagacsko I would turn it on and use solar .... If you have a temp controller Pentair Solar Touch I have a video on that .. if it does not have a temp controller you will need to daily manually open valves when its warm out and close valves before temp cools off ... depending on month may something like 11am -2 pm solar open in winter. sping 10--3 thanks
