There’s definitely a lot of variation in how hard off-trail hiking is. Most popular “off trail” stuff will be following old trails/forest roads for some parts of the hike. You’re also normally starting or ending from established trails. I’d say the hardest form of off-trail hiking is establishing routes. It’s not that hard to follow old maps or posted directions/GPX tracks. The people who are finding those paths are the true Ph.Ds of hiking IMO!

I would actually disagree on buying an ultralight backpack first at least depending on the pack. Traditional packs major advantage are that they have lifting and frame tech in them to help you carry more weight comfortably. Ultralight packs often do not have this or it is less effective. It is enough if your entire gear setup is already ultralight but if you are kind of in that in between stage and still have some weight in your bag you might benefit more from a slightly heavier more traditional pack that makes carrying the extra weight more pleasant.
@kdboyle7673
@kdboyle7673 2 месяца назад
Totally agree with this assessment- have a UL and as an older hiker switching to a trad pack. Heavier but will be more comfortable & less stress with gear and supplies for a week
@jsweevil
@jsweevil 2 месяца назад
I bought a ULA Catalyst so that it still has an internal frame to help with this mainly because I need my hips to carry some of the weight due to an injury to my back years ago in an auto accident. It works well enough so that all if the weight is not on my shoulders.
@jyc313
@jyc313 25 дней назад
Agreed. Most would benefit from a pack that’s heavier but has better load support systems. Until one becomes more adept at managing base weight and additional needs (food, clothing etc) going UL may backfire. Plus, most beginners start off bringing way more than needed (I did too!). And there aren’t a ton of affordable true UL packs with enough support to handle 30 ish lbs.

Sitting on something that’s not a canoe seat at the end of the day is a wonderful experience and for me personally my canoe tracks better in the water when I have significant weight in it and I have less free board. I grow my base weight by ~9x when I go canoeing. Everything changes of course with rapids or big portages.

Funny about the liquor suggestion, I take a little brandy with me, really helps winding down after a hard hike/if it's raining...and tastes good in hot chocolate!

Pretty funny episode, really enjoyed it, but your advice about looking to others for inspiration but not comparison is spot on. So much about backpacking is unique to each individual and you just have to get out there and figure out what works for you.

Baker and Kyle bring an hour of shenanigans. Love it. For Baker's discussion, here is a take: High school: Day hikes Professional certificate in a discipline: Overnight hike Associate degree: Weekend trip Bachelor's degree: Multi-day short or long hike Master's degree: Thru hike Doctoral degree: Multiple thru hikes Post graduate/professional development, classes, training: Extreme challenges like Barkley Marathons, Mt. Everest/Mt. Kilimanjaro, Eco Challenge, etc.
@michaelkaiser85

Kilimanjaro shouldn't be mentioned next to Everest it's not a technical mountain... Everest is technical mountaineering on it's easiest route require ice axes, rope work etc. Kilimanjaro on its most popular route is literally a hike no axes or ropes needed...

I’ve been listening to your podcast for a long time (five stars!) and finally got it through my head that you also have a RU-vid channel devoted to your podcasts. I’ll have to give fentanyl a try on my next hike. I think someone slipped me Trank on my CT through hike which explains my slow pace. But seriously: I am a bidet enthusiast. Even if you don’t rely on it completely, it really cuts down the amount of TP you need, and it reduces the smear factor considerably. I’ll carry a bidet (but no fentanyl) on my JMT thru hike in August.
@CuteBirdAwarenessLeague
@CuteBirdAwarenessLeague 6 дней назад
Black tar heroin is actually the best bang for your buck per gram. If you’re on a budget fent will probably be a good lightweight substance to pack. But for a better high be sure to get the quality stuff. Make sure at least one of your friends carries narcan, for if you go too hard on the partying, which can make their pack a little heavier though. The good thing about carrying an opioid is that you don’t have to worry about a pillow or sleeping pad because you’ll be sleeping standing up leaning over.
@jsweevil
@jsweevil 2 месяца назад
The best bang for your buck is to bring Everclear. Everclear can be used for cooking food, sterilizing your titanium spoon after using it to dig a cat hole, use it on cuts to sterilize wounds, or as a "nip". What's better than something you can use for multiple purposes for ultralight?

If we had zero weight burden: An electronic cooler, better food or even just a big bad of potatoes, a griddle or big skillet, larger amounts water and a shower 😅, or for me personally camera gear. I have not through hiked yet, so that would maybe change my perspective. We have backpacked into The Bob Marshall Wilderness stayed 8 days, living off what we brought and could fish. Used to be annually. As we live roughly 60 miles from Canadian border in NWMontana. The most beautiful area of the state, by GNP. Anyways, best I could think up with the experience I have. Cheers! Thank you for the fun podcasts. 😁

Oof, I hate Frog Toggs' backpacking line. Have tried them 3 times and never had one last more than a month. Meanwhile I've taken my Marmot Essence hiking around the world for the past 7 years to include a blizzard in Iceland, fat drop showers in Peru, drenching rains in Scotland on the WHW, and beyond. Have had to do a DWR refresh once so far but that's literally the only problem.

I have grown up with the definition of the term "nip": According to the Collins dictionary, a Nip is a small amount of a strong alcoholic drink" I would say a nip is anything under about 50ml, 1.6 fluid ounces or so. It may also be a superficial bite. I don't know what you mate thinks it is, maybe he's a bit odd?😉

Alright just to clear this educational thing up a little: At least here in Europe/Germany „postdoc“ is not a degree. After your PHD you could write a „habilitation“ wich in theory allows you to work as a genuin professor. (I know that this term is used completely different in the US). You could have a position as a professor without a habil, but then it’s called „Verwaltungsprofessur“ wich means that you are some kind of admin but you’re not allowed to hold lectures. On the other hand, the habil doesn’t make you a professor by itself, but you can call yourself private teacher. Becoming a genuin professor requires to hold a lecture in front of a committee and being elected afterwards by other professors, admins and a couple of students alike.

Thanks for the video Kyle. If you are open to constructive criticism then consider not spending the first 4 minutes of the video promoting your channel (like, subscribe and share) before you move on to the subject of the video. This is your channel and you can do whatever you want but I value my time and I can do what I want too. Spending my time watching what is essentially a 4 minute long commercial is not something that I enjoy. Best wishes & good luck !

Dude. I canoe camp a lot. It’s one small step below car camping. I take everything. 48qt cooler, ice, all the alcohol, too much food, 5 gallons of water just for me, ancient 3 burner Coleman camp stove, a big pot, usually two cast iron pans, absolutely I bring a camp chair. Go nuts. Unless you are in a kayak with limited space take all the luxuries. But I do have a canoe designed for that kind of load.
