Hi Dan! Just want to say how much I've been enjoying your lessons and videos. They've really been of great help in leveling up my playing. I had a suggestion for a lesson. I'm relatively new to bass and I play in a cover band at work. One thing I've been struggling to grasp is bass tone. Whether it's listening for tone in different records and how to replicate it between the knobs on my bass and the knobs on the amps. It can be confusing and overwhelming. As I move through songs in our setlist it'd be great to know how to adjust tone for different songs simply and quickly for playing live and in rehearsals. Right now I just stick with one setting for all the songs and I'd love to dial that in for better effect and sound.

I'm not Dan, but would like to offer some help in the meantime: Tone is a marriage in physics between set-up, technique, and equipment. You can do a lot with just your fingers with one setting, tone-wise, depending on whereabouts you pluck (or pick, or slap) the strings. playing softer, nearer the fingerboard will produce a warmer, boomier tone. Harder, nearer the fingerboard will produce both more percussive fundamentals but with deeper body. Playing nearer the bridge produces tighter, narrower sounding notes. There's a lot to experiment with just from varying your touch and hand position. Similarly, if your bass has 2 pickups, the nearest to the neck will produce deeper, wider sounds, while bridge pickups with be narrower, and tighter. The specifics of your onboard bass controls (eq, active / passive), and what kind of preamp / amp and cab set up you're running makes things a bit more nuanced. I'd start with hand positioning, and plucking technique first with a fairly flat setting on all controls to get you as close as possible to your desired sound, and then cut or boost controls to taste. If the part played feels more comfortable plucking somewhere in the middle but has a rounder, warm tone (e.g Motown), roll off the treble / tone a bit (usually better to slightly cut frequencies initially than boost so you've got more headroom without farting out).

What if you can't do OFPF? My wrist will not bend perpendicular to the fretboard, so I have to move my hand down to perform an exercise like that.

That's absolutely fine. If you need to shift and move around more in order to play those same notes then just do that....

Nice suggestions! Would playing intervals of a scale up and down the fretboard work? Thanks.👍
