Wow, it looks like all these incredibly positive comments go on for miles! And after watching this, I understand why ... you're a fantastic teacher and know how to explain difficult concepts with great clarity. About the only thing I could add is that with no music background I purchased my first dobro at age 70. It's been challenging, but now at 75 I'm able to play about 15 or 20 tunes. But I could never understand much theory or the Circle of 5ths. Finally this weekend I just decided that I had to somehow figure it out if I wanted to advance much further. I accidentally stumbled onto your site and it was eye-opening. I've been glued to my screen watching and taking notes. Thank you so much!!! I've watched two of your circle videos so far, and can't wait to get into minor keys, diatonic chords, etc. You've helped me rediscover the magic of playing music! Thank you so much!!!!!!

This, like your other videos, is extremely helpful. I'm in my 13th month of learning guitar and music theory, as a hobby, being an adult with a family, job, mortgage, etc. Just a few days ago I attempted to write a chord progression of my own. I did it by ear trying to find chords and rhythm that sounded good. Though I did lean on what little I know of theory. I did find something I really liked. And I now practice it daily. It turns out I used tension and release, and shared adjacent keys in my short composition without knowing it. Now I know why it sounds good and is enjoyable to listen to. Thanks again for your excellent teaching methods from one of your Patreons.

Nice video... I've always used the circle of 5ths purely for jazz. Here's a tidbit to add to that... if you are going down a fifth, flatten the 7th, which creates the fourth of the scale of the next key a fifth down. Oppositely, going up a fifth, you sharpen the fourth to get the 7th of the next key up. I really like the key change usage, especially for a complex tune. Thanks!

Gracie, here’s another cool way to use the circle of fifths. If you pick a note, look at its Dominant and Subdominant, then find the relative minors of these notes, it gives you the most likely modulations to be found in the tonal schemes for music written in the Baroque and Classical periods. It works like DNA, a relatively simple language which opens up practically infinite scope for exploration- simply wonderful!

Can you please repeat, in layman’s language.
@mksounds6326
@mksounds6326 3 года назад
@@dougmoran3340 The "Dominant" is the 5th note of a scale, or five notes above the tonic (starting note of a scale). The "Sub Dominant" is the 4th note of a scale, or four notes above the tonic (starting note of a scale). It's called "Sub Dominant" because if you count backwards or down from the tonic the sub dominant is five notes down from the tonic. Basically, when you hear somebody say Dominant in music think 5. "Relative minor" means the minor scale that uses the same notes as the minor scale. For example, the A major scale has its 7 notes; A-B-C#-D-E-F#-G# (then back to A). F# minor scale (Aeolian) uses the exact same notes, it just starts on the F# not A. That means that F# is the "relative minor" of A because they use the same notes. Basically, if you know the A major scale, you know F# minor. And here's one that will blow your mind; if you know the major scale and what the intervals are (the spacing between the notes), you can play every scale out there since they are all based off the major scale intervals. You forced me to sit down and work out which keys are Impossible Keys which provided me a much more complete picture of what the Circle of Fifths means - especially the enharmonic keys at the bottom of the Circle. I used Excel to type out all the sequences. I was in denial those bottom three keys even existed but now I am so empowered(!) There is hope!. Three major adds I came to realize is that C has both C# and Cb keys (so C either has no accidentals, or all of them(!)), no other "letter" has both, as soon as I see seven sharps or seven flats I know they are those very same C# and Cb keys, and there are six kinda easy to remember Impossible Keys A#, B#, (skip C per earlier comment), D#, E#, Fb (just to try to trip you up), and G#. Gracie, you do a great job educating us 'wanna be' musicians on music theory. The one thing I would suggest is that you slow down the speed at which you present your information. This will give us some time to digest the information you are presenting as you go along. Keep up the great work!!

I love these very concise videos. Thank you for all the very helpful info - and for not having an annoying intro on each video. I’d love to see a video where you play and share your mental process as you go along. Great work!

When you explain the complimentary relationships vs those that are not when opposed. it always helps to use songs everybody knows to illustrate the point! That's how teachers set concepts into concrete. It takes those on the edge of grasping the concepts to ringing the bell! Just a suggestion that might help you be able to set your teachings in a higher percentage of the students tuning in! Otherwise, carry on. Always a pleasure!

You are such a good Teacher **ich bin ganz hin und weg** it's extremely easy to follow you, the learning-entrance it wide, wide open. Excellent! When teaching theoriy-stuff it is very helpful to weave in examples in between, as you did in this video with the uke.

Light bulb moment as I watched your video - I can use the circle to figure out the chords for a typical 145 blues progression. 1 step counter clock wise for 4 chord and 1 step clockwise for the 5 chord! Love these moments! Thanks very much for your lessons

Thank you for this video! One comment, though: The reason why F in C major is called the subdominant is that it is a fifth below the tonic, hence the circle of fifths, not that it is a step below the dominant. Here is a citation from Scribd: In music, the subdominant is the technical name for the fourth tonal degree of the diatonic scale. It is so called because it is the same distance "below" the tonic as the dominant is above the tonic - in other words, the tonic is the dominant of the subdominant. [2] It also happens to be the note immediately"below" the dominant.

The Nashville system makes this so much easier to understand or better to say use much simpler but you are so much more sophisticated

This is impressive. This video has really filled in some blanks for me. I truly think you're a great teacher of music theory and deserve attention over anyone else on RU-vid; much more so than one guy I've watched and listened to before who only specializes in music theory, but yet you're more accurate and better at it than he is. Happy Xmas!

I just bought my upgraded Yamaha, a P45, and it arrived yesterday. So I needed to brush up on my piano lesson that I learned when I was 7 years old. Im almost 70 now. I learned piano the classic or solfeo way. This is totally Greek to me. But at 70 I have learned the great benefit of humility and just enough self-confidence that makes me aspire for more wisdom and knowledge. Ive naturally never learned about the Circle of 5th and 4th, even when I studied piano for 8 years until I entered college and my medical-related profession got the upper hand and piano time could not even compete with my attention span. But with the new Keyboard Im determined to start from scratch. I am still completely confused about the whole Circle. Just bits and pieces of understanding but I still cant connect the dots. Maybe with time my brain might catch on. Who knows I might have an epiphany. My new Yamaha might help make that happen. Thanks for this lesson anyhow.

Have you got it down after 7 months? It took a concentrated effort on my part to understand it, but I've finally reached the point where it's totally clear. If you have any questions, I'd be glad to help answer them, as a keyboard player myself.

@@abc456f Nope! I did try. But hopeless for me. You cant teach old dogs new tricks and that's me. LOL! I took whatever music books I kept all these years and resurrected them. I have one modern pop music book for the 70s to 90s contemporary songs and an old music book with all my classic pieces I learned from yester years. Im currently mastering three songs, Moonlight Sonata, Just the Way You Are, Prelude in E Minor. I start with songs I generally enjoy to listen to keep the motivation up but actually I just play these to restart my piano fingering up to par and revive my old pattern of not looking at my fingers again. Oh my! this is like starting from scratch. But its ok, Im retired and its one of my hobbies I believe is just as good as playing word puzzle for my brain health. Thanks for your helpful response.

I feel like learning music is alot like trying to find the right moment to pull out into fast moving rush hour traffic! Or like yur trying to jump on a train going in a circle that has no beginning and no end! Lol! Everything is so tied together. Watching this video I'm thinking back to a couple of the popular chord progressions I learned while taking lessons as a kid.. progressions to this day still so engrained into me. But literally each chord I've spent years feeling so limited to are deeply connected to many other avenues! I've often thought of myself as not a beginner guitarist because I've played for so long... but have a healthy humbleness to refuse to even consider myself as "intermediate" either.. 😆 I love the fact she has linked various topics to other videos she has made... then says to stop and go watch it if you don't understand. Well I did watch some of them other videos... and I'm still just as lost! Lol! I'm exaggerating! Ha! I think as soon as I get home tonight I'm gonna pick up my guitar and play out the 1-4-5 of each key! Then try throwing in those minors! This is super interesting! :) I'm certain I've played this while learning songs over the years... just never understood why or how those chords fit into this musical theory!
