She is a very good tutor for sure. I know a fair amount of music theory but I must say I started to break the rules almost right away when I was a rock guitarist. The whole idea was NOT to always follow the rules, and catch cliches before they became song parts. But actually Gracie is explaining the “Western” way of musical systems so that you have at least a template for having a song written pleasing to “Western” ways. Just one more thing, I’ll be gone; many great musicians would try to recreate sounds in nature, even industrial noises., or WW 2 sounds. Anything you hear is a note or whatever.

@@GracieTerzian I assume that the reason the I, ii, iii, IV, V, vi, vii^0 chord progression "sounds" similar to the diatonic key is is derived from is due the chord sound like the root note it's made of? That is, there is a kind of interval formula for the chord progression that "resembles" the diatonic key it is derived from?

Oh have to take a break too much info...how to know the major scales ? By memory? In order to move forward?
@GracieTerzian
@GracieTerzian 3 года назад
Haha information overload!!! It's good to take breaks and not overwhelm yourself. So, ultimately yes, you want to have your major scales memorized. This takes time and lots of repetition. HOWEVER, you don't need to memorize every single major scale at once. You can start with just one or two major scales. Start with the easier ones like C major, F major, or G major. Then move on to D major and A major. etc... Don't let the feeling of "oh goodness, how will I ever memorize all of these?" overwhelm you. I remember feeling that way when I first started learning music. First off, you don't need to have every major scale memorized at first to play. You can first spend time playing music in simpler keys such as C major, F major, G major, D major, A major, etc. There is no need to be playing a song in a crazy key like C# major or Cb major when you first begin working on this stuff. But I do believe that having a grasp of your major scales/keys will really make a lot of other things in music theory begin to make more sense. It's the foundation for so much. In order to figure out the notes in a major scale, you can always google search what they are (hahaha), or you can count up in whole and half steps in the pattern WWHWWWH. OR you can start figuring out the notes in major scales using the circle of fifths which is what I recommend using. That is what helped me begin to memorize my major scales. For instance, if you can't remember what the sharps and flats are in the scale, you can draw out the circle of fifths (or even better: try to visualize it in your head by memory) and figure out what the sharps and flats are in the scale. I have a video about how to create the circle of 5ths that you can check out in my music theory video playlist. I hope this helps!!
