Somehow, over the past 5 years, I've been able to avoid nearly every single disastrous videogame disappointment like Anthem, Fallout 76, Cyberpunk, Halo Infinite, and plenty others. This video explores how I was able to do that.

One of the biggest red flags for me is when a developer says they're going "back to their roots." It's a marketing term meant to trick the fans into thinking a dev is going to recapture their glory days, when in reality they have no interest in bringing back old school mechanics and the like.

@peanutgallery4

So them saying they're going back to their roots is a signal that they aren't. I would much rather go with the argument that "going back to our roots" betrays a lack of any strong vision for the game and only wanting to turn back to something that worked before

Doom 2016 really was an exception for these rules, this video made me realize just how much of a miracle it was. It was in development hell for 8 years, key leadership left and was replaced, they eventually restarted from scratch with a promise to "take the series back to its roots", and were not at all confident in the game all the way up to release to the point where they even withheld review copies. All the signs were pointing to it being an abysmall failure, but it ended up being universally loved and basically ushering in a whole new fps renaissance.

Kudos to Hello Games for redeeming themselves but in the long run its still bad from a game preservation stand point. Games that are released broken, buggy, incomplete, etc, etc that require day one patches and what not will be horrible for the games longevity. Imagine 10yrs from now you are at a retro video game store wanting to pick up an old Xbox One to play the games you remember playing years ago and you get it home to find out the game is practically impossible to play or is missing massive amounts of content because you're unable to update the game with all the patches, dlc, etc. So many games nowadays suffer from this and in the future you won't be able to come back to these games because they'll just be a complete mess to play.

@@-KillaWatt- 7th gen consoles (ie X360 and PS3) are the last consoles where you could expect to have a playable game inside a physical medium, and even then you are probably missing decently sized patches. 8th gen consoles might as well be digital only, and 9th gen consoles basically are digital only. That is part of why I moved to PC: if I'm going to get games digitally, I'd rather have them on a free account linked to a continuously evolving platform rather than be locked to a vendor and to a specific piece of hardware.

My video game red flags are: - being overhyped (just like I had no interest in cp2077 until patch 1.5) - focusing on graphics instead of gameplay (probably just a polished crap with no good story) - battle pass (just self-explanatory) - releasing new game from old franchise (never went good) - revolutionary mechanics (about 10% are really good games, but most just don't work as intended)

I would add massive advertising budgets to the list. They often use aggressive advertising when they know a gaming isn't going to meet expectations in hopes the preorders and day one sales will make them a profit before word gets out. Starfield, for me, has crashed all of one time since launch (about 80hr of play) and the only bugs I've had that impacted my gameplay in any meaningful way were 1. NPCs parking in tight spaces where I can't move past them (unfortunately a regular occurrence), and 2. trying to talk to someone when I'm too close to objects and the dialogue cut scene points me at a wall (happened once). Bugs have been SUPREMELY LESS than I think anyone expected in a Bethesda game. That said, the system requirements were also lowballed and my 2yr old (top of the line at the time) PC can barely handle the game on medium and it runs HOT (like 85-95C) and I can only play for a couple hours before it's throttling down. Absurd that a two year old system can't run this game at the very least on medium with no issues at all. If anything, they oversold us on how many people should be able to play the game without upgrades (SSD notwithstanding). I bought oodles of merch and decor for streaming... and I can't even stream and play at the same time. So until I can upgrade (just bought my wife a new computer so it'll be a while), that is cash sitting on a shelf waiting to be useful in the future after I spend a bunch more cash. >_

The problem with the "pivot" tell is that it isn't enough to know if the developer is changing the kind of game they make. You need to know who works at the developer. The people who worked at BioWare during KOTOR and the first two Mass Effect games have largely moved on to other studios or companies. Respawn hired a ton of people between TItanfall 2 and Apex Legends and Jedi Fallen Order. Pivots work when the makeup of a studio has changed or adapted to meet the demand. And even games that should be within a studio's wheelhouse sometimes don't work (e.g. Mass Effect Andromeda, Battlefield V/Battlefield 2042) when the studio isn't comprised of the same talent that used to be there.

I think the 1st point is less about developers being not in their "field" and more about why they decided to switch genres - is it because they have a really cool idea that would fit well with mechanics they worked on prior, or is because they just want to capitalize on success of some of the popular games in the same genre? In case on Hello Games, I don't think they were trying to capitalize on anything, it was simply overhyped and the idea, while cool, didn't really work well on it's own, but when they added more features it became very fun to play

I honestly like the way Nintendo does their marketing, previews, and trailers for their games. Most of the time, those trailers are all in game footage taken and edited into their trailers, hardly do they ever do CGI trailers; and in most cases they only release information about their games once they're in a state of quality that Nintendo finds appropriate. 8 times out of 10, Nintendo makes sure their big projects are at a high quality standard before being shipped, especially if it's their respective IPs. I hardly ever get hyped for games anymore, unless it is by a developer that I've purchased their games multiple times, like Platinum Games, Monolith Soft, Supergiant Games, etc. Where their titles may be a bit more niche, but they do hold a higher standard of quality for their games. I've learned from over the years, hyping a game up is just setting oneself for failure, because to a degree that game won't live up to those expectations; unless the game itself, from the developer/publisher, is claiming they will be(which is just false marketing and lying to the face of the consumer). In terms of Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, I don't think it's a bad thing that the game is aiming to hit that itch that Jet Set Radio left. Many fans were disappointed that it never got a sequel or any kind of official remake/remaster(I think it hasn't at least). So this is practically, "Fine, I'll do it myself!". As long as the game doesn't cost an arm and a leg, and is like Jet Set Radio in spirit, but polished and fun with support from the devs; I think that's absolutely fine. Though, I do wish the art style was a bit more...less blocky like, and could go closer to like we've seen Hi-Fi Rush did; though I'm sure it's an stylistic choice by them, of course.

It's educated but still a guess. If in doubt, wait it out. A couple weeks is good too see how players actually review the game (cuz the critics these days are mostly awful).

@@RealHaydo Get what you're trying to say,but not always the case.Yes having a delay or two is fine,but multiple ones pass that point usually mean that here are serious development/management problems with the game and if it comes out at all,it's likely to be a mess. This is one of the situations where more delays aren't necessarily good for the game.

Yeah most of this video is taking games that might've not lived up to expectations and just blindly shitting on them without doing any research. Like with the no man's sky example he brought up, he completely ignored to bring up the fact the developers have fixed the game and added a ton of free dlc into the game and stuff like that
@umamifan
@umamifan 9 месяцев назад
@@louiepikmin3184 Well yeah, the point of the video isn't to take into consideration the present state of games that had bad releases. It's to tell when a game is GONNA release in a bad state. It doesn't matter if those games redeem themselves, that's not the point. Doesn't matter if it becomes fixed later on. The entire vid is about the "warning signs" that point towards a game that's gonna release in poor shape. How do people not realize this?

It's sad that you failed to mention how playtonic later redeemed themselves with yooka laylee and the impossible lair, which is an amazing tribute to donkey kong country that is also able to set itself appart. That game really needs more recognition. Also while i do understand your scepticism for bomb rush cyberfunk, team reptile has had an amazing track record, lethal league blaze is probably one of my favorite fighting games ever made, and it has become one of the very few online games i play regularly because of how sound the fighting mechanics are and how well the jail with the aesthetics, with brilliant character designs and music. I have faith on them, since so far they have not failed at making a good game.
@thelastgogeta
@thelastgogeta Год назад
Also, I'm not sure there is any overlap between the staff of Bomb Rush and Jet Set besides having Naganuma. It is a coin flip if a studio with key staff from the original series recreates lightning (Bayonetta) or ends up with a dud (Mighty No 9). If anything, there is more cause for concern from how Yooka Laylee was a very ambitious concept for a kickstarter and Mighty No 9 promising a billion platforms and focusing on merch over getting a core concept in line. Yooka Laylee was more marketable as Banjo successor but it would have been more practical to start with the 2D game, though I'm sure there is some learning which came from YL. MN9 was already one of the more simpler MM concepts to work from but Battle Network would have had potential as a template, Red Ash (Legends) was not the pick even if we got a can kicking demo and anime out of it. Not before MN9 proved itself either.

Good video. I have gotten good at noticing red flags for hyoed games. Last couple of years have been amazing for me as a single player games guy. The success of ELDEN RING is probably the biggest milestone for the VG industry in over a decade. This year so far we have already gotten RE4R and TOTK, and next month comes FF16 which I am optimistic about it (I learnt my lesson with FF15 tho, never overhype a game).

"did not appear to have a troubled development" The cracks showed mostly the year before it was released. Firstly it was delayed several times, then reports came out saying that the workers had been mistreated, then it was delayed "indefinitely" citing stuff like Covid for the reason. Then the game's plot was leaked which caused a massive amount of controversy but also led to the game being released about a month or two later.

For clarity, Star Citizen did not have "a huge chunk of the project scrapped, forcing them to start over". They did have some rough time adjusting the CryEngine to their development needs in their early days, but no part of the project has been scrapped and started over again.
