What tools do you wish you bought sooner?

The Makita track saw I bought two days ago and is arriving tomorrow! Woohooooo, someone will be playing this weekend.
@Saileahgaz

I just invested in a Festool TS55 and the parallel guide system made by TSO. It hurt the bank account to be sure. But... I test cut around the perimeter of a 3 inch thick torsion box at full cut depth (2 inches and change), rotating 90 degrees clockwise (referencing the freshly cut side each time). I expected the 30X40 rectangular box to be out of square at least a bit, but after measuring across diagonals, I literally couldn't discern any variation using a metric measuring tape. The cut quality was fantastic with no burning, and no score marks from the blade teeth anywhere along the cut. I think the TSO kit works with the Makita also. What a joy to use!

1. Dowelmax - I love this thing. Speed, accuracy, strong joints. Having this turned a domino from an "actively saving for" tool to a "maybe one day, nice to have but no rush" tool. 2. Tracksaw - Accuracy when I'm not in my shop, and honestly, bringing the saw to the workpiece has been a major plus for me. I have the festool ts 55 f. It works great with my ct midi. 3. Dust extractor - festool ct midi i. I love this thing. Bluetooth is a gamechanger. 4. Festool ETS EC 150/5 - I sold all my other power sanders for this. Smooth, aggressive, little to no vibration, lightweight, amazing dust collection paired with the ct midi. 5. Mitutoyo digital calipers - After using cheap sets for years, I splurged on the chemical resistant (mainly because of the color...) mitutoyos and couldn't be happier. I zeroed them once since I got them and they stay zeroed, meaning they close to zero every time with no variation. Amazingly smooth sliding, and battery life is literally measured in years. 6. Not strictly a tool to buy, but switching almost completely to metric has made my projects much easier to wrap my head around. No fractions or decimals, just whole number mm, with the very occasional 1/2mm if absolutely necessary; 99% of the time, whole mm is just fine. 7. This ties into the others, but the festool system in general. Used alone, they're very good tools. Used within the festool system, they're simply amazing. I'm building my mft shortly using a parf guide mk 2, and I'm sure the mft will be on this list as well. Great video, thanks for posting!

I 100% agree with both the Wixey planer gauge and the Makita track saw! ... Have them both and they are two tools that really made a difference in my small shop! ... I've been eying the Bosch GET75-6N sander (and also the 5" version) ..... and I was wanting a drum sander 'til I heard some of your issues with them in the last video, going to have to investigate more or maybe just try to Mathias Wandel myself one together! .. You’re right on the money with some sort of dust extraction. I don’t mind (& regularly do) sweeping sawdust & debris, but dust extraction is a game-changer for sanding & the track saw - I see you MDF & laminate. And, yes, I too wish I would have purchased a track saw sooner.

A Festool track saw was definitely one of those aha moments for me. I struggled with clamping straight edges and using circular saws. Always cumbersome, taking time, not always producing good cuts. Also tried Kregs track saw jig to be used with any circular saw. That purchase pushed me to the Festool TSC55. Going from a regret purchase to an absolute must have in my workshop.

Great list! I installed a Wixey DRO on my table saw, and it has been great! It was expensive though, so I am not sure I would make the purchase again. I regret not investing in a nice blade for my table saw and radial arm saw- I would just pick up whatever was on sale for years and complain about them going dull too quickly. #1 on the Milwaukee installation tool. I wasn’t so sure about it before purchasing it because it looked a little weird and awkward and didn’t know if it was powerful enough but after owning it for over a year or so it’s my favorite drill/driver. I own a home repair business and this one can handle over 90% of tasks I do. Paired with a m12 Surge 99%. The only thing I don’t like is the location of the fwd reverse switch.

Get a Festool first choice or Milwaukee second choice. The Makita does not have a riving knife. If all you will do with the track saw is cut down sheet goods, get a battery powered model. I have the TS 75 Festool and it is a little heavy and the cord will always get in the way. By the way FYI the Festool Milwaukee and Makita and Powertec tracks are interchangable WITH the saw not with other tools like the Festool jigsaw.

Couple of cheaper items that i cannot (now) be without. CA glue. I hummed and hawed about buying it. I`m cheap and wondered if it would really be all that. It is. I use it every day it seems. Also a set of set up blocks. Same thing. I use them ALL the time. Most recently I invested in 3 bessey parallel clamps that i had resisted buying for years because they are not cheap. My current cheapo garage sale pipe clamps got the job done, I thought. They have improved and de stressed my glue ups SO much that i will certainly be buying more in the future. I went with large ones this time as you can do short glue ups with long clamps but you can`t do long glue ups with short clamps but i do more short glues than long. Great video thanks for posting

A track saw is no longer considered option IMHO. It's a tool that belongs in every shop. My daughter set up my husband's new track saw for an emergency job while he was out of town. Within an hour she was making the most precise cuts I've ever seen in my life. She's more accurate with that track saw that my husband ever got, even after decades of using a table saw. I'm talking dead on, cut after cut, every time. Not even a fraction of a millimeter off. She could direct that blade down a pencil line so perfectly that every trace of the line was gone. If she wanted to cut to one side, there'd be zero visible wood on the cutoff beside the pencil line. And she got FAST with that thing. She'd trot out to the shop to make a cut and be back in a few minutes later with the piece. To get that kind of accuracy with the table saw it would've involved some fiddling and a miter gauge to make it that perfect.

@02:14 Fastcap tape measures. I bought a few of them, they are the best thing I bought recently. Fractions on the tape saves me a ton of time. My favorite buy last year was the Dewalt 735. I can see the the Wixey in my future though. Why? I just built a walnut table (around 160 board foot worth of walnut at 18-22$ usd a board foot - air dried and kiln dried, so that was a premium) and I had to run 10' boards through. It was actually several 8' 2" boards at 8/4+ and a few 10' boards. Running one, then the other, then the other, then the other on each half crank of wheel over and over again to creep up on my final dimension (i'd take like a 1/16" off over the course of 3 days before letting it sit for 2 or 3 days) got really tiresome. ESPECIALLY when you forget one, then have to go "Crap, ok, let's mark the gauge and hope I can sneak up on it". Just remembering all that just sold me on the wixey haha. *Shudders*. Subbed!

Well I certainly have to agree on the cabinet hardware jig. There are many many knock offs and from a brief review they do look the same as the True Position one but doing ONE test reveals how inaccurate the knock offs really are. I bought a cheap one and all you have to do is extend the adjustable position guides to the end of the main horizontal body ruler then hook the top guide over a board and see the difference between one end of the ruler and the other end. I found these were consistently off by as much as 3/16 at least. That is pretty noticeable over a span of 15 or so inches. Not sure the True Position is worth the $300 and I have not done a side by side comparison but if it is not within a 16th of an inch from one extreme end to the other then there is not much point in relying on these jigs. Perhaps do a side by side if you have time. The miter corner clamps look great but are difficult to get here in Canada for some reason. They are sold by O'Skool and up here on Amazon they are $165. But in the USA they are $72. NO idea why the huge price difference since O'Skool does sell other items on Amazon here in Canada. But the list is solid and whole heartedly agree on the Makita track saw even if it has no riving knife.

I have a love hate relationship with the Wixey. It's great when it works but I've had tons of issues with it that I can only guess is caused by the vibration causing the batteries to come loose. Omg you were doing a lot of sanding without the extractor? That is like death. I'm really happy you got that one. It's definitely #1 for me. Thanks for the video, the tape trick is awesome. I’m ordering some now and will use a board like suggested. My planers depth gauge is dead on. I set it to the depth I want and it stops on the exact depth. I believe you can adjust them, though I do see where a the gauge could be useful on an off thickness. I built a home made dust collector and it worked great at first but it seems to be slowing down lately. I was thinking about buying a new one but have a question. I noticed a 4” hose to your planer, is that hooked to a different collector. I ask because I want to know if that small collector can keep up with a planer. Thanks again.
@EverydayBuilds
@EverydayBuilds Год назад
You’re welcome! The sticky sandpaper is a great inexpensive trick. As far as my dust collection goes, I have 2HP Jet dust collector that goes to all my larger tools (table saw, jointer, planer). A dust extractor (like the Dewalt) would not do well with larger tools like a planer. I use my Dewalt dust extractor for smaller tools, like my miter saw, sanders, and routers. Hope that helps 👍

Great list! I'd love to get a track saw, only I can't justify the price of the Makita ($479) since I'm only a beginner hobbyist. The adhesive-backed sandpaper on a clamped board is a brilliant idea. I'll definitely be stealing that one.

I have the Wen track saw, and it does great. And, won't break the bank. I got the Power-Tec tracks instead of Wen's, because they were longer, and work with the Wen.

@@asbrand how are the 45 degree cuts with the wen? One review said it has too much play and won't cut accurately but everybody that has one loves it
@asbrand
@asbrand Год назад
@@johnnycorn7225 - Never tried a 45° with it. I figured that's what the table saw is for. :) I just use the track saw to break down the sheet goods into manageable sizes.

What is the hose/fitting/reducer whatever you have with the sanding setup? I can never find a light, flexible host for my DeWalt ROS, and I can never find a good fitting. I wish someone made a knockoff Festool braided hose, they look so perfect in how it bends.
@EverydayBuilds
@EverydayBuilds Год назад
Dewalt makes a universal hose adapter called the DWV9000. It accepts different end adapters. The one you saw in the video is the DWV9120 rubber adapter. Hope that helps 👍

How does a proper dust extractor differ from a traditional shop-vac? Thanks, Tony.
@EverydayBuilds
@EverydayBuilds Год назад
The main thing is that a proper dust extractor typically has a HEPA filter. Which allows it collect fine dust particles better. And some added bonuses are they are quieter, have an auto on/off plug, better suction and most also have speed control (good for sanding). Hope that helps 👍
@chrisprice2200
@chrisprice2200 Год назад
When mentioning duct extractor, is that a certain type of vacuum, or simply a quality shop vac?
@EverydayBuilds
@EverydayBuilds Год назад
It is a specific type of vacuum. Dust extractors do a much better job of filtering fine dust particles. And they are typically much quieter 👍

That's funny because the one tool I didn't think I'd need was a track saw but sooner enough I drank the Kool-Aid.......and I was right I rarely use it for actual woodworking although I between the slabs I process and those I process for others it has paid for itself....Well I bought a Wen with a Makita track.....there ain't enough work in the world to justify a Festool ha ha ha

I'm getting a tracksaw soon. I'm leaning towards Kreg. As dumb as it sounds, I want the blade on the left side of the grip, like almost all circular saws are. For some reason, every other tracks tracksaw is on the other side. Why is that?

The deWalt planner is a at best a hobby planner way underpowered the knives wear excessively. I switched several years ago from an older 2 knive to the deWalt and shortly thereafter I wished I hadn’t I plane rough band saw juniper semi-dry which the rigid whistled thru I’ve search for an old rigid 2 knife but always a minute late it seems

You are edge sanding with the orbital wrong. By sanding in the middle of the pad, you are not getting any action at the centre of the sander. You should be sanding in the first third of the disk. You'll also get better results if you lay the piece down and hold the sander vertically to edge sand.
@EverydayBuilds

Either way, it’s not great, lol. But thank you for the tips 🤙
