Cool-light bulbs drive me INSANE. I've seen my fair share of homes with the light temperatures mixed within the same space and I keep thinking, "How are you not noticing this?!" Of course I would never actually say anything... but I want to. So bad.
@brooke3312
@brooke3312 Год назад
Interesting I’m the same as you, but the opposite- I hate warm lighting and prefer cool lighting. Everywhere I live I have to switch it all to bright light. It keeps me more alert. I also don’t like it when people have mismatched lighting tones. Or goodness gracious…not enough bright lighting…it’s a pet peeve to play cards or a board game at a dining table that is sooo low lit. I can see but at the same time I feel like I can’t see if you get what I mean.

I also need much light, but warm (not too warm, but not cold - it's hard to find the right). Or darkness. :D But I can't stand when my boyfriend just turns on one cool direct light over his head and sits there, other parts of the room are dark... 😱

Measuring is so important! If I forget my measuring tape I use a dollar. It’s 6 inches long. I agree completely with warm lightbulbs. We have LED that switch in the kitchen/dining because for prep and cleaning I love that hospital light. Then we swap to warm to eat by because it’s so friendly and cozy.
@kkilljoy3588
@kkilljoy3588 Год назад
That’s genius. I never knew a dollar was 6” long. I feel like some sort of secret wisdom has been handed down to me today. I learned long ago which part of my thumb is exactly 1” and I remeasure it somewhat regularly to ensure it hasn’t changed so I can use that as a guideline for small measures. But $1 = 6” is going to come in soooo handy! I can’t use my thumb for 2’! (I’m stupidly excited about going out and needing to measure something unexpectedly…even though I also try to carry a measuring tape for good…uh…measure 😆)

I think the whole warm white trend has gone overboard. Like in my Home country 4000K light is called "cool light" when in reality it is more close to neutral. My bathroom looks ugly when I put in 2700K or 3000K bulbs because the white tile turns yellow. It looks dark and uninviting. So I think it depends on the room which type of light is best.
@melissat9586
@melissat9586 Год назад
I have found this, too. The warmer lights will make certain colors look dirty! I had to swap out the warm bulbs for something more in the neutral cool leaning zone with dimmers. The warm bulbs made the freshly painted light blue look dirty! The warm bulbs work in rooms with warmer color palettes though. With colors it is way more complicated than just putting warm bulbs in every room.
@vaderladyl
@vaderladyl Год назад
Yes it depends on the room. In my bedroom I have from 2700k to 3500k depending on mood and activities all the way to 5000k in my laundry room and my garage where I need lots of light for tasking and cleaning.

TLDR: Cool temperature light should be used, but it has to be used thoughtfully and appropriately in terms of both time of day and location in the home. Hi, I love your videos. Often things are more complicated than they appear at first. You bring up lighting temperature/warmth in this video, and I see many comments on it. As a professional research scientist with specialized training and work experience in lighting and health, I wanted to share something I would love to see make it over to the design world. In general, warmer lights are more relaxing and comfortable, and cold lights are more jarring visually and make you unable to unwind. It's all due to our biology. I will spare the details, but the highlight is that our body's master internal clock is set by light exposure, particularly blue light. Sunlight has a lot of blue light in it, which your eyes sense and send a sigma; to your brain to set the master clock, your circadian rhythm. This signal evolved to be sent in the morning, close to waking up. Interruption of this process can lead to various health issues, from metabolic rates to mental health to increased workplace and motor vehicle accidents. The key is to use blue-rich, aka cold light, in the morning when you first wake up, especially if your schedule has you waking up when it is dark outside. You also want to use it in any space where you need to be highly productive during the day, such as a home office if you work from home. For the rest of the time, using warmer lights is a better choice, as you said. Exposure to blue-rich light in the evening is detrimental to your health; the most apparent effect is that it can make it harder to fall asleep. This includes cold temperature bulbs and screens on TVs, computers, tablets, and phones. Many smart bulbs and smart home products can change the color temperature to match what is best for your health automatically. Most computers, tablets, and phones also have this technology built in.

Great information. On varying heights in a room, I so agree that you really have to take that into consideration for the highest height, and be intentional. On measurements, remember to measure the entire pathway your biggest pieces will have to take, to get to their designated spot! If that involves an elevator or corner stairway or narrow door, proceed with caution. I recently had a deep sofa delivered to my second floor sitting room. I knew exactly how that sofa had to navigate. The moving men from the furniture store were telling me “no way” could it make that turn. I had to tell them, and then show them exactly how it was possible. I had even removed the door before they came. Should I have gotten a modular sofa instead? Probably, but the heart wants what it wants.

Loves these tips. I wasn't aware of the same height recommendation but glad to see that my home naturally has items of various heights. I did buy a matching dining table and buffet set that i do like, but the buffet is actually in the living area (it's open floor plan). I have a totally different buffet that brings in more color in the dining area and it seems to work well.

I'm a renter, and my landlord installed amber "boob" fixtures in the bedroom and the kitchen. They are ugly, and make the rooms dark and muddy, and it's hard on the eyes, hard to see what I'm doing! So I don't use them much. There is no overhead light in the living room, so I hung a woven rattan lamp from the ceiling next to my upright piano, and put a row of "closet door"mirrors edge to edge on the opposite wall, to reflect the light around the room. I miss the old incandescent light bulbs... so I look for daylight bulbs. It gives a nice, clear more neutral light.

I decorate in Orkcore. The look is dominated by red, grey, and brown. Brown leather and brown wood. Grey concrete, grey iron, occasionally grey stained wood such as my house number sign. Red leather, sedona red stained wood, a bit of red trim, red painted roof. Dark ages war/hunting weapons such as battleaxes, shields, and spears as decorations. Hide rugs and Navajo rugs. Raw materials and recycled materials. Exposed industrial elements such as large bolts where practical. Pointiness added everywhere it can be done safely, such as pointy plants, pointy curtain-rods, pointy fencing, pyramid tacks, horns, antlers.

I have a 100 year old home that got a major addition about 40 years ago and the mismatched flooring is a real problem especially for the older half. I have 3 different hardwoods adjoining each other, some incredibly tall transition strips, and the older portion of the floor is so wavy that the only possible new flooring for the kitchen was vinyl sheet! But covering the original heartwood pine planks and the gorgeous hickory because it doesn't match the newer flooring would be a crime! 😉 So we got wood plank printed vinyl so at least the main floor is all wooden looking. After you come in through the mudroom with the broken tiles, at least. 😬🤣

The nice thing about cushion covers is they are small enough and cheap enough, you can try lots of different colours and patterns. If your overall decor is fairly neutral, buy a couple of basic covers in different happy colours that you like, or use existing fabric in your home - even drape your favourite garment over one as an experiment. Pop them on your couch one at a time and see how the colours make you feel. If your decor is colourful and busy already, pick one of the colours and go for a plain rather than patterned cover. If you prefer neutral, get different textured materials in the same basic colourway. Best of luck!

i do disagree with the flooring, same as a beutiful rug, mix match floor done intentionally can be beautyfull specially if you play with tile or diferent shapes to frame areas, for instance if you have a hall adjacent to an open kitchen or living room, having a contrast between spaces is quite interesting to the eye in a positive way. The only clear sin of mix matching is when you try to fool people into puting a diferent floor that's slightly different than the original and stoping at the half of a space instead of going all the way.

Lots of chat on this thread about how real people need bright light in areas vs the designer dictates of soft light only. Which leads me to one of my pet peeves about home designers. THERE IS A VAST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PREPARING A ROOM FOR A PHOTO SHOOT AND MAKING A COMFORTABLE, USABLE AND INVITING LIVING SPACE. One small example would be piling so many pillows on a couch that no one can sit on it. Don't get me wrong, I love a good pillow, but couches are for sitting! Another is painting everything gray just 'cause it's the in thing. Gray environments are cold, institutional and off-putting. Can you really see a family relaxing and kabitzing together in cold, sterile rooms? Nah. Another is filing books so the spines of the book face inward (a recent trend) so you can't see them to service some kind of ridiculous color asthetic, or likewise, covering them with plain paper so you can't see what the books are but the colors are "nice". In the pillow vein, sure you can cover your beds in pillows, but every day you have to schlep them on and off to actually use the bed. Who's got time for all that in real life? Alternating decor for seasons and holidays is perfectly fine, but slavishly following the latest color trends dictated by the 'designers from on high' is silly and needlessly expensive. I think these are far more 'sinful' than the items mentioned in the video. Home design is about designing a HOME, not a show case. People, don't be sheep! Make your home practical, warm and welcoming for your family and friends. Ignore the siren song of revenue-generating designers unless their ideas truly help your life in as many ways as possible! And one last thought that is just my opinion: can we please get past putting words of what things are on every thing? When I go into the kitchen I know it is the kitchen without having the word 'Kitchen' on the wall to remind me. This trend is so tired!

I agree about the book spines. That has always seemed ridiculous to me. Why be offended by furniture suites that match, but embrace all white or grey walls, furniture and accessories throughout the house? Seems very 'matchy' and boring to me. Since I live in an area that gets a lot of snow in the winter, I appreciate some colour in my surroundings. My preference is interiors that have unique furnishings and curated accessories that reflect the style and interests of the people that live there.

I have a rule: for dinner I never enter to restaurants with cool light bulbs, I just feel too exposed and my flaws accentuated, it doesn't allow me to relax. So let alone home! (Only for kitchen and toilet)

What are your thoughts on mismatched flooring in different rooms? Many houses have wood floors in the main areas and carpet in the bedrooms, tile in the bathrooms, etc. In my house our bottom floor main flooring is a mid tone wood plank, but we have lighter planking in the bedrooms. We did do the flooring at different times and I honestly wish we did the lighter flooring everywhere, but not sure if it’s actually considered a design “don’t” since the flooring is segmented in separate rooms (like with a closable door in between).

Imho, there's nothing terribly wrong with that. If the doorway is open, the mismatch can look wrong sometimes (depending on the floor types, I'm sure some work together just fine). Behind the closed door - totally okay

different floors are ugly when you dont have a door separating. like it is shown in the video.

I absolutely hate warm light bulbs. Im a creative and I constantly deal with color and warm light to me makes everything look like it has nicotine film over it. I also have a lot of plants. I swapped out all the warm recess light bulbs for daylight bulbs. The old bulbs were so yellow it was annoying LOL So many designers love warm lighting, but I just can't.

Yes I’m an artist and I cannot deal with that awful yellow light. I use all daylight bulbs.

Same! I'm an art director married to a photographer and we both hate warm lightbulbs that cast a yellow or orange light. 5000K is actually the colour-temperature equivalent of natural daylight so it provides a clean light that shows true colour. Daylight-balanced bulbs FTW!

Agree totally! I just built a new home and I had them put in 5000k lightbulbs throughout the house. It allows the true color of all of my paint, flooring and artwork to show. A yellower bulb casts such a sickly yellow on everything.

So what is that like the 9mm rope chain...? I like it looks good. 9mm 18"?

3000K is my preferred lighting… I actually loathe anything less than that, and I can not understand why people like yellow lighting, like the small lamp behind you, lol. But aside from that minor disagreement, thank you for a great video!! I am playing catch up and appreciate how practical your advice is!!

I actually had a floor company recommend purposefully turning the floor layout or using a strip. They didn’t want to take up and redo the existing floor planks at the doorways. This was a definite NO THANKS from me.

Hi. I really like your videos. I have a question and it will be great if you can respond it. Do you think Ikea Skogsta dining table look like farm house style. I do not like farm house but I like this table. It looked a bit farm house style to me. Thank you.

I’m always measuring twice and thrice before buying anything! But sometimes, especially with round rugs, it’s still difficult to really imagine them in my space. I think the introduction of AR in interior design is really a dogsend because it lets me see the objects in my place before buying them. Really hope more products will become previewable this way!

OK I am enlightened. THIS is why I hate lamps turned on during the day or even candles. There is too much of a difference in the light color and something looks wrong. Posh I know why you have that lamp on in your vid, but could you get a lower or dimmer bulb that matches the daylight?

Smart lights can help a lot. Mine use cooler light in the day and warmer in the evening. They were a good investment in areas where the lighting needs vary.

I have a matching vanity unit and tall cabinet in one of the bathrooms (they are really well-made in solid teak wood and that was pretty hard to find) and now I am worried it looks a little tasteless... Having said that the room is really narrow so I don't think anyone is actually looking at both pieces of furniture at the same time. Not committing any of the other sins thankfully!

Enjoy what you love & works for your individual needs . In the bathroom , function & storage should come first . Interest & individuality can be added w/ towel colors etc. & perhaps art . ( I have a ltd . ed . print w/ picture light & coordinating color faux oriental area rug in our only bathroom - guests have commented favorably on the " special touches " . )

I think quality wood is never a bad choice. We have matching bedroom furniture. Chest of drawers, dressing table, wardrobe. They belonged to my husband’s grandmother and will never be split apart. We do have a modern bed frame because my husband is crazy tall and needed a Cal King length mattress. All rules have exceptions. We love his grandmother and the furniture is like a hug from her every time I walk into our room.

@@wendyduncan9084 Agree that nothing can replace quality wood pieces . Having been a designer working w/ pieces by Baker , Henredon , etc. , groups balanced by an accent piece , quality fabrics & art and / or accessories is always in good taste . So few companies today offer well-made , well-designed pieces that can be handed down & appreciated by the next generation . 🥰

Oh for Heaven's sake! Why should you worry that your quality furniture is "tasteless," just because someone online says mismatched is "in"? A few years from now, they will go back to matched sets. Just like in the 50s, everyone had white metal or wood kitchen cabinets. In the 70s and 80s, that all changed to finished wood. After 2000, the white kitchen returned. Anything to keep selling

eco smart now makes light bulbs with a switch and 5 settings right on the light bulb. They’re not really expensive either. I got them at Home Depot.
