A fun subversion of this is the mini mushroom in some of the super mario bros games. While you can only take one hit before dying and are only able to damage enemies by ground pounding, it does allow you to run up walls, bounce on enemies other than giant dry boneses, make you jump higher, allow you to access small pipes and pathways and therefore find secrets, and lets you run on water and sand. In Super Mario Bros DS it is actually required in order to reach some of the star coins.

Another invisibility powerup that is usually a detriment is the partial invisibility powerup in the original Doom/Doom II. It makes enemies aim randomly around you instead of directly at you. Sounds good in theory, but for any enemies with projectile based attacks it makes their attack patterns far less predictable and harder to dodge. A bunch of hell knights will normally all target directly at you, allowing you to easily strafe around the incoming fire. If you're invisible, it's a wall of projectiles that are just going to hit you.

Twilight Princess's magic armor drains rupees, yes, but the game gives you WAY too many rupees, so it really doesn't feel wasteful to wear it into combats. There is one practical use for the magic armor. In the cave of ordeals, there's an enemy called a gibdo. It's similar to a redead - creepy zombie thing that moves really slow and freezes you in place by screaming. Unlike the redead, though, the gibdo attacks you with an enormous sword instead of its own body, and every hit deals massive damage. If you're frozen and one of the gibdos is about to hit you, you can switch to the magic armor really quick, take the hit, and then immediately switch back and whack the gibdo until it screams again. Rinse and repeat. You still need a good amount of rupees, but it's not nearly as much of a financial drain as using it literally any other way would be.

I get what they were going for with the Magic Armor (Rupees are useless when you run out of things to buy), so giving them a practical use to power your armor was a novel idea, the execution was just poor. The constant drain was unnecessary, and they could've made the impact to your wallet relative to the strength of the hit it absorbed. An attack that dealt little damage would drain few Rupees and a major hit would be a hefty cost (to prevent making bosses too trivial). The extra weight could've just been scrapped all together, it doesn't really make sense from a gameplay/lore perspective. If they wanted to keep the weight from the unpowered armor, they could make it so the armor still offered a damage reduction (Link isn't used to wearing heavy armor, but heavy armor will still protect you better than a tunic will).

I'm in agreement here. I honestly wish that they had left the weight increase out as a compromise if they decided to keep the constant rupee drain in so I could wear the armor as a cosmetic even with no rupees left in my wallet. Instead they decided to leave it unchanged in the HD release for the Wii U.

didn't need no damn feathers for that, (honestly this is the game that broke me of trying to 100% the achievements) in AC1 (the one with the fucking flags) I performed a mission flawlessly no guard ever even saw me and I killed every one of them in the area, took out the target without being seen as well, then had so many guards suddenly on me I was in one spot fighting for like 30-40 minutes straight (which proced it's own achievement when I finally killed them all) as for that 60 hit combo you could draw the aggro for that just trying to get to some of those feathers

The problem comes in when those talismans also increase the damage you're taking by a percentage value. 10% for Scarseal, 15% for Soreseal. Best character is snake oil salesman with everything but vampiric yodel and grinning skull - amp myst, attack all spell, 3 skelly allies, without losing 25 gun dmg or item and meat drops. Plus snake oiler's great consumable crafting, 3x poison, big spleen, fan the hammer, etc. Bean slinger's pretty great too, but nex mex provides a massive benefit that the already mage class doesn't really get.

Meaning you would have one of your two power slots filled with an ability that would either give you an inconsistent amount of health, or a completely useless unit that wouldn't even slow the horde down. That on top of the large wind up time means you would get killed waiting to see if got lucky enough to get a good necktie or not.

I can think of a few, and they are; *_Black Blade (Tenchu Z):_* Although it serves its intended purpose (slightly reducing your detection range), it's how you hold the item that screws you over, it takes up a consumable item slot, despite *_not_* being a consumable, you need only buy it once. *_Berserk Mode (NieR: Automata):_* An ability A2 possesses in place of the self-destruct that 2B and 9S have, how it functions is a significant damage boost at the cost of *_constant_* HP loss, shutting off once you hit a threshold. *_Superbolide (Final Fantasy XIV):_* A skill unique to the Gunbreaker class that grants them 10 seconds of invincibility at the cost of reducing their HP to 1. To make it even worse, you drop to 1 HP first and then gain the invincibility the frame after, meaning you can die from using it if your timing is bad enough, and if you are fighting a group of enemies, the odds of getting hit on that one frame goes up. *_Partial Invisibility (Doom and Doom 2):_* Although this works by giving all enemy attacks a slight directional offset, this can work to your detriment, as it will make enemy attacks harder to dodge, especially if said enemy is the Mancubus, as their attacks already have a slight offset, making them even more unpredictable. *_Glass Cannon (Noita):_* A perk that can both work for and against you, it caps your health to 50 and negates health boosts in exchange for x5 damage. Sounds bad enough already, right? It gets worse, it doesn't just multiply damage by 5, it does the same to the *_radius_* of player-made explosions, meaning you need to be far more careful to not blow yourself up. Picking up a second Glass Cannon is absolute madness, as your damage and explosion radius are multiplied by 25.

Old Sega Megadrive Game, "Super Hydlide". The item would be the silver sword. You need to find it randomly searching a graveyard or consult a strategy guide. While it is the best "conventional" sword in the game, it also weighs literally 10 kilogramm. About as much as your armor. Meaning there is a decent chance you will be overloaded just having it in your inventory. At least it sells for much. But if you sold it, you are off even worse: Because you can not buy it back after leaving town. And this weapon is also the requirement to unlock the best and lightest sword in the game: The Lightsaber. Yes, a literal Lightsaber. And you just need to lug the silver sword up a literally cloud piercing tower, teeming with enemies!

The problem is, you are stripped of all of your party members AND your wand and left to use the Sword of G. Gryffindor. Cool in theory! Problem is, the sword scales with your physical stats, NOT the magical ones you've been training up all game. Your only hope of beating the Basilisk is stocking up on healing items, doing all of the side quests that get you strong items, buying cards (that will be random every time) that allow you to deal magical damage, and praying to RNGesus that the snake misses (its hit rate is decent) and that you hit (the sword's hit rate is garbage, and tends to roll 0 on damage)

@KeithElliott-zd8cx
@KeithElliott-zd8cx Год назад
Well, you're wrong. First and foremost, TP had TONS of rupees. If you were able ti buy the magic armor at all, you can afford the occasional rupee drain. Not to mention it's the most expensive thing in the game - there's almost nothing else to buy by then. Secondly - on demand invinciblity, for this cheap when its on, is a steal. You can block like 80 hits with a full wallet, and the hundred 50 rupee chests are each basically trivializing a fight if you want. 12 rupees per hit isn't anywhere close to a big deal, you can hold 1k rupees and again theres a lot of cash in chests. Third - there's a 50 floor challenge that's WAY fucking harder without this armor - unneeded in the main story, sure, a fairy and 3 healing potions is fine, but not there. And fourth, iirc theres a quest where the reward is they refill your rupees indefinitely - at this point, rupees are just a mp bar for a toggleable invinciblity with no real downsides as rupees are eventually worthless and you often have too many to get more.
