In my opinion Revolution 9 works in the sense that it represents the fullest extent of the lack of continuity the White Album has. I’ve heard the White album described in the past as three people each trying to steer the same boat as it drives head first into an Iceberg, and in that sense Revolution 9 is incredibly indicative of their artistic disagreements. Lennon and Yoko released a few albums around the same time period with the same Avant-garde mentality, and Paul and George reportedly didn’t want it on the album, which makes perfect sense seeing as Lennon probably would have cut a few Paul songs given the chance (and considering his later comments probably would have cut some of his own songs out). To criticize Revolution 9 for not being a Rock song on a “Rock album” misses the point imo. The White album is a “Rock album” in the loosest way, half of Paul’s songs on the album don’t even feature electric guitars. It conceptually relies on not being cohesive and a subtly disturbed undercurrent looming underneath. In this sense, Revolution 9 could be seen as the release of both tinge chaotic and disturbed tension built up over the album as the drastic tone and musical shifts between (and in some cases within) songs and the depressed and dark themes in songs like Long Long Long, Julia, Dear Prudence, Yer Blues, etc. release in an inexplicable avant- grade fiery explosion. Idk, maybe I’ve watched too many David Lynch movies or something, but that’s my impassioned defense of Revolution 9.

Revolution 9 fits the more open-minded and less defined flow and style of the white album. it's not supposed to be a pleasurable listening experience, more of an uncanny inclusion that defines the Beatles willingness to push expected musical and artistic boundaries as the absurdly famous band they were.

I love how over 50 years later you can argue that "Revolution #9" is still the most experimental track ever included on a Number 1 album. (I'd be curious to hear any other nominations for this title?) To me when I'm in the mood for it "Revolution #9" is a great trip. there's just so many little things to listen to. I think in the olden days of listening on an LP it would have bothered me more but now I often just stop the White Album after "Cry Baby Cry" (it's a long af album anyway) but when I do listen to "Revolution #9" I often find it quite interesting.

Great video! Worst Beatles songs are always bound to ruffle _someone's_ feathers, but I think you did a really good job with explaining your positions (and overall stellar editing and humor). I will defend Goodnight and Revolution 9, though, in saying that Revolution 9 works in its context in the white album, and Goodnight works in its context after Revolution 9. See, the white album is characterized by its chaos. No two songs are alike. I think of Back in the USSR (an amped-up '50s Classic Rock song about a Russian spy) transitioning into Dear Prudence (an introspective, sensitive acoustic tune), The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill (an annoyingly goofy satire) playing before While My Guitar Gently Weeps (a melody oozing with soul and passion), Helter Skelter (a painfully heavy metal song with screaming and intense percussion) transitioning into Long Long Long (a haunting, somber ballad about reconciliation with God), and Honey Pie (a cheery Vaudeville-inspired one-off) coming right before Savoy Truffle (a suave 60s jam with full-sounding saxophones and twangy guitars) as the most obvious back-to-back demonstrations of the album's extreme contrast. I also think that Wild Honey Pie works for this reason-- it's a silly interlude reminding the listener not to get too comfortable or take the album too seriously, but that's besides the point. It's an idiosyncratic, absurd, and random compilation of each Beatle's individual creative direction, interests, and most importantly, sound, from his own isolated corner; not working together, but against each other. Each song is its own self-contained story; a pitch, trying to sell you on John, Paul, George, or Ringo's unique vision that they want to convey. It's counter-intuitive, but that eclectic pattern actually gives the album continuity and a sense of flow. The album is the embodiment of the phrase "method to the madness." It also showcases the brilliance of the blank and now iconic cover: no expectations (no payoff), no way to constrain it conceptually, no way to pin it down. The lack of a theme _is_ the theme; the lack of cohesion _is_ what makes it cohesive. It's simply undefinable, and that's makes it such a great LP. With all this in mind, take everything I said about the album (chaotic, contrasting, idiosyncratic, random, working against itself) and pack into an eight minute and fifteen second cacophony, and what you get is Revolution 9. In other words, Revolution 9 is the culmination of everything the white album stands for. Goodnight is the falling action (Can You Take Me Back Where I Came From is also an ominous introduction from the tail-end of Cry Baby Cry). It's a soft, lush melody to wash down the track that preceded it as a heartfelt send-off. Those final two tracks condense and represent everything about the white album, and personally, it works to great effect in the same vein as all the other pairs.

i simultaneously do and dont understand the hate for revolution 9. like yeah it doesnt really fit with anything else the beatles did, and i dont find it especially pleasant to listen to but at the same time, the white album is already kind of all over the place, in a good way. id probably dislike it more if it was on any other album but the white album is definitely the most fitting, plus i appreciate the fact a band so popular released something so weird and avant garde. i also think good night is actually pretty good in the context of being the final track after revolution 9, i probably wouldnt often listen to it on its own, though.

Revolution 9 is one of the absolute highlights of The White Album. Also - there's a great early version where it was just part of Revolution (hence the break into 1 & 9 eventually). I understand it's not everyone's cup of tea but it's also hidden away on side 4, so if you don't like it then don't stick on side 4. Also in terms of "it's style", it's actually quite carefully boiled down, not as elongated and all encompassing, you can see that they've kinda "popped" up that kind of sound. The tracks that are "nothing" are the ones that are actually bad, stuff like Wild Honey Pie, Revolution 9 and Good Night all achieve exactly what they intend to.

@@TheWaterlooWatermelon I disagree so hard with Dizzy Miss Lizzy and Little Child. Badass little rockers. I also don't think Dizzy Miss Lizzy is a bad closer for Help! Of course Yesterday fits great but i also love that they decided to put straight behind it some fast, hard, rocky stuff. In my opinion they ALWAYS knew what they did, except for Abbey Road. The End would be such a great closer but instead of leaving things be the way they are they have to change something. Her Majesty would've fit way better on Let It Be.

Fun fact: I can play Revolution 9 on piano! You can do it too! Just smash your fingers all over the keys, say "number 9" repeatedly, and mix in some laughing and Yoko screams. Easy peasy! And it's sounds lovely and proffesional.

As a hardcore Beatles' fan (and an expert in all things rock and pop) from the early 50s, throughout the golden era, until the early 2,000s... I must say 🟥🟩🟨🟧☮️🟧🟨🟩🟥 Your analysis and ranking are both spot-on! 🍏👽💚 And "YES"... there truly are no BAD Beatle songs (but I still love these types of discussions) cause they had a few minor missteps in their incredibly magical career... so a "worst of list" is possible. But even their 12 worst songs ever {all featured on a single album} would be more listenable and enjoyable, than lots of other "actual" lps, from even the 60s. But especially when compared to today's music?

I don't think Wild Honey Pie can be considered bad because the intention obviously was not to make a great song, but to have fun. The intention is always something very important to understand before saying a song is good or bad.
@SgtPeppersLonelyHeartsClubBand
Honey Don’t is honestly one of the most underrated beatles songs by far. It slaps, Ringos vocals are on point, and the guitar is absolutely KILLER. It’s probably the most unfairly hated beatles song ever, and one of the most underrated with Its All Too Much.

Revolution 9 to Good Night is actually two of the best tracks off of White Album because it's such a funny and thus perfect ending. Like "Oh, here's 8 minutes of unnerving sound samples. Oh, you're still here? Here, a super cheesy faux-Disney lullaby sung by our drummer." Genius.

If really, I don't think that Dizzy Miss Lizzy is the one of the worst songs. I explain that its a end of the "Help!" like this. Maybe in every Disney cartoon in end hero (or protagonist) just not really die but in scene it looks like he's "dead", and this is "Yesterday". Sad song. And later we see that the main protagonist is alive, plays "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" Or explain normal, its chaotic and I like this. Underrated rocky theme of the "Help!" Album. (Sorry for bad English, I am from Russia)
