I've read in many places that eating a whole large onion a day after several weeks will increase your testosterone. Would this not offset the amount of carbs in the onion? Have you heard of this as well
I'm doing the keto challenge which you had start with a 36 hour fast. Can you do a 16 hour fast everyday so from 2000-1200 and not effect your metoblic rate or do you still recommend 3-5 days on a 16 hour
Anything that is man made and prepackaged is bad for your health. I think this keto diet in the short distance will help but in the long run you have to eat a colorful array of veggies. I do agree nightshade are bad for those who suffer with arthritis and autoimmune diseases. But cooked tomatoes and eggplant once in a while is good. I agree some veggies should be cooked to be beneficial
The problem with keto is that there’s too much animal meats and I think those are all going to be a detrimental to our health moving forward in the long run. Especially eating bacon and beef and chicken I think vegetables are a lot better not so much animal products in meats and dairy cheese are horrendous on the body eating them in limited amounts far and few in between or the best way to go
More notably, 1 and 4 aren't bad in small quantities. 5 is mainly towards people with certain conditions like Rheumatoid Arthritis, and 6 should be cooked in ways other than steaming.
Wait, so rhubarb is on both Thomas's cleanest Keto foods list and worst vegetables list? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MiAdxjJ49Mk.html
He's just giving you advice guys don't take it to heart. I realized a long time you can either do everything these videos say or weigh the pros and cons. I can't be perfect. I can't be near perfect. If one of the pieces of advice seems too much for me I store it for later until my stomach and mind can adjust.
@Violett Fem Lmao, I think I'd rather starve than eat canned beets. I'm sorry that's very rude of me but I've just never used canned beets. Probably because I hate fresh beets. But I'm positive beets are better for people than a Twinkie, WAY better.
@Violett Fem I also hate Lima beans & Brussels sprouts. Fried okra is fine but not ketogenic.I would not eat it plain, bleh. Olives however, I LOVE them. I don't really like vegetables, it's pretty easy for me to not eat them unfortunately. 😞
I’m not keto, but started eating pretty clean a few weeks ago. Love your videos because it gives help for making good choices for any diet or healthy lifestyle. Lost 12 pounds in 3 weeks!!
@@veniqer couldn’t agree more keto is a cheap knock off of carnivore I’ve been on it for 4 years now it changed my life and made me realize everything else is a wannabe carnivore
I do 3 months on low carb and two weeks off low carb. By "off low carb" what I usually do is make a big pot of vegetable soup. I put in everything....potatoes...tomatoes...green beans...peas....carrots....corn....ground beef etc....I eat two meals a day and fast 16/8 so I eat it as one meal over the course of several days. This is the source of my carbs for those two weeks. I don't eat bread or rice or pasta even off keto for those two weeks. I think its important for your body to be able to handle an occasional influx of carbs and I prefer that those carbs come from veggies.
I love how you put a pretty dramatic title about the worst vegetables and you actually say a lot of nice things about all of them. That says a lot about how cool veggies are :)
Thanks for the LECTIN shout-out! Dr. Gundry has written a whole book on the subject named, "The Plant Paradox". It completely changed the way I choose vegetables and fruits.
Yes / he's the Master Jedi on this issue. Lectins is not only about veggies but most grains, something this guy did not mentioned and the inflammatory issues/ to all who don't know would really recommend Dr. GRUNDY'S CHANNEL.
@@robertoperaza2683 Thomas did not mention grains bc this video is targeted to those on a keto diet... a very low-carb lifestyle, which does not include grains (and it's a given that keto is a naturally low-inflammatory). Thus, it's something we already know.
@@mynameisgladiator1933 I'm starting out on this and I agree with you. I feel that there is little left to eat...very confusing - what is left in the Keto diet with so many vegetables 'bad'....I'm vegan...
That's not a good idea from a gardening perspective as all of those plants are susceptible to similar diseases. Separation between families is important, and then rotating spots year over year is good too.
Learning to combine keto with my specific blood type diet and I have noticed when I stay away from specific lectin foods that are sticky for my blood type it makes a huge difference! Everyone IS so different and we all would do well to take the wisdom and adapt for what works for us individually. It’s so great that Thomas puts stuff like this out there because though not a holy grail it’s very helpful to remember when there are soooo many choices of veggies which ones might not be the best choice- and truly tomatoes are actually more harmful to me than processed pancakes or keto snacks (as far as a direct inflammation and arthritic response) we all need to test and see what is best for us as an individual. Not get all judgmental and bothered but to be grateful and take what works for us! Come on let’s get healthy in our hearts as well as our bodies!!! Yay
Lots of things have been debunked, including the holy grail that saturated fat and cholesterol cause heart disease. Yet a lot of doctors still swear by them.
I’ve reached my goal weight so lately I’ve been eating small sweet potatoes with pink salt and apple cider vinegar. It’s delicious. Thomas, would you consider doing more videos about weight maintenance on keto? I don’t want to lose any more weight but really love keto with IF 16:8. I’m a 60-year-old woman who went from 180+ to 137-140. From a size 16 to a size 8. I love it!! I’ve been keto/low carb since March of this year.
Maybe increase protein a little? I think Dr Berg mentioned what to add when you want to maintain weight or increase weight, but it escapes me what he suggested.
Wowzers....that's fantastic. I'm 60 and really battling to shed my apron belly and butt. My body used insanely inflamed as I'm constantly in serious joint pain etc. I've ditched all sugar....carbs and do good fats very low carb and some protein.....yet I'm just not ditching fat or pain. I do 16 or 18 hr fast and 20:4 once a week. I'm so darn desperate and seriously in need of advice. 🙏😟
My head hurts from all this. I lost 20lbs in the last 5 months just by reading nutrition labels and eating the suggested serving size. I keep my carbs to 50 or less per day. That’s it. A little bit of meal planning so I don’t go over 50 carbs by mistake. That’s it.
I know. The same here. I went from 116 to 108 pounds on Atkinson diet, doing 20 grams and going up to 50 in 2014. But then I had 2 pregnancies and breastfeeding in between. 2015-2020. Couldn't be too low on carbs. Went up to 125 pounds (5'2"). Finally, I got back to 20 grams, not working anymore. The body has adopted. So, i do IF and ketoyish, trying to eat clean. It looks like it's working.
Don't be that proud about loosing Weight that fast, cause that Is one of the main causes for the formation of gallstones in the gallbladder just saying, it Is best to have results with patience and Little by Little than doing it quicker.
I'm surprised on the raw spinach call-out. Been on keto for years and I've lost over 100 lbs. Not going to lie, up until recently raw spinach was a staple in almost every dish for me.
Same here, part of my daily smoothie for a long time. Down 60 pounds and feeling better than I have been in years. Interesting that baby spinach is high in iron, magnesium and a nice amount of vitamin K.
@@yf66589 You're saying eating spinach will cause kidney stones? If so that must be a slow ass build up. Even before keto I ate raw spinach with a lot of dishes and I've never once had one.
@@Bohimen yes it's slow, and maybe some people are more susceptible than others, whatever you increase your risk + there is actually no valuable nutrient in spinach. It's just empty fiber with plant toxins and antinutrients.
No way! I'm over this. Seriously, there are sooooo many essential nutrients in these vegetables ahhhhhhh, when did eating become so complicated. I understand keto for healing and weight loss but my goodness just enjoy for goodness sakes! Good information though😜
How sad. I understand that keto is a completely different way of processing glucose but is it worth not eating what mother Earth gave us for good health? Fruits and vegetables are not to be given up or any new way of eating. I did keto for part of a year and lost weight on it. I understand that it works for awhile but it didn't sit well with me that for one thing... A lot of animals had to die in order for me to be on keto which also is horrible for the environment. The other thing that didn't sit well with me was that I knew in my heart I should not be bypassing fruits and vegetables. Today I am vegan and I am so relieved to understand good health from the vegan perspective. It fills me with joy. The keto diet could not have come at a worse time when our ecosystem is on the brink. You're an intelligent man, you must get bursts of insight that you are ignoring so that you can continue your keto diet. I think you should listen to your inner voice that's telling you you're missing out. God gave you an exceptionally beautiful brain.
@@Sketcher93 Vegan diet is worse for the planet, unless you grow your own food, or live in a tropical climate with lots of local produce year round. It's also much less nutritious than the keto diet.
This is so complicated ,god put fruits and vegtables here for a reason!! No fruit!! Really!! What about all the anti oxidants and phytonutrients!!!!! Why to coplicated!! Everything in moderation!!!!!!
Before Keto, I thought I couldn't handle a lot of cruciferous veggies, but my stomach issue alleviated after starting keto. I can eat most anything, even cauliflower and broccoli but in moderation. Sometimes it seems our bodies can't handle certain things when in reality, it is how much we are eating of that particular thing. For example, a plate full of broccoli instead of a few stalks. When our stomachs are upset, it might not be because of a food intolerances but rather that too much of that food was consumed for the stomach to digest calmly. Just a thought and shared experience.
EXELLENT VIDEO -- I've made same experiences on spinach and oxalates -- After a drastic fasting schedule I wanted to treat myself and still eat 'ultra-healthy' as I thought. I didn't know that I had chosen the worst combo: 50 gr of spinach per day plus any frequency of cacao with cinnamon powder per day -- Whoaa, kidney pain galore. Some heavy research later and I fixed my pain within two weeks via the oxalate etc avoidance routine. My study lead me into FODMAP and a few other noteworthy areas. But I learned my lesson there to second what Thomas is saying ;) Great job Thomas.
With nightshades the lectins are in the skin and seeds. Remove those and you have greatly reduced the lectins. Steam spinach yes but add cream cheese (something with calcium) will help reduce oxalates.
I eat raw carrots everyday because of the high fiber; but once cooked, that changes. I know some veggies sweeten up when cooked so I eat those that I love raw. I’ve lost a lot of body fat from low carb eating and eating my carrots was part of my meal. 😀
Idk if I've asked this before if if anyone else has. But what about fermented vegetables. It destroys lectins and lowers carbs while increasing healthy gut microbes. I ferment peppers ketchup you name it
Wow Thomas! This, for me, may be my favorite vlog you’ve put out. I just listened twice 🤷♀️😂I’ve been a huge fan and subscriber for three years and have learned so much yet this one really spoke to me and made such sense with how I’m doing keto and how I feel eating certain foods you talked about . Thank you very much for this one!
Carrots raw vs carrots cooked. Cooked or steamed carrots is a higher insulin spike than when the carrot is raw. Mainly because raw means the cells of the plant stay closed. Raw means less nutrition, but still a heap of fibre. For me, I just treat any vege's carb content as part of my daily limit. Sweet potatoes are awesome. I'm glad you said, keep the quantity low. I knew nothing about lectins. I love capsicum and tomato.
You absolutely Rock, I love 💕 how you breakdown EVERYTHING.... I’m in Ottawa Canada & share your videos with friends all of the time. It’s amazing to me how great you are at explaining how our bodies work in laymen terms. I wish you the best for sharing your best life because you are transforming lives by sharing your passion. I am in my second week of keto & your information videos inspire me everyday. THANK YOU 🙏
Thankfully I detest carrots and corn and don't miss potatoes anymore at all since discovering different ways to cook radishes. Loaded roasted radishes taste almost just like a loaded baked potato. I do however miss sweet potatoes. I've been keto for 3 years and still have 1 or 2 a year. I do use onion, tomatoes and peppers most everyday though and always will.
@@MountainsnVallies yes. I cut them in quarters and rubbed them with ghee and added onion powder and a little garlic powder. Roast 50 minutes in oven at 400° or 13 minutes in air fryer at 400°.
OMG ! Thomas ! You just resolved my biggest issues with cramps and stomach acid . This is it ! Spinach ! I drank it with cocktails, i ate it with salat twice a day and I was not well. Thank you. I will start again .
Great info.. Would really appreciate it if you would consider doing a video on Keto and uric acid for those that deal with problems with uric acid problems and stones.
I just looked online, a serving of red onions is 94 grams with 9.5g of carbs (1.3g is fiber) That should mean than you get 8.2g of carbs per 94 grams of red onion. A serving of shallots is 43 grams, has 7.1g of carbs (1.4g is fiber). So you get 6.7grams of carbs per 43 grams of shallot. That means that gram for gram shallots have more carbs. So yes, shallots have less carbs per serving but red onions have less carbs for the same of shallot.
Fascinating and very informative! I was crushed to learn about raw spinach (love my spinach salads and I put tons in my green smoothies! 😢), but at least now I know. Really hate the taste of cooked spinach, so I guess it has to go. Thanks for “nerding out” on the science of Keto, Thomas! No one does it better. 😁❤️
Have lost 75 lb in just over two months... I eat raw onions, raw tomatoes, raw spinach, raw red bell peppers, raw Swiss chard every single day.... what works for some people may not work for others.
Hey Thomas! Thanks for the content. Aren’t there studies that show tomato is beneficial for men especially due to the anti-cancer/colon cancer properties?
I’m starting to think nobody knows what they’re talking about here. In another video you said rhubarb and spinach were good to go. Specifically I remember you saying to put spinach in a taco salad as part of the meal plan video. There have been multiple contradictions over several videos I watched from this channel and I’m starting to not trust some of this information… just sayin’.
"I would rather you have veggies than processed junk" THANK YOU!!!! When I decided to return to a low carb/keto lifestyle I wanted to take a completely different approach this time. I knew I wanted meals/snacks to be more plant focused. This includes beets and carrots, especially if I am making my own beet/carrot/ginger juice. I could not find a reason, personally, to deny my body any veggie it may ask for from time to time, period.
Good points, these internet junkies go way overboard. Anyone with a brain can understand that eating lower carbs and unprocessed food diets is the way to a healthy and enjoyable lifstyle. Most vegetables are good carbs. The mediterranean diet is still the most studied and agreed upon as the overall best diet for most people and demonstrates longevity. A healthy diet is one with healthy variety. I also find it very hypocrital when these so called diet guros like Thomas start plugging processed healthy snacks etc. They are getting paid by the companies and these foods are processed. Processed is processed period.
*It's essential to know which vegetables to be cautious about when following a keto diet. Thanks for sharing this valuable information to help us make better choices!*
I'm new to your channel. The depth and breadth of your knowledge, coupled with the clear and concise explanations you provide is quite simply a Godsend! Many thanks XxX
I have an autoimmune thyroid problem. No nightshade for me, and if I eat any cruciferous they must be cooked. Just thought I'd mention this for anyone else who has the same issue.
@@paolarojas449 you have hashimoto's thyroiditis? If so, and you can still eat Nightshade and/or raw goitrogenic foods without becoming inflamed and suffering the consequences, then good for you! I can't. Nightshades and goitrogenic foods make me ill.
@@lynnv8501 sorry to hear that. Is the first time I hear that nightshade is bad for someone other Hashimoto. My aunt has it too and it's OK with most if thenfood. BTW we are not keto. We eat everything.

eat most veggies just try not to eat alot of them raw. It seems for the most part cooking them except parsnips will make them much better and less harmful. I have been on keto for 5 months and I can say i mix it up alot and add in some do not haves but in smaller quantities raw goods always better then processed crap.
1. I didn't even know what "parsnips" were. Or challots. Never liked sweet potatoes! 2. Carrots and bell peppers are fine! I simply use my food chopper and chop them VERY VERY FINE. Then combine in 3rds. 3.I still eat tomatoes - as pasta sauce - maybe once a month or so. Never impeded me in fat loss. Still lost 20+ lbs.
I used to eat spinach salads all the time. Thankfully I cut them out without even realizing they were bad. Now I toast garlic in avocado or coconut oil and toss the spinach in. Sooooo much better!
Being Sicilian and living South Texas cutting out tomatoes 🍅, peppers🌶, 🫑 is actually upsetting. I have raging autoimmune issues. And my AST and ALT levels are awful. (No I don’t drink alcoholic take or acetaminophen). Eggplant is a Sicilian fav, but I only eat it occasionally. I seriously feel sad right now.
Chapa you really don’t have to. All these people tell you to cut out everything in your life. Tomato’s peppers enjoy them if they are your staple and if your ancestors used to have them. Don’t completely stop any food, to think about and honestly how long can you survive without eating them for the rest of your life I think we should just be cautious of the food, eat whole foods enjoy once in a while and workout Just don’t eat packaged processed crap 😊
OP , I feel the same . I'm literally addicted to raw tomatoes and love peppers and aubergines too but after watching this I will ( arghhh !! ) give them up to see if they are the cause of my flare ups ....
Most of the lectins r in the skin bbz so just remove it. Enjoy ur tomatoes & eggplants! The root cause of ur autoimmune condition cud be a disturbed gut microbiome. Try incorporating fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, etc...
Omg thomas this was sooo helpful!! I was doing sooo good on keto shedding lbs weekly but then last week i had a spinach salad almost everyday because I was trying to increase my fiber intake atleast a little bit and i was so bummed to see the scale didnt even move and I couldnt understand why! now I am thinking it was all that raw spinach and tomatoes 🤯😩
Nashda, that’s wild! Either a huge coincidence or huge eye opener that your newly introduced spinach salad is the culprit! How fun if it’s THAT simple and way to go with your healthy keto👏
I eat tomatoes a lot. Actually I make a bolognese sauce (non-traditional and 3 cans of whole peeled tomatoes per batch) from scratch (no pasta) and eat that almost once per day. I've lost 35 kilos in 18 months to 2 years.
No argument there, BUT the keto pancake isn’t supposed to be for people who would prefer the veggies but for those who can’t let go yet of their craving for pancakes. If one will eat pancake, then the keto pancake is the way to go at least until one can completely annihilate their desire for pancakes.
Did he say to eat them ALL the time genius? He mentioned those keto pancakes as something to treat yourself with, like a cheat meal. I’ll assume you like treating yourself to a carrot stick. DA
The important thing that a few commentators have missed is that if you have a diverse microbiome, you don't usually have issues with most of these. I have no problem eating spinach, chard, tomatoes and peppers raw, but once they're cooked (except tomatoes - sauce!), they don't go down as well. Essentially: listen to your body.
I'm sorry but spinach has too many benefits for me to give up. Apart from the many health benefits, it increases cell turnover and my skin has never looked this amazing.
I just found this channel, and I eat raw spinach in salads about every day. This is the first time I've heard anyone say raw spinach should not be eaten on keto. But no way am I going to buy keto pancake mix! Ridiculous.
i like eating sweet potato and beets raw that I shred to my food, they work great in salads and as a spice along a mian dish. I also love adding homemade fermented saurkraut mixed with a number of spices and cream cheese.
@@mahoganymarco9199 I'm judging from my personal experiences. I lived in a italian family as a exchange student. The only way we ate tomatoes were peeled and without seeds. When I attended basic cooking course, they teached us this also. And as a person with autoimmune dissease, I can confirm that not eating foods containing lectin help me quite a bit. But our personal experiences may differ. Especially if you are perfectly healthy person, you might not necessarily feel the change. Worth a try tho imo.
I've been on Carnivore Keto for 7 months and I've lost 80lbs. Went from 360 to 280 in 7 months! My body is so adapted to no sugar that Heavy Cream in my Coffee tastes like Icecream to me. But on my so-called "Cheat Days" (Every 45 days) my cheat meals are Vegetables. I'll fry up some Kale or Asparagus in Beef Suet or Bacon grease with some Pink Salt and it's like a real treat to me. But this coming Thanksgiving I was thinking about maybe having a little Sweet Potatoes with just Cinnamon and Pink Salt.
To be fair, people are just now becoming aware of the anti nutrients in plants. Vegtables are fine as long as you know how to deactivate their anti nutrients.
BOGO link does not work on the Superfat website. At least I could not get it to accept it..... I bought some stuff anyway to support!! Thank you Thomas for all that you do and share with us!!! always love learning more from you!
I need to avoid most vegetables and fruits most of the time cause my body reacts badly means inflammation of joints, muscle pains and bones aching asap due to oxalates, lectins and histamine and I‘m prone to getting NAFL when eating even berries
I got all hyped up on keto, super foods etc and i loved a mixed green salad daily. I had my blood work done and it came back great except uric acid which is an indicator of oxalates. So many super foods including even our beloved avocados have oxalates it seems. I had to cut, nut, sardines, spinach (along with some other greens) beet root powder, tea, cinnamon and turmeric. Now if you think Keto was a constricting diet try doing a low purines and oxalates in there to boot! Edit: The point of this is that extreme diets do take a lot of tweaking and everything in moderation.
It seems like for every positive study, there is a negative one. I appreciate you for not trashing others in the field, ie lectins, it shows what great character you have. Thanks!
I actually don't recognize these as food, at least that's what I usually tell people because I can't explain why I don't like these specifically, now I have an excuse at least.
Also, note that he's not saying these will get in the way of losing weight. He's saying they can lead to malnourishment by binding to precious minerals like zinc and magnesium. Interesting about the spinach. I did keto for 6 months (and lost 53 lbs!) and baby spinach was a staple food for my salads, usually 50g just about daily. I was very strict and used Cronometer, which helped immensely 👍
love the science behind keto. It makes the weight loss fun, but at the same time educational. Thank you for these videos. Trying to learn everything Keto.
The juice will not be the same as the vegetable. Check out dr berg about beetroot. The fiber makes a difference in how fast the glucose is absorbed. I love beet juice too lol, but in terms of keto its better to blend with the fiber and drink that.
You made a good statement by saying cook it INTO something (in regards to lowering oxalates) by using oil. But if you eat the oil that you cooked it in are you still consuming oxalates or are they nullified?
No. His point is that oxalates break down into harmless molecules. Although he didn't say it, the cooking temperature is likely the key. When you steam, you barely can cook at a temperature much higher than boiling (100 C). Oil cooking temperature gets things up to 140 C or higher.
Higher cooking temp and the addition of fat breaks down the unwanted compounds. Remember when cooking spinach to add some acid (vinegar, lemon juice) or a dairy calcium source to boost absorbability of nutrients in spinach.
