7 Years of Indie Game Development - The Making Of Sapiens

Share my 7 year journey as we look at how a hugely ambitious but successful game is created by a solo indie dev, from the first concepts to the early access release on Steam.
It's been a long and at times difficult process, filled with many obstacles and breakthroughs. The development of Sapiens has changed my life. I've learned so much and grown both as a developer and a person. But there is still a lot of work to do, and I'm looking forward to leading Sapiens to its full potential, through Early Access and beyond.
Sapiens is available now on Steam:
store.steampowered.com/app/10...
Thanks again to everyone who has helped along the way.
Here is a link to ThinMatrix's channel, as mentioned in the video:

I don't know you at all, but in the publishing scene at the end, when I saw your family standing behind you, experiencing the same excitement, supporting and applauding you, I realized what a beautiful family you are, what a good father you are, and you did this for your family. sometimes you don't need to know, but I felt you closely my friend, you have accomplished something very nice, considering the family support and living conditions for many years, you have finally overcome the difficult paths, you have been a great source of motivation for me, congratulations

Just piggybacking to affirm most of this, with a caveat on "you did this for your family". That's not necessarily true, and it's no less admirable if it's not. You can do things for yourself even if you have a family, and that doesn't detract from the nobility of this pursuit, nor your love for your family. Rooting for you!

I'm also an Indie Game Developer, but develop games for mobile phone. After two years of hard-working, I've completed publishing two games on Android and iOS stores: Squid Cannon, Twitch Balls. I will continue to develop more games as it's not only my favorite but also my ambition to be successful in Game Development.

31:50 I really like the name Sapiens that you landed on. Because that name isn't JUST prehistoric humans. It is a game about Sapiens. It could be prehistoric, medieval, modern, future, or anything. Because of this you aren't stuck with only cavemen. It can go as far as you want and the modders want.

16:45 I like the idea of standing commands! I also like how RimWorld has a forbid command that if you don't want people to interact with something you can forbid them from doing it. That way you can have some standing commands to harvest your wheat fields for example but if you have some decorative bushes, trees, wheat, etc. Around you can forbid them from harvesting it. Edit: 42:40 hmm... I can see how automation can lead to you not really having a lot to do and that makes sense. For farming though I really do believe you should be able to automate it. Food is something that is passing and going all of the time by the day and so is something your Sapiens should be able to automate. Or else as you get larger and larger towns (or even just multiple) you will have to spend far too much time simply managing the food they have. At the moment food isn't an issue but that is only because it is FAR too easy to survive. Seasons pass quickly and plants never die. So after harvesting a few banana trees (for example), after you plant them you now have a infinite food source that when under a roof almost never rots.

1:03:08 since we are talking about mines I wanted to ask you how you and the community feel about horizontal mines. Now I understand that the way that the terrain functions this is simply just impossible with your way of digging which is better for pit mines (which I love because they leave a large impact on the world!) But it can be quite difficult to mine in very mountainy terrain as the slopes become too steep very often. That is why I thought that perhaps we could have some sort of structure like a mineshaft entrance that would then allow your camera to get underground and for you to mine shafts with a line tool like how paths are made and hopefully fences in the future. There could be various widths for technologies in the future like extra wide shafts for minecarts (or tunnels with trains perhaps but that is FAR later into development.) You could also have parts that would allow you to make stair or ladder rooms to go up or down a level to make more compact or deeper mineshafts. The way the terrain works currently actually really works with with that level system as when your dig out a secondary entrance it will be on a level already to match the tunnel networks. A MAJOR issue with this though is how the camera system would work... I could imagine a top down view working pretty well when building the tunnels however I feel like that might not fit the game. (I wouldn't have an issue with it but others may.) Of course you can always do your standard 1st person view to walk around the mines if you want to but that wouldn't work when trying to make mineshafts I think. Edit: I guess maybe you could still do your 1st person view if you could somehow make it look like you were actually underground and not just floating under the world and seeing through the ground. Another thing I thought of though is that this system would actually allow you to dig below sea level as all you would need to do is not render water underground... I say that as if it is easy when I actually know hardly anything about game development but I do believe that should be achievable. But going far underground would allow you to find metals that you normally wouldn't which I think would be cool... Of course it would probably be behind some kind of research that would allow you to brace your tunnels or something to prevent collapse.
