7 Years With a Moto Guzzi V7

So once upon a time, I went against all my sportsbike instincts and got myself a rather charming brand new 2012 Moto Guzzi V7 Stone in matt black, and it turned my biking world upside down!
I have had this bike 7 years now, and through thick and thin, the bike has always been reliable and fun.
The Moto Guzzi V7 comes in several different variants; the V7 Classic, V7 Stone, V7 Racer, V7 Special, V7 Rough, V7 Anniversario, V7 Carbon & the V7 Milano. It has gone through several generations of the V7: V7ii, V7iii. I wonder what the V7iv will be like, or if it will retain the 750cc configuration as the V85 seems to be a natural progression!
I am not very good at bike reviews, so this may not be your cup of tea, but please rest assured, that if you have not already taken a test ride on a Moto Guzzi V7, you really ought to!
My Moto Guzzi V7 has been very much modified since I first got it. It now sports Kineo tubeless wire spoke wheels, K-Tech front fork cartridges, Hagon rear shocks, Renthal bars, MotoGadget Micro Dash, a chopped down rear subframe and custom seat as well as custom paint and underseat mural, to some it maybe a little hipster and impractical, but to me the built not bought has me with a totally unique motorcycle that shows up bikes it has no business biting the ankles of on track as well as the street!
If you have not done so already, do take a look over at my other social media, I am active on Twitter, Facebook & Instagram, & you'll get sneak peeks into possible upcoming videos that may interest you!

You know how much I adore that bike man, I love the stock ones, I love your one and I love the overall look. It's a bike I'd love to ride and own one day, I imagine it makes you feel how my Magna feels riding around, which is just like an absolutely cool human :) Reviewing videos are hard, I'd make way more of them if they weren't :D I actually quite like a smattering of voice over videos, they just add something different :) I also love older bikes with no assists - just more engaging to ride :) Hagons are also awesome! :D I'll stop now this comment is growing legs :D "Mine drinks the fuel now" - Bring it to petrolheads anonymous. The Magna visited, flipped a table and marched out while downing a bottle of 110 octane fuel :D It works for some I hear, Lord Vader might see some success :P I must look into Renthals for the Magna too!! I'd buy it if I could :'(

I think you'd make it look like a monkey bike ya giant gorilla! :D There is definitely a feeling of love when I throw my leg over the saddle and it never fails to bring a smile to my face when riding it. I wish I had proof watched the video after rendering it before binning the original footage and voice over audio as I would have gotten the levels far easier on the ear, soz for any blown out speakers! :D I think I am just about able to manage an overview rather than a review with my scatty brain hahaha Rider aids are aces... but it is lovely having one without them all. Is another reason for me to keep it rather than sell it on as I'll not be able to buy one without them now. Hahaha... Hi, my name is Lord Vader and I am a fuelaholic :D

@@HippoDrones An awesome Monkey bike! :D You can tell on camera man :) Audio sounded fine on my headphones! Maybe on speakers there were issues but not for me :) Ah stop, I usually forget have I locked the door 5 seconds after I've walked away from it, adulting is hard even after all these years :D They are definitely for daily bikes and such. That said neither of my bikes have any and I love them both :) Very true everything is standard now really! Haha ..... sadly true for your pocket eh :P

I’ve had nearly 30 bikes over 40 years of riding inc 6cyl’s, sidecars, tourers, 2 strokes etc and my Moto Guzzi V7III is fantastic, air cooled real world riding bliss. You are right that on paper stats doesn’t equal riding pleasure, big powerful bikes are just frustrating as you can’t use the performance AND keep your licence and crash rate down. It has a useful tank size for more remote riding like Australia, sounds great, looks like a motorbike and you can make it your own. (PS my family farmed Brands Hatch before it was a racetrack).
@HippoDrones

30 bikes in 40 years is quite impressive, as is the selection of types! :-) I do love the power and modern handling of the sportier bikes, but they all really lack that character and as you say, how much of that power can we actually use on the road, and us mrtals can barely make the bikes sweat on track too! Oh wow, that is an awesome family history!

Glad you have had so many years of use out of her, it sounds like the rides it has been on haven’t exactly been the easiest 💪 I bet swinging her around tracks has been a hell of experience 👍 here’s to looking forward to the future to see what happens to her

Love it, Cracking looking bike. Loved my Guzzi - but that was a V50 about 30 years ago!!! Old and nackred when I bought it and old and slightly less knackered when I sold it. Loved the sideways rock when you blipped the throttle and the little lift from the rear when you let the clutch out. Quirky and gret fun.

Enjoyed the vlog. After 30 years road riding I have recently got into Moto Guzzi. I had a V7 for a bit and then my V9 bobber sport. Its really very impressive. The (on paper) lack of power isnt a problem in the real world. Its got plenty for giggles. I would defenitely say dont be put off by pure stats.
@HippoDrones
@HippoDrones 4 года назад
Hi J, thanks for the feedback! :-) You have been riding a similar amount of time to myself, I imagine you have had some varied machinery in that time too? :-) Def more than enough giggles, I am contemplating a more racier bike, not to replace the V7 necessarily, but to add to my riding experiences... weirdly though I am not after a 200+ BHP monster, more something upto 100BHP that I can ride properly.... on the road, and even on track, there is not many folk who can use the power of the current superbikes! :-)

Yea with you. I've done the Hayabusa & ZZR things, tried big Harleys, tourers and pretty much most things in between. I think the Guzzi is doing its own thing TBH and I like that. I Like the simplicity and charm i suppose, of enjoying it for what it is. The top speed performance is probably no better than say a 60's Norton or Bonneville but we all know they were fast enough to have fun on! Anyhow. Good luck finding the sportier machine, there's a lot of choice out there, depending upon cashola of course.....

Definitely worth changing the tyres from Sport Demons, it does make a real difference to the handling on both dry and wet roads. I had Conti RA3s which were brilliant and am now on Metzler Roasters. Happy and safe Riding.

So pleased with my decision to go Moto Guzzi last year for my first proper bike, a new V7 Centenario. Feels like plenty of power for the road, in fact I love it that you can sometimes fully exploit it and wouldn’t want more, other than for boasting purposes. The only issue is all the aftermarket goodies available for earlier models are not available yet, except Mistral pipes at a very premium price. Hope and expect to still be enjoying mine in seven years for sure.

@@shmac96 Sorry for the very slow response, YT is rubbish with notifications sometimes. A while back I did actually do a full walk around without the 360 camera, but the bike is continuously being modified, and has changed quite a bit since this video was made too! :-) On track the bike is so much fun, I can't wait to get some better tyres fitted as the Sport Demons are fine once up to temp, but take ages to get to that happy point, often not even getting to it on the road, I guess that is why a lot of folk don't like them and swap them out quite quickly. As for must have bolt ons, budget is the key there.... out the box entirely standard my year of the V7 was an amazing bike, I've not yet ridden a V7iii to compare. For exhausts though, get some Mistrals, they are beautiful, and the bikes love them, compared to the pipes fitted in this video, I have gained between 5-10mph top speed, no joke, just by fitting a set of Mistral exhausts. The Renthal bars I have fitted in this video also are great and reduce vibe to your hands. I don't think I have ever taken a passenger on mine, and now can't as I have no pillion seat or footpegs lol :D Tell them to get their own bike and loser buys the cakes! :D I have done a day trip to Cornwall on this and back for "lunch, 650 mile round trip, the journey was fine, but the next 2 days after I was walking like John Wayne! :D When it was standard, I toured Europe on it, around 2500 miles over 11 days iirc with the longest day in the saddle being around 450 miles and it did them no problem, and I loved every single day of that trip!

@@HippoDrones Awesome! No worries about the late response! Sounds like you've put the bike thru it's paces. I ask about passenger because I 'ave me lady friend to think about....on occasion. Re the Mistrals that's very good to know! I had one guy on YT tell me in no uncertain terms that the Agostini pipes were the best choice due to where they were made and to them being better suited to the bike based on it serving the classic lines of the bike best compared with others. He couldn't tell me if they offered any performance gains like the Mistrals and the Guzzitechs. Loved that you have travelled with it as much as you have! Maybe do some stretching to counteract the John Wayne syndromes :) lol! Look forward to another video of yours! Safe travels! Cheers!

@@shmac96 I think regarding what pipes suit what bike better etc is very subjective. I absolutely love the Mistrals I have fitted now, they sound lovely, and the bike is at least 10mph faster at the top end since fitting them compared to the exhausts I had fitted previously. I'd love to do another trip on the bike, but I have made it too impractical for touring now, so will have to do it on a different bike instead :-)

The grin factor has never been replicated. Got offers for the bike every time I rode it, and one day, in a weak moment, sold it for very silly money. Despite it, like the V7, having low numbers, modest suspension and ye old englishlike hingled-in-the middle frame over a ton, owning a fleet of fabulous bikes since then, and now owning 3 far more capable and great bikes, to say I miss that bike every day is an understatement...Massive regret.

Very good and honest video You are right. Tons of smiles per mile. It's a gentlemans Sunday B road bike not a sportsbike. I have had a V50II, V50III and now my V7 III 2018 for 5 yrs. Tons of character and you have to learn to ride in a more relaxed fashion. The rear brake is not that great in my opinion but the front brake is plenty adequate. The biggest upgrade you could do is to replace the OEM Pirelli sport demons by some Conti Road Attack 3s or similar. I have 23 000Km without any problems. Handle bar vibrations can be annoying for some on long distance can be taken care of by adding simply foam grips. It' s a bike that you can customize easily and maintenance is a breeze.
@HippoDrones
@HippoDrones 9 месяцев назад
Thank you 🙂 Def not a sportsbike, but I've had more fun on track on this little V7 than I have had on thoroughbred superbikes! Your V7 has ABS, which I imagine mutes the rear brake massively, although I think ABS on bikes overall is a good thing, I do also think it takes something away from the feel of a bike, sadly diluting the experience. I've not got Pirelli Phantom Sportcomp tyres fitted to my V7, the rear being a 150 as opposed to the stock 130... Much better grip and feel over the Sport Demons, but not as nimble handling. I actually like the Sport Demons when they are up to temperature, but before that they verge on dangerous, especially in the wet on white lines etc. Ha, you mention bar vibes... I've now got V7 Racer clip-on bars fitted, the vibes are not nice, makes the stock rubber mounted bars seem like luxury compared! 😀

Sitting so upright though does mean you are in it more than I am on my Street Triple 765R which has a tiny bikini fairing and a slightly more tucked riding position. I am happy holding on all day at 80mph on the V7, but sitting at max speed does mean I have to hold on tight so it can get tiring quite quickly, especially into a headwind. I traded in a Ducati Streetfighter S for the V7, now that was a bike that you needed to bace yourself in the wind! hahaha :D I have had so much fun on this bike, especially on track biting at the heels of faster sportsbikes! :D

Having the same power as a 500cc is not the whole story. The bigger 750cc is less stressed and has a longer power band, ridiculously long really - from maybe 2000 to over 7000. I actually found the Tigger 800, with double the power, not as quick and capable on a fast but bumpy B-road, mainly because I had to keep juggling the gears, and then because its road holding wasn't so good. It's all very well having more power but it has to be useable power. Weight-wise it's around the same as any other in its class, ballpark 200kg wet, yet with a low CofG. Easily fast enough to lose your licence even two-up.

@@HippoDrones - planning a car overtake can be clock the tacho, check your shoulder, change /up/ then open the throttle. not on mine it won't, mine tops out at around 100mph in 6th it does rev quite nicely though. I think if I keep the bike (which I undoubtedly will), then some proper exhausts are needed and maybe an ECU flash to get it fuelling properly. Should get some MPG back then as well! :-)

Regarding power, from what I've been able to find out - the V7(1) was 48bhp, the V7ii (mine) was "a bit more" (but MG never gave factory figures), and the V7iii is 52bhp. Having ridden the 2 & 3 I found the V7ii a bit quicker because the torque comes in much earlier and the motor is more flexible. Which rather goes to show that power figures, alone, are not the whole story. The brakes are Bremo's finest, the two companies having a very long good relationship, and their factories are something like 15km apart.

Hi, the bike has been super reliable, no issues with engine mounts. I try and avoid potholes as my wheels were very expensive. With standard footpegs, you shouldn't have too much vibes, if you have rearsets fitted (which I have done so since recording this video), then you will notice a lot of vibes annoyingly from the footpegs. I have also fitted clip-on handlebars and again, I get a lot of vibes from them too. But if you have the standard rubber footpegs, they should absorb a lot of the vibrations. It is a v-twin though, and that means some vibes are normal, Ducati, Harley, etc, all have vibes, especially the air colled ones! :-) I have had upgraded suspension fitted for around 4 years now, and my ride is sporty firm, but well damped and the bike holds it's line well.

I did look into wiring it myself as it would have been a lot cheaper, and if you have some rudimentary understanding of electrics then it would have been possible. I do know that folk have tried and had issues with getting it to remember the mileage and the clock, but it is def possible to do yourself, it comes with instructions to do the wiring yourself, you just need to be able to interrogate the bikes loom, I imagine the owners manual will have a basic circuit diagram to help with it.

What a beauty. Never have ridden one. But if I look at your vid you enjoy it very much. I use my bike for commuting 170 kilometres a day. I ride a gs1200 now wich is a nice bike. But I am getting older and may consider a lighter bike in the future. Moto Guzzi always had my interest but never was sure about the reliability of MG. Then again like I said, I've never ridden one. Your paint of the bike is more then beautifull. Something not important but really want to ask. What is the topspeed of your V7? Ride safe!
@HippoDrones
@HippoDrones 4 года назад
I very much do Vicent. I think in standard form it would make a very good bike to commute on, it has a big fuel tank and a standard bike is good on fuel. My one will just about do 100mph, but it isn't tuned for the exhausts fitted and it used to be able to do around 110mph. I am thinking about getting better exhausts for it, but I love the look of the current ones.

I have a V7 Classic and is making an awful sound on the right cylinder I think I have to do the valve adjustment. I bought It with 20.000 km and I made in three years 10.000 km more so I think that could be the problem with that sound because I do not think is the pipe exhaust...could be?? Because of that, I have been searching and I felt in love with the Griso model 😅 what do you think? Could you do a comparison?
@HippoDrones
@HippoDrones 4 года назад
Hi Rous Rider, have you checked your oil level? if low the right cylinder could be not getting enough oil when on the side stand? Def worth giving it a full service and valve check. A lot of people love the Griso, sadly it is no longer sold in the UK though so unless I found one with an owner who was happy to loan it I'd not be able to ride one I don't think.

@PaulAnthonyDuttonUk
@PaulAnthonyDuttonUk 3 года назад
@@HippoDrones - Yeh, big bore kit.. Guessing the extra torque might add to the precession on the crank anyway which you would not want coming out of corners. Might add too much heat to the cylinders too. Ultimately it’s much more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow so inclined to agree with you.
@HippoDrones
@HippoDrones 3 года назад
@@PaulAnthonyDuttonUk there is a company in the USA that does big-bore kits and his customers seem very happy with them, the cost is very prohibitive for me in the UK though and ultimately it wouldn't make the bike any faster unless it allowed for higher revs which would alter the character of the V7 engine 🙂

I have a few questions for the modern day V7 (small block) owners... 1) Does the V7 engine have an automatic cam chain tensioner? (my 1983 850 Le Man II 'big block' didn't have a spring loaded tensioner, so it was a pain to deal with and didn't do many miles before the chain would rub against the engine case). 2) Does the V7 engine have a good reputation for tappet wear? I've read that the modern day 'big block' engines with 4 valve heads suffered tappet wear, and owners are advised to retrofit roller rockers. I've been Guzziless since 1986 and I'm a bit out of touch with how the brand has evolved since the early 80s, so I would be keen to get a modern day V7 small block, but ONLY if there's no serious mechanical issues.
@HippoDrones
@HippoDrones 4 года назад
I'm no spanner monkey, probs best to join a Facebook group for the modern Moto Guzzi bikes, there are some great ones, including some V7 specific. The only issue I've had with this bike that was not my own doing, was a bit of clutch slip in 2013 in hot Monaco traffic. It has been fine since and has had a pasting on track too. I've not heard of any folk having engine issues. Only common fault some have reported is the final drive seals giving up.
