A tip when doing any sort of neck-work that needs taping the fretboard: Run one or two strips of tape along the sides of the neck, just below the frets before taping the fingerboard. When you finish your job, just pull one of the side-tapes and the rest covering the fretboard will come off at the same time.
Great info on the Fender mismatched headstock finish. I purchased a late 70's Strat with this same condition. I did a bunch of research to find out why the headstock had such a different appearance then the neck! I thought someone had monkeyed with it, over the years. Very relieved to find out that it was factory correct from Fender. Good bit of history, there.
Dave, I've been learning lutherie the last couple of years. I have an acoustic to set up tonight. I love doing this work while your video's on. Sometimes we're doing the same things , sometimes not, but I always learn. Thanks. {patreon here i come}
2 things Dave. 1...Your videos are an epic learning tool. Ive picked up so much from you. And 2...Your comedy factor is a great relief from my chronic depression. Keep up the epic work and thank you for the videos.
That "flapper tool" you use is for applying Bondo to metal surfaces in autobody work - the same way a carpenter would use a putty knife to squeeze a straight surface across a wall.
6:24 Contender for Dave quote of the year: "Somedays, I can't seem to wash my hands enough". Sometimes I look at these guitars in wonder and amazement, only to ponder how someone could let THAT much personal lubricant dry on their P-bass.
I bought one just like that in about 74 when I was 15 years old, We use the take off the thumb rest and install them exactly were that one is, it use to come new right under the G string you can see the two holes were it was mounted from the factory sold it in about 78 with a 370 acoustic bass amp for $300, looking at this one I swear it was mine but I doubt it but it looks likes mine.
Long videos good. You got me servicing my old guitars now, all of them... The least you can do is make more long videos! So there!! On the good side.. My old fretless is singing like a bird again "mwahh"-ing all over the place 8^)
It's a shame to see such an awesome bass like the Precision bass being all torn up and beaten up only for someone like Dave to come in and restore the P Bass back to the glory it deserves.
I'm with you on the manual polishing mate, you can also feel if there are still scratches on the fret. It's the difference between pride in your work and just trying to earn more money mate
Dave - Put a long strip of tape along the length of the fret board. Then you can pull the tape off of each fret in one fell swoop. Just a humble suggestion.
long videos!!!, those who really want to learn of your videos want the real things, the problems and the weird stuff. Thank for sharing your experiences!!!
The club sounds super cool. That's how you do it. More clubs should do this. It doesn't have to even be Eddie Kramer level. Equipment on a budget for A/V production is in maximum supply these days. You may not get Eddie Kramer level results, but you can definitely get quality content if you know what you're doing. Anyway, sounds cool. :)
If you are looking for a marker that writes on metal try a GPX. Wont wipe off or wash off man it sticks to metal. Course, it comes in a bunch of colors I just found out. Your favorite blue too. But, they are for Serious Metal work for marking. It will take sanding to get them off the metal so go easy if you get some.
Longer is just fine. Kinda feels like we're just hangin' with you while you do all the work. So longer is good as long as you're not just mostly jawing and goofing around for half of it like they do on That Pedal Show or Anderson's stuff. Plenty of good info on both of those too - when they get around to actually discussing and demoing any of it. ;-)
My Fender is a 70 Precision neck and the pots on the jazz body are stamped 76. Generic neck plate. Really wish I knew this bass's story. Either way I really dig it.
WHen is part two coming? Soon I hope sitting on the edge...hehe..Anyway, what happened to that acoustic and the others in the cases? Never saw what became of them. The truss rod missing etc? Did you do a folowup on those?
So Dave, what's your opinion on the PJ SS bass? Should I get it for the heck of it, something to goof around on? I'm not about to be invited into a band, but I'm curious. I'd bring it up to you to check out, but I got arrested in 1978 because I was an asshat kid and your country now hates me.
In 1976 they started putting the serial number on the headstock late 76 that is so that face should not have a serial number on the neck plate unless the body is from a different year?
would using pennies as pickup foam instead of window putty be bad or worse? Would it affect the pickups in a negative creepy or goochy way? I'm asking for a friend.
1968. Same time as when they switched from the gold transition logo and small model name decals to the black, bold decals. 1971 was when they switched to three-bolt neck mount on the Strats and discontinued the maple-cap neck option.
I can't wait to see the end result for the works. I'm for longer videos too btw. Do you do only local repairs? Can someone send you a guitar out of state?
I miss the goof next door vids...They always made my day, Be cool to see some vids of the old goof talking with Eddie about the making of Electric Ladyland. LOL!
GND, Custodians of Crap, Spider Bass, the smoking-a-fatty Italian bass, the Taylor Guitar rants, Dave gets an assistant...anyone new to the community should dive into Dave's back catalog and watch these gems. The classics never get old.
Dave, had a bud owned a sign company. Using lots of petro based plastics. He told me the actual term for when foam "goes tits up". The term is, "The polymers have migrated." Fly away home little polymers... Justin Z. (°¿_°`)
The wonders of you tube I was Unsubscribed !! even though I have been subscribed for years and watch every video... Any how I'm back in and enjoy the videos just as much as always ...Cheers Dave keep on doing your thing the way only you can ...💥 oh by the way you can't get anything that works anymore (like permanent markers) in case it hurts someone or you get addicted !!! no win no fee ... lawyers must love this new age of health and safety 😠
I'm a guitar player but don't know much about bass guitars. What is the block that sits just above the strings on that bass? Is that just some kind of hand rest?
I'm about to replace the pick guard and some of the hardware on the guitar I learned the basics on. I will be especially interested in poor removal.

I own what according to the seria # on the back of the headstock is a 2010 Tele Standard, yet the neck is stamped Jan.19 2011. Can't quite wrap my head around that.
hai thanks for video , i want to ask about pickup and pots wiring, is the voltage of caps like an 160v&200v&400v&600v take effect or not for sound or its important influence or notthing???
I guess I won the lottery Davey...6 minutes and you answered. Your awesome...because of you I do some setups for some of my friends...I have 12 guitars I can keep in order ... and my friends are impressed with how they play and with the before and after pictures. I'm also learning Bass...:) keep 'er lit.
Any chance you can have Eddie Kramer come over and install your new camera mount? Maybe he can oversee your media needs and overall message to the world.
not an total expert here, (vintage 50's tele's-70's basses) but more times than not fender would throw a neck on a body within a year especially in their hay days, not necessarily made at the same time > the neck fit wasnt really made for that guitar but as long as it was a close enough neck fit , just whatever neck worked once it was finished and was playable then. That theory is a testomonial to why strats allways buzz like a freaking bastard, and you have to put a pick or shim under the neck. They never really realized about the neck tolerances, such as today where everybody makes a tele with the tightest fitting neck pocket ever.....etc etc Just a manufacturing GOOF!
You describe a kid in art class "huffing a Sharpie" and you seeing the "black ink run up his veins." That actually describes *blood poisoning." Nothing to do with huffing Sharpies. “Blood poisoning” is used to describe bacteremia, septicemia, or sepsis. You state never seeing him again. He was a VERY ill person. Sometimes when we never see severely ill people it is because they do not make it. =They *go to heaven...* Hope that was not the case for him!
