70 years of the NHS - Should we now scrap it?

The NHS is 70 years old - but is it still fit for purpose in the 21st Century and has the time come to scrap it?
The NHS now has to deal with a very different population from when it was set up. Can we still offer it free to all people? Should we encourage greater take up of private health care and should those that can afford it have to pay for NHS usage on top of existing taxation?
The NHS has become a political football with the only "answer" to throw more and more sums of money at it, but the culture of the NHS is broken. From a total neglect of proper budget management through to poor procurement and paying too much for drugs and equipment through to a culture of profligacy and utter wastage.
The only way to have a health service fit for today is to scrap it and start all over again.

I’ve worked in the NHS for 20 years, as a Nurse, in that time, I’ve noticed some wastage that is costing the public money, I’m sick of telling people to switch off computers and lights when they finished in the office, I’ve seen office staff leave the lights on all weekend, also in the corridors and toilets we have lights on 24/7, 365 days, why can’t we have auto lights, it might seem little to others, but it must be costing a lot. We used to have lots of wastage in drugs aswell, now my local trust is bringing in Omicell, this is similar to a vending machine but for drugs, you have to have the patient details and your finger print to access it, on my A&E in the first year it was estimated that we saved £100,000, another cost is giving patients Paracetamol and ibuprofen as a discharge script, that script costs £16, were you can get a box of paracetamol for 16p and ibuprofen for 32p,

Thanks for your comments and nice to hear from someone with proper front line experience. Really like the sound of the vending machine for drugs. Simple but effective idea and the sort of "best practice" that needs to be spread about. Lastly it's people like you who make the NHS cope and work as well as it can despite a flawed system. Most of the medical staff deserve medals for what they do!

I’m afraid I disagree with you. I do think the NHS is great it allows people free access to healthcare who otherwise don’t have it. I do agree with you in the aspect that throwing money isn’t going to help. The NHS is completely ineffective as they know they will be paid. I believe it should be completely rebuilt from the ground up. It should be run by businessmen like a business. The waste in the NHS is horrific. I had a similar experience My mum had to take cancer drugs for over 12 months. They kept sending the wrong drugs which were worth tens of thousands of pounds in total. Unfortunately they couldn’t be returned to the pharmacy to give to someone else as they had been delivered so had to be destroyed. Even though we never actually opened or taken receipt of them because they could have been tampered with. The beaurocrats shouldn’t be given bonuses unless the NHS meets its budgets both annually and its projects. much like a normal business. They should take payment from overseas people before treatment to cover costs rather than trying to bill afterwards and not getting paid. I also think that non essential medical procedures should be charged to the patient . By that I mean plastic surgery like Brest implants, tummy tucks etc. Being unhappy with your body is not a medical issue. Despite all of this I do think at its core it is a fantastic service. The frontline staff are overworked and underpaid. They really do care but don’t have enough time to do their jobs correctly.

I think we kind of agree on the main substantive point that it needs a radical rethink and new way of provision. Thanks for watching.

LoL You Do like poking the Hornets Nest! I've had personal dealings with NHS management as well as staff but I can't really say much about that on here, apart from the supply companies really love squeezing the goose that lays the golden eggs, also the consultants only need to cover their NHS quota then they are laughing all the way to the bank!

Thanks for watching. I guess I do poke it a bit, but then it would be boring and there would be no debate!!!
