Seventy years ago this week WBZ-TV went on the air for the first time. It was a challenge, but one the station's owners were determined to meet, WBZ-TV's David Wade reports.
WBZ-TV was in a race against WNAC Channel 7 and WNHC Channel 6 (later Channel 8) New Haven to be the first commercial TV station in New England. WBZ won the race, beating WNHC by six days to be the first commercial TV station in New England, and beat WNAC by twelve days to become the first commercial TV station in Boston. I use the term "first commercial TV station" because there had been experimental TV broadcasts in Boston as far back as the late 1920's.
