I really enjoy your videos it’s giving me the confidence to rebuild my 700 R4

Thanks, Matthew...I have no doubt you can take on the work as long as you're able to free up the time...I use 50-75 PSI when air checking individual drums, etc and 75-100 PSI when doing case air checks.

I would like your opinion. The captured bearing under the servo on my transmission is missing. In your opinion is this good or bad. Why would someone want to leave it out? Also what is the name or part number of the tool I will need to install one? So far so good on the build! Thanks for the videos!

Nick..Update...I rebuilt my transmission today, 3-4 clutch pack frictions were burned up as suspected. Had to learn and play with the steel plate "thickness" to get the desired snap ring clearances. When all was done...nothing binding, turns and feels great. Only soaked the band...did not soak the frictions. I don't have a micrometer to check end play...but it's just a very slight movement 1/32 of an inch or a hair less....So I'm calling mine 30 thousands. Good enough for an old 1989 GMC farm truck. I'm, not a 17 thousands expert like you. I was happy with my outcome being my first transmission rebuild. Could not have done it without all your 700R4 rebuild detailed tutorials-videos. Thanks

I am currently stuck and kind find any answers to the issue holding me up currently. The torque converter will not fit the pump. I went back to the parts store and we did not find another which would fit. The diameter of the torque converter, I'll call it a yoke? Is 1 13/16 and the pump is 1 11/16.roughly.

Although you said you were going to install the case bushing at the end of one of your videos, I never saw it. I'd like to see and hear that as I'm fixing to start that process....

I'm having trouble getting the low reverse piston snap ring in. I've used every snap ring tool I have and some of my friends as well, any advice on getting it in? I've never had this much of an issue with a snap ring of all things!
@nickstransmissions
@nickstransmissions 3 месяца назад
A few of them can be really difficult, for whatever reasons and, even with the correct tools, can take a while to fully seat/install. I'd take the piston back out to confirm it did not go in slightly cocked in the bore as well as to confirm you didn't cut one of the rubber sealing rings. If it is that difficult to install, that may be a possibility.

@@nickstransmissionsI took the piston out, everything was good. I wound up spreading the snap ring apart and got it in, not something I like doing but it seems to have worked.

Cool, glad you didn't damage those seals...Every once in a while, I get one in that requires that and yes, it's not ideal but sometimes you have to do what you have to do...I've never broken one of those snap rings, they are pretty durable.

I have enjoyed your videos, I'm currently working on my wifes 85 Trans am that's been sitting for approx.. 22 years..... It was parked before I knew her. The car has almost 200k trans tv cable was way out of adjustment. Got that adjusted still has hard 1-2 and 2-3 shifts, I can't say about 3-4 or overdrive because I have only driven it on short trips (no plates) have not dropped the pan yet. Fixed the speedo and output leaks. Fluid leaking out was bright red. Suggestions on what to look for, governor.... tv valve? Is a 200k tranny worth messing with or better off getting another?
@nickstransmissions
@nickstransmissions 7 месяцев назад
Hey Randy, thank you for watching! Glad you are enjoying them...My advice - drive it and see what happens...it may work perfectly fine or you may have issues but won't know until you get a complete drive cycle in (1-2-3-4-3-2-1 and R)...Worst case scenario, there's problems and if so, you simply pull it out and rebuild it...

So I have successfully rebuild my transmission. It works well. Only thing is at light throttle input the 1-2 shift occurs at 10mph is this normal? When accelerating 1/2 pedal the 1-2 occurs at 15mph
@nickstransmissions
@nickstransmissions 9 месяцев назад
Congrats on the rebuild, man! 10-15mph is normal part throttle shifting, they tend to shift a little bit earlier than the 4L06Es assuming equivalent stock set ups/trans control. If your pressure test results are in good agreement with what line pressures should be then you can always tweak your governor for a bit later shifts if it's too early.

Hi Thomas - good catch; I'm guilty as charged. Here are my thoughts on why I don't soak my frictions (though I do soak my bands): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2j6XYCblG5I.html Thank you for watching!

im rebuilding a 700r4 from a 1988 corvette, I see the first set of clutches in the housing doesnt have the same amount of steels that I pulled out of this transmission. What am I missing if you have any thoughts? these 2 steels are thicker than the ones between the friction discs
@nickstransmissions
@nickstransmissions 8 месяцев назад
Hi Donny, you need to be a bit more specific...what housing and clutch pack are you referring to? The forward drum and 3-4 pack or something else?
@donnyz06
@donnyz06 8 месяцев назад
low reverse clutch set. the first set installed in the housing @@nickstransmissions
@nickstransmissions
@nickstransmissions 8 месяцев назад
Ok...For most of us in the industry, the term "housing" is usually associated with a drum, center support or another type "container" within the transmission. You want to use the word "case" to describe the transmission itself. The 1988 700r4 should have five flat steels and a wavy cushion steel that goes directly on top/in front of the piston. Earlier 700r4s had a slightly taller low reverse piston and no wavy steel.

Confused..have two questions: Does the servo tip actually touch the reverse band? (i saw the band move forward against the drum) Can you remove and install the reverse band without removing the servo?
@nickstransmissions
@nickstransmissions 5 месяцев назад
Hi KnowstheFuture, No need to be confused....The servo tip does apply the band but in rest position there is sometimes a very small gap...And yes, you can install the band with the servo already installed so if you have to take out the drums to adjust for end play, there's no need to pull the servo out - you can leave it in...Just be careful when reinstalling the band as you want to keep the band anchors to the right of the servo pin so they can slide past... Also, it's not a reverse band as reverse is achieved via the concurrent application of the reverse input clutch pack and low-reverse clutch pack...The band provides 2nd and 4th gear only... Thank you for watching!
@LarsonFamilyFarm-LLC
@LarsonFamilyFarm-LLC 5 месяцев назад
@@nickstransmissions Wow, very good that answered my questions. Thank you and yes, gotcha 2nd&4th gear band; reverse achieved via clutch packs.

not sure what is causing ring gear in mine not to be able to spin at all. 23:44 I am thinking about buying a new center support clutch because im think that's what is causing it not to spin
@nickstransmissions
@nickstransmissions 8 месяцев назад
Disassemble the trans and put the center support on the bench to confirm/deny you're able to spin the inner race clockwise and have it lock counterclockwise...If it does so, the roller assembly is fine and the problem is elsewhere...To trouble-shoot, simply assemble the gear train on the bench and see where the bind/restriction is happening - closely inspect all splines, gears and other mating surfaces.
@bessberr7978
@bessberr7978 8 месяцев назад
@@nickstransmissions so what I noticed is as soon as i put the snap ring on it will not allow it to move. The snap ring is giving enough force down not allowing the clockwise spin. Do I need to hammer things down more?
@nickstransmissions
@nickstransmissions 8 месяцев назад
Are you talking about the center support snap ring? Are you trying to assemble the gear train on the bench or is it still in the case? The center support itself doesn't rotate in the case at all by hand (it moves against the anti-clunk spring or case saver while in operation).
@bessberr7978
@bessberr7978 8 месяцев назад
@@nickstransmissions The ring gear rotates clockwise but not counter clock as soon as i put the center support snap ring on it stops moving. Not sure what is causing this
@nickstransmissions
@nickstransmissions 8 месяцев назад
Re-read my initial response posted this AM and let me know what you come up with once you have all the gear train parts back on the bench. Also, see if you accidentally put the rear case-rear ring gear thrust bearing on backwards...If so, that would push all the guts forward in the case and could be causing your bind up.
