Maya Plisetskaya became Prima Ballerina Assoluta of the Bolshoi Theater in 1960, one of only 16 ballet dancers ever given this supreme title. The young ballerina was glorified by the role of Odette-Odile in Swan Lake, which she performed when she was only 22 years old. A unique feature of her performance was free, as if boneless, wing-like arms. These arms made iconic her performance of the The Dying Swan, in which Plisetskaya “floated out” from behind the curtains with her back to the audience. She was mesmerizing.
Music: "Song For Johanna" by Franz Gordon
Born November 20, 1925, Maya Plisetskaya / Майя Плисецкая was a Russian ballet dancer, frequently cited as the greatest ballerina of the modern era. When she was very young, her family was ravaged by the Stalinist purges. However, Maya was encouraged by her artistic family to pursue dance and ballet. She was admitted to the Moscow Choreographic School, which produces most of the Bolshoi Ballet dancers, a year earlier than her classmates. She excelled in her studies and when accepted to the Bolshoi Theater ballet company as a soloist, completely bypassing the corps. This was highly unusual but very indicative of the enormous talent Plisetskaya possessed.
Maya chaffed against the oppressive regime of the Soviet Union. During the 1950s, she was not allowed to travel abroad with the Bolshoi company, due to her strong will and individualist attitude. Yet her talent was undeniable. She rose to the top of the ballet world with her dancing. After a career which spanned six decades, she retired as a soloist and focused her attention towards teaching the next generation of ballet dancers.
Maya Plisetskaya died May 2, 2015 at the age of 90.

The goal wasn't to raise her foot up to the sky, then. But to really interpret a part. Nobody ever moved her arms as she did. I was lucky to see her dance Béjart's bolero. She was fantastic. Thank you Pam for this compilation. ❤

One of strengths is Maya's ability to act the role, to portray the character she is dancing, not just do the steps. While I think her body is truly exceptional, there are dancers who do portray the character at such a high level, Makarova and Vishneva come to mind in my limited knowledge.

Thank you dear Rania! I have pondered this question over and over and all I can come up with is that younger dancers sometimes seem to be more interested in less abstract aspects of ballet. Like, who's leg goes higher,. how many pirouettes can you do, what step can you add to your fouettes for further pizazz. The measurable "tricks" so to speak. And these things do have their place in ballet, but they should not come at the expense of the BEAUTIFUL, less concrete things ballet can evoke in the soul of the observer... the emotions, the feelings, the message. These things, in my opinion, are the sprinkles on the cupcake of ballet.

@@PamBoehmeSimon I agree, but there are those who dance with heart/soul. To me Sergei and Osipova are captivating because of the emotional intensity of their performances. They simply 'are' the stories they tell (for me)😃

Maya was of a beauty, of a smoothness, that of grace, of talent. Made for dancing, she had the sacred fire, fortunately, that allowed her to extract herself from a cruel destiny. His aunt was a teacher and a mentor, a second mother. Maya was the dance :)) I like his distinction, his natural class, sophisticated just enough to get over humiliations, skilful and noble like mountain ibexes jumping over crevices. Sensational 71 times. Exceptional. As I also love the late prima ballerina Alexander Godunov, I always enjoy seeing them both dancing in Carmen : )) With gratefuness for sharing my very dear and talented too Pam Boheme, Friendly, Joe from Lausanne, Switzerland

When she is dancing the role of Carmen (I think that's what she dancing at the 3:59 mark) she knows how to sell the role. Her portrayal is captivating. She is Carmen, if I have that correctly. Who is her partner, Pam, do you know? What they had together is magic. So far I've watched it twice.

I could not agree with your assessment more, spot on! I believe that is none other than Alexander Godenov. They danced Carmen together many times. So, so happy you are enjoying. She is remarkable and I can't help but want to do what I can to showcase the legend that she is to more and younger generations of dancers for just the reasons you stated.
