Good think'n on making the building larger than first thought. It'll fill up so fast that you'll wish it was larger. Watching you brings to me fond memories of working with my Dad when I was a kid. At 73, that was many years ago.

A lot of people are commenting that you should use a set of wheels on the end of the log when you drag it out of the woods, but wouldn’t that make it Dollywood? 😁 Always love to see the start of construction on a building, great start and should go quick with the warmer weather and longer days. Hey Hunter ✋🏻👴🏻

Mike, I laughed so hard when you said, "We're Not Building A Watch, Right"?! My Dad passed away one month after I turned 13 back in 1972. So after that, I spent a lot of time hanging out with our next-door neighbor who I had lived there all my life, and became A Father Figure to me. I helped him do a lot of projects together until he passed away in the mid-'90s. His favorite saying was, "We're Not Building A Clock"!! Thanx Mike, that brought back Memories from some of the Best Times of my life!!!! Cap Cincinnati Oh

Wow! Great video Mike and Melissa! It looks like you're getting a lot of questions about sackcreat in the post hole's without water! It's been a common practice here in the Tri-state area ever since I can remember! The reason I do it dry is when you leave the sackcreat dry, you can plumb the pole and tamp it firm! The mix draws moisture over time and sets it! I hope this helps! Have a Day!

Hi Mike & Melissa You might want to rethink the way you are setting your posts. I was taught many years ago that you should only put your cement in the bottom of the hole as to create a foundation, and not surrounding the post. Then before you place the post in the ground, fasten a short piece of 2 X at a 90 degree angle to the post and then put your pole into the hole and tamp with dirt. The cross section will keep the post from pulling out and not having the cement surrounding the post, water will not be trapped between the cement and the post. Also, it has been shown that the chemicals in the concrete will have a tendency to react with the MCA (Micronized Copper Azole) used to treat the lumber.

A good friend of mine tells me when I'm measuring real close, "We're not cutting diamonds here" I'll try to get him to switch to your line "we're not building a watch here" Great comment! You said "I'm going to set some post for a shed, then you started pounding stakes in the ground". My 1st thought was wow, that's gonna be a short shed. LOL Many thanks for all you and Melissa do. 👍

Nice technique. That dry concrete will set up nicely as the moisture in the ground wicks in. By the way, Lowes has an expansive foam package (all in one, no water needed) for fence posts. Wonder if it would work in this situation too. Thanks for your tips. I inherited a small tractor with the purchase of our new home on a small acreage and am learning much from you about this great tool.

No water is ok, will set up in days or hours if ground is wet. I worked for Morton Buildings for 15 years many years ago and every building we built used dry mix. What you should do is add galvanized angle plates at bottom sides to prevent up lift.

Not try to tell you how to do it, but just to mention some differences in my post setting technique. Soon as auger is out of the hole, I take an iron rake or hoe and pull back the loose soil. Does two things: 1. it's not falling back in the hole 2. re-exposes true ground level for rough measurement at the next step which is the clamshell digger. OK next. After tamping, bottom of hole, I use a nice flat-ish stone that's about the size of the hole and a solid several inches think. That's the footing. Post sits in next. My wife isn't a Melissa type, so I'm on my own, and I use angle bracing to hold it pretty close to location. Then goes a couple shovels of crushed stone, tamp, watching position and plumb. That'll hold it well enough to throw in the bag of concrete. Oh yeah, I also drive in a bunch of nails or screws to lock into the concrete before the post went in. Finally, I have (had) one of those plastic post levels. Mine just wasn't good enough. It will be OK with a nice, sharp, straight edge and two nice plane faces under it. My posts are usually challenged in this regard.

Mike: I know you said that three-point post hole digger is your least favorite implement. Wish I had that last year when my brother and I had to dig a bunch of holes for a wood shed. We rented a two-man auger. The torque on that thing was unbelievable with a 12" bit. Each of us weighs 200 lbs., and it twisted us around like ragdolls! 🤕 Of course, I am sure Melissa would have had no trouble with it!💪

Hello Mike and Melissa. Here in Denmark it is calendar vise spring now as of the 1st of March. Many ways to determine spring and if we take the Metrological definition the temperature (in Centigrade) should follow the clock so at 9 o´clock it should be 9 degrees ( 48 F), 10 o´clock it should be 10 degrees (50 F)and 12 o´clock it should then be 12 degrees (53.6 F) - that will take some time yet before we are there - maybe 2 weeks or so, but definitely lighter now here. We do not turn the clock here until the 29th of March. Have a day over there 😀

8X8 shed is the size the Amish use for their phone shacks. There is enough room for the phone, av desk to write on and a chair. I'm glad you went with 8X24. The Amish are all boiling sap today. There is talk that the sap is beginning to get cloudy and the red maples are budding out, all signs of our spring time. This year has been a non winter with an early sugar season with too few cold nights and warmer days. The greenhouses are all ramping up, starting the starts and the rye is greening up. We may get a snow but it wont last now.

I cringed in anticipation of reading lame posts about you holding the post while Melissa dumps the heavy bag.... flashbacks of lifting rounds to the splitter. So far I haven’t read any though so yay! I kept waiting for you to add water although I recalled you saying the frost would be seeking out of the ground. Ultimately I looked up dry-setting posts and waddya know! Sure there’s differing opinions but on which topic isn’t there. I’m looking forward to this build because I’ve already outgrown my 18x21 metal building and just cleared a spot next to it for an 18x24 lean to that I thought I’d build myself.
