I used to have a 1973 super Beetle. Mine was a bit weird though it had an electric solenoid that was like a clutch when the solenoid was engaged you could shift it like a 4 speed manual transmission. I bought it from a guy for $500 and he kept saying you are going to lose money on this actually I lost no money put new heads on the engine cleaned up the engine sealed gaskets it was leaking oil when I got it, it wasn't after i sold it 5 yrs later though. A maintenance man needed a tow vehicle for his rv so I sold it to him for $750. First and last time I ever owned a Volkswagen.

Those pumps are only that loud when they have air/no gas. Likely you had an air pocket? Possibly the pump was hot when you shut it off and it vapor locked?

Kenny, do you have a VOA meter? If so, disconnect one side of the battery, put the meter inline and check for a parasitic draw. Also, it looks to me, that your belt may have a bit too much deflection, but, I'm not sure what the spec is for a VW. You shouldn't have to keep a charger on the battery, which is why I'm thinking there's a parasitic draw happening.

I do not like electric fuel pumps. I have twin 34s on my trike and they work fine with a factory mechanical pump. I don't think that the trickle charger had any effect on it seeing as your alternator is putting out 13 volts when running.
