Gee I didn't see it that way. I always thought it was placed on the set to show they entertained from time to time and this made a perfect prop for the bum. I never took Lucy for a drunk. The commercial got her drunk but she was unaware it was alcohol. Enjoyed the video Rick.

I agree with the scenario that the bottles were placed there for the bum to consume as he did. Insinuating that Lucy deliberately drank would be out of bounds for the show. Unlike Vitametavegamin where it was unintentional inebriation.
@Cadmandu2000
@Cadmandu2000 Год назад
I agree. It was common in that time (at least on screen) for people to have a liquor cabinet at home. If the set dressers neglected to put a liquor cabinet on set, this script which called for the "bum" to drink their liquor would not have worked if there wasn't any. Those bottles were stored on the counter as Chekhov's Gun. (Or Chekhov's Gin if you wish.) You never see them again because no other script called for alcohol to be consumed in their apartment again. Of course, that's just my guess. I could be wrong.

Love your wonderful catches, Rick. There's so much fascinating trivia around the show. I read somewhere that the stuff Lucy was drinking out of the bottle of Vitameatavegamin was actually liquid apple pectin which someone with the prop department found at a local health food store. I noticed when Lucy was on the quiz show and getting sprayed with water, her face looked different. I couldn't figure out why, but realized it's because her false eyelashes were missing. It gave her face a different look. I'm thinking the booze bottles were placed there just as props for the bum to easily access, and no other reason.
@gregoryricks1322

She looked different because Max Factor pancake makeup (which she wore religiously on this show) is water soluble, and the spray blew both her eyelashes and her makeup right off her face.

Amazing find, 9G! But I think the bottles were there for the tramp scene. But maybe as a nondescript reason, yes, Lucy had them out cause "she was stressed". Kind of how certain episodes have a table by the kitchen but other episodes have that wooden piano where the table would be (like the episode when the mertzes go home and start thumping on the ceiling so they stop playing)

Also, William Frawley's agent was a certified genius. He had it written into Bill's contract that he could miss filming any episode that conflicted with the World Series, but his claim to fame was the fact that, when he found out I Love Lucy was to be replayed (re-run) off season, he also made sure Mr. Frawley was compensated whenever an episode aired.... Enter the advent of the residual check... all, thanks to Bill Frawley's agent and Desi's brilliant idea to film (instead of tape) the episodes so they could be replayed ...

A partly empty bottle doesn't necessarily imply that it had been used at that particular moment. It just reflects that it had been consumed over the course of time which is realistic. There would have been a drinking glass somewhere on the set if they wanted to suggest that Lucy Ricardo had been drinking.

Wow, I thought I knew a lot about Tallulah but I was unaware of her ever being married! 2:31 Ethel's looking glam, even though the outfit seems tight around the waist, lol . Yes, the messed-up mentality of that period: alcohol = bad, cigarettes/cigars/pipes = good. Perhaps Lucy simply had the liquor bottles displayed on the shelf with the intention of later storing them in the appropriate cabinet. However, in the midst of doing so, she might have gotten distracted by the need to attend to the bills before Ricky arrived home or something similar. Given the previously mentioned state of disarray, this backstory seems to fit the situation perfectly-at least in my opinion.. As I recall of the episode lucy mistook The bum for being the man who was supposed to portray her first husband. Therefore, I don't think she would have left liquor bottles out for someone who she wasn't actually expecting to consume. Additionally, there was likely nothing terribly shocking about seeing liquor bottles openly displayed on a sitcom set throughout the 1950's, 1960's, and possibly even the 1970's. I am aware of a highly popular sitcom, Bewitched, in which the actors frequently consumed real liquor on screen. Furthermore, on Bewitched, costumes were only provided for the two main performers, Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York/Dick Sargent. All supporting cast members and guest stars were required to provide their own clothing and jewelry, etc., except when witches attire was necessary, which was provided, of course. Therefore, for instance, when you saw Endora (Agnes Moorehead) dressed in "civilian" clothing (Furs, dresses, shoes, jewelry.) They were all articles of Ms. Moorhead's personal wardrobe from her home.

I am impressed. I was the stage manager at a little amateur theatre for the play Come Back, Little Sheba. The director decided to have a functional kitchen. The gas range (which took a disproportionate area of the kitchen on our little stage which was too small to have a backstage area or wings) was hooked up to a 15 lb. propane bottle, the water was delivered from a pressurized tank that a volunteer cobbled together, the sink drained to a hidden tub, and the refrigerator was the theatre's own refrigerator, moved from the box office onto the set. Some of my unique duties for this play were pressurizing the water tank with a bicycle pump, turning on and off the gas bottle before and after performance, and emptying the catch tub. Because bacon or ham was actually fried on set near the end of the play, my perquisite was a hot meat sandwich after the performance. Incidentally, the theatre had no running water. My post through most of the performance was hidden within the set, so that I could turn off the gas bottle if needed for safety.

Thanks for the detective work, Rick. Agree with all those who've said the bottles were there just to advance the plot, so the bum would steal them later in the episode. Certainly having wine bottles in the apartment for guests/social drinking doesn't mean Lucy was getting drunk! The evidence this was simply related to the plot? We never see those wines bottles ever again in the hundred-plus episodes of I Love Lucy to follow.

How can Lucy be in arrears in bill payments? Ricky was a band leader for heaven's sake, they lived in a rinky-dink, single bedroom apartment in Manhattan in the 50s when rents, even in the affluent neighborhoods, were far more affordable than today. The Ricardo's were far from spendthrifts if the episodes were any indication. Turning to another topic, is it possible the bottles were there for another reason? We know John Emery's wife, Tallulah Bankhead, had a reputation of being one of the biggest souse in all of Hollywood.

When I watch a tv show, a movie, or even a stage play, I find myself looking at every detail possible. A lot is put into each production and I don’t want to miss a single thing. Another awesome video Rick! Hope Morgan Freeman caught it! 😉

Ricky was a Night Club entertainer, and as such, he drank. Maybe not a lot, but he drank. Lucy I'm sure had a "tipple" now and then. I'm sure the bottles were specifically out for the man playing the drunk bum, but it they aren't out of place for this time period and for Rickys job. As far as the other character actors, Lucy was known for wanting as many friends, family, and people she personally liked to be on her shows. This is why you see a lot of the same people over and over and over again.

WOW really people were drinking from those bottles that is so amazing. So what, and to think Lucy was drinking because they were in back of her, then you don't know Lucy Ricardo.

Was more of a accident her getting drunk in commercial. Yep! Never saw the bottles after that. You would never see them drink except anniversary. Verna Felton passed away 1 day before Walt Disney. Lucy's "situation" lends itself to Ricky's question. "What's the matter with you are cRaZy or something?"

I notice in the early episodes maybe the first season she didn't smoke maybe because she was already pregnant

I'm going a step further saying the reason Lucy was so nervous about her finances is because a drunken Ricky use to beat her after coming home from the club.

I disagree with anyone on set drinking out of those bottles. It's probable they were there and it represents they were used just like in anyone's home. And they could have been used in the past.

Those bottles were there for the scene with the tramp. Lucy was upset about the bills, but not drunk. When she got inebriated because of the alcohol in the Vitameatavegemin, she did not know it contained alcohol. You're so far off, reaching for things that aren't there.

...or these bottles and glasses lined up on the counter are the equivalent of today's bar cart. Wouldn't be so surprising that when Ricky came home at night he and Lucy may have had a cocktail. I'm not reading into it that a half bottle here means that Lucy was drinking during the day.

I think they were obviously there because the script needed them there for later when the bum came into the apartment.

Lucille Ball was an old school conservative and was probably very careful about what was portrayed on her show. But given this, even she was adamant about portraying her pregnancy and the subsequent birth of Little Ricky on the show as a normal and natural part of life and marriage. Bravo. Even in "Here's Lucy", she never had anything on her show that was blatantly racy, unlike other shows of that era. Also, it was the norm back then to always have married couples in separate twin beds, BUT in one episode...the one where Lucy and Ricky are handcuffed together....they are in one bed....necessary for the comic effect. IYKYK.

Well, they didn't really have a bar, so the bum had to grab the bottles from somewhere! Haha! Just like their dining table that was folded up behind the sofa! Verna Felton was also the voice of Mrs Slaghoople, Wilma's mother on The Flintstones the first couple of seasons! Lastly, could Bill Frawley's absence be due to the claus in his contract about being allowed time off to see the World Series, Rick?
