In order to allow work to proceed on the wheelsets of 73050's tender, it was lifted with the LMS 40 ton steam crane to allow them to be removed. The wheelsets need to have the roller bearings checked and probably have the tyres reprofiled. Work carried out at the Nene Valley Railway.

It's impressive to see these old machines still working and doing what they were intended for.. keep up the great work.

I always loved these big bastards. Seeing them at the Cascade Railway Museum, Washington. These fine British machines even made it as far as our American railways. Great video!

Wonderful video and good to see progress on 73050s overhaul. Had to laugh at the stuck axle box solution! "Let's hit it with a big hammer"

Thanks for this as my late father built a 75ton version of the Cowan Sheldon in 0 gauge . Fantastic to see the crane in action 👍

Something is stuck 😮 in steps gentleman with large hammer something is no longer stuck😅 The crane is one serious piece of engineering great to see something like that preserved and doing what it was built to do 👍

It seems to work in a similar way to a Lego mobile crane I built. The engine is in the rotating section and it sends the power down through the turn table to the under carriage

BR were still using steam cranes until quite recent times, just before privatisation I think, and decades after the last steam trains. I saw a steam crane working in New York on the rebuilding of a ferry terminal about 15 years ago..

I was a driver at Crewe from 1975 till 85 I think our Steam crane was replaced early 80s. It was always in Steam ready for call outs and had coal fires around it during the winter to stop it freezing.

pity the railways are moving away from rail mounted cranes to road cranes. What if something had to be lifted in the middle of a rail yard? Probably not likely. Some road cranes have rail wheels that could be lifted. I’ve seen photos of VR steam cranes No 18 amd 19 lifting entire diesel locomotives, a crane at each end. They were still used in the 1980s until one fell over on a minor job which was probably user error and suddenly the VR no longer used steam cranes.

Well I've learnt something, I did not realise that the steam crane could move under its own power, I always thought they had to be shunted.

Very, very powerful peices of kit the railway cranes . Cowan Sheldon, Ransomes and Rapier , craven brothers just 3 of many makers. immensely powerful and quite a lot are still operating on Indian and sub continental railway systems. An indictment to how well they were made.Great video production and for anybody interested in acquiring more knowledge about them the Peter Tatlow books on railway breakdown cranes volumes 1 and 2 and I think a 3rd volume will reveal all from steam power to diesel hydraulic types. Cheers.
